Re: I Want to Buy a HomePod But, ...

2018-02-16 Thread Saqib Hussain
Hi. The HomePod doesn’t support multiple timers. You cannot pair it to your
phone either. You can do this with the Amazon Echo. This HomePod has been
rushed into the market and it’s cost Apple around £250 to assemble and they
can’t price it less than what it is right now. I’m happy with my Echos as they
do all the things that the HomePod can’t. I admit Sound is excelent on the
HomePod but that’s about it. Even Siri is dummer than the Siri you have on your
phone and neither can compete with Alexa or Google voice assistant offerings.

Thanks for the response. Just to clarify, I meant I want to be able to add
calendar events, or move them around. As to timers, I'd want named timers, and
to have multiple ones. For instance, I'd want HomePod to tell me the cookies
are done after 12 minutes, and that the laundry is done after 25.

Still, multiple accounts is the big one. I want HomePod to know who's speaking,
just as Siri already does on phones and iPads. It should then use that person's
account to respond to the request. Better still, use Apple Watch authentication
to make sure the person speaking is nearby, similar to automatic login on
macOS. After all, I could be on the wifi network, but nowhere near the speaker,
and HomePod will consider me present right now. That seems like a poor design
choice if one has roommates, ornery siblings, and so on.

I'm sure HomePod sounds incredible, but as someone who likes music but wants
the smarts and audio books more than tunes, I can't get behind it as it is
right now.

Re: I Want to Buy a HomePod But, ...

2018-02-15 Thread Scott Davert
I agree with Tim. My snarky comment aside, I'm afraid this just isn't
going to happen. In the view of many, the headphone jack is a step
backward, not forward. While there are things like Bluetooth
transmitters that you could pair that can be hooked in to something
with a 3.5 MM jack, it requires the purchase of more stuff. Though the
sound quality of the Homepod is great from what I can tell, the
absence of a headphone jack was one of the things that turned me off
to it. Further, as already mentioned, there is no direct support for
other music streaming services which are available through other
devices on the market such as the Echo, Sonos, and Google platforms.
yes, you can certainly Airplay your iPhone using spotify or whatever
other music you have on your iPhone, but you cannot, for example, ask
Siri to play something specific from Spotify and have it be
successful. If you are an Apple Music subscriber and want something
with fantastic sound and do not mind using Airplay, though, the
HomePod certainly seems to fit that bill well. I'm also sure it will
improve when updates are released to include stereo sound and
multi-room support. I also will not be getting one, as it doesn't fit
my use case.

Just my thoughts,
Scott

Re: I Want to Buy a HomePod But, ...

2018-02-15 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

As mentioned by others, there's no need to have Apple Music. You should be
able to play music from your iPod via AirPlay to the HomePod wirelessly, thus,
playing your music from the exact playlists and such that reside on the iPod
itself. Regarding the inclusion of a 3.5 mm jack, I would bet big money that
you'll never see such an animal on the HomePod, it just doesn't fit the use
model that Apple has for the HomePod.

Re: I Want to Buy a HomePod But, ...

2018-02-14 Thread David Chittenden
We decided to return our Home Pod for now. We are waiting for it to, hopefully,
interface with our Sonos home theatre setup. That said, Home Pod definitely
sets timers and alarms. It will say what the upcoming appointments on the
calendar are. Unfortunately, this is currently only for one user.

Apple Music is not necessary. One can either place music in one's iCloud
account, or purchase Apple Music Match and Home Pod will play said music. No
matter how loud the volume is set, the mic is excellent. I never needed to
raise my voice. And, the unit was able to understand me when I was in rooms
near the lounge where we had the speaker.

The rumour is that Home Pod should interface with Sonos systems when AirPlay II
comes out. As Apple will most likely not raise the price of Home Pod, we
decided to wait until it meets our use case before purchasing.

Kind regards,
