[MBZ] OT - window/wall heat pumps
We are considering options for heating/cooling at least part of our 700 sq. ft. guest house. It's now heated by an open flame propane heater, and cooled by a small window unit A/C. The current units are in/on the west side, the living/dining area. They don't do a good job of heating/cooling the bed room on the east side, so are thinking of a one piece window/wall unit in the bedroom. We'll be replacing a 72sliding patio door with a 72 X 48 window, with this proposed unit under it. Anyone has experience/recommendations with these? The use will be occasional, a week or so at a time, or longer when the son comes back from Africa and is job hunting. -- OK Don 2013 F150, 19 mpg 2012 Passat TDI DSG, 45 mpg 1957 C182A, 12 mpg - but at 150 mph! ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

If I set it for 68° on a warm day, it keeps most of the house around 76° or so, which is comfortable enough in low humidity (and it's great at dehumidifying the house). Re: [MBZ] OT - window/wall heat pumps
I agree with Mitch. I put in a 4-unit mini-split heat pump/AC system in my addition, my HVAC guy is supposed to be coming sometime this week to get the lines connected and leak tested, and when I get the new power line run I can power it up. Mine is a 36k BTU outdoor unit with 2-9k and 2-12k head units, my addition is about 800 ft2 with a large loft and very high ceiling. I have one unit in the bathroom (9k), one in the bedroom (9k), one in the kitchen (12k), and one in the loft (12k). The kitchen is open to the loft, I have ceiling fans in every space too so should be able to keep things comfy. I ran a calculation on the new addition (required to get my permits) that came up with an 18k load on the hottest/coldest day around here (the addition is structural insulated panels and good windows/doors) so the system should be able to handle the load very well. The outdoor unit throttles way down to handle demands from the indoor units, whichever is running and calling for heat or cool. That is probably more than you would need for your back house. The units are very easy to install, cut a hole in the wall for your lines or run your lines in an existing wall from above or below, get power to the outdoor unit, hook everything up, and your in bidness. My whole deal was like $5k with the refrigerant lines and units and wire, maybe a bit less, certainly less than a regular type of system with ducts or whatever. Those things are very popular in Europe and elsewhere, where retrofitting old buildings and energy efficiency is a big deal. From what I read about these things, people see immediate drops in their electric bill by huge amounts, payback can be fairly quick, even faster if you do it yourself (or most of it -- warranty requires a licensed HVAC guy to do the charging and initial start-up but that is not a lot). All that said, with just one room you are looking to condition, there are some window units that heat and cool for pretty cheap, and those motel type through-wall things, though noisy, are fairly cheap too (I see them on Craigslist occasionally). The mini-splits are very quiet, and I think there might even be some sorta one-piece kind of units with the outdoor part mounted on the wall right behind the indoor unit, with a small hole for the refrigerant line. Kind of a hybrid between the true mini-split and a motel thing, but a lot quieter as the compressor is all separate and outside. --R On 6/30/13 12:06 PM, Mitch Haley wrote: OK Don wrote: We are considering options for heating/cooling at least part of our 700 sq. ft. guest house. Re: [MBZ] OT - window/wall heat pumps
Cooled air is heavy, so AC unit should be mounted as high as possible. High discharge of cold air will disperse across the area and displace warm air as it falls to the floor. The warm air will be vented by the return air for the AC unit. Your system effective cooling will be more satisfactory. The creature comfort factor will increase. Suggest you consider this. Cooled air is heavy, so AC unit should be mounted as high as possible. But if it also heats then the opposite is true. I suggest a ceiling fan, which will take care of wrong-sex air. A low-mount wall pump would be more aesthetic, heat would be good as-is, and a ceiling fan, even on its own, is excellent in cooling season. Start with it, and add AC once it's getting uncomfortable. I'm extremely fond of the Hunter Original fan. Oil-bath bearings, cast-iron frame. Extremely quiet, durable, and strong. We have two. The other three in the house (bedrooms, kitchen) are Hunter also, but the sealed ball-bearing kind. Also quiet. They probably get 10% of the use of the main living area fans. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] W124 AC Problem -- '91 300D 2.5T
Thanks to all for answers to my windshield condensation question. ___ Now for another, more serious situation - the A/C in my '91 300D is not holding a charge very long. I had it filled last year and it lasted all season but this year it needed another refill but it failed to last more than a month or so - it's still cool but not cold. As I understand it, the W124 has a history of leaking in the condenser (if that's what's under the dash) ;-) so it sounds like the dash must come out. I could do the dash RR but the condenser RR would probably be beyond my ability. It looks like there are lotsof things that can leak behind the dash - the evaporatoror the Heat Exchanger and their related tubing for instance. Looks like the whole dash might need to come out At least my windshield condensation problem will be solved! ;-) Has anyone tried the *Stop Leak* in a can? Was it successful? Has anyone had a shop do this work? Any idea what the cost was? I'm in the greater Richmond Va area and labor prices are not too bad so far. Larry, The W140 chassis cars were also plagued with the dreaded evaporator leaks as well. I believe that Tarek, the former owner of my S500, had leak sealer used by his mechanic to seal up the system on the S500. I know Tarek is around but not sure if he can shed any light on this. Suffice to say it can be done as long as the leak isn't substantial. I know people have posted things n the list in the past on various methods and products - you might want to search the archives. I like to have some margin. Plus the way these things are set up for 4 head units you can get a smaller outdoor unit. And the space is such that I think having the 2 big units for the loft (which is open to the kitchen below) and the kitchen, where I am going to put a big cooktop in, ovens and such, will be able to keep it cool when things are cranking. --R On 6/30/13 1:14 PM, Mitch Haley wrote: Rich Thomas wrote: I ran a calculation on the new addition (required to get my permits) that came up with an 18k load on the hottest/coldest day If your manual J calc (a conservative calculation) came up with 18k, why did you install 36k? Re: [MBZ] W124 AC Problem -- '91 300D 2.5T
There are lots of things that can leak on that system besides the evaporator (which is the part inside the dash). Have some do a proper leak check with dye and see what they find. Changing the evaporator is a 16 hour job by the service book, and it took me longer the first time. If you find dye in the condensate drain when checking for leaks, the evaporator is leaking. Everything else is in the engine compartment. While i have two bad evaporators, the other things I've replace over the years on these cars are: compressor manifold seal o-rings (twice). front compressor seal (twice) o-rings in the lines many times high pressure line between condenser and receiver/dryer (two so far, probably a third on soon) Condenser on the TE pipe manifold to compressor o-rings (twice). The later evaporators with aluminum tubing and aluminum coils are not a problem, but the original ones with copper piping fail with monotonous regularity, differential expansion does in the crimped connections between piping and coils every time. [MBZ] Break roters
Did we decide that the paint on the new discs gets to stay on or should come off? The 42-0220 instructions say, Replacement brake discs are protected against corrosion with nitro-cellulose paint. For this reason the corrosion protection on these discs must be removed and the discs degreased before installation. This can be accomplished best with a high-pressure hot water cleaning unit. Since my high-pressure hot water cleaning unit is out of service at present, I tried some acetone, which did nothing. I did not try hot water but I am thinking that is not going to take the stuff off. The link henifay posted suggests to leave it on, which I have done so far. BTW the instructions in the box with the rotor is written in Germglish, at least the box says the part was made in Germany but the instructions read like Chinglish. I did mine yesterday morning and went right out and bedded the pads (sure the locals liked me doing 60 mph down our streets.) Stuff came right off with no indication that it gummed up the pads. For that matter, bits of it came off just from handling the rotors during installation. It wasn't very thick. If you pull the car apart, make sure to replace the AC pods, they fail and some you have to pull the dash to replace. How old is that MB advice? New rotors should come with instructions, follow them, not a 20 year old instruction. I bet there's no 124 out there that doesn't have at least one leaky pod, except Wilton's and some of Dave Meimann's cars. Larry's symptoms of excessive cold air through the windshield vents whenever the A/C is on indicate a bad defrost pod, which IIRC is one of the ones you can get at without removing the dash (it's behind the glove compartment). Small consolation if his evaporator turns out to be leaking, of course. Half the pods in my '87 are bad (and capped off at the manifold to keep from leaking vacuum); luckily it will still perform the essential functions of blowing cold through the middle vents in summer and warm out the floor vents in the winter, and the evap hasn't blown yet (knock on Zebrano). Re: [MBZ] Anyone on the list with Outlook Email
Don't know if files will work the same, but I put pictures in Picasa and click the email button. The email form comes up and the jpg line is on the bottom of the header. Then I paste the note over from OE or simply type it on the bottom of the Picasa email. Picasa is available from Google. Go to Google and click more. Then click even more, and then click Picasa. Gerry From: G. M. Brown g_010...@hotmail.com Is there anyone on the list with MS Outlook Email who is having the same problem I'm having attaching files to Email notes? This was not a problem in Hotmail. It seems to work periodically but not consistently and there appear to be numerous complaints on the I-net about this and MS doesn't seem to be doing anything to remedy the situation. If someone has figured out a way to resolve this issue, please holler. TIA. G. M. Re: [MBZ] Black smoke and loping at idle.
If the ALDA was not shimmed properly I suppose there could be too much fuel? But timing would also be suspect. On Saturday, June 29, 2013, OK Don wrote: Since this problem started with the installation of another IP, and persists with a second IP, I would be very suspicious of the installer - doing the same thing twice and expecting a different result! Now, it is possible that you have two defective IPs, I've had that with alternators from FLAPS, but used Bosch IPs don't usually give that kind of trouble. I like the suggestion of checking the timing with the drip tube! THe ALDA, injectors, etc. did not go bad just when you changed the IP. It about has to be IP timing. I changed out the injectors last night and it made no difference at all. I did adjust the alda all the way closed and the car would not idle or achieve and rpm 2500 and was not drivable. When I moved it back out (ccw) it would run and it returned to the normal terrible running status we have been battling since the new used injection pump was in installed. I was then called to dinner. I plan on changing out the alda with one that is unmolested (thanks Mitch) on Sunday. Is there a good write up on how to check to see where I stand on this issue. I have never adjusted the timing and do not intend to try to change it. I plan on taking it back into the mechanic on Monday and trying a few adjustments.
