When I had the cast aluminum oil pan welded for the OM603 (after I punched a hole in it via a slipping jack), they bolted it to a large heavy sheet of steel to help reduce warping. I had to add a thick layer of gasket sealant at the right left corner to seal it, but otherwise they did a great job.
