Re: [MBZ] OT: diesel genset
The field current is DC, isn't it? Can you add an external output transistor to the new AVR? This was supposed to be the easy way out. Rather than that I'd probably just resurrect the original AVR. I have parts. Yes, indeed! Just get some more 8 Amp fuses. What happens if you don't use an AVR but put a variable DC current into the field windings? When I did this on Big Bertha the output voltage was quite unstable. Is there a way to check out the field coil or determine how much current it should take? The field current doesn't do any actual work, so 8 amps sounds I'm not sure. This thing is bugging me. I knew when I bought it that it was a gamble. It is possible that there's a crowbar on the AVR field to deliberately blow the fuse if it goes overvoltage. No schematic, you see, and potted, so it's possible. More research required, I suppose, but right now I'm disgusted with it. The field coil does have a short to frame in the middle. I do not know if there's one or more coils shorted out by this, or if it's just broken insulation. If so, yes there will be less field, but as the field is DC there shouldn't be any other overt harm. As I recall the coils don't look burnt. Stupid no-name Chinese thing. I'm sure another genny head would be probably $50 in China, if you knew what to order or where to get it. 10hp Coleman. Engine runs beautifully, but output is 0v on the 120v and 240v terminals. Any idea how to go about troubleshooting? Two ideas. The typical generator is 220V center tapped, rated at (let's say) 7kW. But that's half per side, and most people don't check the two windings separately for current overload. Overload one side (up to 2x) and you burn out the winding. Then the party's over. If this is a brushless generator the components rotating on the back of the genny are in a pretty harsh place. Burnt diode, broken trace, that sort of thing. Fixable, if you can get to it. Or, if like mine and _has_ brushes, the AVR could have burnt out. Very easy Tim. Someone must program the computer, and it's VERY easy to get them to do whatever you want instead of tally the votes as cast. This has been demonstrated quite a few times, and is an issue that gets buried. We aren't talking about errors here, we are talking about malfeasance. As far as recording what you vote with your name, that's probably already happening. The system in my precinct: Serially numbered paper ballots with tear off tabs at the top. Your name goes on the tab, and you color in the circles for your votes with ink. Then you, the voter, put the ballot in a cardboard sleeve for privacy, and an election worker observes you putting the ballot in the scanner and verifies with you that the ballot scanned. For audit purposes, we have paper ballots in the scanner, traceable to the voters by serial number. I'm sure any amount of fudging would be possible in the computer tabulation, but in a recount they'd count the paper ballots just like old times. I suppose the trick is to have enough fraud that nobody thinks its close enough to ask for a recount. We vote on computers here, no paper implied or intended. A bit of fudging on the software, and who knows what will happen. The point of a printed ballot verified by the voter (without name, and retained by the precinct) is that a correct tabulation can be done without the computer. I'm all for voting access, but I'm deeply suspicious of involving computers. We need speed in voting far less than we need accuracy. Re: [MBZ] OT: diesel genset
If it has sat for long without being used, the fields probably need to be flashed. Cheap generator = cheap steel in the laminations. Cheap steel doesn't hold residual magnetism, which is needed for fields to build up, so if the generator is stored for long periods of inactivity, the residual magnetism isn't there when you start it up, and it won't build up output. Find the field windings (probably connected to a bridge rectifier of some sort in the back end or under a cover) and disconnect them. Start the engine and while it's running put +12VDC from a battery or other source to the fields for a few seconds. Shut the engine down and reconnect the field windings to the rectifier/regulator. Start engine and see if output builds up. Dan On Jan 12, 2014, at 8:39 AM, Mitch Haley wrote: Jim Cathey wrote: 10hp Coleman. Engine runs beautifully, but output is 0v on the 120v and 240v terminals. The US and Japan 103.983 engines got a MAS relay for some reason, apparently pin 1 is battery, pin 2 is feed to fuel pumps http://www.autolib.diakom.ru/CAR/Mercedes-Benz/1993/190E/SYSTEM%20WIRING%20DIAGRAMS/4410.pdf Lots of stuff here http://w124-zone.com/downloads/MB%20CD/W124/Index/103index.html A new fuel distributor may well need adjusting, which is done with an allen key down the top but should really be be done whilst reading the lambda codes. http://w124-zone.com/downloads/MB%20CD/W124/w124CD1/Program/Engine/103/07.3-2053.pdf Have you checked your electrical bits? The 103 is well known for having problems with the dizzy because of it's location. My advice to people generally is that if you don't have the tools or know how to diagnose the system, take it to a good shop which knows the Bosch systems and has experience. Money spent on replacing parts which may not need replacing is better spend on good diagnoses. Ohh and another clue, a KE jetronic system will generally run, even without EHA valve, O2 sensor, coolant temp sender (these bits where added to turn K into KE), this is why MB stuck with it for so long, very reliable system but not that efficient. The addition of the O2 sensor (plus bits) helped to make it a little more efficient, K jet is supposed to be tuned every service. AMEX has its merits, especially if you travel internationally. This isn't as big a deal as it used to be 15-20 years ago, however, AMEX' services, especially for travelers, can't be beat. That being said, if I wasn't planning any international travel there's no reason to pay their outrageous fees. For credit card services in general, MC and VISA are far better accepted. Re: [MBZ] OT: diesel genset
Missed that part. That would imply a breaker tripping, regulator failing, or a winding blowing open. I listed these in the most probable reasons. If it's a brushless unit with a rotating diode bridge on the rotor, and it probably is, there's a possibility a diode opened up, too. If they short you lose output, but it rarely goes to zero as there is enough excitation from the half wave that's getting through the windings to build up some output. Re: [MBZ] 1990 MB 300E - Replaced Fuel Distributor - Running rough...help!
The main leaks on a K-jet system are at the idle speed control valve, the boot on the throttle body, and the hose at the cold start valve. Note that a cold start valve failed open will flood the engine badly at idle. Here's what I would do: Remove the air filter housing and verify that the air meter flap is all the way up with the engine off. If it's not, you will have to remove the fuel distributor and find out why. Even slightly depressed below zero position will cause the engine to flood at idle. If it's rubbing on the venturi it will also run lean immediately on throttle opening until it unsticks. If it's all the way up, press down gently (engine off, but fuel pressure). It MUST move smoothly with no hangs or roughness and MUST return fully to the zero position all by itself. If not, the pivot or pressure pin is binding. If you see any problems, remove the fuel distributor, take the boot off, and pull and clean the pivot pin. Should restore normal function (this is a problem with cars that have had a bad air filter or a big vacuum leak). You may need to pull the regulator pin on the bottom of the fuel distributor and clean it, possibly replace the seal if there is fuel leaking. Check to make sure you didn't use a long screw when putting the boot back on the fuel distributor in the one spot you have to use a short one, as this will crush the position sensor and cause all sorts of problem with the computer. Also verify that the computer connections are clean and properly installed. Verify that the idle control valve hoses are not cracked or loose on the barbs of the idle control valve. Chronic issue with them, they split down the mold line for me and I've replaced them three times on the TE so far. I ended up using hose clamps, solved all sorts of idle problems. Might flush the idle control valve out with carb cleaner, they are usually dirty. Verify that the boot from the air flow meter to throttle body is actually over the back side of the throttle body, it's a HUGE pain to get it right. Always install the back side first, then pull it over the lip on the fender side where you can see what you are doing. If it's not over the lip all the way around, you are going to have fits. Check for fuel in the vent line from the regulator to the crankcase ventilation hose. If there is any fuel in there, the regulator has failed and can be over-pressuring the system, which will flood. It is very unlikely that the fuel mixture needs to be changed -- almost always, you have another issue causing the problem. Test the cold start valve. You can pull it out of the hose while still attached just after shutting the engine off, if its' dripping, replace it. If you have a helper, have them start the car with the valve out of the hose but still connected, it should puff a very short squirt unless it's very cold, then stop completely. Dribbles will flood you out. If nothing seems wrong and it still runs rich, I would clean the pivot and regulator pin on the old fuel distributor, fix the vacuum leaks (likely a hardened boot and idle control valve hoses) and re-install it. Sadly, sitting unused causes serious problems with K-jet fuel distributors, and in the worst case the diaphragm corrodes through. This results in fuel pouring into the engine, just as you describe. A stuck meter flap will do the same thing, though, and is easier to fix. Thanks Mitch. I'm still battling mine, I suspect I need to bite the bullet and take the fuel distributor off and clean everything up. Thanks, If I get it right, you have a : 10 hp gas engine generator, running at 3600 RPM, 110/220 v, 60 cycle generator. The engine runs OK.. The generator does not produce it's rated 6KV. If it is a brush type, it could be the brushs failed, thus no contact to transfer the electricity generated. If it is an alternator type, it still may have a brush comutator [under the little rectangle box at the end would be likely], if that brush has failed, or has poor contact, the exciter for the alternator would not get excited and you wouldn't make power. [perhaps, It may not be the system you have] Coleman has a support center. With model number /serial number information, give them a call. Since the plastic cover over the brushes on my 1980s Coleman started falling off and I saw what was under it, I'd been meaning to take a small screwdriver over to their house, pry off the similar cover on the back of their generator head, and see if there are brushes under there. For audit purposes, we have paper ballots in the scanner, traceable to the voters by serial number. Re: [MBZ] 98 ML with tranny trouble
I had very good experiences buying from Potomac in the past. LKQ, which bought Potomac several years ago, and has a huge warehouse and fleet of trucks near where I live in North Central Florida, seemed like a good place to buy used parts in the future; so I ordered an alternator. The alternator came shrink wrapped in opaque plastic so I didn't open it. I put it on the shelf as a spare; thinking it would be on a par with Potomacs parts. When I opened it several months later I found it was caked with grease and mud, the slip rings were highly grooved, and the brushes worn far down; nothing close to the clean and well tested parts I had bought from Potomac. As far as I am concerned LKQ should be avoided, at least for retail sales. It is probably interested primarily in selling body parts to body shops since that's what we see them constantly hauling in and out of the warehouse. Re: [MBZ] 1990 MB 300E - Replaced Fuel Distributor - Running rough...help!
Thanks for the great feedback! I have quite a it to work with. I will keep the group informed -Original Message- From: Peter Frederick psf...@earthlink.net To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Sun, Jan 12, 2014 12:20 pm Subject: Re: [MBZ] 1990 MB 300E - Replaced Fuel Distributor - Running rough...help!
