Only the stuff on weather radar that is colored darker yellow or (everyone

What kind of diesel tractor (other than just JD)? Might try
ames.craigslistfor that one -- Deere tractors in Iowa are like
surf-fishin'-pickups on the

maybe $5500. Was like $12k new. Tractor maybe $4500.

So I was thinking to set a reserve on these two items. But if they
don't sell the auctioneer still gets 10% of the reserve . If they do
sell he gets 20% of the total. The kicker is that he will shill the
bids to run them up. So if I set $5000 reserve on the boat, then he
runs the real bid to $4800 then he bids $4900 and I say go for it, that
is not a real bid and I am screwed -- I pay him $500 and still have the
boat. Or if I set a low reserve I could get screwed on the price -- he
could let it go for $2500 and still get his $500 so what does he care.

I want to get rid of the stuff, but I also don't want to get screwed on
some low price with a 20% commission, or end up still having these

Lest I mislead anyone, I will NOT be paying $13K for that bike. One should
not finance a two-wheel transportation damp-dream (staying Mercedes-list

pay. That would be like Donald Trump buying ... uh ... give me a moment

Saw a really sexy Screamin' Eagle Dresser in the Harley showroom (used) that
was priced at $28K.

My house cost me $75K and it has a four car garage.

Some of us are in need of more garage space. My 2 car garage is full and
we'd like some room to keep the daily drivers.

Some of you may have seen those car port structures made of sheetmetal -
usually a single car carport is around $800 or less. Many are sold at gas
stations, convienence stores, etc - anything that can be seen from the
street by those driving by.

I saw one that was a completely enclosed 3 car garage for $6300 delivered
and installed on your site. The buyer is expected to level the site with
sand, gravel, concrete, whatever and it's installed in 1 day. Level is
needed so the roll up doors will operate properly. If a concrete fdn is
not
used they anchor them with mobile home anchors which appear to be very
stable.

Anyone have any experience with these? I'm thinking about one that is
20'x36' with 3 rollup doors, one walk-in and one window. More options can
be added as desired -

Re: [MBZ] 240D won't start-- Vacuum??

2007-04-23 Thread LT Don

Pull-start it. See the owner's manual for the how-to-do. Works great and the
car seems to shake off the cobwebs.

On 4/22/07, AJ RN [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Okay..

I rolled my '81 240D off the ramps yesterday, after changing the rear
diff fluid (boy-- I bet THAT stuff was there since the Reagan
Administration!)..

It stalled when it came off the ramps, and refuses to restart..

IN THE LAST WEEK-- I replaced the passenger rear window (as some
vandal put a rock thru it!). Also last week, I changed the
transmission fluid (including draining the TC) and put up a new filter..

I also put up a new starter-- because the old one wasn't always
engaging.. (New one works fine, and I had it bench tested at Autozone
BEFORE I put it up)

Anyway--

The car has historically HAD a vac leak-- to shut it off, you turned
the key, and locked the driver's door, and it would stumble out.. The
central locks 'sorta' worked, but not meaningfully-- it would take
probably a minute of driving, and not all of the cylinders would suck
down on any given day.. It seemed to VARY from day to day which one
wouldn't work-- and it apparently quickly lost 'reserve' as I don't
think I ever successfully locked all the doors from the key (ignition
off).

Okay...

What I know is that I have a car with a known vacuum issue, that
realistically had that system manipulated and now it won't start..

..Everything appears connected, so I don't see an easy fix.

As I look under the hood, I see one 'main' vac line-- going straight
to the brake booster.

There are two tees off of that.

One goes to the firewall, where it branches three times, with the
middle branch having what appears to be a check valve, then branching
twice, before entering the firewall. All 5 of those 'branches' appear
color coded-- which will hopefully aid what I'm going to ask.. Two
appear yellow (the last branches, with the check valve) there's a
brown and blue one, a black one (that go to the IP) etc..

The second one goes 'on top' of the valve cover to what appears to be
some sort of valve. It has one branch capped off, and a tee with what
appears to be another check valve on one branch.. These lead to black
and black and brown striped leads that, again, go to the IP.

What I'm hoping to do-- is isolate out the central locking 'branch' or
branches-- to see if I can't get the car started..

Oh-- since it wasn't starting, and I'd planned on replacing both fuel
filters--
that is done, I filled both with ATF, as I'd previously heard that it's a
good clean
and lube for the IP.. I tried cracking the injectors, to reprime those--
and
found
little if any fuel coming out-- leading me to believe the IP isn't getting
sufficient
vaccuum to 'spray..'

I looked under the hood of my '84 300SD.. UH-- the engine looks sort
of familiar, but the vac system is wholly different, with exception of
4 vac lines leading into the IP.. (So that wasn't a help!!)

SO-- anyone who can direct me to a color code, or tell me which goes
to what would be doing me an incredible service..

I considered hooking a vac gauge to one of the tees, while I cranked,
to make sure the vac pump itself hadn't failed..

In my VW diesels-- vac pump failure meant brake effort worthy of
stopping a downhill speeding overloaded truck.. The breaking in the
240D has NEVER shown that, previously..

The vac pump looks to be a lot harder to get out, on this engine, than
the VW (one bolt on the top of the motor!) so I'm really hoping that's
not the case..

Okay-- I'll shut up now!

AJ

I think the original question was about the Acura.

My '89 Integra was a DAMN'd fine car. I'd buy an Integra sight-unseen if

More importantly, WHERE in Maine. I've probably been there.

On 4/8/07, Curt Raymond [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Here's one of those ideas I might be shy to float in person...

We've got a little camp in Maine, totally backwoods, woodstove, gas
lights, you get the idea.
On the last couple trips I've been frustrated with trying to read by
flashlight in my bunk. The bunk is arranged such that the gas lights are of
no use and I can't put a gas light up there because I'd either wack it or
catch the roof on fire. I hate flashlights mostly because of the directional
nature of the beam and replacing the battery.

So I'm thinking to get a 12v LED reading light bulb(2watt), a 12v garden
tractor battery and use a 5 watt solar panel I already have to make myself a
reading light.
I found a site that has the bulb for a somewhat reasonable price
(considering it should last a long time) and even in a kit with a fixture.
The fixture seems to just be a conventional light fixture with a cigar
lighter type plug for which they want $40.
So the question: could I take a conventional light fixture and run 12v
through it as long as I'm using a 12v bulb?

To head off questions, 12v because the inverter would waste alot of power
and make noise. LED because CF bulbs wouldn't work well in the cold and yes
sometimes I am up reading but too lazy to stoke the fire. I intend to leave
the 2 prong connector on the lamp so extension cords will be easier. With a
5w panel I don't think I'll need a charge controller and a 10ah (or whatever
they are) garden tractor battery should run my light for a long time.
Assuming it works well and my folks want lights like it I'd step up to maybe
a 20w panel and charge controller.

Just for kicks, I put up an FTP server this morning and loaded on the data
from the two W123 CDs.

You should be able to access at ftp://don.homelinux.net/pub/

This of course is not an invitation to view or download copyrighted
material, etc. etc. etc.

Viewing works best if you use something like Firefox, downloading (which of
course would be illegal) would work much better using real a real client.

This data might disappear at any time -- again, this is just an experiment.

I concur. I had to replace some line on the VW, and I simply cut the steel
fuel line at a convenient place and used the highest grade of rubber line
that I could find.

My son's '85 300D has a leak in the fuel line located under the car, right
below the drivers seat.
It is the largest of the three lines routed through that area. The small
diameter line is a brake line, and I think the medium sized one is for
fuel
return. So the leaking one is probably fuel supply.
I clamped a piece of bicycle inner tube around it to solve the problem
temporarily. But what are my options for replacing it? I don't see fuel
lines on Rusty's site. Does the dealer suppy them? Or do I have to buy
some kind of tubing and make a new line myself?

Re: [MBZ] Notes from the field: 123 vacuum issues

2007-04-01 Thread LT Don

Suggestion. For a quick-and-dirty, plug the lines that go to the door locks,
etc., at the t and leave vacuum going only to the IP shutoff and (if
applicable) to the transmission. MIne's been that way for a while and no
issues.

daily by my wife, but has been severely neglected by me, due to its
unfortunate penchant for utter reliability, and my disdain for working on
the 123 chassis. I know it needs lots of front end work, 'cause it chews
through tires at an alarming rate (inners wear really quickly). And, the
doorlocks and IP shutoff are slow to respond, if at all.

My daughter is flying up on the 2nd, so I have very little time to

Re: [MBZ] OkieQ Dates

2007-03-30 Thread LT Don

I have a small garden plot, maybe 10' x 20' max. But that is the place we
burn leaves each fall and the soil is really rich with ash. I know from
experience that tomatoes love the alkaline soil that ash offers. I have to
throw away several every year when they get too big for their own skins and
actually burst on the vine, trying to grow.

One problem (like it really IS a problem) is that almost everyone has a
garden in our town, and at harvest time folks are actively looking for
someone who will take a box of cucumbers off of their hands. As God is my
witness, folks will pull up to our office with a PICKUP TRUCK LOAD of sweet
corn, hoping they can unload it on our mentally retarded group home folks.
And we always say yes, thank you, and we use it.

Late July in west-central Iowa, you can go home with a Benz load of fresh
produce, along with a thank-you note from the farmer for taking it off of
his hands.

Don't even ask me about zucchini!

Check MapQuest for Jefferson, Iowa.

I missed the beginning of this conversation, so forgive me it I repeat

Tomatoes love sun, but require regular moisture. Non commercial
varieties are vastly preferable for home growing -- I grow Better Boys
(a VFN resistant version of the old Burpee Big Boy) and some Roma
variety (also VFN, as I have wilt problems). With good rainfall, I am
over-run with tomatoes even in poor years. Oh, and I do grow some
Lemon Boys since I prefer them for fresh eating.

Commercial varieties are breed to remain rock hard so they won't
bruise, and they also do not ripen on the plant, they are picked
slightly pink and gassed with ethylene on the way to the market to turn
them sort of red. Taste like what they are -- cellulose and green
tomato juice. I think cotton balls taste better myself, or that gauze
packing the dentist uses when doing major work.

If you have fresh ground and are not bothered by verticillium or
fusarium wilts and don't have nematode problems, you can grow some of
the heirloom types and get wonderful tomatoes. Most aren't
particularly resistant, though.

I got engaged at 17 (college freshman) and married at 21 (right after
graduation).

I think my son did it right. He got his M.S. and then got a job and bought a
condo near work, and THEN got married (to a fellow VA Tech grad). Of course,
the job/condo/marriage were compressed into a couple of months, but so what.
I'd have to do math on how old he was when he got married -- born in 1978,
married about two years, subtract and carry the one, ...

Well, we met during the day and sat together for the game.
We had semi-plans to meet up at a group function later. I
was a bit surprised to see here therewith her date!
So I figured that one was a write-off. We kept running into
each other sporadically over the years after that. Sometime
in there she took time to get married and divorced.

Re: [MBZ] way OT: finding a wife

I have a good friend. Sort of a Harley guy -- about my age (early 50s),
beard pony tail, has a Harley ElectraGlide AND a Buell. He is the
supervisor of the gov't thing that runs our local transit buses. Like many
biker-types, he is a genuinely nice, gentle guy, very intelligent, well
employed, and anything but a RUB. (Ask if you don't know what a RUB is.) I
would have no problem letting him babysit my grandchildren for a weekend,
for a week, for a year. He is gentle and soft-spoken.

He brought me some digital camera shots (still on the camera) yesterday of
his recently finished garage.

I think it is a one-car but it looks like a six-car. Alternating black and
white floor tiles. Motorcycle lift. Bar. Stocked bar. Tools. Recliner.
Furnace (remember, this is Iowa). Television (with satellite dish). In one
corner, two motorcycles. No car, no wife-storage-unit crap like my garage.

He refers to it as his Wife Avoidance Unit.

But ... just in case you think this is Mr. Macho, guess again. His wife
heads the dietary dept of the local hospital. His cholesterol is high. Guess
what Mr. Biker is having for supper these days? Steak? I don't think so,
say hello to your new friend Mr. Broccoli.
