Ned if you're still on this list, I'd like permission to also post this great tidbit on the MBCA forum and credit to your name. -Max -- Glad I took Marshall's advice and replicated the chain stretch measurement on my '95 E300D with the OM 606.910 engine. My first measurement on Saturday was 4 deg. The subsequent measurements, today, were 3 deg, 2 deg and 2.5 deg. Think I'll keep this chain and check it again in 30 or 50k miles. I discovered an important trick that other 606 engine owners may want to know - The cam can be indexed for #1 piston TDC by running a pin through holes that align the left cam gear and the front cam tower. One of the bolts that holds the cam cover on the head is the perfect size to use as this pin. This bolt will fit tightly enough that I estimate the bolt will only fit through both holes within 1/2 deg of crank rotation. When looking at the engine from the front of the car, correct crank rotation is clockwise. To measure chain stretch, you must approach the index postion only from the clockwise direction. Backing the crank off a fraction of a degee reverses the play in the chain and makes the measurement meaningless. I cannot for the life of me find any marks on the camshaft at the #1 bearing tower. I've made this check on OM617 and OM603 engines, so I know what I'm looking for, but this OM606 has got me stumped. Anyone know the trick? There is a set of marks on the third cam bearing tower and the primary camshaft (two camshafts on this engine, remember), but they are not easily aligned for a precise measurement. When I line them up, it looks like timing chain wear is about 4 degrees. There's also a hole in the gear on the second camshaft, and that hole can be aligned with a hole in the #1 cam bearing tower. When I line that up, I measure about 10 degrees of wear! Larry, 274k miles, only have maintenance record in booklet completed up to about 175k miles, almost all dino oil (Shell) but some Mobil 1 as well. Once I get this project running, and the memory of the expenses thus far fade a little, I'll probably install a new timing chain. This bolt will fit tightly enough that I estimate the bolt will only fit through both holes within 1/2 deg of crank rotation. Same mounts, etc, same hassles. The W124 is completely different -- multilink suspension (and you probably need to replace them all) plus four subframe mounts, two front and two rear (not the same). It can be done by jacking up the rear and dropping one side at a time, then using a puller/pusher to remove and install the mounts. Diff is held on by two steel and rubber inserts in the subframe at the rear and a pair of rubber mounts between plates up front. Rear mounts must be removed to the front (they are tapered and won't come out the back) and they are always very stuck. Best course is to use an air chisel to collapse the steel ring to get them out, then pull the new ones in. You can hang the diff on a jack while you are doing this and leave the axles installed. This is a job I was going to tackle on the old 300D when it got smashed, and will be doing next month on the new one (and an evaporator transplant, oh joy!) How long are you planning to spend in Vegas again, H F? There's a lot to do there that's interesting and educational for kids other than the casinos (where children, by law, aren't allowed anywhere near the gaming tables and machines---but I suppose since gambling is legal in Oz you won't be much interested anyway in showing the young-uns how quickly mum and dad can lose all their funny American money). There is a great natural history museum just outside of town with lots of dinosaur bones. The Hoover Dam is an easy day trip and not only educational but just an impressive sight to behold---I think it's the largest single piece of poured concrete in the world. There is an excellent car museum hidden inside the Imperial Palace casino. Just walking on the Strip can be a lot of fun---you can marvel at the bizarre architecture of the casinos, people-watch, and go inside for a drink when it gets too hot. Re: [MBZ] MB repair, maintenance manual
I'd highly recommend the technical data book from MB if it covers the years of your cars; it will have most of the critical info like torque and other specifications. The next thing to get is the parts book for your car, which is all the exploded parts diagrams (what the EPC has, but no part numbers/footnotes). After that, the manuals in paper version would be ideal, but the MB service manual on CD (with Steve Nervig's index) is good enough for me. Idler arm and steering stabilizer will be very straightforward. Lower control arm, on the other hand, is a whole different animal. I did front lower control arms on an '85 123 wagon which had rust; a 'sawz-all' was required to get the rusted inner bushing bits out. A special tool is required to press the new inner bushing parts together and expand the inner sleeve to put a bead that holds the bushing parts together so you can install in the car. I made do without the special tool, and probably spent a few hours wrestling with the bushings to get all aligned and in place. Next time, I'd pay a mechanic who has the correct tools to do the lower control arm. A spring compressor is needed, lower ball joint press is needed, and special tool for the bushing is needed. You can make do / fabricate as required to over come all of those, but in the end you need to decide how much your time and your safety / limb / life is worth. -Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of P. Re: [MBZ] Hendrik and Co coming to the US of A in June
I was thinking of the crossing at Corvalis and doing 20. Not that Hendrik is planning on using a day just to traverse Oregon. I do like 101 along the coast and doing 16 to PDX. Portland is more out of the way than they needed, and from the posts, seems they have it pretty nailed down. clay On Feb 21, 2010, at 8:36 PM, Alex Chamberlain wrote: On Sun, Feb 21, 2010 at 8:08 PM, Redghost redgh...@comcast.net wrote: Doing Oregon is a hard way, though better four corner. There are ways over the Cascades that are less unpleasant than the Siskiyou Summit, e.g. U.s. 199 from Eureka. Or if you're coming up I-5 from the general direction of SF or LA, you can take US 97 at Weed, which goes NE up towards Bend---then take US 20 pretty much due east until you meet up with 84 at Boise. To get from SF to Portland by the scenic route (US 101 the whole way) is only about a 16 hour drive and avoids the Cascades entirely (and the Coast Range too, if you take state highway 6 from Tillamook to Portland). Then you have the incredibly scenic but also very fast (the best of both worlds!) drive east from Portland along the Columbia on I-84 to get wherever. Who could forget South of the Border. Hendrik, if you've got the extra time South of the Border on the line between South Carolina and North Carolina is a bit of Americana not to be missed! Now that fireworks are somewhat legal in NC SOTB is not what it was. Last time we drove down 95 (Christmas?) there were only two or three wimpy signs, and it looked like most of the shops etc. were closed. We did not stop either, since even when it was buzzing it seemed to me to be an unpleasant little place and I wasn't interested in giving them extra operational capital. But to each his own. Certainly an oddball institution when it was running. If Hendrick really wants some SC tobacco he'd be better served, I think, to have someone load up a few Priority flat rate boxes with his shopping list and budget and have them mailed to the hotel. The whole idea of taking an extended trip east of Chicago doesn't strike me as reasonable, if it were me I'd either stay in NYC the extra days or maybe visit Boston or Philadelphia if US history is interesting. The south has its own curiosities, but they take some time to appreciate. :) Best, -Tim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: OT Water softener
There are 2 well holes right next to the house, I took off the pump and will keep them from getting destroyed. I think there is another well away from the house, might have to see if that has water in it. The PO said it had a lot of iron in it, and the water table had dropped quite a bit, so they ran city water. With all this rain I bet the water table is back up now. The pump looks kinda beat, haven't tried to power it up but I will. --R On 2/22/2010 2:53 PM, Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310 wrote: Is there a well pump that can produce potable water? It was full of water, looked quite clean having been sitting there for who knows how long. The trash can thing had a water line to it but it couldn't be pressurized as it is just a big open thing. The scuba tank thing had some kind of timer controller on it and solenoid-operated water valves. Anyway, I am getting rid of it and just scavenging some stuff (like the scuba tank and controller and big trash can, which will become abig trash can!). Re: [MBZ] Hendrik and Co coming to the US of A in June A BIG THANK YOU
Not sure how long we will stay in Vegas, that will be towards the end of our trip. Have done a little bit of research, mainly for kid stuff. Hard Rock Hotel seems to be worth checking out for music memorabilia. Accommodation seems to be pretty cheap. Thanks for all your suggestions, it you have any more ideas we'd greatly appreciate them. Alex Chamberlain wrote: How long are you planning to spend in Vegas again, H F? Re: [MBZ] Hendrik and Co coming to the US of A in June A BIG THANK YOU
If you get to Okie Acres (the Claremore gun museum is amazing!), a little West (90 miles) in OKC you can see the 45th infanty museum - IIRC, they do have a bazooka or two (I'll ask my son - he'd remember) as well as the original Willie and Joe drawings. 20 miles South of OKC is the Oklahoma Natural History Museum with the worlds largest dinasaur skeleton on display. Sadly, I fly American all the time. Previous comments on personnel are right on, and this has been true for at least 35 years, but they do get you there, and I've never had any trouble with them or another airline re-scheduling flights due to bad weather or plane problems. Lost my luggage once last Xmas (forgivable -- it was 5F in Chicago with a 40 mph wind blowing, it was below freezing in the terminal, the ground crews were getting literally frozen to the ground and frosbite, and the plane wouldn't start if they were tail to the wind.). The people at Delta are nicer, but AA surly desk people can usually be niced pretty well, so I have no real complaint. To balance that, they were great when we lost Mom's wallet in Cleveland the other year, leaving her with no ID and ticket, and in a wheelchair. Re: [MBZ] 124, 126 rear subframe
Are we talking W124 or W126 here? On the W124, you use a piece of pipe and the bolt (with a nut and washer and plate) to pull the mount out of the subframe. Once goes in the top, one goes in the bottom. Ditto going back in. On the W126/W123/W115, the mount comes out the bottom, they usually fall out, not a problem. Your story just gave me a good laugh. Hendrik I aren't the gambling types we figured the laws would be the same as here - no kids in casinos. You have to be 18 over here to go into casinos/pubs. Our son Zak is the one who wants to go to Vegas - he's only 9 In his words 'I wanna see how they built a million dollar city in the middle of the desert'. One of friends went to Vegas a few years ago he just loved it, he had the best time. Will definitely look at staying at the Hard Rock - I'll go on the website. Hendrik would like to know if you can take kids into bars in the US, the best beer for drinking for me it's good brands of scotch. In reality I had a run of bad luck which is probably not so bad considering I fly probably a dozen times a year, most of the time with no issue. -Curt Date: Tue, 23 Feb 2010 10:27:38 +1030 From: Hendrik Fay heni...@ozemail.com.au To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] Hendrik and Co coming to the US of A in June Message-ID: 4b8319f2.3090...@ozemail.com.au Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Thanks for that info. We drove thru Yellowstone the first weekend in May - cold, beautiful, snow. Yellowstone is a disaster ready to happen - the cauldron of a huge volcano ready to blow - whenever. Awesome scenery and stuff to see, however. I could recommend 20 all the way to Chicago, if you need a recommendation. Plenty of good scenery and country to see. The interstate travel is merely a trip against time, whereas the US routes allow you to really capture much of the country for what it is, rather than only the big cities and traffic and speed. As much as possible, if the Hendrick family is going to drive long distances - do it via US routes as they are wonderful view of US. mao ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Do some of that, Hendrick, and you will have memories to speak for a long time. Eastern Oregon is wonderful country. And, I agree that the drive along the Columbia river on I84 is very pretty - but all man made stuff in there, what with highway and large wide river because the river has a dam, and the orchards on the north side across the river. mao ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
