2013-09-15 Thread Gary Hurst
i really have no set business hours, gerry, beyond usually being around
from around 10 to 6ish on weekdays as i can talk to suppliers and ship
then. i haven't responded to your email as i have no one to talk to about
removeable diode assembly. i'm presuming you don't mean the voltage
regulator in which case i'm wondering where one would even get such item.
i couldn't figure that out till monday as i'd have to see if it can be
special ordered from bosch but it's a request i've never seen before as
most people don't rebuild their own alternator, but at most will just
replace a bad voltage regulator and otherwise just the whole unit

an aftermarket hueco glow relay is 105 bucks based on the pricing scheme i
have for you guys. they seem adequate and tend to be made in germany (i
can't actually check that until monday) but they aren't the read deal ones
mercedes uses, which are hella and $179

the vacuum actuator is probably going to be genuine and $35 as i haven't
seen any oem or decent aftermarket ones around in a while, but maybe i can
find one monday

air cleaner mounts that are not APA/URO about 2 to 2.50 each. instrument
cluster bulbs are under a buck each.

Re: [MBZ] Prices on parts

2013-09-15 Thread Gerry Archer

Not knowing the official name and too lazy to look it up, I described the
voltage regulator as a removable diode assembly. It's the little gizmo
held on with two screws that can be replaced without removing the
alternator.

I can get a hueco glow relay for $85.xx plus $5.xx frt elsewhere, but your
price is close enough considering.

...

Here's a corrected order; all for '83 300D:

1 Hueco glow plug relay

1 Voltage regulator for Bosch alternator

6 Air cleaner mounts

20 Instrument cluster bulbs

(I'll order the vacuum actuator with a later order since I want to check the
condition of the others which may need replacing as well.)

I'll call you Monday.

Thanks,
Gerry

It's not really a bad job. You want a soft faced hammer (plastic) to
drive the pulley off it you need to, you don't want to dent it. You
may not need, to, it's been a long time since I replaced one.

Straight snap ring plier will do the job on the snap ring. It's
pretty deep, but if straight ones won't fit, right angle ones will.

Re: [MBZ] 'Nother Sondy Tale

2013-09-15 Thread WILTON
Of course, the column-of-twos dog arrangement is occasionally, but rarely,
used in Greenland. The fan allows each dog to zig and zag a bit to pick its
way amongst rough ice for the most efficient path, and it reduces the
chances of more than one dog at a time falling into a lead (open space or
crack) in the ice. 'Also enhances the quicker and easier recovery of just
one dog from the water instead of several if they are pulled into the water
one-after-the-other in a column of twos.

BTW, I'm certainly no musher - far from it; merely recounting some of my
observations and a bit of info gleaned from several mushers in Greenland and
some reading.

Thank you, Wilton.

As we stepped over amongst the second team of dogs, a very large
shaggy, black dog with the most beautiful bright, light blue eyes I've
ever seen approached and sat down in front of us and held up a huge
paw. I reached down and grasped the paw as large as my fist and
noticed that his leg was a little bigger than my wrist.

Now that's a BIG dog!

He moved my hand and arm up and down and looked me in the eye with
those bright blue eyes with a smile as if to say, Very well, Sir, How
are you?

Wonderful personality -- a good thing to have in a dog that large.

The column-of-two allows them to go between trees; the lack of trees
Greenland is more conducive to the fan arrangement.

I wonder if the fan arrangement has some inherent advantages over the
column-of-two arrangement -- one could use a column-of-two in Greenland
even though it's not strictly necessary.

Re: [MBZ] Diagnosis Confirmation, Please, now HELP?

2013-09-15 Thread Dan Penoff
Here is where we're at:

I have the pulley off and can see the snap ring that holds the clutch coil on.
However, I don't have enough room to get a snap ring pliers into the center of
the coil to get at the snap ring. I have a right angle set of snap ring
pliers, but they're not long enough to reach.

I see a set at HF that has removable bits but it doesn't look like they are
that long. I may go that route and see if I can fabricate a set of bits that
will reach into the recess.

It's a damned tight spot to work in, and there's very little room to maneuver
tools around, not to mention I'm having to work with a light and mirror at the
same time.

If it wouldn't be such a PITA, I would pull the radiator so I could get a
straight shot at it.

Suggestions, PLEASE!!

Thanks,

Dan

Re: [MBZ] Diagnosis Confirmation, Please, now HELP?

2013-09-15 Thread Dan Penoff
I actually attempted to make some new bits for the snap ring pliers using 10
gauge finishing nails, whihc are just the right size. Unfortunately, the
pliers just won't hold them tight due to the length and the amount of leverage
being imposed on them (this snap ring is really tight!)

I have two directions I can go at this point:

1.) Retreat and reassemble everything, or;

2.) Drain the cooling system and pull the radiator to see if I can get enough
clearance to get at it straight on. This one is iffy.

I looked at possibly dropping the compressor so I could get a straight shot at
the front from below by just letting it loose and allowing the front of it to
tip down, but it appears that there is a solid line on the back that is bolted
t the engine and near impossible to get at.

Anybody with suggestions Im so damned close to this and I just can't get
it!

Aaaargh!!!

Pulling the radiator on a 124 takes about 15 minutes if your transmission

Were you not able to wrap the extensions tightly enough with wire? Would
some notches filed in backsides of the plier tongues help to secure the
wrapping wire a little better? Can you mount the extensions so that
compression during use tends to tighten them instead of twisting them to the
side or pulling them askew and/or off? May we see a photo of the pliers?

I considered that, but one of the hard lines that goes around the back of the
compressor is bolted up in a way I don't think I can get at it.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

I relented and drained the cooling system and pulled the radiator. Major PITA,
but only took about 15 minutes. I knew that would be the case just as it is
with 123 and 126 chassis', too, as they all come out in a jiffy. Just a mess I
didn't want to deal with, but

Took a couple of tries with the snap ring pliers but I got it out.

Drum roll, please...

The ground wire was broken on the clutch coil right behind the pulley.

wah, wah, wah

No worries, as there is no way we could have seen it without pulling everything
off anyway, but at least it confirms that the clutch coil, was, in fact, not
working.

So I'm taking a respite to recover from my frustrations and in an hour or so
I'll start putting everything back together.

More as I know it, and thanks to all who offered advice and suggestions.

air cleaner mounts that are not APA/URO about 2 to 2.50 each. instrument

[MBZ] poos detailing

2013-09-15 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
The hood on my 92 300SD is oxidized bad, it has been repainted at some
point and oxidized when the rest of the car has not. I have been meaning
to buff it out for a long time but have never got around to it. Today I
washed the car and messed with buffing it. I just used what I had on
hand and it did not work all that well. I had some turtle wax polishing
compound in a quirt bottle and my 9 random orbital buffer. I buffed on
it quite a while and ended up really scrubbing on it by hand in one
corner and could tell it was starting to shine up but was going to take
many hours and lots of manual scrubbing to get it off. So I gave up till
I could get some proper equipment, probably a Harbor Freight regular
buffer and something other that Turtle wax. Poos you use a buffer? I
do NOT want to do it by hand, I am way too lazy and hate detailing cars.
You use 3m products, right? What do you recommend to cut down really
bad oxidation, followed with a nice wax that will last a long time.

[MBZ] AC Issues

2013-09-15 Thread Dan Penoff
WE. HAVE. AC.

Despite the roadblocks tossed up in this job, I finally got it together and
working.

I ended up repairing the broken wire on the original clutch coil, as the
generic replacement would have required some minor machine work to duplicate a
hole for a locating pin. Once I got the wires repaired I was able to
reassemble everything without too much difficulty.

I will say that tensioning the serpentine belt is a lot easier with the
radiator out

So all back together and blowing cold. Not ICE COLD, but cold. With the system
working I can deal with charging if necessary.

Gawd, what a horrible job! I don't want to have to do that again

I think Kaleb provided a very good reason earlier when he informed us as
to the level of service received at the local dealer.
These things are as complicated as a modern petrol burner and as such
will more than likely have as many issues, in their electronic
management systems and will have expensive bits that are needing to be
replaced on a regular basis.
Anyone that things they will get old school mechanical Diesel

Then there is the question of how much more these will cost, compared to
a similar MB with a petrol engine?

Re: [MBZ] 1984 Mercedes 300D mono valve

2013-09-15 Thread Scott Ritchey

Good advice from Wilton. The monovalve stops water flow when energized if
it's working right. I fixed mine twice; once when it was cruded up (my
fault) and once when the diaphragm tore. In all probability, the insert is
all that needs to be replaced and it's an easy job.

Funny story. Had my 82 300SD in a local AC shop to top up the R12. The
tech had the engine idling forever before he finally got started. After
adding some R12, all the temps and pressures looked good but it was not
blowing ice cold, not by a long shot. The tech played with it a long time
but it never got better. When he finally shut off the engine it wouldn't
restart. After charging and jumping he got it started again and I left.
Turns out he ran down the battery (idling with the AC on and the blower on
high) so far the battery voltage got pretty low. So low that the monovalve
let hot water run through the heater core, heating the AC air. After I got
out on the road with enough RPMs to charge the battery it was fine, and has
been ever since.

[MBZ] monark VS bosch injector nozzles

2013-09-15 Thread Rick Hawkins Java

I saw the discussion about Jaime's new monarks, etc.

As i understand it, the Monark nozzles are the only ones still made in
Germany the new Bosch come from India now, i am told.

I've also been told that the Bosh factory rebuilds have inconsistent
pop pressures and bad spray patterns but i don't know that personally.

The WVO folks swear by the Monark. I am running a set of Monarks in my
1982 300td. I set them up with increased pop pressure for running WVO.

thanks,

The secret food was my nearly famous dutch oven bbq, this year with sausage

Strangely nobody got a picture of that, you can get an idea from this:

Good advice from Wilton. The monovalve stops water flow when energized if
it's working right. I fixed mine twice; once when it was cruded up (my
fault) and once when the diaphragm tore. In all probability, the insert
is

all that needs to be replaced and it's an easy job.

So low that the
monovalve
let hot water run through the heater core, heating the AC air. After I
got
out on the road with enough RPMs to charge the battery it was fine, and
has

been ever since.

back in the day, i believe dr booth hated monarch, or at least the glow
plugs, but i'd use them (along with the iskra starter) as i liked hotter
and was ok with changing them annually so i didn't care that they were
short lived. i remember their being a lot of anti monark sentiment.

i've mostly messed with bosch as bosch is OE but i'm not in principle
predisposed against monark injector parts as i would be if someone
suggested apa/uro injectors

I got the opportunity to drive John's Astro van (not a bad ride, it'd be

 shifter),
 Steve's immaculate '85 300D and Dimitri's 280SL. Parts were swapped,

Straight snap ring plier will do the job on the snap ring. It's pretty

Honda sells (or did in 1986, anyway) a rather nicely forged 90° long skinny

pliers. They were about 8 bucks back then.
