I'll be following this thread with great interest. Would like to have a good price per sq. ft number to work with. Presently have a new 14,000 sq ft shop ordered and delivered.. construction of site leveling and footings underway. Erection in next 90 days or less. I would like to seal the floor with a material that works well and has a long lifetime. [I'm single.. I can have as big a man cave as I want.. ;)) ] Grant... Call the industrial floor guys if you can afford it. The industrial epoxy can stand up better than concrete. It ain't cheap. Probably 10K to 20k$ for that, and maybe more. I got a quote a couple years ago, but I don't remember the per sq ft price. But you could coat the actual work area/office and not coat the "storage areas" for now. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] How new cars can kill you Drive a 240D or 300SDL
I was looking at cables intended to control a power take off so they are solid enough to push or pull without much lneed for everage. I was also looking under the hood and thinking a bell crank of some sort should make it fairly easy to convert a horizontal pull to a vertical pull. Might not even need that if the cable is flexible enough to route from the horizontal to the vertical and exert a down pull on the stop lever when pulled from inside the cabin. As you said, I want to keep it simple and not create a Rube Goldberg setup. (although the punk stuff is interesting). Could install a push button start switch too and toss the keys. On the 190Dc, I used the hood release cable form a 56 Karmann Ghia to shut off the IP (pulling down the lever the IP) THose had a clamp on the IP for the Push/pull start/stop cable. I used that clamp to hold the cable sheath. Your car is different. It does not use the start/stop knob to turn off the engine. I think you;d be better off to buy the right shutoff and use it that way. If you want to dis-associate it from the key switch, use a air toggle switch to block or open the vacuum line between the ign switch assembly and the IP. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Prepping for the Q.
My only currently "running" Benz is the pagoda so that's what I plan on taking to the Q on Saturday. When I parked it last October, I knew in advance that it would need a tune up- distributor cap, rotor, points, condenser so I purchased the parts last fall to have ready to install when I got it going again. I also knew in advance that the car would need a new exhaust. So yesterday, I start it up after almost one full year in hibernation and I notice a massive fuel leak. Turns out the braided rubber hose with a fitting on one end which feeds fuel from the electric fuel pump to the engine has rotted. It's only 8 yrs old! I order the part from classic center and turn my attention to the exhaust. I currently don't have the $1000 in my budget for a new stainless exhaust so I decide to repair the old one. Both pipes are rotted through where they attach to the back of the muffler so I figure I'd unclamp the muffler, cut out the rotted sections of pipe, weld it back together and re-install. I crawl under the car and come to the grim realization that the entire exhaust is welded together in one piece! So I unbolt the headers from the manifold- not fun. While I'm there I notice that a clamp on a coolant hose has rusted all the way through! Wow, the hose was attached by friction and goo alone! I could have blown the engine on the way to the Q! Anyway, while trying to negotiate the exhaust out from under the car I realize that it will not come out in one piece so, I cut one of the headers off and slide it out. The plan is to reattach with some sort of clamp system. As of now I cut out the rotted pipes and welded back to muffler. Hope no more snags! [MBZ] Max's bandaids Was: Prepping for the Q.
This is when a lift would be nice to have. My '95 sedan front exhaust pipe also cannot be removed from under the car without a lift. The White Whale ('87 wagon) seems to have developed an exhaust leak in the last couple weeks, I need to make some time to diagnose that and either replace the rusty components or patch. Lowes has a muffler patching tape with an advertisement I could not resist, I may try that. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '87 300TD '95 E300 Being a Diesel, you can bandaid and scab away with abandon, no carbon monoxide concerns. My rusty 240D has lotsa banaids and hose clamps. So many that I had to use coathangers to hold it up in the middle. It would sag between the bandaids and hang down and scrape the pavement. I need a new front section some year if the car lasts that long. On my 110s, the vibration would crack the pipe in front of the muffler, sometimes ruining the muffler. At the time, welch's grape juice came in a 6 oz. smooth side steel can. Those made perfect bandaids for the small OM621 exhaust pipe. I got to where I'd never try to have the pipes put together as designed. I'd use the can and 2 hose clamps to make a "flexible coupling" and never again had a muffler ruined. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] Las Vegas Airliner Fire
Boeing was warned the engine on the BA plane that caught fire on a Las Vegas runway was 'unsafe' four years ago Warning advises it must be inspected every 48,000 hours or 6,000 flights - which BA says it complied with The Federal Aviation Authority found that the General Electric engine, a GE90-85B, had an ‘unsafe condition’ following an investigation. They discovered the compressor could disintegrate and lead to an explosion that would propel debris at such a high velocity it would endanger the plane, The Daily Beast reported. The plane’s engine exploded in precisely the way FAA had warned could happen and caused ‘uncontained engine failure and damage to the airplane’. Denial: When the warning was issued, both Boeing and General Electric objected to the ‘unsafe condition’ warning and tried to have it removed, but in the final ruling in June 2011, the FAA retained the wording Solution: In the Airworthiness Directive, the FAA ruled that airlines must inspect the engine every 48,000 flight hours or 6,000 flights. As long as this was done, the FAA said there would be no risk General Electric stressed that the version on the BA plane was a different version to that mentioned in the FAA warning. The firm said in a statement: ‘The GE90-85B had two different configurations to the compressor spool. The original compressor spool was involved in the BA event and the later compressor spool configuration is referenced in the FAA AD cited in the story. ‘The AD does not relate at all to the compressor used in question in the BA event. The FAA AD refers to inspecting a weld that doesn’t exist in the original spool configuration. ‘The AD was essentially a modification to the operating manual. It’s simply an issue of two configurations.' http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3234999/Boeing-warned-engine-BA-plane-caught-fire-Las-Vegas-runway-unsafe-four-years-ago.html Gerry wrote: I wonder if the version with the weld is still flying?
Most folks would have no idea how to start the car if I handed them the keys so not much worry about it being stolen unless they haul it away on a hook. If one installed some sort of stop for the fuel shutoff cable, then it would prevent fuel flow unless one released the stop too. All sorts of odd things one could do. Maybe I should just get the right part and fix it. RB On 15/09/2015 5:02 PM, WILTON via Mercedes wrote: Need a pulley or two or a guide tube/conduit for the pull cable? KIS. Re: [MBZ] 1987 300SDL Swap
Early one evening in 1976, I had just departed main gate of George AFB, CA, with my '74 Plymouth van heavily loaded with beams (sticking out the rear, etc.) I had salvaged from a small bridge on base to take them to "cabin" in mtns 35 miles away. Almost immediately, CHP stopped me and asked for "license and registration." Officer glanced at 'em, returned 'em and waved me on. Next day, as I was returning the registration card to the glove compartment from on the engine cover, where I had placed it when the officer returned, I realized I had given him a 2-year-old card for the '64 Dodge van with MI plates I had sold coupla years before. Officer obviously did look very closely at card nor vehicle. The garage at my younger son's house has windows over the workbench at the one end and brackets that hold 2 X 8's or 10's (cannot recall exactly) over the windows on the inside so that you cannot look in and would have to go through them as well as the glass in order to get in. I would think that in a remote location anyone who truly wanted in would either break down the door or use a chainsaw to cut a new doorway into the wall. Dan, My family business dealt with waterproofing historical govn'mt buildings [Independence Hall] & concrete parking garages in the cities. Stuff we used was "Hydrozo". It's a special gummy like substance [mined out of Nebraska] which when suspended in a mineral spirits makes a GREAT waterproofing coating sprayed on covering. It's clear but in the last decade with EPA stepping in they now have to make it water-base. Not like the original but it's OK.. Let me talk to my brother as to which of the newer products that they now have would work for you. These newer products by Hydrozo might slightly darken the applied area. Thompson's Waterseal is only good for 6 months. The ultraviolet light is what breaks down Thompson's. Hydrozo's gum was not affected the UVA, so that's why we used to give 20 year/2 coat application guarantee. The new generation Hydrozo is water base so not as long guarantees. They also have alcohol based coatings. Google it How many square feet you doing ?? I would guess that your floor has a smooth finish on it though where a driveway will be a rougher finish. When I worked at the airport during college, one of the newer hangars had a very smooth floor that had (probably) an epoxy finish on it too. We had to mop and buff that thing once a week (my boss believed in a VERY clean hangar) and when it was wet like that it was extremely slippery too. Even if we brought in wet airplanes, or washed one in the hangar, we had to get out the sqeegees and mops and dry everywhere. I remember slipping and sliding on wet patches in there if it had not be dried off. Was somewhat problematic moving wet airplanes with the tug too as it would sometimes spin tires on the wet and that made for some tricky maneuvering. Easy to clean oil drips though, they just wiped right up. I worked in another old hangar that had probably been built in the 30s, that thing had a very rough concrete floor, actually made it much harder to move planes around though one's shoes and the tugs got some good traction. It had a considerable patina, I'm sure from generations of big radials dripping oil all over. --R On 9/15/15 12:38 PM, OK Don via Mercedes wrote: The concrete floor of my hangar is painted with something (I don't know what, but B-12 Chemtool dissolves it), but it is SLIPPERY when WET ! [MBZ] Dual fuel engines Wuz: CL brainchild award
The Farmall MD tractor and the IH dozers made during and after WWII used a Diesel engine that had a carb and started on Gasoline. It was switched over to Diesel to run. US military had multifuel trucks, but I don't now how those ran. Why wouldn't a carburated diesel work? Injector pump goes kaput so you mount a carburetor on the intake and you're back on the road. MPG would probably be less, but it could get you back to your home base. Didn't the army have multi-fuel trucks in the '60s with both injector pumps and carburetors? Re: [MBZ] CL brainchild award
Why wouldn't a carburated diesel work? Because you have to control WHEN ignition occurs. Either inject fuel with a 100% certainty at the time of injection, or leave it laying around under conditions where it will NOT ignite, and use a spark plug to trigger it. Carbureting fuel into a 20:1+ compression ratio engine is a recipe for disaster. The dual-fuel engines used spark plugs, as I recall. They'd be in the 10:1 ratio or less. Or you can use a screw plug to change the compression ratio, AND use both injectors and spark plugs depending on the fuel you were feeding it. Isn't it well known that you can run a lawnmower on diesel, if it's already hot? Very smokey, and low-power I'm told. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I was thinking about sealing it with something, basically to keep nasty stuff out like grease and oil. No risk of freezing down here, so that?s not an issue. Research I have done indicates that Thompson?s has changed the composition of their ?water seal? product, rendering it less than useful based on complaints I?m seeing on the Web.
