If they are simple, I follow a simple routine:
a) I use KWord under Linux to open the doc-file
b) I export from Kword as .tex file
c) I check if the LaTeX file will run in TeX
d) I start LyX and import the LaTeX file
Now, pictures, tables etc

I would like to have a longtable with a caption in LyX.
The corresponding latex-Code is the following.
\begin{longtable}{|c|c|}
\caption{this is a test} \\ \hline
a & b \\ \hline
c & d \\ \hline
\end{longtable}
Caption in LyX must be defined in a Float Environnment. When I define a float

This sounds silly, but I've been through all the help files, and I can't see
a way to underline some text. Yes, I know it's a moderately tacky holdover
from typewriter days, but I need to underline a few words here and there in
a document to meet

Layout > Character > Misc > Underbar.
Better you use the package "soul":
add the line
\usepackage{soul}
to the preamble and then use the command \ul in ERT.

I have been using the letter and report classes but over time I

allowing for section, subsection, subsubsection and other
