If it's the turbo seal, will that burn in the exhaust or leak out?

That's what has me confused the most. The car starts in the cold (down to
10-15 degrees) as easily as could be expected when using Delo 400 and there are
no major drops or smells of oil coming from the engine bay.

At 200 miles/qt being burned the exhaust of a 190D make BIG white clouds
of smoke - especially at idle (hot or cold)!

An engine that uses less than a qt in 3000 miles makes gray smoke when
idling cold and slight gray when floored with rpm over 4000 rpm.

I d sure try a compression test before I started serious surgery (one of
the FEW times one might be useful).

Re: [MBZ] OM617 valve stem seals

2006-02-28 Thread Peter Frederick
Worn out guides usually results in worn out valves and starting
problems cold -- turbo seals are a good place to look.

I do have an on topic turbo story, although not a Benz. I also have a
Volvo TD sedan -- nice car, 2.4L turbo diesel turning out 115 hp or so,
but a little smoky and sluggish when I got it. The turbo was very
quiet (normal for a Benz, NOT for the Volvo!) and finally died on a
road trip -- talk about slow acceleration! No smoke even floored,
though...

When I checked the turbo, it was seriously sticky in rotation and
showed signs of blowing oil out the front. Slapped a rebuild on and
took off on another trip -- much better performance and better oil
consumption once I got the oil line on top sealed properly.

However, on the trip back home, coming out of Louisville, KY there is a
long, fairly steep grade (couple miles at 4% or so) and the new turbo
was working hard. On the crest, it started blowing burning chunks out
the exhaust -- this continued all the way home. Seems there was quite
a bit of coked oil in the exhaust form the old turbo leaking oil, and
it would catch fire after hard running and the blast of clean air
following a crest in a hill.

Burned the exhaust out, had to replace it (at 210,000 miles).

The new turbo sounds like a police siren a couple blocks backand
that is NORMAL for the Volvo!

Get yourself a 3/16 thick scrap of some exotic hardwood,
drill a hole in it, file and sand it to a roughly rectangular

a dremel saw blade), fill the slot with epoxy, stick the

Why do colorectal surgeons have so much business? B/c people don't get
 colonoscopies from their gastroenterologists.

In other words, here's a short PSA - if you're over 50, get a yearly
 full

lung), and I've seen enough patients with it to know that it's an awful

Melissa. Haven't heard from her in 6-8 months.
Get yourself a 3/16 thick scrap of some exotic hardwood,
drill a hole in it, file and sand it to a roughly rectangular
shape like the original, cut a slot in one side (maybe with
a dremel saw blade), fill the slot with epoxy, stick the
key in it, and wipe up the excess epoxy. Can do it in an
evening while you watch TV. (except for the drilling and
slotting part, but that should take five minutes with
power tools)

Re: [MBZ] OM617 valve stem seals

2006-02-28 Thread Peter Frederick
Smoke on acceleration is often a bad turbo -- I know someone who got a
W140 for next to nothing (less than $8000 a year or so ago) because it
blew so much blue smoke -- not bent rods in that case, but a blow turbo
dumping oil in the exhaust.

Valve guide seals won't fix leaking guides, anyway, at least not for
long -- they wear out very fast from the loose valve. The oil
consumption comes from exhaust blowby atomizing the oil on the exhaust
valve, not from oil getting sucked in, although quite a bit does leak
down into the combustion chambers on shutdown (blue smoke on start --
actually diagnostic for worn valve guides if always accompanied by some
blue smoke after extended idle at stop light).

I would check the turbo for easy free spin (cold, engine off, of
course) -- any roughness in rotation or axial play, it's toast -- and
valve guides for excessive clearance. The latter is a PITA -- you have
to locate a piston near top dead center (so the valve won't drop into
the engine), then remove the rocker and valve nuts. Lower the valve a
bit to get it off the seat (which is why the piston can't be at TDC --
only 0.050 clearance) and wobble it side to side. If it moves, the
guides are shot. I'd check #1 cause it's easiest, if it's worn the
rest are, and it's time for a valve job.

If you are approaching 250,000 miles, it's time anyway.

Another raised hand - I also use Larry's service. I've started having
the oil analyzed in all our cars - and extending the drain interval.
The last test on the 300SDL with a little over 10K on the oil returned
a soot level of 0.6%. At that rate it seems like the oil could stay in
there forever, but I'll test again at 15k. The other cars have only
been tested once, so I'm still gathering data.

The Dakota doesn't get driven enough so it has significant fuel

It's very easy to remove the lock mechanism IF you can turn the key --
just press the little button on the back and it comes out after you
unbolt everything. You can then examine it and decided what to do --
it may only need cleaning, may be shot. Don't wait -- again, you have
to destroy the locking mechanism to get it out if the key won't turn.

Re: [MBZ] Sticky ignition lock

2006-02-28 Thread Peter Frederick
Get a new key from the dealer (or several if necessary) and toss any
brass duplicates -- they fill the lock up with shavings, believe it or
not.

If that doesn't cure it (and it probably will only help), buy a new
tumbler BEFORE it gets totally stuck -- they aren't expensive ($60 or
so) and it's any easy job UNLESS the key is totally immobile -- insert
key, turn to position 1, pull rosette up, turn key to position 0,
remove key and rosette, then insert key, turn to position 1 and insert
the removal tool -- depending on age, this is either a stiff wire or
a wire bent into a U with a 45 degree bevel on each end -- and
unlatch the tumbler. It will then come out with the key.

If you wait, it's about 4 hours of work, requires $150 or more in parts
(depending on what breaks) in addition to the tumbler, and you have to
grind the harded latch pin off with a Dremel tool, lying on you back on
the floor with the underdash panels out.

Luther,

Another possibility, easily checked, would be a cracked diaphragm on the
vacuum pump. the vacuum pump would then be pulling oil from the chain area and
blowing it, unseen, into the intake. Just take the line that goes from the
vacuum pump to the intake manifold and put it in a can or bottle for a couple
days. There should be zero oil in there.

Contrary to some opinions, the turbo engines do present a vacuum to the
valve guides quite often. Whenever you are idling or coasting down there will
be
negative pressure there however slight. If a seal has popped off the guide
it will definitely leak oil.

Air pressure is not needed to change the seals on our diesels. With the
appropriate piston at top dead center, the valves can only drop about 1mm or
so.
The threaded valve stems make it easy to remove the spring for servicing
the seals I have replaced valve springs and seals on a 240D in a couple hours.

Brian:

It's very easy to remove the lock mechanism IF you can turn the key --
just press the little button on the back and it comes out after you
unbolt everything. You can then examine it and decided what to do --
it may only need cleaning, may be shot. Don't wait -- again, you have
to destroy the locking mechanism to get it out if the key won't turn.

A train system is best, but another option is busways -- dedicated
lanes or roads used exclusively by express buses. Cheaper to install
than rail, although not as efficient if there's a lot of riders. If the
planning is done properly, the same right-of-way can later be changed
over to rail.

Tracks cost money to maintain, which is why a lot of them have been
abandoned and ripped out. Railroads, unlike nearly every other method
of transport, are expected to maintain their own infrastructure without
much government help. They have no incentive to continue to maintain a
line that's no longer profitable.

It would not serve Lynn to bike, since she lives 30 miles from the big
city. She is lucky to get to the county seat, where she can maybe get
the train, that may not run, because the rain has weakened slopes along
the track, shutting down service.

There are a few rail lines that are dormant, and in the meanwhile a
group of folks have gone about building homes along the waterfront
between the rails and lake. Now they want the railbed abandoned. They
would not like a bike trail, but rather that than trains.

We do not have a large network of bike trails, just a few major sites
that allow you to travel one route. Great for getting some people from
point A to B, but the rest of the folks are stuck finding an arterial
for the car, since there are too many hills otherwise for bikes. If we
bothered to build bike trails and light rail there may be an answer to
Seattle traffic.

Hey Hendrik,
I'd ride public transportation to the city to work IF it was
efficient, and
better than driving a personal car. Meaning, here, public
transportation
means that you get on a bus near your home, then ride that bus, and
likely
transferring to another bus in order to get to your place of
employment for
the day. The bus travels part of it's trip on suburban roads, and
part of
it's trip on the freeway. Unfortunately, during rush hour, the bus
gets
stuck in traffic just like a car, and then there is no benefit to
taking a

bus. Also the bus stops every few blocks, and so there's more time
wastage,
not to mention the time you spend standing around waiting for the bus
to

come.

What the brainwaves in Washington state fail to understand is that
people
will not take the bus to work as long as it gets stuck in traffic.
Only
some type of train system would avoid getting stuck in traffic, and
this
state has been happily ripping out an extensive RR track system for
the

last
40 years, turning them into cutesy bike trails for recreation. We
used to
have an extensive train and trolley system in Seattle. On the old
downtown

streets, you can see where the train tracks used to be All over!

Well, HELLO! We needed those for transportation! Look at the
Sounder
train, it's popularity has beensteadily growing, more trains added,
people

love it! It's just a crying shame that so much rail has been ripped
out.

Anyway, it's not an elitist thing, it's an efficiency thing. It's
why I

HATE riding buses.

Bedroom Communities are located in city suburbs where people live,

There are no SUV's here at this house, but you would be happy to know that I

It is _usually_ the tumbler, but it can be the column lock.
I know of no way to really diagnose it except to remove the

A physician couple actually did that at the hospital/school my wife went to.
They bought a station wagon and traded it when all the ash trays were full.
They went to the trouble to swap out the rear ash trays with the front ones
so all the things were full. Both of them smoked, and IIRC it took a few

You do have to factor in that I'm almost as adicted to measuring

Can I check the turbo for free spin by just removing the intake tube?
Should I check compression some evening soon?

~Smoke on acceleration is often a bad turbo -- I know someone who got a
~W140 for next to nothing (less than $8000 a year or so ago) because it
~blew so much blue smoke -- not bent rods in that case, but a blow turbo
~dumping oil in the exhaust.
~
~Valve guide seals won't fix leaking guides, anyway, at least not for
~long -- they wear out very fast from the loose valve. The oil
~consumption comes from exhaust blowby atomizing the oil on the exhaust
~valve, not from oil getting sucked in, although quite a bit does leak
~down into the combustion chambers on shutdown (blue smoke on start --
~actually diagnostic for worn valve guides if always accompanied by some
~blue smoke after extended idle at stop light).
~
~I would check the turbo for easy free spin (cold, engine off, of
~course) -- any roughness in rotation or axial play, it's toast -- and
~valve guides for excessive clearance. The latter is a PITA -- you have
~to locate a piston near top dead center (so the valve won't drop into
~the engine), then remove the rocker and valve nuts. Lower the valve a
~bit to get it off the seat (which is why the piston can't be at TDC --
~only 0.050 clearance) and wobble it side to side. If it moves, the
~guides are shot. I'd check #1 cause it's easiest, if it's worn the
~rest are, and it's time for a valve job.
~
~If you are approaching 250,000 miles, it's time anyway.

Peter, that was with a NEW tumbler. It would stick in the locked position.
Lubing the lock shaft with ATF was the only thing that fixed it.

~Brian:
~
~It's very easy to remove the lock mechanism IF you can turn the key --
~just press the little button on the back and it comes out after you
~unbolt everything. You can then examine it and decided what to do --
~it may only need cleaning, may be shot. Don't wait -- again, you have
~to destroy the locking mechanism to get it out if the key won't turn.
~
~Luther:
~
~The tumbler is MUCH cheaper than the parts you ruin getting a stuck one
~out. Buy a new tumbler (yours will come with a new key as well) and
~avoid being stuck in a dark parking lot in a bad part of town late at
~night!

I agree with Lynn. It is a matter of convenience and efficiency. I have
lived in only one city, Charlotte, NC, where it made any kind of sense
for me to use public transportation. I live in Houston, TX, and I can
drive the 14 miles to work in less time and at less expense than I can
take a bus. I would have to walk (or drive) 2 miles to the closest bus
stop or park ride, catch one bus for 5 miles, go to a transfer point
and catch another bus for the remainder of the trip. I think it is the
same situation for many folk here.

BTW, Houston has also built (at great expense) a light rail--from the
ball park to downtown. The only thing it accomplished was to have about
60 accidents within the first year of operation.

Re: [MBZ] OT Bedroom Communities

2006-02-28 Thread Jim Cathey

I agree with Lynn. It is a matter of convenience and efficiency. I have
lived in only one city, Charlotte, NC, where it made any kind of sense
for me to use public transportation.

I don't know how practical it is, but Portland's (OR) light rail
line parallels a pretty evil freeway, and from what I remember
from living in the area (before it was built) if it works _at_all_
it might be pretty nice to use. In fact I should have used it once
myself when I flew in when my mom was sick. I took a cab to the
hospital which tapped me out, and I later found out that the rail
starts at the airport and runs right by the hospital. Somehow I
doubt that a single ride would have been $40+.

The passenger side wiper does not move on the 75 240D. The shaft
does not turn. I think the wipers were turned on when they were frozen
to the windshield. Would someone be so kind as to post the short

Absolutely. All the ADA does is cut fueling at altitude to prevent
grotesque smoking. Cuts power, obviously. A turbo is what actually
makes up for the thin air so that you don't notice any difference,
and the ALDA is what adjusts fueling (at all times) to maximize
available power without smoking.

Drive normally.

it's working.

But what is the Switch that you refer to? I assume it is the assy.
that the tumbler seats into (and what the screwdirver, or other, would
insert into to turn it to start)?

The tumbler connects to the front of the column lock mechanism,
the switch to the back. (The switch is what contains the dingus
that prevents multiple start attempts without going back to 0,
so if it's got the moxie it could certainly try to give you
trouble.)

Rmove the lock before it sticks..
Take it apart and remove the brass slides tumblers..
Leave the key retainer on..
Reassemble and reinstall..
Now only you know that any MB key will work..

That would work, but it is a real PITA to get out the
little pin that holds the tumbler together. I have
done it, when I re-keyed a tumbler for the Chicken
Wagon. (Its had been Dremeled to death due to a
lockup incident, but the wafers were still good and
I had another lock in a parts car [Smelly].) The
ruined pin was replaced with a brad.

I remember now that the column lock I CLA'd was the one
in the Ebola Fishtank. When its tumbler locked up I was
still able to hotwire the car and drive it home, courtesy
of the fact that the column lock mechanism had frozen up
too. Scary, knowing that at any time it could let loose
and lock the column on me as I drove, so I went slowly
and tried to avoid bumps!

I eventually got the key to work once more so I removed
the tumbler. It was filthy, and I cleaned it out and
lubed it and it started working well again. I bought a
new tumbler anyway, but I think it's still in a bag in
the ashtray. (Stupid carburetors. Stupid owner [me].)

I did remove the column lock and got it all slicked up
again. There's not that much to it, but it can get all
full of crud over time.

does not blow the air back to the manifold.

nearly exactly at the middle of the add/max.

Whenever you are idling or coasting down there will be
negative pressure there however slight. If a seal has popped off the guide
it will definitely leak oil.

Air pressure is not needed to change the seals on our diesels. With the
appropriate piston at top dead center, the valves can only drop about 1mm or so.
The threaded valve stems make it easy to remove the spring for servicing
the seals I have replaced valve springs and seals on a 240D in a couple hours.

Just some random thoughts.
