When you part it out, sell the tranny, shifter, pedal assembly, drive shaft etc as a package deal, will bring BIG money. kevin kraly wrote: Tomorrow, I'm going to look at a manny tranny 1983 240D that's been run out of oil. Wish I'd seen this post earlier. Yup I need a part or two for my 83 240D. Right off the bat I can think of the ashtray (if it has the lighter in it). I have a big stack of starters. Not sure what to do with them as most people buy new ones. Tarek Elshenawy wrote: If you're willing to part with the starter and master cylinder, let me know. Re: [MBZ] anyone need 240D parts?
Well, probably - as you surely have more knowledge than I at this. I was just thinking of the ashtray - the deal that can be pulled out by depressing that metal tab and just removing the ashtray - as if you wanted to empty it. This, I thought, contains the area where the lighter used to mount (on the L side). Only the assy. that the lighter would plug into is gone. So I'm assuming that there was some assy. pulled out, and the lighter unit itself came with it. Can you expand on what you mean by mounting frame? Or am I correct in assuming that if I get the unit that pulls out by depressing the metal tab, I have gotten all that I need, and I can simply place it in, and the lighter should be operational provided none of the electric circuit has been altered? I see a little metal tab on the far left that would seem to provide the current to the lighter assy.? It comes into contact with the ashtray as it opens. Aren't you glad you asked? Re: [MBZ] anyone need 240D parts?
Can you expand on what you mean by mounting frame? It has a sliding wiper track on the side for the ashtray proper to contact, and has two screws that hold it in. It plugs in to the car's wiring harness. I thought I remembered that you'd said it was also missing, but it sounds like that's not right. Or am I correct in assuming that if I get the unit that pulls out by depressing the metal tab, I have gotten all that I need, and I can simply place it in, and the lighter should be operational provided none of the electric circuit has been altered? Sounds right. Use a meter to see if the metal track (or is it a tab that hits a track on the ashtray?) is 'hot' with the key on. You need to be sure you get the right ashtray, is your interior wood-faced or plastic? -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] anyone need 240D parts?
Jim, it appears to be a tab that is mounted to the console. It appears to be copper. I'll have to go downstairs and look more closely at the side of the ash tray and see if there's a metal track on it for the tab to slide along. I believe it does make contact when the ashtray is pulled open past a certain point. So overall, it just seems that there ought to be some sort of cradle for the lighter to plug into. Instead, there is just sort of a division in the plastic space there where it apparently used to be. And there are a few small square or rectangular holes there - to accept plastic snap-type hooks?? I'm guessing now. Yes, mine is the woodgrain type. Sheesh, if it wasn't for my woodgrain, I'd have nothing but the star in the hood to allow me to claim that I have a luxury car. I'm going down to the car now anyway so I'll take a closer look at the things so I can speak more intelligently on it. Re: [MBZ] anyone need 240D parts?
this point is plastic. There must be a metal piece that comes up over or under the plastic side of the ashtray to meet that tab - and it must come with the lighter base. Sounds like somebody butchered your ashtray. It's not supposed to come apart, though it does (to a point) in order that you can change the light bulb. Easy enough to get another used one. -- Jim

(other than one silver door), with beige interior. If you're interested in any parts, let me know. If inexpensive enough, the missing AC parts for our never-left-home teenager of a 240D are suddenly a lot more interesting than they were. Yesterday I recharged the AC on a couple of our daily drivers. They have slow leaks, the recharging is an annual rite. About $7 each. 90+degree temps in May? Two weeks ago I was still building heating fires. Unbelievable. If it [Albatross] stays with us long enough and the U-Pull coughs up a donor it may get fixed anyway. -- Jim
