My understanding is that fragmentation doesn’t matter on an SSD: no drive heads, no rotating platters, and therefore no performance degradation. Of course, if you still have an old-style hard drive used for purposes other than backup, there’s a possibility you might have an issue. From:

Hi, The internal drive on a Mac does not need defragmented at all. If it’s an SSD, then it should never be defragmented anyway. If it’s a spinning drive, then the MacOS handles disk maintenance on its own and does any cleanup, defragmentation such things overnight or first thing when the Mac
