[MBZ] Garage Door Tutorial

2011-04-26 Thread Jerry Herrman
Thanks, Barry. What you made available was exactly what I was looking for. I
plan to sit down and review that material in the next couple of days. To answer
Max and Philip's questions, I have a double wide (two car) overhead garage door
with Holmes jamb type door hardware, two springs on each side, and a Craftsman
chain driven opener. As opposed to the newer rollup type door. I want to
understand how this hardware works, and how to adjust and service it, in case I
ever need to adjust or repair it. My interest in this was prompted by a problem
I have with the chain drive opener. The chain has jumped the cog wheel on the
opener motor. I need to now find out how to get it back on the cogwheel. I see
no way to shorten the distance between the motor and the other end without
taking it all apart. I am not sure if I should just try to pry it back on the
wheel. Any suggestions would be appreciated. My problem is exacerbated by lack
of easy access, as I have intalled shelving around and near the motor to hold
all the things I've collected over the years for auto ( I have five) and home
repair.

Two business days later the significant line was waiting when I got home. I
pushed it through and plugged it up, got a not-as-shaky but still noisy
engine. Popped hood, realized I forgot to tighten half the connections
(duh!), wrenched it down, engine settled to happy roar. Easy enough but
nonetheless satisfying to hear it go from thump thump thump to clatta clatta
clatta, wish I'd recorded it for future episodes of discouragement. :)

Thanks all for the accurate and quick diagnosis!

PS sort of: my ghetto fix with the o-ring lasted about ten minutes, maybe
less. I hitched a ride with SWMBO to work this morning rather than run it
again, so I was really happy to see that box on the porch!

A couple of years ago, a rancher came to me asking how she could control

Weird, I said, that the snakes and coyotes aren't doing the job for you.

Coyotes? She replied. Hell, we shot all of them.

Mother Nature is the original gardener, and she's been at it for a

Fight her and, after a long and costly conflict, you will lose.

Predator piss will tend to keep the wee beasties away. You can buy fox

Thank you Kaleb. He's in a real pickle. All of this is happening during a MOVE

Will keep everyone posted. I just hope that it is the pump or the valve, and
not the main bearings or something. But i guess there's no real way to know
that without an overhaul.

 1) They only charged him ONE hour labour (this, I think, is VERY generous of
them and commendable), plus $47 for an oil change (changed to thicker oil in
hopes it would improve a bit - it didn't)

 2) They believe that he may need either the pressure limit valve or the oil
pump, and suggest both for good measure. Neither is in stock and will arrive
Wednesday at the earliest. They are saying 1.5 hours labour to remove the
pan, replace the pump and valve, and put it all back. That seems VERY
 reasonable to me.

The techs said the engine ran great, no signs of rod knock or bearing
problems. Lots of power, no smoke, etc. And my friend noted that it burned
only maybe a pint of oil in the 1600 high-speed miles they have driven.
That is great for a 617.

His problem is that he needs to be in Montreal by Friday at the latest. He
is travelling with a friend/co-worker who is muling a BMW back as well, so
they could leave the MB and come back for it later (like, in a month or so),
but I doubt the dealer would entertain parking it for that long.

Do any listers near OK City have a parking spot for a nice tidy W115 for a
 few weeks?

Also, rather than a new $500 oil pump, he was wondering if anyone near OKC
has a used oil pump for a 617.910 that they don't need??

My mom also uses this concoction of Tabasco, egg, black pepper,
vinegar, and water to deter the cotonbottoms from getting into the
non-fenced section of the garden with the taters and squash. I think
it was 2 eggs, half a cup of Tabasco, quarter cup black pepper, a few
cups of vinegar, and mix with water in a gallon jug. Seems to have

It will also quiet down more and run smoother after you have proper

carbon up badly when the injectors don't fire properly. This will

Amazingly simple, at least I thought it was. Wish I had done this a long time

Not that it matters, but these were gray squirrels. The ones in Florida are

The widest tornado on record is Hallam, NE. See
http://wmo.asu.edu/#tornado.

Wikipedia seems to think the 1999 OK tornado was bigger...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tornado_records

The widest tornado (defined as damage path, not condensation/debris
cloud or radar measurements) on record is the Wilber
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilber,_Nebraska - Hallam, Nebraska
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallam,_Nebraska tornado during the

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_2004_tornado_outbreak_sequence of May
22, 2004, with a width of 2.5 miles (4 km) at its peak.^[14]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tornado_records#cite_note-13

The widest tornado as measured by actual radar wind measurements was the
Mulhall http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulhall,_Oklahoma (1999) tornado
in northern Oklahoma which occurred during the 1999 Oklahoma tornado
outbreak http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_Oklahoma_tornado_outbreak.
The diameter of the maximum winds
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radius_of_maximum_wind (over 110 metres
per second (250 mph)) was over 1600 m as measured by a DOW radar.
Although the tornado passed largely over rural terrain, the width of the
wind swath capable of producing damage was as wide as 4 miles (7 km),
making the actual wind field of the Mulhall tornado likely twice as wide
as that of the Hallam tornado (the wind field of which was not
measured), even though the Hallam tornado resulted in a wider damage
path.^[15]

First everyone in the building went into the johns, then after 15-20

went into the station store, and they huddled in back while everyone

[MBZ] OT Tubernets questions

2011-04-26 Thread Rich Thomas
My DSL connection has been quite funky lately, random bursts of not
getting internet, though the light on the DSL modem shows a DSL lock,
then it will blink, then sometimes reconnect, sometimes not. If I
restart the modem I might get a lock, might not. This seems to happen
now and again, then go for awhile with no troubles at all, then wham, it
happens again. Recently it has been funky for a week or more. I looked
at the modem log just now and it shows a problem connecting with an ATT
(Bellsouth) DNS server in Atlanta (I whoised through google the IP
address it was having trouble connecting too == lo it seems to have had
problems before).

Solast week I spent like an hour on the phone with some Indian dude who
kept telling me he understood how frustrated I was, and apologizing for
every issue and such. He said he ran a bunch of tests and my connection
was fine, etc. even though it was up and down the whole time we were
talking. He finally reached the end of his script and suggested my
modem was flaky (which I suppose it could be) and the firmware was
failing or something. Well maybe. But that doesn't really explain the
up/down, goes fine for quite awhile, etc. issue.

This DNS thing in the modem suggests to me that the servers somewhere
are having issues, which is an ISP problem. Calling the help line is
not going to result in any of them having any clue as to what to do, so
the issue comes back to how do I resolve this

We are pretty close to a remote switch or substation or something, maybe
like a half mile or so up the road. I ran a new connection to the
network interface and straight to my modem, so that cnxn is probably
good. Whether the net interface and line to it is good is a question,
but the intermittent problem does not suggest a line fault.

Any ideas how to deal with ATT to get them to fix this problem? Or is
it a box problem?

Seems to be failing to reach a DNS server. It is most likely the one
set by your ISP. That is an ISP problem, unless your ISP allows you
to manually set up the DNS server the modem goes to. (doubtful)

As for getting ATT to fix a server, good luck with that. One time I
was able to find a phone number for ATT network support and called
it. The guy who answered tried pinging the server in question, and
determined that I was right, then told me that since I was not the
ATT customer, Mediacommies were the customer, he could not take a
repair request from me. I told him he could pretend he discovered
it. As long as they got the server up, I didn't care who did or did
not report it. It got fixed.

These are the servers it is looking for.

0:00:33 Elapsed Time pppd[230]: primary DNS address 205.152.128.23

0:00:33 Elapsed Time pppd[230]: secondary DNS address 205.152.37.23

IMH experience, it is almost always the ISP and ATT that have the
problems, and mostly ATT.

I use tracert from the winders cmd console to determine where the
routing is encountering a problem.

Yeah, I just saw a bunch of bounces from places I use this address for.

Looks like someone is using it to spam people.

Great.

On an unrelated note, just took the first of two A+ exams this morning. Got an
810 out of 900. Thursday is the second half.

Amazingly simple, at least I thought it was. Wish I had done this a long time
ago.

In July I take the Security+ exam. No doubt more difficult, bit far more
valuable from a career standpoint...

Re: [MBZ] Got spam?

2011-04-26 Thread LWB250
Yeah, I have had no formal training for A+, but I figured I could probably pass
it.

I recently started a Security+ class with the expectation that it would add
some value to my resume. It was an extension of a curriculum that was after
the A+ training - the first two nights of my Security+ class were spent doing
test review for A+, since the guys in my class had just finished the A+ content
and were getting ready to test.

When I saw how easy the content was on the practice tests, I figured I could
easily pass it.

Today's test was the 701 section on general knowledge - I got an 810 out of
900. Thursday's is practical stuff, but that shouldn't be too bad compared to
today's test.

Sad thing is, only 1 of 3 of my classmates have passed the A+ test so far. I'm
going to put a real damper on things when I go back next week (we're on spring
break this week) and they find out how I did

I really want to take the Server+ class, but I'm having a difficult time
finding it offered around here. The school district does Adult Ed. classes
(which is where I'm taking my Security+ class) but if there is no demand, they
don't do it. Network+ would be nice, too.

Re: [MBZ] OT Tubernets questions

2011-04-26 Thread dave walton
Its worth trying a different modem. The Motorola 2210's are dirt cheap
on eBay. I've had no problem using ones from different areas (Bell
South modems work in SBC Northeast region). If your link fails,
chances are you will notice it on the next new request which will be
preceded by a dns lookup - so it may not be a DNS issue even though
you get a DNS error.

Try 8.8.8.8 . It has been rock solid for me.

My DSL connection has been quite funky lately, random bursts of not getting

might get a lock, might not.  This seems to happen now and again, then go
for awhile with no troubles at all, then wham, it happens again.  Recently
it has been funky for a week or more.  I looked at the modem log just now
and it shows a problem connecting with an ATT (Bellsouth) DNS server in
Atlanta (I whoised through google the IP address it was having trouble
connecting too == lo it seems to have had problems before).

Solast week I spent like an hour on the phone with some Indian dude who kept
telling me he understood how frustrated I was, and apologizing for every
issue and such.  He said he ran a bunch of tests and my connection was fine,
etc. even though it was up and down the whole time we were talking.  He
finally reached the end of his script and suggested my modem was flaky
(which I suppose it could be) and the firmware was failing or something.
Well maybe.  But that doesn't really explain the up/down, goes fine for
 quite awhile, etc. issue.

This DNS thing in the modem suggests to me that the servers somewhere are
having issues, which is an ISP problem.  Calling the help line is not going
to result in any of them having any clue as to what to do, so the issue
comes back to how do I resolve this

We are pretty close to a remote switch or substation or something, maybe
like a half mile or so up the road.  I ran a new connection to the network
interface and straight to my modem, so that cnxn is probably good.  Whether
the net interface and line to it is good is a question, but the intermittent
problem does not suggest a line fault.

Any ideas how to deal with ATT to get them to fix this problem?  Or is it a
 box problem?

 --R

Here is the log, it just disconnected and restarted the connection again.
See where I have marked * to show where it disconnected and seemed
to be having trouble connecting to a DNS address.  I'm wondering if the
AppleTV box is doing something bad?

A good subsonic air rife is even quieter and can have similar range.

In fairness to the others in the class, none of them have much, if any, prior
computer experience. That, and the semester of measurements I had in college
goes a long way when it comes to test taking. It's all strategy, and even if
you don't know the answer, if you know how the questions are constructed you
probably raise your chances of getting it right to well over 75% or more.

There were a total of six people in the class besides me, and only four of them
have tested so far. A couple of them are just kids out of high school, so they
are unfamiliar with a certification test environment, too. One who took it and
failed was openly spooked by the process, having their pockets cleaned out,
being in a room with windows where people are constantly watching you, etc. It
is an intimidating process if you've never done it before.

[MBZ] Things I learned today

2011-04-26 Thread Jaime Kopchinski
On the 450SLC 5.0:
1. The nut at the top of the engine mounting arm is welded to the arm...
don't try to turn it.
2. The bolt for the mount is accessible from below, through a really deep
hole in the subframe. Deeper than the longest 10mm hex key socket I have.
Makes me wonder if other 107s have this hole... i thought they had motor
mounts that bolt from the top.

I have new hex key sockets on order from mcmaster carr... lets try again
tomorrow! Hopefully they'll come through with same-day delivery.

[MBZ] OT: THE LAST NICKEL

2011-04-26 Thread Gerry Archer

A father walks into a restaurant with his young son...
He gives the young boy 3 nickels to play with to keep him occupied.

Suddenly, the boy starts choking, going blue in the face...
The father realizes the boy has swallowed the nickels and starts
slapping him on the back..

The boy coughs up 2 of the nickels, but keeps choking. Looking at his
son, the father is panicking, shouting for help.

A well-dressed, attractive, and serious looking woman in a blue
business suit is sitting at the coffee bar reading a newspaper and
sipping a cup of coffee. At the sound of the commotion, she looks up,
puts her coffee cup down, neatly folds the newspaper and places it on
the counter, gets up from her seat and makes her way, unhurried,
across the restaurant.

Reaching the boy, the woman carefully drops his pants; takes hold of
the boy's' testicles and starts to squeeze and twist, gently at first
and then ever so firmly...After a few seconds the boy convulses
violently and coughs up the last nickel, which the woman deftly
catches in her free hand.

Releasing the boy's testicles, the woman hands the nickel to the
father and walks back to her seat at the coffee bar without saying a
word..

As soon as he is sure that his son has suffered no ill effects, the
father rushes over to the woman and starts thanking her saying, I've
never seen anybody do anything like that before, it was fantastic.
Are you a doctor?

No the woman replied. I'm with the I.R.S.

they try to go to the ATT servers that appear to be problematic? Which

something else in the modem preventing that automatic access?

Re: [MBZ] OT Tubernets questions

2011-04-26 Thread Allan Streib
You have a DSL modem, and a wireless router, correct? Typically the wireless
router is handing out IP addresses to your devices using DHCP; it also
tells the devices what the DNS is so you set this up in your router.
You probably get to the router admin settings by going to

http://192.168.1.1

and logging in as admin or root, then look around for the DNS
settings.

You may need to consult your router instructions or do some googling on
the specific model.

If you have DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol) enabled, yes, the
modem will assign local addresses for all of your machines as well as DNS
addresses.

Try setting specific Domain Name Service (DNS) addresses on one machine
and see if that solves the problem. Note, you may have to assign the
machine a specific local Internet Protocol (IP) address, too. You can do
that by looking at the address it's assigned by the modem, and then using
an address that has the same first three numbers the same and the fourth
about 20 higher. I would expect local address of the form of one of the
following:

10.0.0.x
172.16.0.x
192.168.0.x

with maybe the last zero a one.

p.s. I hurt my right hand at work today and it's difficult typing with
only my left.
