Those field rats are so accustomed to being honked at that they have
figgered out no harm comes to them if they ignore it.  So they ignore
the sound.
Some of them in WI are so accustomed to being around people that I
practically have to punch them in the nose to get them to move.   (close
enough I could punch it in the nose.)   It is easier to get a cow or a
horse to move than some of the field rats.   While others are wild and
spook easily.   If on foot, I usually see how close I get before they move.

As for the ones that graze contentedly at the edge of the road, I often
turn abruptly toward them to try to spook them.  It usually works, but
makes SWMBO mad.

For the last bunch of years, I have adopted the policy of sounding
the car horn from when I see the deer until I'm well past.
Clearly this is useless for any deer I don't see. It does help to
keep the friends and relations of the one I see from ending up in
front of the car.

However, it nearly always makes the deer move. If they are
strolling, they run. If standing in the ditch, usually move
away. Very rarely do any move toward the car. But sometimes
there are the ones that don't seem to notice - maybe they are deaf?

2019-12-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Last week buddy Zack shot what he thought was a doe (later turned out to be a
small antlered buck) that was hanging out with two other deer. The two other
deer moved about 100 yards off. When Zack approached the one he shot and
realized it was a buck (he still had a doe tag) he looked the other two over
with his field glasses and realized that one of them was a buck too and popped
it. Tried for the doe but she was smart enough to finally move off.
We figure he's improving the condition of the deer herd by weeding out the
stupidest ones.

Some deer just don't seem to care about noises that we think should scare the
crap out of them.
Like deer that mow the grass at the shooting range while you're using the
shooting range.

Reviews range from 'helps some of the time' to 'works great'.
Like the one review says, fleeing deer only care about the danger behind them,
not the danger in front of them.
One time we're driving along in broad daylight during deer season, and a
running doe comes towards the road at a 45 degree angle. Then she sees the
truck, and accelerates so she can cross directly in front of the truck. The
driver (not me) floored it to block her from running into the grille. She went
behind us, but she wasn't happy about it.

Reviews:
This is the third unit I have purchased. I've been using them for years; in my
opinion this reduces the chances of a deer strike by approx. 1/3rd. In other
words, one out of the next three deer that might have wandered in front of your
vehicle will no longer do so. So in a nutshell, definitely worth it if you
drive country roads like we dobut don't get overconfident. Adolescent deer
aren't smart enough to get out of the way yet (as if any deer are
smart).and if a deer is already on the moverunning from a predator or
gunshotthis won't stop it. This device stops the ones that are 'on the
fence' about crossing the road.

I live in an area with a ton of deer. Today i installed the deer alert system.
I drove down the road a
nd saw a small deer on the side of the road eating grass. I can hear the alert
system while driving while coming towards the deer. The deers ears perked up
when i got within 100ft in which i was at about 10mph seeing if the deer is
responding. Not sure if it worked. The deer slowly just walked back into the
woods. Didnt seem like it was rushing to get away from the noise from the
alarm. I gave it 3 stars but im thinking that that deer may have done the same
thing weather i had it on or off. It did however make the barn kittens fly back
into the barn when i drove by them which is good.

I own a pet sitting business in the country and have literally had several deer
run into in my black Honda Civic traveling back roads in the dark. I purchased
one of these, Hopkins 27512VA nVision Trailblazer Electronic Warning Devices,
for my black Honda Civic and have not had a deer run into mesSince purchasing
it. In fact, I have quite fun pulling up to a field of deer and turning it on
and watching them flip their tails up and run in the opposite direction.

I doubt either of Don's planes are rated for the stress of pulling out
of a steep dive close enough the sireen would scare the field rats.

Even P-51s shed their wings when the pilot attempted to pull out of a
steep dive.

Then there are the questions of availability and cost.

Maybe some form of low pressure air horn could be devised.  To use
airflow into the horn during flight, with an on -off valve of some
form.   Sort of a hvlp horn, rather than the normal hplv horn.

Hmm - wonder if you can see flame coming out of it? If so, how far? How
will it work into a 50 MPH wind?

A normal landing with the throttle at idle doesn't bother them. Buzzing
them at 50 feet or so does cause them to leave the runway, at least long

The Hornet Electronic Deer Avoidance System

The Hornet uses the LATEST MILITARY TECHNOLOGY to clear your way.

The Hornet is your best protection against costly and deadly animal
related accidents. Using the latest military technology from the
field of high pitched, directional sonic bombardment, the Hornet's
precision turned sonic generator alerts deer and other animals of
your approach well before they can see or hear your vehicle.
Proprietary wave variance tuning enables the sonic impulse to carry
long distances. The Hornet is endorsed by major insurance companies
and is used by police and emergency vehicles nationwide with millions
of proven road miles. Proven effective at any speed, the Hornet is
electronically powered and does not rely on wind or air flow.

According to the website:

The device gets the deers' attention. They flee when they see
something moving toward them. If the device is running
continuously, they get used to it and don't respond.

I would think a flying airplane should make enough noise to get their
attention and since it is moving toward them, it should be enough.
>From what I infer from Don's comment, however, it isn't.

If you rigged up something like is used to illuminate unattended
airports' runways (a double-click of the aircraft's mic) and turned on
the devices mounted on a stationary stand (or stands) as you approached,
it might work.

Probably just a simple explanation for Andrew's deranged wabbits.
Probably comes from living in the swamp.

Invasive plagues?

Maybe relates to climate change, but I have noted an increase is
nature attacking. There was a story in the paper about a deer out
clubbing in the nightlife district a few weeks ago. Middle of
downtown, rollicking Friday night around 1am with drunks, hookers,
club bands causing a ruckus, and Bambi is right at home.

Last summer had a massive incursion of fluffy tail wabbits with no
fear of humans. Middle of the day hopping slowly and munching on
gardens. Nights were worse, with marauding packs of the beasties on
sidewalks and streets. Beady little eyes all aglow when you hit them
with headlights. And all manner of raised gardens enclosed in wire cages.

A few years before was the plague of snails. Non native sort. Escaped
from chinese flower pots? I had not seen the sort in 40 years of
playing in the gardens. Slugs abounded, but these new mollusks were
gathered in crowds under all sorts of shaded areas. Lots of weird
shell designs, makes you think they were following the gender confused
vibe.

Now, I am seeing a creeping moss overtake the gardens and walk ways.
This stuff is not the slow growth type that I would pressure wash
every decade or so as it slowly thickened. The new stuff is fast
growing, velvet smooth and not the emerald greens of the native type,
but a vibrant kelly green. Comes on in mats on pavement and retaining
walls. In two months! Very much like the plague of disposed junkies
and other un-homed in Seattle.

good on him!    I let a guy hunt that was amazing. he and his pre teen
daughter would sneak up on deer and turkeys and shoot them with a bow.
AFIK, no indigenous ppl blood, but he sure hunted like a sioux!

My buddy Zack is doing his best to help out. He shot his 3rd and 4th
deer today. Culling the population you might say.
He's amazing, he'll find a fresh track in the snow and run the deer
down. Any time I've tried that I end up spending the day walking in
circles with the deer laughing at me...
