Thanks - good find.
Is it possible a similar chart exists that gives total production numbers by
model year? I have such a chart in a book but it's from 1984.

Re: [MBZ] Vacuum frustration -- solved

2009-07-05 Thread Rich Thomas

So I woke up dis mohnin wif da answer in my haid:

I took apart the vac pump yesterday, put everything back together
properly (though it was proper as it was). I noticed that I could see
the diaphragm screw through a little hole in the front part that holds
the check valves, right there in the middle. Did not make an impression
on my conscious awareness at that point. So during the night it struck
me that there should be no hole there, I guess my brain reprocessed the
process and came up with that little flash of insight.

I think what happened was that when I first checked it out a few weeks
back, that screw had backed out and the diaphragm was not really
moving. (The loc-tite didn't I guess). I tightened it back, still
didn't get vac, got all new parts and rebuilt it, still didn't get vac,
redid it again yesterday, checked the cam and rocker/roller, still
didn't get vac. The screw must have pounded that little hole out, nice
little round punch in that pot metal. It sucks and blows, back and forth.

So I guess off to the junkyard tomorrow or maybe some JBWeld, see if
that does the trick.

When you do that, take some brake parts cleaner and make absolutely
positive that the screw hole for the diaphragm screw is completely
free of oil. Even a tiny trace will prevent the LockTite from
adhering to the lever hole, and the screw will back out again.

I also have a Pressure Washer with a Honda engine. Lately it is very hard
to start and I blame a lot of that on Ethanol. I know for a fact it is hard
on the needle valve and seats as I have replaced them on my Toro lawn mower
twice since Ethanol became mandatory a couple of years ago.

So I need to pull the honda carb apart and clean everything good. Then
it'll probably start like new again. I should probably add Sta-Bil to the

tank or not. So perhaps it's my fault?

You might think so but no, the carby will have to be serviced as I have
just done on a Honda 5 hp motor coupled to a pressure washer which I
bought as part of a small earthmoving business.
Here I was thinking like you it's a Honda it will go first pull but no
it did not. 2 hours later after a carby clean out it does but I have to
remember to shut off the fuel as I suspect the float is wonky.

What are the symptoms of a worn or improperly working injection pump

Is there a way to test one while still in the car?

2009-07-05 Thread Christopher McCann

loping slightly at idle is almost certainly (esp. if at HOT idle, like after
coming off the highway) the rack damper bolt.

Hard start could be a bad glow plug or, more likely, the valves need to be
adjusted.

I would definitely check these things first.

Re: [MBZ] OT: I hate small engines

2009-07-05 Thread Peter Frederick
Another thing to watch is for deterioration (mostly hardening and
shrinking) of rubber parts. This can make small engines very hart to
start when the rubber hose between the carb and cylinder gets loose,
for instance -- this has been a problem on both my Techumse and
Briggs engines (mostly old ones).

Premium makes them hard to start was well, but they then don't knock
under load, so it's a matter of which is more of a problem for you.
My push mower gets pretty hard use up in the back lot around the
grapes since that's old pasture full of fescue and I don't get it
mowed often enough. With mid-grade or premium, the mower doesn't
knock, runs cooler, and uses less fuel (and oil, it's always used
more than I like), but it can be a pain to get running sometimes.

In 1978, at Sondrestrom (now Kangerlussuaq), Greenland, the Danish fuels
guys told me one day that we (the base) had a HUGE oversupply of 145 avgas
that would likely go bad long before it could be used in the normal manner
(in aircraft). I told 'em to start mixing a bit of it with fuel for our
gasoline-powered vehicle fleet. Even that still wouldn't make much of a
dent in it.

If you know a police officer personally he might have dipsticks to test for
ethanol. I would mix small quantities of gas and water, shake them up
thoroughly, let the mixture set and separate, suction off the gas with a
bulb, and test the water and another sample of gas with dipsticks since we
don't know if the dipstick will work in gasoline. That way you might be
able to test Amoco Premium and other premium gases for ethanol. I've used
Amoco premium for years and never had corrosion problems with my equipment
(generators, pressure washers, lawnmowers, weed wackers, etc.)
Amoco Premium was the best years ago because it didn't have lead. It's
antiknock properties were achieve by a more expensive process that reduced
it to nearly pure (octane?); or at least that was what was claimed.

Any graduated container works for that.
Mix one part water with one part 'gasoline' and shake well.
Wait for it to settle, and if there's alcohol in there, you'll see the line
between the 'water' and the 'gas' has gone up.

They make test cylinders that you fill to one line with water, fill to another
line with gas, and directly read the %age of alcohol after the shake and settle
routine. Here's an example:

WIPER PROBLEM SOLVED!
I read the Electric Troubleshooting Manual for Models 300D/CD/TD 1983 -
1985. It is pitched toward a novice tech with a 3rd grade reading
proficiency. In other words, I can just about understand it!

The manual informed me that the front AND rear wiper systems in the 300TD
are BOTH fused to no. 6 (red 16 amp). I was going to replace the broken
rear wiper motor (literally - it had split in half!) as well as the
nonfunctional REAR wiper relay anyway, so I was hoping maybe this was the
cause of my front wiper problem too. After I did the rear wiper and relay
R/R (not a difficult job), I tested the rear wipers. They worked without
blowing a fuse - YEAH!

Then I tested the front wipers, which have been inoperative since 6/2 while
I have been flailing around in utter futility searching for a nonexistent
relay, replacing a perfectly fine combination switch (three times) and
going through a six pack of red fuses. Turns out the broken rear wiper
motor was indeed shorting out the system and blowing the red no. 5 fuse
every time I turned on the front wipers. Now I have wipers both F R, and
can at least attempt to pass D.C. inspection with some semblance of hope.
 Double yeah!!

The catalog number for this SUPERB practical manual is S-1243-123. Its
subtitle should be an idiot's guide to really obvious electrical circuitry
in your 1983 - 1985 turbodiesel.

Thanks to all for your help.

I can think of three wiper relays a car might have:

The main one
One for a wagon's rear window
Headlight wipers.

I don't know which one you have there. I do know that on
a R107 the wiper relay is just above the gas pedal.

I also saw listed a 123 821 00 63 as some kind of wiper relay.

[MBZ] Ethanol WAS: I hate small engines

2009-07-05 Thread Loren Faeth
I think you folks are spreading BS about E10 gasoline. I have been
using it for 30+ years with no problems in vehicles and small
engines.Small engines in most cases don't have any fuel
screen. They just dump any dirt right into the carb, and that makes
them run bad. So lets blame the ethanol in the gasoline. How many
of you used to dump Heet into your tank? Whaddya think that is? It
ain't sugar syrup!

The GASOLINE available now is garbage compared to 30-40 years
ago. in every small engine, you need to either run the carb dry or
add Stabil if it is going to sit more than a week or 2. I run my
chainsaw out of gas before I store it. If I have to dump gas out of
it, I start it and let the saw run out of gas after emptying the
tank. Same for every small engine I have. My chainsaw is at least
20 years old, and I took it to the shop this spring because I twisted
the bar, so I had him sharpen the chain and clean out the tank and
carb while it was there. That was the FIRST time it has ever been worked on.

I had a 30 year old lawn boy that was never worked on. I finally
broke down and bought a new one because they wouldn't sell me a new
bag attachment for the old one. Even though the old one was 2 cycle,
it ALWAYS started, because I ran it out of gas each fall. Guess
what, the new one does not start as easily as the old one did.

Want a briggs? OK, I think they are POS, but I have a chipper with
a briggs. It is 12-14 years old. Same thing. Always starts, but I
have had to take the bowl off twice because of dirt. The dust from
chipping always seems to get into the tank, and then to the
carb. This spring I had to buy a new bowl gasket because the
original one came out in pieces. The guy at the dealer suggested
putting a small inline screen in the gas line. So simple, why didn't
I think of that? probly because when i was learning engines, the
only fuel screens to be found were the car type inline can filters,
and those are too big for lawnmowers. NOW they sell small filters.

SO go ahead, and believe ethanol messes up your carb. Pigs can fly
too. And Mercedes get 50 to 60 MPG, just look on fleabay.

Yes, my lawn mower ash been acting up too since ethanol. I spray a few shots
of carb cleaner in every tank of fuel.

There are genuine Briggs Stratton clear plastic filters with paper elements
for under $5 at the small engine shops, or you could just get one from FLAPS if
you can find one that fits the fuel line. A OM617 prefilter would be better than
nothing. (but unless you're getting a big chunk of dirt holding the float needle
open, I don't see how it would make your engine run rich, so I was working on
the assumption that your float was sinking)

He also is driving a TD which is heavier and dives a good deal more on
braking. I recommend swapping to the 1st gen SD setup, the vented rotors
will keep things cooler. Calipers and rotors are a direct bolt on. 2nd
gen will work fine as well but then you need 15 or larger wheels.

miles.

Re: [MBZ] Injection pump 1984 300D

2009-07-05 Thread Rolf Martin-Hoster

Cam timing and valve adjustment first, certainly.

Rack dampener bolt is a bandaid fix for a pump getting out of tune. Cost
around here is $200 to put it on th bench and tune.

loping slightly at idle is almost certainly (esp. if at HOT idle, like after coming off the highway) the rack damper bolt.

Hard start could be a bad glow plug or, more likely, the valves need to be
adjusted.

I would definitely check these things first.

What are the symptoms of a worn or
improperly working injection pump in a 1984 300D. My
car (260,000 miles)has been losing power over the last year,
is beginning to start hard and lopes slightly at idle.
I have replaced filters and have put in rebuilt injectors

(local bosch injector service)in recently.
Is there a way to test one while still in the car?

Thanks,
Mike

So I guess off to the junkyard tomorrow or maybe some JBWeld, see if
that does the trick.

Glue a piece of metal over the hole using JB Weld. Clean
fanatically, maybe scratch up the area with a knife point
or steel wool. A penny will do for metal, if you don't have
anything you like better.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Mac Leopard on PC?

2009-07-05 Thread Jim Cathey
Unix, however, as you will know if you've ever used it as a command
line implementation, is a main frame OS of the old style -- cryptic
commands, a hangover from when using whole words would eat up your
disk or memory space,

No. Try a 110 baud ASR-33 teletype for I/O. Slow, and noisy, and
a real beast to type on with long-throw buttons and absolutely
no key rollover. (If you attempt to type too fast it will jam
your fingers.) I spent time that way in the beginning, and
all the terseness of traditional Unix is absolutely
understandable (and forgivable) to me.
