[MBZ] Audi set to ofer EV car with 300+ mile range to challenge Tesla

2015-08-21 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Audi AG will unveil a new concept car, the e-tron quattro, a fully electric
sport utility vehicle, at the Frankfurt car show next month, the German
automaker said this week.

The model, sized in between the Audi Q5 and Q7 four-door SUVs, will be able
to travel 310 miles per charge, the company said, farther than Tesla Motors
Inc.'s standard-level Model S sedan, which has a 270-mile range.

The e-tron quattro, the company's first mainstream electric vehicle, will
go into production in 2018.

The company announced the car through what appeared to be a subtle jab at
earlier plug-in electric vehicles, derided at times for their sluggishness
and limited torque.

Electric driving at Audi is a pleasure, not a compromise, said Audi, a
subsidiary of Volkswagen AG, which recently surpassed Toyota Motor Corp. in
total global sales for the first half of the year. Moveable aerodynamic
elements at the front, on the sides and at the rear improve the air flow
around the car, the company said.

The e-tron will likely challenge Tesla's Model X -- a medium-sized SUV with
gull-wing doors -- market analysts said. First deliveries for the Model X
are slated for September (*ClimateWire*
http://www.eenews.net/climatewire/stories/1060023083/, Aug. 6).

The Audi electric will run on three electric motors and a lithium-ion
battery and sets a new record in the SUV segment with low drag. This
contributes considerably to the long range of more than 500 kilometers,
according to a company statement.

Another luxury automaker announced this week that it will enter the premium
plug-in space: Andy Palmer, chief executive of Aston Martin, told *Automotive
News* on Tuesday that his company will bring an 800-horsepower, completely
electric version of the Rapide, a sleek sedan, to market in 2017.

Aston Martin will sell an electric DBX crossover model, still a concept
car, by the end of the decade, Palmer said.

The most amazing car I ever owned was a 1950 DeSoto with the semi-automatic
transmission. It had a clutch but was impossible to stall when stopping
using brake only (break, if you prefer). I bought TWO cars in sequential
years in Boston and Minneapolis, for a grand total of $100 and sold them
for a grand total of $25 ($15, $10) one year later. The demise of this
marque should not be mourned.

As I just mentioned, the design was changed to no longer be
purely cylindrical. Nothing else changed. All are (were) handmade
in France, from the finest wood available. The base instrument was
invented in France, in 1630, which puts it over a century before
the introduction of the metric system; your guess is as good
as mine regarding the units of the dimensions!

I have heard one opinion that the _sound_ of the older ones is
better, but the _intonation_ of the newer ones is better.
Translation: easier to play in tune.

Honey, I bought you the best-sounding clarinet available!

The HF stuff is reasonable for the price, I have an air hose and various
fittings, they work. I have the $20 recip saw, that thing just won't

with some abusive use.

Take a look at banggood.com for some really cheap stuff, order it from
China and it shows up some time later in the mail or UPS or whatever.
I'm not sure how they can make any money with the free shipping on stuff
but it is all reasonable quality, probably the same stuff every other

I've never been to one of these things (well, maybe once), so it
should be interesting ...

I've ordered the fittings, air chuck, and tire pressure gauge from Amazon
(Milton Industries brand) because I want those to be first quality.

[MBZ] OT Lambo

2015-08-21 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
So the stupid paper guy does not deliver my papers this morning, I go to
the store down the road to get some. I see a new topless black Lambo
parked outside the store, very cool. Thing is about 2ft high.

I go in get the papers, as I am leaving and driving by, I see this guy
helping this older woman get into the pass side of the thing, she is
having considerable trouble dropping down into the seat, he is laughing
at her. Hard to tell how old the guy was, so not sure if it was his
mother or wife. If it was his wife I am sure he could afford another one.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Harbor Freight Tools Huge Parking Lot Sale

2015-08-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I love being 5 minutes from a Harbor Freight store. Whenever I need that weird
sized Torx bit or some other off the wall tool, I print out a 20% off coupon I
keep on my computer and pop over to pick up what I need.

Both my RA and polisher came from HF, and don't think I spent $50 for the pair.
I use them regularly and I see nothing that would indicate they won't be around
for a while. I'll also buy their cheap pads, too, as I can justify throwing
them away when I'm done with them.

I haven't bought any wrenches from them, but the ones I've seen there that are
chrome plated look pretty nice and fairly well made.

Right now I'm struggling with whether or not to have my 3 ton Craftsman floor
jack rebuilt or replace it with a HF model. The HF one would be smaller and
lighter, but I'm really attached to my Craftsman behemoth.

[MBZ] Some days - The saga of the Golf.

2015-08-21 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The new Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) for my Golf came today. As I'd guessed its
actually two parts and my old one had the top part broken off. Replacement is a
pain, its on the side of the transmission, under the firewall. Its got big
flats, I used a 7/8 wrench on it but theres very little space to swing the
wrench, grrr, its nice to have a working speedometer though.
Hopped in the car to get an inspection sticker and before I hit the end of the
street the check engine light (CEL) came on. Grrr! Gotta get the VCDS (I dunno
what it stands for but its the magic that connects my laptop to the car) and
check it out but its in the Jetta that Angie has taken to work.
About 1/3 of the way to Angie's office I realized I'd forgotten to plug the
Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor back in when I put the air box back after replacing
the VSS. Pulled over, plugged it back in and suddenly the power that was
missing in 2nd gear is back. Still need VCDS to shut off the CEL. Actually I
probably didn't, after picking up the VCDS I stopped for new windshield wipers,
my local Car Quest gave me $10 off which is great since the Bosch wipers were
normally $45. When I fired up the car again the CEL was gone.
So I headed down to get the inspection sticker only to find the reverse lights
don't work. A cursory search suggests its the switch which sadly lives UNDER
the battery. So pull the airbox again (I'm getting good at it) then pull the
battery. The bottom of the battery box is held with 4 bolts into captive nuts
except one of the nuts isn't captive anymore. I ended up breaking out the
bottom of the plastic box, theres still 3 bolts...
The switch is indeed dead but there are none at any FLAPS or VW dealer for 50
miles. I ordered a replacement from ID Parts (where the VSS came from) and
since I ordered before 4:30 it MIGHT be here tomorrow. The real advantage in
ordering from an in-state source. Now the rain won't quit long enough for me to
button things back up. I'm off to California (with an aching in my heard)
Sunday so if the new switch doesn't arrive tomorrow it won't get fixed for a
week...

As I just mentioned, the design was changed to no longer be
purely cylindrical. Nothing else changed. All are (were) handmade
in France, from the finest wood available. The base instrument was
invented in France, in 1630, which puts it over a century before
the introduction of the metric system; your guess is as good

I have heard one opinion that the _sound_ of the older ones is

Translation: easier to play in tune.

Honey, I bought you the best-sounding clarinet available!

Acker Bilk had the best sounding clarinet ever (Stranger on the Shore).

Correct. And why, I don't know, but there are tons of 75s around here. They
used to be cheap as wine, but now people seem to think they're valuable.

Interesting story on All Things Considered yesterday about how convertibles are
going away, and how most manufacturers are getting out of making them. Most of
it has to do with efforts to meet the CAFE standards in a few years.

I've been out of the loop here recentlySince my stroke my left
side is numb to hot or cold feelings .I've had a habit of picking up the
frying pan with my left hand since I don't feel anything. [DUH !! ] Voila
!!...The answer is egg whites which you coat the burn area. You can even
immerse your fingers in a small bowl with 2 egg whites for about 20
+ minutes so

as to coat the burn spot. The collagen forms a coat heals it just like
you never burned yourself. I've done it twice [Another DUH ] I read it on
the 'net applied it..It's unbelievable.
