you are making me want to go somewhere by train!

last time i went anywhere was like 20 years ago, from san jose, ca to
seattle. i kind of enjoyed it . they had some kind of very cheap
promo deal on that train from los angeles, so we played lots of
different card and tile games with people from the hood we would never
meet otherwise. i didn't like sleeping in the seat though. i think
if i had some kind of sleeper car, the trip would have been just
grand.

The only place I'd even think of suggesting synthetic is better for the car is
in the transmission. I haven't ever heard anybody say Mobil 1 in the
transmission didn't work out. Well other than the other poster who had a dirty
transmission but that wasn't the Mobil 1's fault.

Synthetic engine oil is great, it makes the car start easier when its cold and
lets my 190D go 10,000 miles between oil changes both of which in this cold
weather have been GREAT.
If you don't drive your Benz when its cold or can't (or don't want to) take
advantage of the long change interval then synthetic isn't a good choice for
you, there are plenty of very good conventional oils.

Synthetic grease, eh, whatever... I play with old snowmobiles, snowmobiles are
hard on grease. I tried some synthetic, it didn't seem to make any difference,
things were stiff until they warmed up a little just like with regular grease
and it disappeared with the exact same annoying regularity. Didn't seem like
I'd gained anything.

Gee, what happened to the - you must use synthetic - line? Surely this
must hold for grease as well as oil.

Is the factory MB grease synthetic? For what it is worth, I have been
using a red colored synthetic grease in
everything for the past few years. Don't know how good it is - a house
brand so hard to quantify perhaps - much
more expensive than the name brand non-synthetic stuff.

Hello,
I have a '91 Mercedes 300D with a Becker Grand Prix head unit and a
Tuner and seperate amp in the trunk. The parts are no longer available to
repair the OEM changer. I am told it is possible to attach a MP3 player or
an iPod to this system. I am a novice - so please be patient with my
ignorance.

Is there an adapter that can be connected to the amp or tuner in the
trunk so I can put a MP3 or iPod in the trunk? Or perhaps the head unit can
be wired to accept a MP or iPod and then put one or the other in the
glovebox?

What's the difference between iPod 1 and iPod 2? Is there a Aux input
somewhere I can use with your fmm-100?

I am willing to consider placing the MP3 or iPod in the trunk or the
glovebox - it doesn't matter to me - especially if the MP3 has a large HD.

Larry -Harman-Becker will do a dandy "hidden" mod to the stock car radio
for

$100, so that you can plug in an MP3 player. The audio controls still
work

on the radio, and when the MP3 is unplugged, the radio functions normally.
I did that for my '83 SD, and mounted the small jack enclosure inside the
glove box. You can load a lot of CDs into the MP3 and save yourself a lot
of trouble with changers in the trunk, wiring, etc.

I just added an iPod connection to my wife's Toyota Highlander. Cost me
about $130 because I needed an aux input amp. Piece of cake...completely
plug and play except for the power connection, which was optional and I
haven't done yet. Got the parts from www.installer.com, they seem to
have
connectors that fit just about any stereo system. In some cases, it's
just

a matter of plugging an adapter into the aux input RCA ports (if they
existah, there's the rub) OTOH, if the head unit has a connector
to
go to a rear changer, it's likely that these guys have a plug and an
adapter

that will fit it. YMMV.

If all you need is an RCA plug input, go to Radio Shack and get an RCA to
2.5mm adapter for under $10 and you are home free. Same adapter I use to
connect the iPod to my living room stereo system

In addition to every CD I own, I've probably got 5 or 6 GB of books on
tape

from Audible.com loaded. Makes the 30 mile commute more tolerable or even
useful.

Chain stretch on that engine is easily measured. If the stretch exceeds
4 degrees the chain should be replaced. Average stretch seems to be
between 0.5 to 1 degree of stretch per 100,000 miles if oiol is changed
at prudent intervals.

I've attached the TSB on measuring stretch!

Any attempt to defeat the EGR system disables the turbo! Turbo failures
in OM502,96 engines are VERY rare. Most failures characterized as turbo
failures are actually wastegate, pressure line or EGR failures. Get the
EGR system working as it should and the turbo will work as long as the
pressure line from the intake manifold to the ALDA is not occluded.

One can certainly enjoy a performance car in everyday driving. Top speed
isn't the only reason to own one these machines although the RS is a bit of
overkill. There are enough 911 GT3s (not RS) around to prove that.

Some years back someone asked the question with reference to new MBs but it
also applies to all the supercars on the market.

"Why do people buy these cars, anyway?" Davide's answer was "Because they
can" and that says it all.

Gee, what happened to the - you must use synthetic - line? Surely this must
hold for grease as well as oil.

Is the factory MB grease synthetic? For what it is worth, I have been using a
red colored synthetic grease in
everything for the past few years. Don't know how good it is - a house brand so
hard to quantify perhaps - much
more expensive than the name brand non-synthetic stuff.

Not sure what vehicle you;re talking about - but the grease MB sells is
in a tube which contains exactly enough to do both front wheels - seperate
the tube into 2 halves and you have the right amount for each wheel. IIRC,
the WSM tells how much goes into each hub and cap.

The key is to buy the grease from MB so you get the proper amount.
Unless you have a way to precisely measure 8 oz. or 12 oz of grease - can't
recall which it is - it's important to buy the good stuff from MB.

No doubt Amtrak has issues, for this run its perfect though. It takes 3.5 hours
to go from Boston to Manhattan.
To fly takes 30 minutes but...
Arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before the flight.
Theres no point in arriving more than 15 minutes before the train...
The plane takes you into Queens, all my business is in Manhattan so thats at
LEAST a 40 minute cab ride.
I can plug in my laptop on the train, nevermind the fact that the seating area
is big enough that I can ACTUALLY USE my laptop.
I can get up and get a snack in the cafe car, sure the prices are high but
theres no problem bringing your own food...
Both Boston's South Station and NYC's Penn Station have good places to eat
right in the train station. Logan has a couple good places, JFK and Laguardia
don't or at least not that I've found.

They cost almost exactly the same depending on what time of day you go. I see
no reason to EVER fly to NYC...

For my honeymoon we took the train from Albany to Niagra Falls. It took about 8
hours which is only a little more than it'd take you to drive. I don't remember
exactly but I don't think it was all that expensive, around the same as flying
I'd think. Again it was MUCH more comfortable...
Of course on that run flying is MUCH faster but that was October 1, 2001 and
nothing was going to make my wife get on an airplane. Irrational I know but
there you are.

Ah, I have been meaning to bring this up as well.

I have the vacuum disconnected on my '82 300sd, and when it's in Drive it
gives a LOUD clunk on the 3-2 downshift. If I have the selector in S,
however, it glides through the 3-2.

Is this anything to worry about? My indy expressed some concern, last time
he drove it, saying he has never heard one this loud before... but when I
explained that it was ok with the selector lever in the other position, he
sort of grunted "Oh, well don't worry about it then."

Opinions?

I took mine to the Jiffy Lube to have them flushed. Back then they did
filters with the flush as part of the service. Apparently now they charge
like an extra $40 to change the filter too.
I kinda think the tranny cooler is part of the radiator, like just a bottom
or side chamber.

MBZ content: My 83' 300D CLUNKS into pretty much every gear. I assume it's
a lack of vacuum. It's done it since i've had it, but I hear that is the
way they last the longest. I've gotten used to it, but it throws people off

Thanks Levi. Sometimes the '98 Legacy in question does that "drop out of
gear" thing, sometimes more of a slip-and-flare like a worn M-B auto, and
sometimes when cold it shifts hard and late---sort of "step on the gas,
wait, then WHAM!"

Did you do the flush and filter change yourself? I've "changed" what I
could on the Legacy twice with the drain plug on the pan, but I'm well
aware
that that method doesn't get anywhere near all the fluid. I'd like to
change it all by the method of disconnecting the input line to the
transmission cooler and running the engine while pouring fresh fluid in
the
top, but I have two problems: can't find the cooler (is it inside one of
the
front fenders?) and can't get the tranny pan off to change the filter at
the
same time (the factory used something like RTV instead of a real gasket
and
it might as well be welded shut for all the luck I've had breaking the
seal).

(Mercedes content: Valvoline "High Mileage" ATF [in a bright red bottle]
seemed to help the Subaru shift better for a little while, then the
symptoms
returned. Anyone tried this stuff in an older M-B transmission, or should
I
just stick to Mobil 1? Does the Lucas magic transmission additive worth
trying? [Some people swear by it.] My 300D goes "CLUNK!" into reverse
and
occasionally on the 1-2 shift at light throttle, but otherwise shifts
perfectly---crisp but not harsh.)

...Many complaints from my wife about the windshield. Besides the
cracking from road rocks it's also pitted from road sand. She also
didn't like the level of illumination from the instrument cluster.
(On a 123? Imagine that!) And she was annoyed to find that the
Becker tape deck wouldn't accept a CD! Sheesh, honey, I don't know
what you want. It doesn't wobble on the road and it has both a
functioning radio and a cupholder. Were those not the main criteria?
At least it's clean and quiet.

The windshield replacement job scares me, I hear it's rather
difficult. I have a good used replacement and a new rubber seal. My
big plan had been to pull the badly-cracked and chewed dash (for
replacement and for repair of the center vent ACC pod) and, while it
and all the associated window trim was out, to try tackling the
windshield then. But I don't want to attempt any of this while the
car is in service.

Monday, March 12, 2007

I removed the B pillar on the passenger side to expose the windlace.
While there I noticed some mold in some of the seat belt, so I got a
bucket of water and some Simple Green and washed it out. I then
pulled down the ratty windlace pieces, front and back, and snipped
them off to leave the still good parts in place. Then I took my
collection of ruined windlace, cut off some good ends, and pieced
together a serviceable, if not beautiful, set of windlace out of it
all. I just glued up the pieces much as if it had been a new set. It
doesn't look as bad as you might think, but it in no way can be
mistaken for a nice new set! I then reassembled the B pillar.

they are factory or not. If you really wanted a hitch on the GT3 RS, you'd
have to opt for the side pipe option too. hee hee.

Larry -Harman-Becker will do a dandy "hidden" mod to the stock car radio for

$100, so that you can plug in an MP3 player. The audio controls still work
on the radio, and when the MP3 is unplugged, the radio functions normally.

Got the parts from www.installer.com, they seem to have
connectors that fit just about any stereo system. In some cases, it's just
a matter of plugging an adapter into the aux input RCA ports (if they
existah, there's the rub) OTOH, if the head unit has a connector to
go to a rear changer, it's likely that these guys have a plug and an adapter
that will fit it. YMMV.

If all you need is an RCA plug input, go to Radio Shack and get an RCA to
2.5mm adapter for under $10 and you are home free. Same adapter I use to
connect the iPod to my living room stereo system

In addition to every CD I own, I've probably got 5 or 6 GB of books on tape
from Audible.com loaded. Makes the 30 mile commute more tolerable or even
useful.

[MBZ] The Chicken Wagon rides again!

2007-03-12 Thread Jim Cathey

It's back on the road! Nothing was drastically wrong with it,
at least when I put it away, we just didn't have any call to
drive it for a couple of years. Anyway, that changed a bit,
and I also have contemplated selling it...

Tuesday, February 20, 2007

The snow tires on the SDL are going out, twisted belts or something,
so I thought I'd un-retire this car for the remainder of winter
driving season as it has snow tires on it. I drove it to the
licensing place, where they vectored me to the emissions testing
place. They tell me it's its last test! After that it'll be old
enough it's exempt. Fortunately the car passed (not difficult for a
diesel), but it's still not licensed. I'll have to go back another
time.

While driving the car around I found that the RF brake was dragging
pretty badly, the parking brake was inoperative, the brake fluid in
the rearward reservoir is low, and the tranny was misbehaving rather
scarily, at least at first. (Couldn't seem to solidly engage the
final gear [3] unless I feathered the throttle.) That got better
as the car warmed up. Sigh.

Wednesday, February 21, 2007

I polled the mailing list for suggestions on removing the neutral
safety switch. Got a few, some helpful! Jacked up the car
preparatory to surgery. Plan to work on the neutral safety switch,
the dragging caliper, the parking brakes, the bad half-axle, and a
fluid change for the tranny. (And anything else I find while I'm
under there.)

Thursday, February 22, 2007

OK, I got the switch off. As predicted (not by me), there is
no sign of internal shorting. Oh well, I always wanted to know
how to take them off anyway! Back into the trunk I go, I guess.

What a grimy mess. For those who want to know, the tricks are to
remove the crossbrace and the speedometer and kickdown couplings.
That makes enough room in the area that you can use a wedge of wood
to shift over the tranny to make a bit more room on the side. There
is a rotating collar holding the connector in, that has to be
persuaded to the right position, then the round plug (with funny
angled boot) will pull straight out. Then you can remove the
shifter linkage, yes the bolt must be entirely removed. (Same
as for the speedometer cable.) With enough scrubbing in the
area I found the two 10mm bolts that hold it in, one's above
the shifter linkage and the other is above the connector.
Then the whole thing pops off, and is ready for the solvent
tank. (I didn't immerse it, just scrubbed it under the flow.)

While it feels kind of nasty for a switch, there was no sign of
electrical problems. At least it's clean now! It's pretty solidly
riveted together, in the absence of any overt problems I don't think
I'll go in.

While under there I noticed that there are some (two?) missing rubber
clamp buffers on the fuel lines. Will add it to the list. There's
also some frame surface rust starting where the undercoating and paint
is gone, partly due to a brake fluid bath. Must attend to that.

Friday, February 23, 2007

A disassembly of the taillight assemblies revealed no smoking guns. I
took them completely apart, down to the individual socket level, and
disassembled the wiring harness connector shells as well. Nothing, no
signs of abraded insulation, corrosion, broken connector springs...

So, I hooked up a battery charger to the connector for the neutral
safety switch (NSS) and ran the lights that way. Flexure and pounding
did nothing, the lights just worked. Left with few other suspects, I
drilled out the five aluminum rivets that hold the NSS together. (It
is possible to have a pinched wire or something in the harness, but
good luck finding that!) The inside of the switch looked good. A bit
of crud built up in the bottom, if it was conductive it could maybe do
some harm as the lamp switch contacts are very close to the aluminum
cover there. But not so close as to make me suspicious. Otherwise
the insides looked pretty good. I did notice that the 'hot' leaf for
the lamps had more sideways flex in it than I'd like, if it got far
enough out of plane it could perhaps contact the cover and blow the
fuse, but that is really stretching it. To 'cure' this I put a blob
of Shoe Goo over its mounting end, there should be no way once that is
cured for the thing to flex much towards the cover. But I really
don't expect this to have any effect. At this point I think I just
need to put it all back together and see what happens, I'm running out
of ideas. I am _positive_ that the fuses blew upon shifting into
reverse, I don't think it could have been anything else on the same
circuit.

I'm going to have to buy some suitable screws for putting the NSS
back together, I don't think I have anything that will work.

I love taking the train, but Amtrak is SO bad in the midwest it is
practically unbearable. 50 hours from Madison, WI to Deming, NM. They have some
good lines on th East coast, where I assume you are (Manhattan), but elsewhere
it is awful. If I had to go from Kansas City to South Carolina - I have to
change trains in CHICAGO!! In almost every case, flying is cheaper than the
train, sadly.

Yeah, and it's been in decline ever since GM got out of the locomotive
business and got into fleet buses big-time, hence the campaign in the
60s to
scrap streetcars all over North America.

Here in Canada we lost our truly national passenger rail system back in
the
80s. By amazing coincidence, the prime minister at the time had close
(cough) ties with Power Corp., which coincidentally at that time
controlled
the Canadian equivalent of Greyhound Lines.

With the current trends in diesel prices, however, the final irony is
that
in some cases you can now travel by rail cheaper than by bus. The
problem
that we no longer have passenger rail service outside the busiest
traffic
corridors.

I just sent mine in by insured USPS, and had it returned within a week.

I bought a 30 GB MP3 player made by Phillips, as it cost a lot less than
going with the Apple monopoly (iPod). The player came with all the software
needed to put any audio you can get into a PC onto the player. I loaded up
probably 6-8 CDs and didn't begin to tax the storage limits. And yes, since
it is shirt pocket size, it disappears into the glove box!

supposedly improves reception.

Maybe it'll help your situation?

Larry -Harman-Becker will do a dandy "hidden" mod to the stock car radio
for
$100, so that you can plug in an MP3 player. The audio controls still
work

on the radio, and when the MP3 is unplugged, the radio functions normally.
I did that for my '83 SD, and mounted the small jack enclosure inside the
glove box. You can load a lot of CDs into the MP3 and save yourself a lot
of trouble with changers in the trunk, wiring, etc.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Any good Subaru forum out there?

2007-03-12 Thread Levi Smith

I'd definitely do the tranny flush/filter change. That's fixed any of 3
slight issues I've had with both of our 97' Sube tranny's. Though none of
those were really slipping. Twice mine would just drop out of a gear for a
second if I held it to the floor, but letting up on the gas dropped it back
in. And my wife's was keeping the center clutch engaged a bit too much so
it was binding a bit turning in parking lots. All of these issues were with
around 100K miles on that set of tranny fluid/filter though and the
flush/filter change fixed them. The only Slipping I've dealt with was when
I tried putting in synthetic fluid in mine with 110K miles on it.
Apparently mine's worn enough that it doesn't like synthetic.

The only Sube groups I'm on are the Yahoo Outback Sport lists. Not bad
groups by any means, but there seems to only be a handful of people who have
a whole lot of knowledge.

I wasn't following closely. How do these "no problem found" reports raise
new questions without answering previous questions (what questions were

Craig

Craig,

The new questions include "Is this guy in Nigeria?"

The original question would be "Why is an 03 H2 only $5,300?" Note
correct number and position of zeros.

As the Carfax does not show a write off by insurance for theft of
severe damage it makes me wary.

The down side I can see that it does not have a trailer hitch, be a pain to

That makes sense to change out the whole thing - the surprising thing is
that the biggest M-B dealer in the D.C. area only changed out the old ball
joints on my older 124, even left the old ones in the trunk!
It's nice to have an honest dealer, even if it might have saved money in the
long run to change out the complete arms.

The reason for changing the control arm complete is that replacing the
pivot bushings is a real pain and hard to get right (they are crimped
in), and it's far easier to just swap the control arm for a new one.
You get the new ball joint and new bushing in one shot. I'ts not much
more work to change it complete -- compress spring, unclamp balljoint
pivot, remove pivot bolts, put the new one in, replace bolts, release
spring. Easier than the ball joint, which can be a PITA.

Larry -Harman-Becker will do a dandy "hidden" mod to the stock car radio for
$100, so that you can plug in an MP3 player. The audio controls still work
on the radio, and when the MP3 is unplugged, the radio functions normally.
I did that for my '83 SD, and mounted the small jack enclosure inside the
glove box. You can load a lot of CDs into the MP3 and save yourself a lot
of trouble with changers in the trunk, wiring, etc.

Yeah, and it's been in decline ever since GM got out of the locomotive
business and got into fleet buses big-time, hence the campaign in the 60s to
scrap streetcars all over North America.

Here in Canada we lost our truly national passenger rail system back in the
80s. By amazing coincidence, the prime minister at the time had close
(cough) ties with Power Corp., which coincidentally at that time controlled
the Canadian equivalent of Greyhound Lines.

With the current trends in diesel prices, however, the final irony is that
in some cases you can now travel by rail cheaper than by bus. The problem
that we no longer have passenger rail service outside the busiest traffic
corridors.

Re: [MBZ] hijacked to certainty

2007-03-12 Thread BillR
Yes, I hear about such things happening, but I'm not there at the time, and
usually constrained by personal ethics if I am. Dad talked for a couple of
years about a 300SL someone bought from some elderly $$$ folks in the Miami
area and was driving up the interstate near Ocala. The story [urban
legend?] was that the electronic fuel pump went out and stranded him, and
he sold it for a song and a ride to somewhere. Dad heard about it a bit too
late. "If wishes were horses "

i remember at our first big rustyQ, this dude comes to ask me about
his first generation rolex explorer. the hands have kinda rotted out
and he wants to know if it is "worth the money" to get new hands. he
was about floored when i mentioned the watch was worth thousands as is
and he ought not mess with anything without consulting an expert lest
he diminish the value of the watch.

in retrospect, i should have told him it wasn't worth the money but
i'd give him 100 bucks on the spot for it as my daddy wore one just
like it and i'm sentimental. lucky for him my dad really wore a
bottom of the line wittnauer.

Re: [MBZ] Slightly Wandering Posterior

2007-03-12 Thread Peter Frederick
The reason for changing the control arm complete is that replacing the
pivot bushings is a real pain and hard to get right (they are crimped
in), and it's far easier to just swap the control arm for a new one.
You get the new ball joint and new bushing in one shot. I'ts not much
more work to change it complete -- compress spring, unclamp balljoint
pivot, remove pivot bolts, put the new one in, replace bolts, release
spring. Easier than the ball joint, which can be a PITA.

Re: [MBZ] Slightly Wandering Posterior

2007-03-12 Thread Peter Frederick
1983 to probably 1990, the problem showed up about then (same links in
the W201 and W124). They were changed for the W210 chassis, and I
believe the new links have 210 xx part numbers.

They usually croak around 150,000 miles or so, causing torque steer,
thumps under the rear seat, and squeaks, along with erratic "rear
steer" and crosswind sensitivity.

Re: [MBZ] Slightly Wandering Posterior

2007-03-12 Thread John Peterson
I'm wondering if the wander isn't just the front ball joint I have out.
It has only recently started to really wander, and this has overlapped
the time the ball joint has been squeaking like the Michael Jackson song
(creaky door sound.)

Regarding the control arms, I got the control arm because my MB dealer
discouraged the changing of the ball joint alone. Maybe it is
overkill. I bought both sides with the (maybe flawed) logic that it
would be cost effective to change both at once. Roads are really bad
here in the winter and early spring until they fix 'em. I noticed a
huge degradation of the car since 3 years ago when I got it from
Florida. I know I have one ball joint out, I was able to isolate this
for sure, maybe I should shelve the other side control arm with ball
joint for later? Not knowing what the job entails I still don't know if
it makes sense to just swap them both out. I'm going to look at the
repair CD and take a look.

Anyone change both control arms at once? Have I been listening to too
many MB dealers?

Best investment I made in my ride was that damn $10 of Purge. Per
dollar investment pays off 100 fold in acceleration etc. Not so sure
about the $200 ea. control arms!

Early links are prone to failure. The bushing is vulcanized in place
and acts as a spring, so they cannot be replaced separately. The
rubber fails. Replacements are the new style and require a sleeve and
bolt kit, but replacement isn't bad and will greatly improve handling.

I have replaced most of them on both W124 chassis cars, and expect to
get the rear subframe mounts, which also go bad on the earlier cars,
soon.
