I compressed the pistons on both sides with a C-clamp, one side had quite a bit of clearance when I put the new pads/rotor on, the other one seemed compressed all the way (at least it would not go any further and there was not much of the pistons showing) but was a really tight fit (I had to

I was originally going to guess the cheap junk pads you'd bought cheap. I got a set from Car Quest (the better quality, red maybe?) for the rears my 190D and they were thick, took an awful long time for them to bed in. The last thing I ever bought from Q was a set of front pads for that car,
