iPod touch

2016-10-25 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

I was wondering whether those of you who use ipod touch would be happy to tell
me how satisfied you are with it. There's been a disturbing rumour on the list
a while ago, that ipod touch might be discontinued. Was it just a rumour?

Thanks in advance

Andrew

Re: iCloud Documents and Data that are hidden

2016-10-25 Thread Grant
Hey Tim,

Thanks so much for your reply! I’ve found that while I can create an alias to
the !/Library/Mobile Documents folder and view the top level of directories in
there, I can’t open any of those directories. I even tried creating aliases to
those subdirectories without success. And I can’t delete any of the top level
directories either—the Finder returns an unknown error, and when I use the rm
-R command in the Terminal I get no error message but the folder is not deleted.

Looks like you really can’t mess around with that data—but there are a ton of
app containers in there for apps I’ve maybe only used once or twice, years ago.
It would be great if there was a solution for this, but if not, I’ll move on
*smile*.

Cheers,

Grant

New IOS update?

2016-10-25 Thread Stacey Robinson
Is there a new update for Ios10?
My husband heard that they have put one out that requires some kind of six
digit code.
We are both using iPhone six’s.

Peace,

Re: No more hardware escape key on upcoming MacBooks

2016-10-25 Thread Brandt Steenkamp
Well, good luck to those who decided to go with the new MB pro.

I know many doubt, but look back to the iPhone 3gs, things worked out fine in
the end. Apple has a history of pushing shocking ideas to the for, and look
where we are today.

I might not be one of those buying the new Mac, but I would, if I had the need
and the money.

Warm regards,

No more hardware escape key on upcoming MacBooks

2016-10-25 Thread Mary Otten
I just saw an article talking about how you can re-map and existing key, such
as control, caps lock, command or option, to take the place of the escape key
which is going away on the new MacBooks to be revealed on Thursday. There will
still be that functionality on the new magic track bar or whatever they're
calling it. But if you are a person who wants to have a hardware escape key,
you will have to remap an existing key to get it. For those of you who use caps
lock for voiceover, good luck. I have no idea how that Mike coexist with this
new functionality. Or you're stuck with the new magic track bar and it's soft
functionality. Could be interesting.

VMFusion question, any way to create more than 10 network adapters per VM?

2016-10-25 Thread Scott Granados
Hi, have a question about virtual machines that maybe some of the more advanced
users have run in to.

I’m trying to run a bunch of virtual routers. Is it possible to increase the
number of virtual network adapters per instance? It seems to top out at 10.
Also, in VMfusion 8.1 professional I see the list of networks that each adapter
can join but the custom option no longer seems to work, it’s listed but I can’t
select it. Are the options now just bridged, auto detect and host?

Any pointers would be most appreciated.

Thank you

Scott

Its been stable for some time, my email client used to complain

I was a charter cable member for all of one month because the service was
substandard. I had the 125 meg down 25 up and the network seemed congested to
me. Maybe with the merger things will improve.

2016-10-25 Thread Scott Granados
You know things like that are hit and miss. You’re testing the whole network
between you and the speed test server rather than the speed of any specific
link so you might get some idea but it depends on network conditions and any
number of things.

If you used Comcast for example you might want to use their speed test which
may be a better indicator but it may give you a rough idea.

Thanks

Re: router setup

2016-10-25 Thread E.T.

Scott,
Is Speedtest.com a reliable way to measure performance? I am happy
with the Netgear router but am curious to know if this site would
provide meaningful data.

Re: Anything new, good or bad, related to voiceover in the new update for Sierra

2016-10-25 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi Sean,

I was going to ask that very question, why am I getting this feature you are
talking about which is happening on my 2014 MacMini. However on my late 2012
IMac, this feature is not happening. Both machines have System Valt enabled.
Just started this yesterday after updating.

Most routers are very doable from the web interfaces.

The ones I’d suggest are the Netgear Nighthawk 7800 series or the DLink
DIR-897/lr or Asus has an 88U model that is highly rated although I have not

Re: VMware with MacBook 2015

2016-10-25 Thread Scott Granados
Depending on what you’re running on the Mac side. Just understand the more
cores you assign to the VM the less power the Mac side will share in. In
effect you’re just prioritizing the scheduling of your VM higher than the
native Mac side. You can always reduce the core count if you run in to
difficulty so there’s no harm in trying. I would and see how things work.

Threading is just a fancy computer word for scheduling. Threads are
processes that run on physical hardware and you can assign threads or
schedules to applications to get work done.
Each physical core is a processing engine. Back in the ancient days
say the early 2000s and before:) a processor only had one processing
engine on the dye. A dye is the physical piece of silicon that the
processor is etched on. Etching is a chemical process where they cut the
components on to a piece of silicon similar to say glass etchings but in
extraordinarily fine detail. With better chemistry and processes it
became possible to put more than one physical processor on the same piece
of silicon or dye. They started with 2 cores, then 4 and I believe they
are up to 12 or more now on a single piece of silicon for high end
applications. The intel chips we use in our laptops support 2 or 4 cores
or 2 or 4 processors per single dye. This means in the place where you
used to be able to put one processor in a single socket you can put 4 or
 more now.
Each physical core has 2 threads also called Hyper Threading. This
means to your software, if you look at the number of processors installed
on a MacBook Pro 13 inch you’ll see 4 physical processors but in reality
you have a single chip or dye with 2 physical processors and each
processor is broken in to 2 pieces. So you can see how we get to a point
where there’s twice as many cores showing up in software as there actually
 are on the dye.
Now when you run VMWare or other virtualization software you have the
ability to assign cores to a virtual machine. Each core is one of these
hyper threaded segments so you get 2 cores per actual core or in your case
a maximum of 4. On the 15 inch models, they use 4 core processors so you
can have up to 8 cores on a VM.
How do the number of cores relate to getting work done? So core count
is more important than clock speed or anything else. For example, a 4
core I5 version of the processor will out perform a 2 core or dual core
version of the I7. The reason is you have two more actual engines doing
work so on an I5 even though each individual engine is less powerful the
aggregate of all 4 out performs 2 I7 cores. As you’d expect, 4 I7 cores
will out perform 4 I5 cores so you can start to see a relationship here.
On your virtual machines you assign cores based on how much work you

Ah, thank you, Scott, this is more than I could have wished.

Just finally to run it past you as you seem to be an expert here (:)), would it
be ok for me to assign four cores to my virtual machine? At present I have set
it to two cores but I'd be happier with more.

Hi Andrew, this is a 2 core model. The 13 inch models use 2 core processors

Re: VMware with MacBook 2015

2016-10-25 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Scott,

This is so generous of you: thank you for such a detailed explanation.

I've looked under "about this mac' menu item, and I can see that my macbook pro
May 2014 has 3GHz intel i7 processor but it doesn't tell me how many physical
cores it has; consequently, I don't know whether it has two or four physical
cores. Where can I find info on what kind of processor this is?

Many thanks again

The watch updates take a while to run. Mine took about a half hour to complete
maybe a bit less. Just budget that time to leave your phone and watch plugged
in to upgrade.

Good luck

Re: Even in iOS 10.1 the iBook VoiceOver Continuous Reading Bug Continues

2016-10-25 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Mark,
I can confirm your findings. In fact, this problem also occurs if Auto Lock is
set to a longer time. In my case, I tested your model at 30 seconds, and also
my usual setting of one minute. In both cases, iBooks will stop speaking after
a length of time, usually longer than the Auto Lock setting. It does take much
longer to produce the stoppage when Auto Lock is set to one minute, but it will
happen.

Later...

Hello Everyone,

A while ago I posted to the groups describing what I consider to be an iBook
VoiceOver continuous reading bug given that the behavior did not occur in
previous versions of iOS.

After posting, a couple of iOS beta testers reported that this issue had
been resolved in iOS 10.1.

Well, as you can guess, I updated to iOS 10.1 and the bug, in my opinion,
persists.

I am going to paste in a modified copy of my previous post on this and see
if any of you can reproduce it in iOS 10.1.

[ORIGINAL TEXT]
My preferred method for reading iOS iBook titles is to use the two-finger,
swipe-down VoiceOver gesture, in order to initiate continuous reading of the
text. Please note that I am not referring to the Speak Screen accessibility
feature.

In short, my display is set to automatically lock after 30 seconds. In the
previous versions of IOS, performing a 2-finger swipe down, in an iBook
title, would suspend the auto-lock and allow for continuous reading of the
text. This does not appear to be the case, any longer.

This is to say, in certain titles, such as those containing imbedded
hyperlinks, the auto-lock engages, cancelling the continuous reading mode.

I first discovered this, last night, while reading the Apple TV User Guide.
The same phenomenon occurred when I tested my hypothesis with the iPhone
User Guide for iOS 10 and iPhone User Guide for iOS 9.3.

At first, I thought it was some kind of issue with titles produced by Apple
but I tested a recently published (non Apple) title, that has a web link
imbedded in the text, and, just as with the Apple manuals, after less than 1
minute, the screen locked and reading ceased.

It should be noted, that the hyperlinks that exist in the Table of Contents,
used to jump to a specific area, does not cause interruption to the
continuous reading feature. I say this because titles in my Library,
containing only such links, read as expected.

Steps to Reproduce:

1.
>From Settings/General/Display and Brightness, set Auto Lock to 30 seconds.

2.
In iBook, open the Apple TV User Guide and, from the table of contents,
select Home Sharing; or, open the iPhone User Guide for iOS 10 and, from the
table of contents, select Basics.

3.
Once the desired page is displayed, perform the two-finger swipe-down
VoiceOver gesture to initiate continuous reading.

As I said, in my testing, each time either an imbedded hyperlink or heading
is encountered, a short time later, the screen will lock and reading will
stop.

Please confirm if this occurs during your testing.

I would like to note that, this problem does not occur when using the Speak
Screen accessibility feature. While certainly useful in some instances, the
Speak Screen feature is not my preferred method for reading iBook titles.

Mark

Re: Setting up iCloud settings issues after installing IOS 10.1

2016-10-25 Thread Scott Granados
With the approval you should get a popup on your Mac or iPad or other apple
device. You’ll set up on your phone and then see an approval request on your
other device, click approve and then you’ll receive a code of 6 digits in
length. Punch that code in to your phone and you should be good to go.

Thank you

Re: VMware with MacBook 2015

2016-10-25 Thread Scott Granados
Hi Andrew, I think this is on topic since we’re talking about the use of a set
of applications on the Mac, Mark or Kara can speak up if not but I think we’re
well with in safe territory for the subject and it’s a great question.

Threading is just a fancy computer word for scheduling. Threads are processes
that run on physical hardware and you can assign threads or schedules to
applications to get work done.
Each physical core is a processing engine. Back in the ancient days
say the early 2000s and before:) a processor only had one processing engine on
the dye. A dye is the physical piece of silicon that the processor is etched
on. Etching is a chemical process where they cut the components on to a piece
of silicon similar to say glass etchings but in extraordinarily fine detail.
With better chemistry and processes it became possible to put more than one
physical processor on the same piece of silicon or dye. They started with 2
cores, then 4 and I believe they are up to 12 or more now on a single piece of
silicon for high end applications. The intel chips we use in our laptops
support 2 or 4 cores or 2 or 4 processors per single dye. This means in the
place where you used to be able to put one processor in a single socket you can
put 4 or more now.
Each physical core has 2 threads also called Hyper Threading. This
means to your software, if you look at the number of processors installed on a
MacBook Pro 13 inch you’ll see 4 physical processors but in reality you have a
single chip or dye with 2 physical processors and each processor is broken in
to 2 pieces. So you can see how we get to a point where there’s twice as many
cores showing up in software as there actually are on the dye.
Now when you run VMWare or other virtualization software you have the
ability to assign cores to a virtual machine. Each core is one of these hyper
threaded segments so you get 2 cores per actual core or in your case a maximum
of 4. On the 15 inch models, they use 4 core processors so you can have up to
8 cores on a VM.
How do the number of cores relate to getting work done? So core count
is more important than clock speed or anything else. For example, a 4 core I5
version of the processor will out perform a 2 core or dual core version of the
I7. The reason is you have two more actual engines doing work so on an I5 even
though each individual engine is less powerful the aggregate of all 4 out
performs 2 I7 cores. As you’d expect, 4 I7 cores will out perform 4 I5 cores
so you can start to see a relationship here.
On your virtual machines you assign cores based on how much work you
want to do with each machine. In my case I run a lot of virtual routers which
for my purposes of learning and lab testing don’t need a huge amount of horse
power each so I will assign 1 per or at most 2. On the other hand, Windows
requires more effort to run so I might assign half my cores or 4 out of 8 to
the virtual machine leaving a good amount of power left over for my Mac and a
good amount for the VM. It’s not exactly a linear calculation but it’s good
enough for government work so you can split things up that way. The more cores
you assign to the VM the fewer are available for scheduling other Mac Jobs.
You can assign all 8 and the load will just be shared with the Mac, it doesn’t
render the mac side useless but your VM can really pull a lot of power from the
rest of the machine in that configuration.

Let me know if this has helped you or if I’ve only confused you worse. Feel
free to ask any followup questions to help fill in the gaps or anything I’ve
confused you on.

The built in apple activity monitor also gives information from last boot. If
you take a note of how much data downloaded since 9pm and look again at 12am
you can figure it out. There may be a better way though.

Take care

Regarding Siri activation shortcut keys, I changed it in system preference /

Re: Checking how much data has been downloaded.

2016-10-25 Thread Jonathan Cohn
There might be some items in activity monitor though I don't know if they get
populated even if activity monitor is closed and most likely the display is
graphical.

On the command line you could use
netstat -i
but that gives you numbers since booting. You could keep terminal up and then
run a version of net stat that updates every hour…
net stat -i 3600

The 3600 would be the number of seconds in an hour.

Good luck!

Re: Stress testing the MacBook Pro

I have not experienced this, but one would hope that the computer would do
this. Of course, first enabling energy saving functions like turning off
throttled cpu's …

Generally, my Macintosh's don't even start the fam unless I have VM's running.

Re: Saving a document under many folders, and input short cut

2016-10-25 Thread Jonathan Cohn
First can be one with sidebar. In the finder drag The folder of interest to
the sidebar, there is a keyboard shortcut for this but I don't remember it.
Then, when saving documents you should be able to expand out a mini find
your view to select things including the items on the sidebar.

We are second issue, you need to go into system settings keyboard shortcuts
and change the keyboard shortcut for spotlight to something else, then
command space should toggle between keyboard input modes. This might A bit
different in Sierra, since command space hell down on some cases bring up
Siri, with the above worked up to El Capitan.

Re: VMware with MacBook 2015

2016-10-25 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Yes, it is normal because if you choose a language that uses different script
to Latin, the shortcut keys that require Latin letters like for instance vo+m
will not work. I have the same issue in Greek because of its different
lettering that is different from Latin alphabet. So you need to choose
shortcut key combination that doesn't require letters but is based on function
keys and symbols provided they are the same in both languages you want to
switch between.

Re: Saving a document under many folders, and input short cut

2016-10-25 Thread Andrew Lamanche
I had some difficulty with it too initially.

Make sure you interact with the second column in the second table. The first
column just tells you whether the checkbox is checked or not. The second
column tells you what the shortcut currently is. You need to interact with the
cell first and move once to the right to land on the textedit field with the
shortcut currently in place. Voiceover should say "selected" and then you
press the new shortcut key combination. Move away and back to the same field
to confirm the new shortcut.

Let me know if you succeed.

Hi Mary, this is for all customers not just the beta as it was sent over the
air, not as part of the download package.

Daniel, as for whether it’s for the iPhone 6, I am not sure of that. Most
carriers unify their iPhone releases but with the fractured state of modems on
GSM networks now I am not sure. I am using an iPhone 7+ for reference.

Thank you

Re: VMware with MacBook 2015

2016-10-25 Thread Andrew Lamanche
can I just ask a quick somewhat off-topic question regarding the cores assigned
to the virtual machine? I have a macbook pro 13 inch 2014 with 16GB RAM and I7
processor. Does this mean I could assign easily 4 cores to Windows in VMWare
Fusion?

I've always had a bit of trouble understanding the subject of cores and virtual
cores and threading for that matter. :)

Many thanks

Re: Formatting a document in pages

2016-10-25 Thread Andrew Lamanche
In addition to what Anne said on formatting, your second issue of changing
input language from Arabic to English using the default shortcut
command+spacebar, you need to change this as it clashes with the spotlight
shortcut keys. Go to system preferences, choose "keyboard", choose
"shortcuts" tab, and in the first table choose "input sources" and in the
second table change the shortcut to something else. Make sure it doesn't clash
with any other shortcuts. I usually check this by invoking the "keyboard help"
with vo+k and then try my shortcut combination. You quit the "keyboard help" by
pressing escape.

Hope this will help.

Even in iOS 10.1 the iBook VoiceOver Continuous Reading Bug Continues

2016-10-25 Thread M. Taylor

Mark

Re: Anything new, good or bad, related to voiceover in the new update for Sierra

2016-10-25 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi Mary. I'm not experiencing any major Voiceover issues here. Although when my
screen goes to sleep Voiceover says Authentication, Login Panel, User,
Authentication has new window. This has never happened in previous versions of
Sierra but has started with this beta cycle. I can't figure out why it does
this. I don't have a password and I don't have it set to require a password
after wake. I don't have a screensaver either but it's as if it's treating
whatever this is as a screensaver. Maybe it has something to do with the Unlock
With Watch feature but I doubt it because my Mac is too old for that feature.
