anti-seize [available at about any FLAPS if you ask for it].
If you get a little on the cone seal, it's not going to hurt anything much.
Anti-seize will keep the threads from welding together over time and next
time you open
The gasket sets I've looked at all include the manifold gaskets.
Oil filter to block is a common leak point yes? I don't see a big leak there
now but I'd presume its at least easier to get at while doing the headgasket
and the gasket is probably cheap.

their gas charge and it was like riding with a rigid rear suspension (hard
and bumpy). Not good for the structure, either. Replacing them

Somehow the phrase meager budget does not mesh with W140.
The circa 2005 or later E-class diesel may be the sweet spot as far as MB
diesel quality for your money. Pay-out for a totaled E300 should be at least
$5k, which makes a nice down payment.

speaking of replacement MBs - I have always liked the lines of the
320CLK and 420CLK (I suspect the 320 is plenty of power) although it's a
shame they don't come in Diesels. Anyone have anything good/bad about
them? They don't seem to hold their value too well - not usually good

thing that irks me the most about the new Clean Diesel TDIs is the way
they configured the Late Post-Injection emissions control system such
that running BioDiesel isn't recommended,...
because of that, i can't look at a TDI after about MY2006.5.
