Pushing on things with a dowel and listening for changes to the noise can
help isolate the faulty bits.

I think the shocks last about half as long as the bearings, so odds are
good that the shock is bad, could be both.

So I’m wondering if it’s just a worn out shock? Everything as far as the idler

I remember this well from my 350SDL, and I recall your sharing your experiences
about it with me - thank you.

His is barely even chirping right now, but fortunately he mentioned it to me.
I loosened the belt on Saturday and checked everything, and there was minimal
slop in both the lever and idler pulley. I have given oldest son the “list ‘o’
parts” to procure and once he has them we’ll take care of it.

The arm(Lever) comes with the bearing as an assembly. I have a dead one
that someday I want to push the bearing out of and get a bearing
number. Then those that are inclined to can replace just the bearing.

Q was never able to find the bearing separately or a bearing number. I
have always had to buy the assembly.

Not to worry. They can rattle for years without causing any further
problems. Just an annoying rattle. I think you could take if off, push
out the bearing, turn it 45 to 135º, reassemble and everything would be
fine again. Since the arm oly turns a few degrees, the rollers wear
into the races, but by turning the bearing in the arm, you'd have
virtually unworn surfaces.
