[MBZ] OT: Happy 4th!
Hope all the Americans on the list have a pleasant holiday, and the rest of you lot have a quiet and pleasant 4th of July. A very sincere thank you to the veterans and active servicefolk who have helped us keep our independence for so long. In other news, the year is half over, and I've spent maybe 10 hours on the SDLs. I could work on them, but instead we are going to visit DC so I can be around the other people who do 20 hours of work in a year. :) Best, Tim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Sticker on Used MB
According to the following statistics, you stand roughly one chance in 340,000 of being injured or killed by an involuntarily exploding air bag in one of the car brands listed below. Since you also stand one chance in 4000 to 8000 of dying in a car accident in any one year depending on the circumstances, the exploding airbag odds look pretty good. Gerry When car sensors detect a crash, a chemical reaction is triggered by the ignition of a solid hunk of propellant. The way propellant works in an airbag comes down to heat, moisture, and timing. A wad of chemicals sits inside a flattened metal canister until heated up—which makes those chemicals expand quickly and gaseously when the airbag needs to inflate. Vents on the back of the bag prevent the whole thing from being blown to bits. All this happens in about half the time it takes for a person to blink: between 100 and 200 milliseconds. That’s how it’s supposed to work, anyway. But as many as one in seven cars on the roads in the United States may have defective airbags. That’s the scope of the ongoing automotive recall that includes 34 million cars—Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, General Motors, Subaru, Ford, Chrysler, and BMW are all affected. The defective Takata-made airbags explode with shrapnel, spraying motorists with sharp bits of metal, and have caused more than 100 injuries and at least eight deaths in the past decade. The faulty airbags are being traced back to the chemical compound Takata now uses for propellant. The manufacturer changed the main ingredient from tetrazole to ammonium nitrate in 2001. Takata has defended its continued use of the latter, calling it “safe and effective for use in airbag inflators when properly engineered and manufactured,” in a statement. But employee emails show that there were “dire warnings about safety and quality lapses years before Takata Corp. would fully acknowledge the threat posed by its defective airbags,” according to a report by the Senate Commerce Committee this week. Senator Bill Nelson, a Floridan Democrat, says it now appears that Takata was aware of “serious safety and quality control lapses” in its factories as early as 2001. Ammonium nitrate can expand rapidly as a gas without exploding, but it can also explode violently. It's pretty unstable, too, which means it can—and often does—blow up when it isn't supposed to. It’s cheap, which makes it desirable to manufacturers, but it’s unpredictable. “And it's not regulated at all as a propellant,” said Byron Bloch, a car-design consultant and long-time advocate for automotive-safety technologiessnip http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2015/06/airbags/396854/ More than you want to know about airbags: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airbag . [MBZ] Screw Emissions!
For the past two years Frosch has had issues with misfires. I took it to one shop because of a club event deal. Those bozos screwed the car up because they were not qualified to work on a Djet system. They claimed to have adjusted it the best they could and made it run. They did a crap job and misadjusted the systems to the point that the car ceased to be drivable by the end of last summer. The thing was just popping and puttering with no power at all. To get it to actually move, I had to work the go pedal like a treadle sewing machine. Top speed was all of 10mph. She was a dog and so got parked until this week. I got enough spare cash to take it to my indy. The past year I collected a spare computer, MAP, and rebuilt a set of trigger points, two spare dizzys and a bunch of untested injectors. I dropped the stuff off with the car Fridayay and waited for news. I got a message that injector #2 was bad but the used ones were not the preferred resolution. I got a new injector, but that did not make it better. Fresh plugs were also not a good fix. The rebuild of the trigger points was also less than ideal. I dropped by the shop yesterday to see how it was going. Indy had me take the car for a drive. The fresh injector and adjusting fuel to rich made it a little better, but did not solve the misfire. The sort of last option was to go with all new injectors. $2500 to get fuel moving right. I agreed to the solution if he thought it would do the trick. He was reticent but wanted to try one last thing. I got a call this afternoon that I needed to call the shop. It did not sound like good news. No information as to why. I was taking the w140 out for a wash, so dropped by to see what the issue was. I got out of the car and the look of grief on my indy's face was not inspiring. Neither was his attitude. I was ordered to get in the car and drive it. He tells me even with the new injectors it now runs worse than it had just 24 hours prior. I guess the look on my face showed exactly what I felt inside. Massive Whiskey tango, what do you mean I have stage three cancer, Doc? But, I got in and fired her up. Backing out of the lot, she gave a definite, but delicate poot poot, miss. Traffic was too thick to get her on the highway for a test, so I just took her around a few blocks to see how bad it was. I could not tell if the missing was really noticeable or more pronounced than it had been Wednesday. Power seemed better and the skipping was not at all what she had done before. Maybe the new injectors were delivering fuel far better than the one in the car and that was enough to have her running fine. Wednesday, it was as if one or more plugs were dead. I pull up to the shop and tell him that I think it is running much better than before. The Sh*t eating grin I get back confused me. Turns out I do not have all new injectors. I have a 42 year old car. The emissions system was screwing up things, on top of the 20* advance the other shop did, poor selection of plugs they added, garbage Bosch wires that did not really fit, so #7 was not firing, and the fixed trigger points were wonky. Indy pulled the vacuum stuff to the relays and dizzy then timed it properly to 5* retarded, cleaned the original trigger points (there was oil) and put them back in. Dried the dizzy cap and a twist and twiddle to make it all good and I have a car to drive in the heat this holiday weekend. She ain't perfect, but she runs well now and will be getting fresh wires and the oil pressure looked at on another visit. I was sworn to only take Frosch to his shop, as he did not want to fix other folks screw ups, and we are only going to use new parts that he will stand behind. [MBZ] Today's Tasks
Wanted to drain and refill the differential on the W220 (S430) so I figured I would do it after I got home, since the differential would be nice a toasty from the drive. On a whim I picked up a transmission (rear engine) mount while at the dealer today, since I keep reading about how these cars can be hard on mounts. My engine mounts look good and there’s no twisting or torquing of the engine from what I can see, so I don’t see a need to mess with the front ones for now. Got the differential done without incident. I wish there was a better way of filing it, as I rigged a piece of clear plastic tubing on the nozzle cap of a bottle a few years ago and keep that handy. I get the bottle inverted up in the wheel well or somewhere it can be at or above the differential and just squeeze the crap out of it to force the oil out. I know there are hand pumps you can do it with, but that seems really messy and a hassle. I would be interested to hear if anyone has a better method. Moved to the front of the car and got it in the air. Used the pneumatic suspension to raise it a few more inches, which is nice as I barely had enough room to get under the car on the ramps. Bottom mount bolt were easy, but the side bolts that go into the transmission case were a bit of a PITA. They’re angled down, so to be able to get a socket on them you have to loosen the bottom mount bolts and raise the transmission up with your jack. Once this is done you can get on them pretty easy. What I found weird was that the bolt heads for the two big bolts that go into the transmission case are 5/8”, not 17mm like on every other MB I’ve ever done this on. Strange. Anyway, got new mount in and everything started with a nice coat of thread locking compound on all the fasteners. After settling the mount, I had to use a 3/8” universal to get on the big side bolts, the bottom ones were easy. Close inspection showed that the old mount was beginning to shear off between the rubber and the center support part. Didn’t look like it was close to failure or anything, but it was coming apart. So, since I had planned on doing this tomorrow, I now have nothing to do tomorrow except to continue laying paint on the replacement bumper I got for the S420. Hopefully the weather will cooperate…. Those aren’t the ones that include shrapnel at no additional charge, are they? The wife’s former Mazda 6 had one of these and it got swapped out by the stealer a couple of months ago. The seat belt interlock was 1974 only. Bad idea, as everyone either hot-wired it and still didn't wear seat belts, or people who did often found it necessary to hot-wire the system so they could start their cars when it failed. The last coupla days I have popped several squirrels that were getting all the squirrel seed my wife puts out for the birds. I think I got 5 or 6, some of them ran off after getting hit but I think they probably did not live long. There are 2 or 3 more around that ran off before I could get them. They learn pretty quickly but I think this must have been a recent wave as they were not yet afraid of me or the pellet gun. If I got most of them there might be more moving in to fill the niche. I zeroed in the scope of the pellet gun and put some bike lube in the barrel, that thing cracks like a .22 now when I fire it, and I can put a group into a quarter-sized circle at 50ft or so. I got one squirrel that was way up in a tree maybe 30ft or so, knocked it out and it thunked but got up and ran off. Another one made it up about that high before succumbing and dropped down. I leave them out there, most of them disappear over night, I guess raccoons or possums or something gets them. --R On 7/2/15 1:48 PM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote: That reminds me, I need to glue some walnuts onto my chipmunk traps.
