Yes in CopyQ for me when I retrieve an item in history it pastes it as
it would paste it if I did an immediate copy/paste. That is, the LyX
note (and everything else) would be preserved.

You do have to set this up though (i.e. explicitly tell CopyQ to store
the LyX representation of the clipboard). It is reasonable for clipboard
managers to default to only preserving certain formats. Otherwise a lot
of memory is needed.

If you specifically select an item in Clipman, then all you get is the
note contents (i.e. plain text). Otherwise, simple copy/paste without
accessing the clipboard's history results in the LyX Note being
pasted. Is this different from CopyQ?

I'm curious, when you retrieve an item in history, do they paste in
plain text? For example, make a LyX note, and copy some text and the LyX
note, then copy something else, then in Clipman/Parcellite retrieve the
previous item (the one with the LyX note) and paste. Does it paste the
LyX note?

So does Clipman or Parcellite. Not sure how they interact with Gnome
these days, though.

Note that the clipboard manager CopyQ works very well with LyX.

Re: Problems to select text in Lyx 2.1.4 / Ubuntu 16.04

2016-06-13 Thread Hermann Josef Eckl
Thank you Liviu for this further explanation. I understand that LyX has a
history of problems with clipoard managers. In the current case this seems
triggered by a buggy version of gpaste, which causes also other problems.
But fortunately, there is an easy solution, if gpaste is replaced by
another clipboard manager.

I will post this analysis also in the German ubuntuusers-forum, so maybe
together we can find the underlying causes of these problems.

Re: Problems to select text in Lyx 2.1.4 / Ubuntu 16.04

2016-06-12 Thread Hermann Josef Eckl
Thank you, Scott and all here.

I have tested now the situation on 4 computers and I can confirm, that the
gpaste-extension for the GNOME Shell interferes with LyX, so that problems
in selecting text occur.

As soon as I remove gpaste LyX works normally. The gpaste extension
consists of 4 packages: gpaste (this seems to be the gpaste-demon), gnome-
shell-extensions-gpaste (the visible shell extension), gir1.2-gpaste-4.0,
libgpaste4. I am not sure, whether it is the shell-extension, that causes
the problems or the underlying gpaste-demon.

It is still strange, that only LyX has those text-selection problems,
whereas all other programs work normally together with gpaste. Also LyX
worked fine prior to Ubuntu 16.04. In Debian 8.x gpaste has the version
3.14-2, in Ubuntu it has the version 3.18.3-1.

Anyway gpaste causes some other strange problems in Ubuntu 16.04. The
gpaste-demon seems to trigger an XORG-process which consumes extreme
amounts of CPU-power. So I would give the advice that gpaste should not be
used in Ubuntu 16.04; it can be replaced by Clipboard Indicator, which can
be installed online via the GNOME extensions website.

Thank you for all the help and best wishes,
yours, Hermann Josef

Good job figuring out the problem! First, it is not necessarily the case
that LyX is not to blame. LyX could be the problem, or gpaste could be
the problem, or other updates due to 16.04 could be the problem. It is
hard to say.

Hopefully you can make progress in identifying where the bug comes from
so that you can report it to the right place so that future users won't
have the same issue. I think that would take you a lot of time though.

Best,

Scott

Thank you, Liviu. It seems that Jean-Marc, below in this thread, has given
an important clue to the solution of this strange problem.

Currently I have installed Ubuntu 16.04 LTS - and am facing a very
strange an annoying problem: I have difficulties to select longer or
even shortes pieces of text with the keyboard or mouse.

If I am trying to select some text, the selection captures only short
passages and fails after some words or paragraphs, regardless of
whether I am selecting with the mouse or with keyboard shortcuts. ALl
other programmes (text editor, Libre Office etc.) are working
correctly and I can select text withput any problems.

I am facing this problem with at least 4 computers, all of them have
installed Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and LyX 2.1.4. I am running another
machine with Debian 8.x and have no problems at all. Of course I have
tried different keyboards and mice, I have also reinstalled Lyx and
TexLive and I have deleted my old Lyx configuration files.

Re: Problems to select text in Lyx 2.1.4 / Ubuntu 16.04

2016-06-09 Thread Hermann Josef Eckl
Thank you very much, Jean-Marc. It seems, that you gave me an important
hint for the solution of my problem.

I have installed the "gpaste"-extension for the GNOME Shell, which is
provided as a package of Ubuntu 16.04.

It seems that gpaste has some severe bugs. As soon as I remove it, the
text selection problems in LyX are totally gone. It is a little bit
strange, that this affects only LyX and no other programs. Therefore I
never thought, that gpaste could be the cause of this problem. In Debian 8
gpaste works fine with LyX and generally all programs.

I will now test the situation on all of my four computers, where I have
installed LyX / Ubuntu 16.04. If the removal of gpaste also clears the
problems in LyX everywhere, then I think we have found the solution.

Thank you so much, with best wishes,
Hermann Josef

I put a Qt5 build for 16.04 in the LyX Qt5 PPA:

Regarding the slowness issues, is there a qt5 version for you to try in
this PPA for your distribution?

Do you run any utilisty related to clipboard (clipboard manager of some

Are you seeing this in a large document? Can you come up with a
minimal reproducible .lyx file?
