I was originally going to guess the cheap junk pads you'd bought cheap. I got a
set from Car Quest (the better quality, red maybe?) for the rears my 190D and
they were thick, took an awful long time for them to bed in. The last thing I
ever bought from Q was a set of front pads for that car,
to get the 240D going a certain fat man will get the parts order.

I'm betting that wheel has a stuck/dragging caliper and that is why it was
metal to metal.. and where it's headed again...
Consider that. You may want to go back into that wheel for a rework..
