Back when wind was big the first time due to tax subsidies (MEOW as Jimmuh called it), I was tasked to study something called a superconducting magnetic energy storage system. This is basically a large supercooled metal donut into which electrical energy is injected, then it keeps flowing until pulled out. A very cold battery. Regarding cleaner air and better health, replacing coal power plants with natural gas is a huge step forward. I just finished listening to a podcast interview of Gregory Zuckerman about his book The Frackers: The Outrageous Inside Story of the New Billionaire Wildcatters. Zuckerman proposed that we should be helping China use fracking to find more gas and oil in their country, so they can replace their coal power plants with gas fired plants, like we are. It seems that fracking is a game changer, and cheap abundant gas is our energy future, vice nuclear. Re: [MBZ] Craig's New Ride
I think it was charge/discharge cycles over time. Something like 8-10 years, but as little as six. Short trips and poor driving habits (hard braking and accel). The base load is handled by the gas engine, the electric is used for power boost on highway and for slow speed/city traffic/starts. Gas cuts off at a stop, battery takes over for ultra slow speed travel until something like 6+mph. There is also a latent drain on the main lithium cells at rest. If the car is not taken for a ride regularly, it drains and reduces capacity and life span. Grandma had an early priapismo and it died quietly in the garage. It being a sunday driver less than a mile to church. clay On Nov 13, 2014, at 10:51 AM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote: I guess my next question would be, how long can one expect the main battery to last? Re: [MBZ] Craig's New Ride -- StopStart
Speaking of electrics and such, I noticed a coupla weeks ago sitting at a stop light next to a GLK that the motor was shutting off, then starting again when the car moved. The driver kept creeping forward so the car must have stopped and started 4 or 5 times while sitting there. That surprised me. Then last week I was at a light next to a new S and same thing, the engine stopped and started. With both cars it was very quick to start, barely a turn of the crank it seemed. Is this the new fuel-savings method Benz have implemented? Must be killer on the starter and battery.
