Re: [MBZ] 123/126 air cleaner bracket

I have welded them before. They are galvanized so
do it outside with the air moving away from you. I
would also add an extra piece of metal across the
break for a couple of inches as they tend to
rebreak at the same point.

I’m wondering if it is galvanized or something as there is no rust on it, or if
it’s some metal that is not stick or mig weldable. Anyone know?

Re: [MBZ] Opinions on window tint

2022-05-14 Thread MG via Mercedes
Might want to look into the clear ceramic films.
Heard about them a couple of years ago was said to
work quite well though a bit more expensive that
others.

I was quite skeptical about them until my SIL in
Orlando had the windshield done on his new MB
coupe. I didn't see any difference when I looked
at it but I could feel the difference between
holding my hand in the sun and then holding it in
the car where the sun hit it through the
windshield. At close to $200 just for the
windshield I almost had the 300TD done but didn't
like the price at all when I thought about the
probable price for the whole car, what with the
big windows around the back.

that. I am on the line with 123 but I still think it is appropriate on
that. My thought anything 115 or older it is out of place. What about
116? Not sure on that one. Thoughts? I am thinking about getting my

Re: [MBZ] OT: anyone using an under-counter water filter?

2022-05-31 Thread MG via Mercedes
Mine looks like the Watts Premier 5-Stage Reverse
Osmosis System. still works great after about 10
years. I like it because I can pick up all the
filters on line for cheap. I originally looked at
the ones that Lowe's and Home Despot sell but
those all required filters, because of specialize
cast in place fitting, that were only available
from the manufacturers and thus were much more
expensive. L and HD still seem to specialize in
those proprietary type of systems. After all they
make more money off the sale of those special fit
filters.

when the water flow slows down enough to be annoying.

It was expensive but the filter container and mount is stainless as is the
spout on the sink, I don't think it'll never need replacing. I use discount CB6

So, he has not seen the house, but you have not seen him either? What do
you mean by "everything checks out with him"? Did you get any

I love our old 03 Tacoma. It has the

The only thing is that it gets about 20

that is the one we use the most for

[MBZ] OT country Preacher's son

2021-04-26 Thread MG via Mercedes

A little light humor

An old country preacher had a teenage son, and it
was getting time the boy should give some thought
to choosing a profession. Like many young men his
age, the boy didn't really know what he wanted to
do, and he didn't seem too concerned about it. One
day, while the boy was away at school, his father
decided to try an experiment. He went into the
boy's room and placed on his study table four objects:

1. Bible

2. Silver Dollar

3. Bottle of Whiskey

4. Playboy magazine

"I'll just hide behind the door", the old preacher
said to himself. "When he comes home from school
today, I'll see which object he picks up."

"If it's the Bible, he's going to be a preacher
like me, and what a blessing that would be !"

"If he picks up the dollar, he's going to be a
business man, and that would be okay, too."

"But if he picks up the bottle, he's going to be a
no-good drunken bum, and Lord, what a shame that
would be."

"And worst of all if he picks up that magazine
he's going to be a skirt-chasing womanizer."

The old man waited anxiously, and soon heard his
son's footsteps as he entered the house whistling
and heading for his room. The boy tossed his books
on the bed, and as he turned to leave the room, he
spotted the objects on the table. With curiosity
in his eye, he walked over to inspect them.

Finally, he picked up the Bible and placed it
under his arm.

He picked up the silver dollar and dropped into
his pocket

He uncorked the bottle and took a big drink, while
he admired the magazine's centerfold.

"Lord have mercy", the old preacher disgustedly
whispered, "He's going into politics!!"

In 2010 I bought this setup as well as another
sensor and the handheld portable receiver. That
way when I am out and about in the yard, 42ac, I
have communication with the house. I replace the
batteries once a year before it gets cold and it
still works flawlessly. Well except for the few
times when I have to clear out the wasp nests in
the detector cone which is a problem you will have
with any detector.

I have bought a couple of other less expensive
items before that promised up to 1/2 miles
reception but delivered less then 200 feet.

Can't say enough good things about that Dakota system.

On this one you can set the sensing to exclude
smaller animals. I don't mind the batteries since
the drive is overhung with trees so based on all
the other items I have that are solar and don't
work in the shade after a few days I'm happy with
what I have, especially since I have all those
trees between the house and the gate. The second
one works just as good at over 1000 feet also
through trees. With the cheaper units I found that
those trees cut a lot of signal.

I've had deer in the front yard and deer in the back yard, but never saw

So I'm hoping the deer don't wake me up in the night.

Re: [MBZ] heavier 123 front springs

2021-06-25 Thread MG via Mercedes
Yes and 32-250 gives the lengths and resistance
values for a whole bunch of the springs. The
problem is that Mercedes does not have all of them
available any more. It might be possible to have
an aftermarket spring company build you the
springs once you figure out which ones you want.

David Bruckmann via Mercedes wrote:

Job 32-010 in the W123 Chassis and Body Service Manual Vol 1 has a three-page

I decided to drive the 123 wagon with the motor swap. It is pretty great. I
put the cat back on to pass CARB. It is a euro wagon, so if it were not
motor swapped, there would be no way to license it here in CA, lacking as
it does a federal emissions sticker. With a 2006 motor it can be done, as
long as it conforms to stock tune and emissions specs for 2006. Which it
now does.

Adding the cat back cost some performance for sure. But it also made the
car far less stinky to drive. It now drives like any modern car, except
more torque. The exhaust gas recirculation seems very loud also when it is
on, which seems to be mostly when the car is cold for some reason. I think
it shuts the VNT vanes down tight to raise the EGP and shunt the exhaust
back through a cooler to the intake when the cat is cold.

Anyway, the front springs are a little light for the om648. The car is not
super low, but the suspension doesn't have enough travel up front, and oil
pan will hit a concrete parking stop if I drive up too close. I was
thinking of trying some 126 front springs. Anyone know if they are any
stiffer? Thanks.

My cheap instinct is to take the money and later fix it myself, but

It sounds like you'll need to set up a dial indicator to find the center

wedge of some sort, assuming you can do that without bending the other
flange out instead...if you go too far then it's big brass hammer taps

If the whole pulley is bent instead of just one flange, it might get a

big brass hammer inboard of the flanges you might get it right.

The drilled rotors are really not necessary except

the same price? There are drilled on the front now, but I am curious why they would
offer solid too and which is better?
The Genuine Mercedes Benz kits are much more expensive and I am not sure if
it's worth the extra money. I would appreciate feedback on brands and sources.
   As always thanks in advance.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Dodge 4wd

2022-10-06 Thread MG via Mercedes
Aren't the transfer case and the transmission
bolted together?

If they are is that vac line near the back of the
case?

If so then it might be possible to lower the back
end of the transmission to regain the correct
spacing. It might even be that it is just the rear
transmission mount crossmember that is bent upward.

Check the cab mounts and see if the frame is bent
down a bit or even if the mounting point on the
cab floor is bent upward?

Just off the wall thoughts.

I noticed that my wrecked-then-repaired Dodge pickup ('97, diesel) didn't
seem to have operating 4wd, and today I think I figured out why. The wreck
shifted the transfer case upwards towards the tunnel an inch or so, and that's
enough to kink the vacuum hoses that come out the connector on top of the
transfer case. (I compared it visually to my '96 V10 truck.)

The front axle engagement is driven by vacuum, and the 4wd dash light is
driven by a switch on the front axle. So, unless everything's working correctly
you don't get the light.

I'm not quite sure what to do here. Punch a dome up in the sheet metal of the
tunnel using a floor jack? Tear apart the vacuum connector and try to fit
90-degree
elbows in there? Take truck to real frame shop to have it all torqued into
spec?

The Costco price (members only) was significantly lower than all the other

This brand looks pretty good and has a lot of positive reviews. They’re

will let it sit.

While I'm at it, years ago I ordered new control levers and this seems like
the right time to install them so that I can actually regulate the fan
speed, for example.

So I followed Jaime's excellent instructions and I am now at the
"disconnecting" stage. Is there any advice apart from not losing clips and
so on? I'm guessing the castellated washers or whatever they're called that
grip the shaft are simply something one squeezes to release, or am I in for
a struggle?

Re: [MBZ] Pulling torque converter?

2021-10-26 Thread MG via Mercedes
Don't wait too long to get that TC off and stored
with a tight cap over the neck to keep dirt and
water out. If the cap doesn't cover the neck all
the way down then put some grease on there to keep
it from rusting. Heck even a baggie and rubber
band will work for a short time.

Usually you don't want to pull the transmission
without the TC still in it. That can cause bending
problems on the input shaft. FOR SURE you do not
want to try to install a transmission without
putting the TC in the transmission first. Most
cases you won't ever get the TC lined up and the
transmission in place if the TC is bolted to the
flex plate first. I've seen guys try it, bolt the
transmission down tight when they think it's right
and then wonder why they can't turn the engine
over or why the transmission doesn't work any
more, even after they take it all out and do it
right. By then either the transmission or the TC
insides are damaged.

Re: [MBZ] Chain saws

2023-03-02 Thread MG via Mercedes
I have a Greenworks 16" 40V saw that I bought some
5-6 years ago. I was unsure about how good it
would work but I'm convinced that I'm not going
back to gas. I even went and bought the string
trimer and pole saw all of them use the same
batteries. When I bought them all came with a
battery and charger so I have extra chargers and
batteries.
At 73 I find that even now the two 4AH and two 2AH
batteries will last for about 3/4 hour of cutting.
after that I am ready to go inside and sit down
and let the batteries charge because I've cut
enough wood to last for the next month of the cold
season down here in the Gainesville area of Fl. We
heat entirely with wood so it is a goodly pile
that will require splitting but I tend to leave
that for later. Kind of done in with cutting by then.
Really like the saw and I have replaced the bar a
couple of times and worn out 3-4 chains with
resharpening in the years I've had it. Still works
good.

Re: [MBZ] How do I drain/clean the brake fluid reservoir?

2023-09-05 Thread MG via Mercedes
If it was mine I would take the brake line loose
either from the master cylinder or at the caliper
and pump the fluid out and then also flush some
new fluid through. Reconnect the line and bleed to
get a good peddle. Don't think I would flush with
the alcohol.

MG

Craig via Mercedes wrote:

In my continuing project of repairing the brakes of my 1980 W116 300SD,
I went to suck the old brake fluid out of the reservoir on the master
cylinder. When I got to the bottom of the fluid available through the
cap, I noticed the front compartment of the reservoir still had brake
fluid in it, as the first two pictures show.

The only connection to the front compartment of the reservoir I can see
is a small channel by the front level switch and that is only a few
millimeters high. There is no way for me to get a hose through that!

I took off the front rubber cap for the front level switch thinking that
might help, but it did not.

I would rather not try to remove the reservoir from the master cylinder
and spill brake fluid everywhere.

I could use my Speedi-Bleed and push the excess fluid out of the
reservoir, through the master cylinder, through one of the brake lines,
through a caliper, and into a container -- but that would push a lot of
crud through, too.

Any suggestions?

The fourth picture shows a W123 brake fluid reservoir, which has only one
level switch. I recall it has two compartments like the W116 reservoir,
but I don't recall how (or if) I drained both compartments when I was
doing the brakes on our '82 240D/3.0. (I recall now, I purchased a new
reservoir from Rusty.)

Also, would flushing with isopropyl alchol be advisable?

Thanks,

Craig

That is my thought because I have gotten 30.2 mpg
overall on the 2020 6cyl Tacoma several times for
a 100 mile trip that includes city traffic at one
end for over 20 miles. Not very believable when
the actual calculated overall mileage since new is
24.96 taking into account all the driving and gas
put in while the computer shows something around
26. Our driving with it is 80% highway and 20 in city.

Re: [MBZ] O.T. Octane and Knock Sensors

2023-09-30 Thread MG via Mercedes

> Accurate or BS?

Well yes and no. Here is some of what I learned by
reading the Bosch Automotive Technology handbook.

 > What is the difference between higher octane
and lower octane?
 > Well, 87 octane will ignite at a lower
pressure than 93 octane.

Here he is wrong. We all know from our experiments
in igniting items that require burning, that
gasoline will ignite in open air without pressure
no matter what octane it is. So the real
explanation is that both low and high octane will
ignite at the same pressure but lower octane gas
will burn faster at a given pressure than higher
octane. This isn't normally noticed by our slow
senses but in the cylinder the flame front rate of
the burning will travel faster in low octane fuel
than in a higher octane. The higher the octane,
the slower the burn rate. If the pressure in the
cylinder is increased the molecules are squeezed
together more thus increasing the burn rate in any
octane fuel, till what results is a rather quick
and sudden explosion. Again at a lower pressure
for lower octane vs. higher octane. This results
in all the way from a slight ping of the valves
being shoved closed faster than the spring rate on
the valve springs were designed for, to a sudden
louder more violent knock of a piston slap and or
rod knock in more severe cases, from overpressure
rather than a controlled progressive burn as the
engineers intended. This has even been known to
break crankshafts or totally destroy engines as is
seen in drag racing all the time. Increasing the
octane reduces that burn rate giving time for the
piston to get over TDC. So in the end a slightly
earlier ignition timing or higher compression or
both can be used to get more power from the same
amount of gas or more gas and air can be inducted
and thus allowing even more power to be produced.

So, with 93 octane, you can compress the air (think turbo or supercharger) and
have the
> spark ignite sooner (timing advance) which
creates more power. With 87 octane, since it

change here to explodes or detonates not just

ignites at a lower pressure,
> high compression engines might ignite the gas
before the intake valve closes and you
> hear a noise (ping). Often, in old cars, you
will hear this pinging under load (moderate
> throttle going uphill). What this noise is, is
the detonation of the gas and air mixture

or exploding

in your cylinders before the intake valve is closed. The explosion is partially
sent into the intake

not..., some of the gas and air mixture might get
pushed back but no actual explosion or flame
because in that case you would get an immediate
backfire and flame out of the carburetor. Or in
the case of drag racing seeing your supercharger
get blown off the engine.

causing the noise. What a knock sensor does is detect this noise (the “pings”
or “knocks”)
and tells the computer to spark/ignite at a slightly later time.

Which allows the piston to travel over TDC and
reduce the pressure and speed of the burn. Though
usually the detected ping is so small before it is
corrected that most people don't even notice it.

*The only reason the manufacture tells you that you have to run premium fuel if
that the
vehicle was tested for gas mileage with premium. Running premium will get you
slightly
> more power per molecule of fuel, thus better
gas mileage. If you run 87 octane, you might

> get slightly (and I mean slightly)

Probably 1-2 MPG which can always be excused by
citing driving technique

less gas mileage out of your vehicle. The manufacture
> doesn’t want to get sued for advertising a
certain MPG and you getting slightly less. They

litigation with the EPS or the consumer.”

2017-01-02 Thread MG via Mercedes
All the plugs seem to be good. So what was that series of number
that you sent that had the Xs in it? copy below

Plug that connects to the GP Relay
0.0 to 0.1 X
0.0 X X0.3 - 0.4
   0.1X X 0.3 - 0.4
(where 'X' equals a plug for 12v from the relay to the GP.)

Can't really figure out what you mean here. If you could do one
number and X per line with a carriage return or Enter push after
each X it might be a bit easier to read. Something like this

0.0 to 0.1 X
0.0 X
0.3 to 0.4 X
0.1 X
0.3 to 0.4 X

Don't know if that is what you wanted to show but this way each
of the plugs is listed on it's own line.

If the values are correct then #2 seems to show a direct to
ground path. #1 may have a ground and #4 may or may not. My Fluke
shows .4 to 1.0 for good plugs and I consider bad ones are 2.0 or
more.

The worst part is that your other email where you touch the
probes to the glow plugs directly show different values.

Why?

Did you disconnect the wires to the relay from the plugs before
you did those measurements or did you just remove the intake
manifold?

Like the others say when you change the conditions of the test
then you don't know where the problem was any more.

Larry Turner via Mercedes wrote:

What does this tell me?

OK, I finally tested the Ohms at each installed Glow Plug . I think the
red probe was on the threaded tip each time and the black probe was on
the manifold. 1 - .6 (on the wire hold down nut)

1 - .6 (probe on the 12v wire hold down nut)

2 - .2

3 - .1

4 - .1

5 - .4

If so, that is pretty much a no no.

Re: [MBZ] Fused

2017-01-02 Thread MG via Mercedes
All the digital meters I've had don't care which way around the
leads are put on the battery or item to be measured for voltage.
If the leads are backwards then the reading will have - sign in
front of the numbers. Even the really cheap (free) Harbor freight
meters do this. The only time it seems to matter is if you are
testing a diode.

Well, add this to the bizarre file. I started typing this reply and it
disappeared. Poof!

Oh well, I guess that was practice. The doors were locked some how and
the alarm went off without any warning! Man! That's scary when the horn
sounds and the lights flash!Naturally I had left my keys
upstairs!So I pulled the + battery terminal.

anyway, I thought I should follow someones instructions to test the 5
pins coming from the relay. I put the Neg Probe to 1 of the 5 pins,
then I put the red probe to a ground such as the manifold. It read 0 V,
with the key turned to the pre-glow position..That didn't sound right.

So I need to decide what to do next. Might have to buy my wife a car...

Seems reasonably good, now find the fault in the wiring from the plugs to the
relay...

If the plug to the glow-plugs is disconnected and the fuse survives then, most
likely, the relay is good.

The testing of the GP removed from the engine will indicate whether the plug is
functional. BE VERY CAREFUL! Burns y'know.

Said testing will not tell you how much life is left in the plug, only a
current test will give a good indication.

Keep on keeping on.

Fred, Reading your post it sounds like you are implying if I disconnect
the GP plug from the relay and the Fuse doesn't blow, does that mean the
relay is OK?

I beg to differ on the coolest wagon part. I do have to say that
I for one would love to have a 59 Chevy wagon or elcamino for
that matter. Then I would make it better by putting a 617 engine
and the transmission into it. Might even get real creative and
add the complete rear suspension. Now that would be cool! Till
that happens I will settle for the very close second best.

I know now I get thrown out of the list. :-(

I don't care about VW polluting (every manufacturer has probably cheated at

are participating in the buyback for the simple reason that once we receive
our money (we put over 1/2 down) we will be debt free. As in totally, no
house payment, no land payment, no car payment, or CC payments

We chose the W123 wagon simply because it is the coolest wagon on the road,
Period. No other wagon comes close. It also has an incredible engine for
longevity when cared for properly. We did not choose it for it being a
diesel, just a bonus for us as my truck is a diesel (polluting bastard that
is is "ROLL COAL!") and my tractor on the farm is a diesel (Roll Coal
Jr.).

We have to have a station wagon, and the modern wagons suck. They look
like crap sandwiches. We rarely travel on the interstate, and local roads
are pretty slow going. Safety is great in a W123 wagon, for what it is,
and most likely will survive a minor fender bender better than our VW would
have with it's plastic parts and exploding airbags.

I cannot speak for others participating in the buyback, but there are other
concerns as well. Long term support, parts availability, EPA approved fix,
and dealer support. Let alone if the EPA does not approve a fix and you
keep the car and cant register it... Too many questions and easier to get
out now than wait for the hammer. For my family at least.

greenhouse gases get produced as compared with almost all gas and
probably most hybrid powered vehicles.

Re: [MBZ] Fused

2017-01-05 Thread MG via Mercedes
Probably not failing. If in doubt change the battery. Then rotate
the leads in the sockets, just twist them back and forth about 90
deg a 2-3 times that makes sure that you have a good contact. The
most important thing is to have a good contact point for the
leads. I usually push pretty hard on them so that the point digs
into the metal where you are doing the measuring. Try to get the
best contact possible.

It is an older Fluke. I also have a Innova Automotive tester (gives
Dwell setting to 2 decimal points) ;-) and also measures resistance.
But it has a error - when it is cold - say, less than 50F the top half
of the display is blank.

BTW, you wrote: "measure a known good one and so

You mean changing the test leads can change the readings?

Curley wrote:

1.2 to 1.4 ohms is normal for pencil type GPs (what you have)
As I have said before, there is great variability in meters and
leads. So, you have to know your meter by checking it on new
GPs. My fluke always reads high. so on mine, 2 is about
normal. My radio junk meter also reads high.

The normal range I gave is somewhat theoretical. If it were
actually 0.4 ohms, and there were 5 of them, and the battery was
at 14.4 V, the glow plugs would draw 180 amps

0.6 ohm would draw about 23 A - which matches what I've read on my
ammeter.

1.2 ohm would draw only 12 A max, which is noticeably less than what
I've seen with the ammeter.

But as you pointed out, simple ohm meters are not very accurate
with such low values. The ohm meter is a safe test, though. No
big sparks or blown fuses. So checking with an ohm meter is a
good plan. And as you have done, measure a known good one and so
long as you keep using the same ohm meter and test leads the
readings will probably be kinda consistent.
