When I started college that was the situation taking the commuter rail into
Boston from Fitchburg. Go stand out behind the Salvation Army store...
Now they've built a nice station with a big parking structure, ridership is up
something like 10,000%...

Pretty
close, but worse. It is an unmanned station. There is a building,
about 90 years old that is locked up...so you just wait along the
tracks...out in the elements. There is no platform, so your picture is
pretty accurate as far as that goes.

Glad to hear Des Moines isn't the only stupid state. My Dad claims the problem

Amtrak does not go to Madison, WI either...you have to go about 45 minutes
north to an abandoned station in a little town, the name of which I forget.

Anyone ever take Amtrak to Deming, NM? Thoughts on the station? LOL!

The Acella runs from Boston to DC. Theres Metroliner service into your area I
think.

From Boston to NYC the Acella runs through some very pretty and pretty
interesting areas. Where it runs right along the ocean its very pretty. Places
like were it runs through Bridgeport. CT just across the river from Groton, CT
is pretty interesting including one HUGE building where they apparently build
submarines, at least the door is submarine shaped.
I haven't gone south of NYC on the train yet, if I get the opportunity I will
though.

The only place I'd even think of suggesting synthetic is better for the car is
in the transmission. I haven't ever heard anybody say Mobil 1 in the
transmission didn't work out. Well other than the other poster who had a dirty
transmission but that wasn't the Mobil 1's fault.

Synthetic engine oil is great, it makes the car start easier when its cold and
lets my 190D go 10,000 miles between oil changes both of which in this cold
weather have been GREAT.
If you don't drive your Benz when its cold or can't (or don't want to) take
advantage of the long change interval then synthetic isn't a good choice for
you, there are plenty of very good conventional oils.

Synthetic grease, eh, whatever... I play with old snowmobiles, snowmobiles are
hard on grease. I tried some synthetic, it didn't seem to make any difference,
things were stiff until they warmed up a little just like with regular grease
and it disappeared with the exact same annoying regularity. Didn't seem like
I'd gained anything.

Gee, what happened to the - you must use synthetic - line? Surely this
must hold for grease as well as oil.

Is the factory MB grease synthetic? For what it is worth, I have been
using a red colored synthetic grease in
everything for the past few years. Don't know how good it is - a house
brand so hard to quantify perhaps - much
more expensive than the name brand non-synthetic stuff.

Not a chance. Florida roads only went North and South then, especially
rails. To ride from Ft. Lauderdale to Ocala means a trip to Tampa first, so
there must be some routes that do cross state now. I quit using Amtrak, as
much as I liked it, because to visit family meant middle of the night trips
to the train. Only Ocala arrival now is @ 3AM, departure about 4:30 AM. 40
years ago there were arrivals from S. Florida 3 - 4 times a day, during the
work day [I used to pick kids up there for camp]. I enjoy train travel, but
the schedules just didn't work for me.

Both Boston's South Station and NYC's Penn Station have good places

They cost almost exactly the same depending on what time of day you

For my honeymoon we took the train from Albany to Niagra Falls. It
took about 8 hours which is only a little more than it'd take you to
drive. I don't remember exactly but I don't think it was all that
expensive, around the same as flying I'd think. Again it was MUCH more
 comfortable...
Of course on that run flying is MUCH faster but that was October 1,

I love taking the train, but Amtrak is SO bad in the
midwest it is practically unbearable. 50 hours from Madison, WI to
 Deming,
NM. They have some good lines on th East coast, where I assume you

 every

My daughter and some of her friends decided they wanted to go to
Chicago over spring break last year. They thought the train sounded
like a fun way to get there. After 22 hours to get from Dallas to
Chicago, they all cashed in their return ticket and flew home. She
said it was the most miserable trip she'd ever taken.

European and Japanese rail systems are a great way to get around, but
AMTRAK in the midwest is a joke.

I can get up and get a snack in the cafe car, sure the prices are high but
theres no problem bringing your own food...
Both Boston's South Station and NYC's Penn Station have good places to eat
right in the train station. Logan has a couple good places, JFK and Laguardia
don't or at least not that I've found.

They cost almost exactly the same depending on what time of day you go. I see
no reason to EVER fly to NYC...

For my honeymoon we took the train from Albany to Niagra Falls. It took about 8 hours which is only a little more than it'd take you to drive. I don't remember exactly but I don't think it was all that expensive, around the same as flying I'd think. Again it was MUCH more comfortable...
Of course on that run flying is MUCH faster but that was October 1, 2001 and nothing was going to make my wife get on an airplane. Irrational I know but there you are.

I love taking the train, but Amtrak is SO bad in the
midwest it is practically unbearable. 50 hours from Madison, WI to Deming,
NM. They have some good lines on th East coast, where I assume you are
(Manhattan), but elsewhere it is awful. If I had to go from Kansas City
to South Carolina - I have to change trains in CHICAGO!! In almost every
case, flying is cheaper than the train, sadly.

No doubt Amtrak has issues, for this run its perfect though. It takes 3.5 hours
to go from Boston to Manhattan.
To fly takes 30 minutes but...
Arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before the flight.
Theres no point in arriving more than 15 minutes before the train...
The plane takes you into Queens, all my business is in Manhattan so thats at
LEAST a 40 minute cab ride.
I can plug in my laptop on the train, nevermind the fact that the seating area

you are making me want to go somewhere by train!

last time i went anywhere was like 20 years ago, from san jose, ca to
seattle. i kind of enjoyed it . they had some kind of very cheap
promo deal on that train from los angeles, so we played lots of
different card and tile games with people from the hood we would never
meet otherwise. i didn't like sleeping in the seat though. i think
if i had some kind of sleeper car, the trip would have been just
grand.

it sounds like some kind of speed test deal and nothing that any
passenger could possibly take advantage of

I'm going to call your bluff on this. Coast to coast by train in 24 hours?
That an average of over 100 mph assuming no stops. Where did this factoid
come from?

Never had a sleeper car. Would have been great from WI to NM, but was
 $800/person, if I remember correctly.

last time i went anywhere was like 20 years ago, from san jose, ca to
seattle. i kind of enjoyed it . they had some kind of very cheap
promo deal on that train from los angeles, so we played lots of
different card and tile games with people from the hood we would never
meet otherwise. i didn't like sleeping in the seat though. i think
if i had some kind of sleeper car, the trip would have been just
 grand.

Theres no point in arriving more than 15 minutes before the train...
The plane takes you into Queens, all my business is in Manhattan so
thats at LEAST a 40 minute cab ride.
I can plug in my laptop on the train, nevermind the fact that the
seating area is big enough that I can ACTUALLY USE my laptop.
I can get up and get a snack in the cafe car, sure the prices are high
but theres no problem bringing your own food...
Both Boston's South Station and NYC's Penn Station have good places to
eat right in the train station. Logan has a couple good places, JFK and
Laguardia don't or at least not that I've found.

They cost almost exactly the same depending on what time of day you
go. I see no reason to EVER fly to NYC...

For my honeymoon we took the train from Albany to Niagra Falls. It
took about 8 hours which is only a little more than it'd take you to
drive. I don't remember exactly but I don't think it was all that
expensive, around the same as flying I'd think. Again it was MUCH more
 comfortable...
Of course on that run flying is MUCH faster but that was October 1,
2001 and nothing was going to make my wife get on an airplane.
Irrational I know but there you are.

I love taking the train, but Amtrak is SO bad in the
midwest it is practically unbearable. 50 hours from Madison, WI to
 Deming,
NM. They have some good lines on th East coast, where I assume you are
(Manhattan), but elsewhere it is awful. If I had to go from Kansas
 City
to South Carolina - I have to change trains in CHICAGO!! In almost
 every
case, flying is cheaper than the train, sadly.

That's a thought. Coast of Lake Erie to the coast of Lake Superior? Gulf
Coast to Maine (Atlantic coast)?
