Connector, bulb, and wiring are all new (new headlights a couple years 
ago).  No loose wires in the fuse box, but I've not pulled the relay

Of course, according to the sticker on the battery it was installed in '95 
making it an 11 year old battery - I think it was due for one. ;-)  It was a

And lead-acid batteries are finicky about being under-charged.  If you
consistently under-charge one, maybe due to an alternator that's on its
way out, it loses capacity.  Deep-discharging a starting battery (i.e.,
running it completely flat) also reduces its capacity.  They're never
quite the same again, even if they appear to charge back up OK.

   Don't know if it has anything to do with your problem or not, but when 
my battery/alternator died yesterday, the SRS and ABS lights both lit up and 
when the rpm's picked up they dimmed - I assume this was from output from 
the alternator.  Since installing the new battery they haven't come back 
on - athough we aren't driving it since the alternator only produces 12.5V 
at 3000 rpm - thankfully, Rusty is shipping a new alt which will arrive 
Monday.  Looks pretty easy to switch out.  And I'll definately disconnect 
the battery - learned *that* lesson on the Chev Malibu.


Sorry - got distracted - back to your question ;-)

   I wonder if there's a loose connection somewhere in the SRS system 
causing a leak in volts or watts - whichever is in those wires with the 
smoke.But whatever you do, never, ever allow the smoke to get out of the 
wires. Fortunately  smoke can be bought on eBay if you're willing to pay a 
credit card surcharge, and wait 4 looong days for it to arrive in a box 
that's beat all to hell box.  But even with the replacement smoke (provided 
free with new Lucas systems) I bet it's a PITA to get the smoke back in 
those itty-bitty wires.,

when gas stations used to charge an extra percentage if you paid with a
credit card, to make up the merchant fees?  They don't do that anymore.

Guilty as charged. But it isn't necessarily to avoid eBay fees, it is
to sell the item dirt cheap but not lose money on the legitimate fees.
I think everyone knows what is happening when they bid. And I don't
inflate too much, maybe $3 over actual costs. Nothing sucks as much as
having an item go for a penny, charging actual mailing fees, and then
losing money when eBay tacks on their costs.

PayPals fees. I am just trying to clear my basement and garage of crap,

I think the underlying problem here is that eBay has encouraged the
creation of a lot of fixed-price stores.  It's really changed the
character of it, because a lot of them are commercial operations that
are using eBay instead of setting up their own e-commerce site.

I can remember when having a successful auction on eBay did not require a
postal scale and a spreadsheet.


You did it. You got me started. I used to accept PP, had all their 
wonderful

crap all over my auctions, then they came up with the policy that if you
accepted PP you HAD to take credit cards. AND you have to pay like 3% of
every sale, cc or not. Absolute BS for a guy like me who sells rummage 
items

for less than ten bucks. I think they want nothing but big business style
auctions and screw the little guy. The little guys are who made eBay what 
it

is in the first place.

I thought the same thing.  I can;t remember the last time I saw that cash 
price/credit price stuff - until drumroll please, I went to a new 
truckstop to fill the diesel up - cash or debit was $.03 cheaper than the 
credit  price.  It's a new Pilot Truck stop on I-95 in Va. just down the 
street from me.  Very convienent and good prices.  Diesel was $2.69/gal. 
last time I filled up.

They're CALLED 12V batteries.  They are actually 13.2v.  You need more

that voltage so that it brings it up to that level and/or otherwise has
spare power without worrying about running down the battery.

failing that, I'd buy a handful of fuses and start pulling bulbs in the
circuit - r tail light - replace fuse see if it blows, if yes, put 
that bulb

back and remove the LP bulb - and so on and so forth.


Better/cheaper is to use clip leads to hook an old-fashioned sealed beam
headlight in circuit instead.  It shouldn't light up brightly if there
is no short, then go looking.  I'd look at the tail and parking lights.
They're all fairly easy to disconnect.  The dash dimmer can start to
fall apart and short out, but that's a little harder to get at.  (Though
you might try fiddling with that to see if you affect things.)

This is a good point. People buying on eBay have become increasingly
impatient to have their stuff NOW. It's become markedly worse over the last
year. I have to deal with it more than most of you, as shipping from Canada
takes 2-3x your domestic time.

There is a good reason you will see disclaimers in some listings reading
something like "sellers are not responsible for transit time" (comes up
automatically when you specify your shipping cost, in the listing).

What people fail to grasp is that buying from Kaleb or me on eBay isn't the
same as ordering from Amazon.com or some other mail-order outlet with a
dedicated shipping department that cranks stuff out the next day and
probably gets bulk pickups from USPS. I TRY to ship within 48 hours of
payment, but it often takes five to eight days for me to get the item packed
and to the post office.

I've followed this thread on and off and frankly I'm not devestated by what
happened. The seller tried a cheesy ploy and got nailed. Who knows, this may
be a 17-year-old selling this stuff.  On the 1-10 scale of possible eBay
FUBARs, this barely gets beyond 2.

The Frankenheap has been dripping fuel for a couple of weeks.  I
hadn't had time to deal with it until today.  I jacked it up, and
before I tackled the (wet) fuel hoses I noticed that the differential
was very oily/dirty.  I chipped off the worst of the chunks around the
filler plug and then wire-brushed it off.  The plug came out easily,
and a pinkie dip showed that it was down significantly.  I poured
together several remnant bottles of gear oil, and managed to assemble
about half a quart that I could squirt into the differential.  That
brought the level up to nearly full.  The leak appears to be largely
at the passenger side half shaft.  It's no doubt a slow leak, it'll
probably be good again for a few more years.  I'll try to keep an eye
on it.

The return fuel line looked the worst, and messing with it showed
seepage through the braid, enough to drip.  I was unable to loosen the
clamp screws, but I _could_ pry the ends off of their fittings,
clamps and all.  The hose was brittle, no surprise, and tore in half
on one end.  I replaced it with some 5/16" line I had, and two good
salvaged clamps.

The feed line, which is an odd reduction size of rubber, also looks
like it is seeping.  I don't have a new piece, but I found the crappy
"cigar hose" that I took off this car, it had cracks in one end but
not the other.  (I had to do some serious excavation in the trunk to
find it.)  I cut off the good end and used it instead of the correct
(and custom) rubber piece.  It wasn't quite as snug a fit as it should
be on the big end but the band clamp cinched it down anyway.  Jalopy
time!  I drained the tank into a boat gas can before I put on the
'new' rubber; there wasn't that much fuel left in it.  I left it up on
the stands while I went in for breakfast, I'll see if it has any leaks
when I return No leaks.

I boxed up all the 'enhancement' parts I found in the nearly-full
trunk, such as cruise control, etc., and labeled it for ease of future
location in storage.  I deployed all the rest of the parts into the
more-or-less correct parts piles.  It has been far too long that the
trunk was unusable because it was full of crap!  I also rearranged the
trunk light wiring clips on the hinge, they were all bunched up and
the wire was slack and vulnerable to being caught on things.

I then completely emptied the trunk and vacuumed it out.  I also
washed the trunk mat.  While the mat was drying I assembled the tool
kit I'd been collecting for the car, and put it in the plastic case.
(Wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, jumper cables, and a tow strap.  I
think I'm missing 15mm and 19mm wrenches, but am otherwise covered.
Could use a pair of wire cutters too.)  I then put the few items back
in the trunk that belonged there, it's a real improvement!

Actually, a lot still do, and it is very prevalent at truck stops at
the diesel pumps.

I always preferred the 2-3% 'cash discount' myself, but whatever.

Be careful.  Cashier's checks can be forged.  Often the bank will go so
far as to put the money in your account, then later take it back and
sock you with a fee for presenting a non-payable item.

Yup.  I won't even list anything I don't expect to go for at least $10,
anymore.  Anything less than that goes in the dumpster or the garage
sale pile.

It's basically the same thing the credit card companies do.  Remember
when gas stations used to charge an extra percentage if you paid with a
credit card, to make up the merchant fees?  They don't do that anymore. 
I'm guessing everyone just pays a little more, whether they're paying
with credit or cash.

Where did you tap in to check the vacuum?  The fact that it's going
*down* when you rev the engine makes me wonder if you tapped into the
line that goes to the transmission, which has vacuum bled off it by a
valve on the injector pump.

version cummins(seems WAY WAY slower than the next year), lot price 27k,
internet price, 23.9k, "special" today only price 22.9k. I just didnt
really like that truck, really prefer cruise for long trips.  Back to
the first dealer to look at a different truck.  Its an 05 with the HO
325hp cummins, long bed, club cab, 6 speed manual, its also a basic
model with no cruise, manaul windows, etc, had 20k miles with factory
warranty still remaining.  Price in it was 24.9k.  Liked that one but
the spouse cant drive stick and refused to learn.  But didnt like the no
options though.

Anyway, sorry for the rambling, what do the dodge people thing about
those prices?  And what about the 4 or 5 speed auto?

Since 500 ppm sulfur content was introduced in the early '90s, soot 
content of the oil is USUALLY the limiting factor requiring the oil be

to be changed when it fills up with soot and lower sulfur content

Oh, and the old-style charging voltage was 13.8 for the 12V battery.
Things like stereos and radio transmitters required that much in order
to develop rated power, since they were intended to be used with the
vehicle running.

The battery's open circuit voltage is actually something above 12V, the
chemistry has changed in the 100 years (?) that they've been making
lead-acid batteries.  Doping, and all.  And it never was _exactly_
12V, you have to look up the electrochemical potentials of lead and
lead sulfide [?] and subtract them to get the per-cell voltage, then
multiply by 6.  This is only the zero-current terminal voltage anyway, 
and

for a chemistry that isn't really what's being used now.  Anyway, if
you don't apply significantly above the terminal voltage they simply
won't charge in less than a decade or so.  Most people are less patient
than that.  The charging voltage is a compromise value that will push
enough current in to charge the battery in a reasonable time, yet isn't
so high that the battery will be damaged by overcharging.

A plugged main fuel filter can take a few seconds off the 0-60 time and

often suffers as well.

They're CALLED 12V batteries.  They are actually 13.2v.  You need more than
that voltage so that it brings it up to that level and/or otherwise has
spare power without worrying about running down the battery.

I just really dont care too much for fords.  She would drive it every 
once in a while, but not all the time.  The allison might be one reason 
why the duramax seems to be a little more expensive than the dodge

one in there for now. It must be a
replacement, I would think as it is a plastic body whereas most of the others 
were the ceramic body. Can't recall

On other news, I got the windshield washer working again. Just blew the hood 
nozzles out with air. Driver's side
started to work. Had to use a needle on the passenger side but both were 
working fine last evening. Happy to have
them back working.

I didn't think that there was any stock use for the 5A yellow fuse.
The smallest I've ever seen is the ubiquitous 8A white.  You could
probably put one in, I doubt the wire involved was sufficiently
smaller in gauge such that it would fry if there was an extra 3A
permitted to flow.

Probably, given that any oil blowby goes into the turbo for compression
and delivery to the manifold, where the ALDA tap is.  If you had any
intake-side turbo oil seal leakage it would exacerbate this condition.
I wouldn't expect to see much, however, given that there is no flow
through the tube, it should be just whatever oil 'rain' there is at
the tap hole gradually building up.  If you ever pulled the ALDA line
off it'd immediately get blown throughout the tubing, and ALDAs do
leak ever so slightly normally.  The oil could migrate.

This is all just a guess, please refer to actual knowledgeable people
for a better answer.

The best deal of those three is the '05 with 20K miles on it for $24,900. 
The '03 with the SO (standard output) Cummins is wy too high priced, and 
the '03 with 99K miles on it isn't the best deal at $20K.  That 325HP HO 
Cummins is a real powerhouse, but the 305HP version in the earlier trucks is 
also good, much better than the SO 250HP version.  The 305HP Cummins in my 
'03 with a 6spd manual behind it was plenty enough to pull our 9000LB loaded 
travel trailer, even in the mountains.  I would have kept that truck if the 
drivers in my family felt more comfortable driving it, but I went for the 
new truck with the auto tranny, and it's well liked by everyone including me 
as I sit in the passenger's seat enjoying the sound of the MONSTER CUMMINS! 
Keep on test driving them and be SURE of what truck and cab configuration 
will meet your needs.  Then, find one that's in your budget and take it 
home!

back and remove the LP bulb - and so on and so forth.


Better/cheaper is to use clip leads to hook an old-fashioned sealed beam
headlight in circuit instead.  It shouldn't light up brightly if there
is no short, then go looking.  I'd look at the tail and parking lights.
They're all fairly easy to disconnect.  The dash dimmer can start to
fall apart and short out, but that's a little harder to get at.  (Though
you might try fiddling with that to see if you affect things.)

Check mid-80's Camrys for similar Nippondenso compressors, maybe

I had a ignition put on my 1980 300D and the steering lock now doesn't 
work. and there doesn't seem to be any Vacuum, barely shuts the engine 
off. I got a mighty vac tool and want to know how much vacuum the pump 
should be putting out.


Sounds like they screwed up the install.  The steering lock mechanism is
what actuates the vacuum shutoff valve, and they're both right next to
the ignition switch.

I've seen this, "thing",  a couple of times - a battery will die and 
the

alternator will die at the same time.  My theory is the alternator is
working extra hard trying to keep the battery charged - which it can;t 
do
because the battery is shorted, etc - so the alt dies because it's 
running
wide open almost all the time - and summer comes along and the added 
electr

needs of ACC and the AC blower - creates even more demand.


This _can_ happen, but it's fairly rare.  When you overload the 
alternator

for a significant amount of time the diodes can be overheated, and blow.
It's kind of hard to do, because if you just short out the alternator it
loses the ability to excite its own field and it just goes limp on ya.
Should be OK when the short is removed.  But an extra-heavy load, such
as a badly leaking (electrically) battery could maybe do it.  As I said,
it's rare but I have heard of it.

No.  Something is leaking.  Besides the obvious sources it could be the
brake booster itself, or the check valve(s) inside the vacuum pump.

Just bought my first older Mercedes- a 1972 280 CE. First major 
problem with

it is the sunroof doesn't work at all. No sound at all when button is
pressed. The previous owner said it just stopped working one day.

new switch but still no good. Again any ideas and/or diagrams


Check all fuses, and on the 114 there can be more than one auxiliary
fuse box so look around.

You could use a meter on the switch contacts to see that the switch
itself is getting power.  Then you can go back to the motor to see if
it's getting power when you actuate it.  Etc.

power locks etc, 40K miles,  liked the color better, short bed, 250hp 
version cummins(seems WAY WAY slower than the next year), lot price 27k, 
internet price, 23.9k, "special" today only price 22.9k. I just didnt 
really like that truck, really prefer cruise for long trips.  Back to 
the first dealer to look at a different truck.  Its an 05 with the HO 
325hp cummins, long bed, club cab, 6 speed manual, its also a basic 
model with no cruise, manaul windows, etc, had 20k miles with factory 
warranty still remaining.  Price in it was 24.9k.  Liked that one but 
the spouse cant drive stick and refused to learn.  But didnt like the no 
options though.

Anyway, sorry for the rambling, what do the dodge people thing about 
those prices?  And what about the 4 or 5 speed auto?

I sell a lot on eBay and I agree that you have to watch their fees. They can
creep up to the point where you can spend half of your selling price on eBay
and PayPal. I've seen a lot of items sell in the $1.00 - $3.00 range & with
actual shipping. These sellers just don't understand. Even items you pick up
for next to nothing need to sell for $4.00 or more to make listing & selling
worth the trouble.

It also helps to buffer the freight by $0.50 - $1.00. You'll spend more than
$1.00 on a box & tape for a single item.

I checked the vacuum with a mighty vac, seems that it idles at 14 inches and 
when I rev the engine it goes to like 5 inches. recovers to maybe 16 at best.. 
Now this is just sitting still. Is this what is supposed to happen?

That would be an auction killer, I think. I've seen folks do that. I think
most bidders would rather unknowingly pay hidden costs than be slapped in
the face with an obvious surcharge.

accepted PP you HAD to take credit cards. AND you have to pay like 3% of
every sale, cc or not. Absolute BS for a guy like me who sells rummage items
for less than ten bucks. I think they want nothing but big business style
auctions and screw the little guy. The little guys are who made eBay what it
is in the first place.

This can be sticky and sometimes completely innocent.  Brand new
OM606IP I recently bought on german ebay with the intention of trading
for a rebuild to go into my '87 wagon was weeks arriving even though
I'd paid for 'express' shipping.  Turned out it got to US customs
quick time at which point it was transfered from Deutsch Post to the
good ol' USPS (w/ no tracking) for final delivery.  Took about 3 weeks
to get from JFK to me after taking no time at all to get to JFK from
the fatherland.  SNAFU is to be expected whenever those idiots get
into the act.  Left me a little red faced for the - albeit goot
natured I'll warrant - grief I gave the seller in the interim,
especially after I'd determined that it'd have cost ~$250 to ship the
thing FedEx or DHL instead of the EUR50 I paid for DP.

sell the item dirt cheap but not lose money on the legitimate fees. I

everyone knows what is happening when they bid. And I don't inflate too
much, maybe $3 over actual costs. Nothing sucks as much as having an item

for a penny, charging actual mailing fees, and then losing money when eBay
tacks on their costs.



No doubt. I just got in a pissing contest on an eBay PayPal forum about 
PayPals fees. I am just trying to clear my basement and garage of crap, that

Larry T makes an excellent point about the lack of a voltmeter on a MB or
any diesel for that matter..   IF you see less than 10 volts while cranking,
you better start checking otherwise you will wind up stranded.

Monitoring a voltmeter will tell you much about the charging system and
alert you (usually) to something that is going to happen to your battery
system soon.

It is easy enough to install a voltmeter.  If you do not like the idea of
making holes somewhere in the dash, then try a voltmeter that has a
cigarette lighter plug on the end of it and plug it into the cigarette
lighter inlet.

Speaking of weird things like that, the SRS light is flashing on for
several seconds, seemingly at random, in the '90 300D 2.5. Is this a
clue to anything?

Don, do a Google search for Ford Explorer instrument cluster bulbs
burnt out, or something like that and bet it will lwead you to an
Useres List.

Did that years ago when I had a Bronco II.

Believe me, I have tried to get my wife to sell her Explorer. She loves
it.  This is the first Ford I have ever had.  I will say this for it, we
have not had any trouble at all since we bought it three years ago.  We
bought it will 74XXX miles. Now it has 102,000 miles.  I thought I would
hate it and we would have lots of problems (knock wood).  It has been a
fine car.  If the only problem we have is the instrument cluster bulbs
going out, I keep it.



I don't ever have to drive it, unless it is a time when we need an SUV
to haul something. In those situations I am glad we have it. Otherwise,
my wife drives it and all I have to do is bring it to the Ford Dealer
for my free oil changes.
