separate the fender from the body. I can swing the whole thing out
quite a ways, but it just pivots from that seam and won't budge

This is a '78 model, with about 10mm thickness of goop up there at the
seam. The fender is going on my '84, so that's good news that the
later models aren't quite so nasty.
