Michigan. It's well maintained, was in service as an ambulance
at a local hospital a month ago. There's a big hole in the back
where the ambulance body used to be and a small hole in each fender
where the lights were. 14k GVWR, it's an Econoline so the engine
bay is cramped, but the cargo area to length ratio is better than
with an F450.

I've had this happen with bad motor mounts. If it also gets loud and
rumbly when you shift into reverse, take a look at the left motor
mount. It's probably collapsed.

desperate to sell cars down here.

For nothing heavier than a car on a trailer I'd go with the taller rear

get a 1-ton single rear wheel model if that suits your needs better, but
for a car on a trailer I'd think a 3/4 ton would be adequate, and would

  1. The 82 300CD has a developed a nasty deep loud growly rumble
during tight RH turns, worse when power is applied. Sound emanates
from tranny area.

Sounds can telegraph surprisingly far. It could also be bad motor
and/or

tranny mounts allowing the drivetrain elements to hard-contact the body
under turning stress. Or the exhaust system. You could go under and
yank hard on the tail of the tranny and related items to see if there
was unwarranted movement. I'd vote for bad mounts, or a bad half-axle
or wheel bearing. The noise alone would probably tell the experienced
diagnostician what it was, if he could hear it personally.

  2. The 85 300CD A/C compressor won't turn on. I tried the ACC from
the 82 which works ok but it had no effect. What other switches
should be checked? The A/C previously worked fine.

The low-pressure safety switch on the drier? How's the state of charge?
A recent leak can deplete the charge in a hurry.

Well I cant really go with a manual trans, because the wife cant drive
it and refuses to learn. Something about a bad knee. The auto is
easier anyway, but I like the command of a stick. The ones with the
fuel pressure taking out the ip are the 98-02 I believe. The 03 and up
went to the common rail injection etc, have WAY more power and are much

That's the annoying thing. It can go either way. I had a noise on an
E150 once that I swore was tire noise. It sounded exactly like tire
whine, and didn't change with throttle position, only with speed. It
turned out to be the bearings in the rear end.

If I were the one shopping for a truck, I'd use the noise to bargain the
price down. Then I'd change the tires, and if the noise stayed, I'd
start shopping for a junkyard rear axle. They go bad so rarely on most
vehicles that the odds of finding a good one seem pretty good.

noise. I had a howl from my old Chevy 4X4 and it ended up being the
tires.

23K for a truck with 101K miles? I don't know how much these trucks
are, but that sounds like a lot of dough for that many miles. I guess a
lot of it must have been highway miles to put 100,000 miles on it in two
years.

[MBZ] OT, cummins, experts chime in

2006-07-20 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Well I went and test drove a couple of dodge cummins today. First up was
a 05 1 ton dually, long bed, 4 door, 4 wheel drive , with leaver in the
floor for switching, with 6 speed manual. I liked it for the fact that
it has the 6 speed, seems like it would get better mileage than the
autos. It needs all new tires pretty soon, especially in the back and
probably alignment. Rode like a 1 ton of course. Shifted good. Is a
BIG truck. Seems like the rear end was howling. Are they supposed to
howl on these? Price as 23k had 101k miles. Next truck was a 03 2500,
short bed, electronic 4 wheel drive, automatic, 4 door. It had leather,
rode smoother, didnt pull to one side. Price on it was 21.5k. I can
say I REALLY love that cummins motor after driving one of them. What do
you cummins ownere thing about this? Good prices? Keep looking? What
kind of mileage will that 1 ton get with the 6 speed? Will it be worse
than the other truck with automatic 3/4 ton? The thing that had me
worried was the rear end howling on the other 1 ton truck.

Re: [MBZ] Priming the Oil System

I noticed that JB Hebert recently mentioned that he "manually primed the
lubrication system through the pressure sender fitting" when he was ready to
restart his 606 engine after working on the oil pump.

His statement make me consider that maybe I should be doing something like
this before I restart my 606 engine.

What is the reason for priming?

Are we worried the oil pump will not be able to develop suction?

Are we concerned the bearings may run (kind of) dry for too long?

Can anybody describe the procedure and equipment to do this?

Would cranking the engine for a long time before it starts accomplish the
same thing?

Mercedes diesels DO NOT require anything except that you don't drive
until the oil pressure reaches 3+ bar. At cranking speeds, Mercedes has
made provisions for there to be sufficient oil to be present even after
you completely drain or suction the oil out of the engine and replace it
by pouring into the valve cover or into the oil filter housing. If
you've used a group IV synthetic there will be even less of a problem
(MUCH higher film strength).

[MBZ] Priming the Oil System

2006-07-20 Thread ned kleinhenz

I noticed that JB Hebert recently mentioned that he "manually primed the
lubrication system through the pressure sender fitting" when he was ready to
restart his 606 engine after working on the oil pump.

His statement make me consider that maybe I should be doing something like
this before I restart my 606 engine.

What is the reason for priming?

Are we worried the oil pump will not be able to develop suction?

Are we concerned the bearings may run (kind of) dry for too long?

Can anybody describe the procedure and equipment to do this?

Would cranking the engine for a long time before it starts accomplish the
same thing?

Thanks for your help,

Re: [MBZ] 201 status

2006-07-20 Thread Jim Cathey

Yesterday morning it [AC system] still had a full vacuum on it.
Looking _very_ good! Unfortunately the pressure switch doesn't
seem to work, nor did the spare on the parts car.

Went to the U-Pull and got the 190E's auxiliary fan and its pressure
switch. Also picked up a headlight assembly, for merging with the one
that's missing a mounting ear. (Cut and glue?) Got the headlight
mount, too, the plastic one below the light, as one of mine is broken.

I powered up the fan on a battery charger and it worked fine.
However, the fan didn't install too easily because of the damage from
that past wreck. It did eventually go in, and it doesn't even
interfere with the condensor which is a bit of a surprise considering
the condensor's bent-ness. One complication was getting the fan
standoffs (which were also missing) in place: I dropped a sheet metal
screw down between condensor and radiator where it lodged point-in.
Each attempt to pry the two delicate items apart to look for or to try
to retrieve it wedged it in tighter. It didn't seem to penetrate,
however, and I was eventually able to fish it out with a magnet. I
had to pull the headlight to route the wire, and it seems to me I
should have gotten the headlight mount plastic top bits as well.
Sigh.

The pressure switch installed easily, and works properly. That, at
least, is a relief. Using compressed air I got the other two switches
responding, but I wouldn't use them except in an emergency. (Or at
all if it cost more than $7 to charge the AC system.)

Today...

The AC held pressure overnight, so I started it up. What a drag, the
auxiliary fan runs all the time and the compressor not at all. Time
to dive in! The drier's switches for compressor and fan both seem OK.
Off to the manuals, I guess. There are relays involved in both
functions, it's not as simple as the circuitry in earlier cars. Using
the ETM I tracked down the fan temperature sensor and unplugged it.
The fan stopped. Great, a bad sensor. I took a small hammer and
tapped on the sensor body with it reconnected and the fan shut off.
I've seen this before, sometimes it's enough just to do that, the
sensor is merely stuck and will behave itself in future. We'll see.

I used a jumper to short out both the engine temperature sensor and
the drier overtemperature switch. The former runs the auxiliary fan
at high speed, the latter, low. Good. The fan system seems to be OK
now, modulo that sticky sensor.

Nah, that sensor's no good. Its other contact turns off the AC
compressor, and it's stuck too. Unplugging it resulted in the
compressor running normally. Banging on the sensor did nothing to
relieve this problem. I have a spare sensor that I'd bought for
my wife's 560 SL last year, which developed a stuck fan contact,
but that problem cleared itself up before I could install the new
sensor. It's been sitting on a shelf since, I'll probably put it in
this car. The full-throttle switch atop the intake manifold also
works to shut off the AC compressor, as it should.

While doing this testing I noticed a large fuel leak out of the
injector return line between #'s 2-3. That's new. I pulled it off
and replaced it with new line.

I started putting in a test charge of refrigerant. It fills slowly,
perhaps because it's not too warm out yet today, or perhaps because
there is a restriction in the low-side valving. (I've seen that
before.) But I was able to get a fair amount of test refrigerant in
there and I was starting to get reasonable pressures. Unfortunately
my vent temperatures never got very low, and I thought I even detected
some heat coming out the center vent. The sight glass showed plenty
of refrigerant flow. (Very foamy, as is normal for this refrigerant.)
So I pulled the access panels to the water valve and had a look. It's
not always shut off properly. I don't know if it's a control problem
or a vacuum leak problem, this will bear some looking into. I
manually pulled the valve shut, and then I could feel the vacuum
system kick in, but that never really changed anything at the vents.
The water pipe remained pretty hot. I wonder if the water valve
leaks? (I know it can take awhile to pull the heat out of the heater
core at summer temperatures.) Gotta dive into that too.

Only one of the horns works. Shoulda grabbed that horn bar at the
U-Pull! Maybe I'll go back to get the horns, and have a look for
water valves, etc. Must remember to grab the headlight mounting
plastic bits too. Time for breakfast again!

I gave the 76 240D to my friend.

There is some dispute as to what was wrong with the TD. Suffice it to say,
coolant was coming out of the engine where it was not supposed to...bad
gasket, cracked head...swapped it for the 240D, which at least works.

Kaleb knows the guy I swapped it with and supposedly thinks that it was a
$10 fix, but I don't believe it...especially since he won't say what they
think the problem is/was.

I'm reasonably sure the long blocks are interchangeable.
You either move the entire engine & wiring harness (if going 126 to 126)
or pull the IPs, manifolds, etc, and keep everything with the car but
the engine. All those bits are newer on the 350 anyway, no need to
replace them with 1987 parts.

[MBZ] Toyota diesels

2006-07-20 Thread archer
Saw a 2002 Toyota RAV 4 4WD SUV listed as a "Diesel" at a Ford dealer in
the Tampa Bay area. Couldn't find any reference to a diesel RAV 4 in old
copies of Consumers Reports; only the gas burner version which gets 22 mpg.
Would be interesting to know what kind of fuel mileage this diesel version
gets, who makes the engine, and if new versions are available.

Re: [MBZ] W124.193 Rear arms

2006-07-20 Thread Aaron Lam

It's pretty straightforward once you have all the parts in hand. Keep
in mind that the original links have all been superseded to the
new-style ones on the W210 and you'll need a "bolt kit" for the
camber, thrust, and torque links. The toe link can be a bit stubborn
but should come loose with a BFH. The rear axle must be level when
torquing everything down. I did this by first measuring from the
center of the wheel cap to the fender lip, and then raising the axle
(underneath the spring arm) until the distance from center of the
wheel hub to the fender lip was the same as my first measurement.

Only 101? It's 107 here.

I know it's even hotter in AZ I'm not complaining, just stating
the temp so Kaleb doesn't feel so bad.

Imagine it being 101
outside, unhooking the fuel lines from under the car, and having your
arms and back covered with gasoline. That burns. Had to come in from a
break but am fixing to go back out.

[MBZ] NorthWest MogFest 2006

2006-07-20 Thread Zach
Its nearly August, and time for the yearly spamming of all lists
mercedes...

Guess what! Yu are all invited to join us at NorthWest MogFest 2006, a
private celebration of the *other* Mercedes collector vehicles, namely
Unimog off-road trucks. In addition to the usual Unimogs you will also
find Pinzgauers, Haflingers, Hanomags, Syncros, and other odd european
off-road orphans.

NWMF is in sunny Sheridan Oregon, about 1.5 hours west of Portland,
this is a family-friendly laid-back get-together, more like a family
reuinion than a car show or a jeep jamboree... Unimoggers are *at
least* as weird as diesel benz people so you all will fit in just
fine...

More details can be found at
http://www.northwestmogfest.com/nwmf2006/invite
Or contact me offlist...

See you all there!

I saw the first two parts yesterday, but when I click on the link today I
also get the "private video" message.

Somebody must have changed something on the website. I saw a link on
Drudge that takes one to http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9588_22-6095736.html
which is a story about YouTube sued over copyright infringement. Maybe
that has something to do with it.

[MBZ] Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck sighting in Oregon

2006-07-20 Thread Alex Chamberlain
Not sure if this is still of interest to anyone since there hasn't been a
lot of oil discussion lately (who am I kidding?), but I saw the elusive
Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck today. This was at the big new G.I. Joe's (a PNW
chain of sporting goods stores) on SE 82nd and Johnson Creek Blvd in
Portland. $22.79 per gallon. Photographic proof attached!

Re: [MBZ] Rod Bender

2006-07-20 Thread Zeitgeist

That's probably the case for the vacuum/boost controls upstream of the
wastegate, but the version I have had a boost hose running directly from the
turbo to the wastegate, and it allowed me to run over 16 psi boost--that is,
before it began dumping copious amounts of oil into my exhaust stream (long
story - bad rebuild). It's definitely a later model turbo because it
doesn't have the ARV incorporated into the inducer housing. But like you
said, there are lots of little changes between the engine series. I suspect
those challenges are easily overcome by determined DIY-types, but the
engines aren't direct drop-ins in any case.

[MBZ] Junkyard fun

2006-07-20 Thread Jim Cathey

So I'm at the U-Pull again today, and a guy asks me if
I want to buy his '79 280E. Not I, I say. I recommended
he pursue fixing its bad fuel pump and other little things
before sale, as otherwise he won't get squat for it. He
agreed. His wife hates the car, he loves it but it isn't
his daily driver. Baby blue, cream interior, nice shape,
low (I forget the figure) miles.

And yes, I did forget an item or two at the yard. Dinky
ones that aren't worth a trip. Crap.

well I got the tank back in, put a couple of gallons of fuel in and
fired her up. Then discovered the return line to the tank(the rubber
part) is spewing fuel out. I knew I should have replaced that thing
while i had it apart. So guess tomorrow going to have to unhook that
and loose more fuel.

Re: [MBZ] Brits; what's wrong with these people?

2006-07-20 Thread OK Don

Someone posted a link to a news story about an MB that was run over by
a NATO tank (in Norway?) a year or two ago. The tank went over the
drivers side - about one tread width. It crushed the car to the top of
the door window sill. The driver and his wife were not injured. That
convinced me of the structural integrity of the MB.

Well, they used a bit more than wontons on that car, I especially liked
the energetic dissociations of various devices in the final reel. It
was funny in one scene where the rear wiper was still trying to do it's
job with the window missing, the hatch all bent up. If I ever get into
a crash with a monster truck I want to be driving one of these cars
(wait, I think I do).

Because they designed them that way. Same reason that my '90 300D 2.5
uses a different vacuum pump from the all the other 602 engines - both
before and after.
