Kevin,
The 300CD could be a very good deal. Most oil leaks are easy to fix.
Also, I need your head...cylinder head from the 220D, that is, for my 220D
project.
Thanks,
Bruce

why would someone *not* fix the AC?
Probably because Portland's climate is (I think) a lot like Seattle's,
which means you might only really want A/C for two or three weeks out of
the year. Not worth the cost, especially when it's just going to die

We're spoiled because the 1980s (not including the bulletproof 1985 models)
AT in 300 turbodiesels ONLY last about 140,000 miles. I'm on my third AT
(274K miles) in a 1983 300TD but it I am not complaining because the car is
such a joy to drive.

I don't know what's
these cars aren't -that- rare, but they're definitely fun to drive. Rarer
are the wagons, but if that isn't your bag then the coupes are nice. Oil
leaks could be 20 minutes or 5 hours to fix; it just depends on where.

Around here the're not. I have 6 300TDs and only 2 300CDs. I will be
parting a 123 300TD next
Around here in New England 300CD's do seem to be rare. Fellow lister
John Peterson and I found one-a good 15 foot car-but had window seal
issues, trany had shift and slip issues-some of the slip may hve been
due to dragging brakes. Could be had for about 1500. It is stored in a
heated garage.
I'd bet money that it's oil cooler line or oil filter canister gasket
related.

That's stinky. Something's wrong there. The coupes are nice
looking cars, and relatively rare in general. Looking at the
picture it seems to be similar
Run away, it's another looser.

Kevin,
depends; how much is he willing to pay you to take it? ;-)
about 8K turbo CDs were brought to the USA according to the figures
i've seen. whether or not that's rare in your book is relative.

Question: Is the auto tranny an issue in the Coupes specifically? (not sure
why it'd be peculiar to the Coupe, - just asking). Or is this common in a
lot of auto tranny 300Ds?
The 300 CD we looked at in AZ had shifting issues too. He said it was
slipping, but the dealer fixed it. Later, he

Same tranny.

Now that you put it that way, he would have to pay me around $3K to take it
off his hands! I do like the look of the 300CD's, but not the back seat
room. Now that I have a crew cab pickup which is big enough to hold
everyone and the doggies, it would be just a fun car anyway.

Don't know what the asking price is, but it better be under $1 K due to the
many issues that need attenditon.

Couldn't it also be the turbo drain tube seals? losing a qt every 40 miles
would indicate that it's high pressure oil loss or maybe even burning it
although oil CONSUMPTION wasn't mentioned.
Kevin in
with the Coupes since we checked that one

True, but how much oil will leak out of the turbo return line after the engine
is off. They said it leaks a lot when sitting

Yes.

They do not. They are by far the weakest link in the drivetrain.

When we rode in it, it shifted very hard, seemed it wanted to chirp the
tires. I did notice, though, that it was something like a pint - a
quart low
on ATF. But he said it had had shifting issues for some time.
It was probably flaring and they disconnected the vacuum line altogether

Good info. I'd wondered about the auto trannies in these autos. Didn't
know
if they were good or bad or somewhere inbetween.
They're good, certainly when compared to the ones in some mommyvans
I've heard of. It's just when compared to the engines, which are
_great_, they don't fare quite so
So its still for sale? Can I get some more info?
