Re: [meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk
Hi Linda, and Michael - Did you bid or purchase from a seller(s) on eBay? Did it happen to be either a seller called .a., or jevgenijss? Besides Mike Farmer, I've purchased from both of these sellers more than once (I'm speaking of Chelyabinsk specifically right now) and have had no problems whatsoever with either. The seller, .a. works with a dependable, and trustworthy fellow who lives in the Chelyabinsk region who goes around buying pieces from the locals as well as finding his own specimens. Since he ships them directly from Chelyabinsk when they are sold by .a. on eBay, it does take as much as 4 weeks or more to receive a package coming out of Russia ( almost a week or longer from Chelyabinsk to Moscow alone ) due to their antiquated, and extremely inefficient, postal system. If you did buy from .a. ( his real name is Michael, or his mother, Maria) did you receive a tracking number? I found him very professional, extremely personable, and above board, as well as his partner in Russia. Don't know if you purchased from either of these two I've mentioned, but if you did, I'm just trying to reassure you things should be fine. The specimens I purchased from .a. (aka Michael) for instance (since they were coming directly out of Russia and Chelyabinsk took 26 days to arrive safely in my hands. I purchased them on March 6, and didn't get the parcel until April 1. If it was .a. whom you purchased from, don't worry, he's got your back 100% if something should happen to your parcel and it doesn't make before the shipment arrival window expires as given on eBay. Did you read my little write up on the list a few days ago of how I got my specimens out of Russia? They were extremely well hidden/disguised to be smuggled out of Russia safely past unsuspecting Russian postal employees and customs officials who may have prying eyes and sticky figures at times. I wrote a longer (much too long) piece with photos that I sent to those on the list that asked for more details. If you're interested ( and like to read long tedious write-ups ), I'll email you a copy. At least the photos are worth it if not the narrative itself. :-) Wishing you good fortune - Mal IMCA#6819 On 4/5/2013 6:48 PM, Linda Barany wrote: I received the one from Finland in a very timely manner. I have been in contact with the owner and he has already stated that if I open a case he will pay for the stone. I am going to wait another week first. I'm quite sure the sender is not at any fault. Re: [meteorite-list] Chelybinsk eBay price history
Hi Mike, Rob, and all - Well , I for one dealt with this seller (the one Rob mentions -- i.e. seller name .a.) plus one other from whom I purchased from in the past and have a GOOD history with, while the other was just on a whim/chance. Both came through excellently ( more than once) with the Chelyabinsk specimens I bid or purchased out-right. eBay seller .a. ( real name Michael ) and I have communicated numerous times and is extremely professional, friendly, and timely in all our communications. Michael ( .a. ) has evidently a very reliable, educated professional fellow, whom he has worked with for years dealing in Soviet era electronics, etc. (so they evidently know each other very well), going around the area in the strewnfield purchasing pieces from locals and shipping them out directly to the winning bidders while Michael handles the eBay (and money part) here in the U.S. -- specifically, California. I was very satisfied with Michael (aka .a. ) and the other seller on eBay I've been dealing with. I have purchased from 3 sources (including our own illustrious Michael Farmer ) and all the specimens I've obtained look identical inside and out. I do agree that the antiquated Russian postal service along with the iffy customs inspectors ( I was told many are ex Soviet era officials, etc. -- read KGB, and so on) make it a sitting on pins and needles sort of ordeal waiting for your parcel to arrive. It took one of my small packets from Chelyabinsk 25 days to arrive. I had a tracking number, but after the almost week long transit from Chelyabinsk to Moscow, and after it was shown to arrive at customs and 2 minutes later leaving customs, there were no further updates for 15 days. Neither the Russian postal service website, nor the U.S. postal service website showed any further updates until finally on the 24th day it magically appeared again on the USPS website showing it at our local sorting facility in Columbia, South Carolina -- before arriving at my local post office the next morning. The guy in Russia working for eBay seller, .a. does however have a very interesting way of hiding/camouflaging the little space rock treasures from potential sticky fingered customs agents and/or postal employees. I will say, it is EXTREMELY clever and smart of him. Michael ( .a.) told me this guy has many years of experience shipping out of Russia and knows a thing or two regarding how to smuggle things out of Russia and circumvent the officials that may not be so much on the up and up when it comes to performing their trusted and honored duties! I won't mention any details on the list openly regarding how the rocks were hidden from curious, prying eyes out of respect for the seller and his partner, but if anyone wants to know, contact me off list and I may tell you. :-) Not only do I have the rocks which were mailed directly out of Russia from Chelyabinsk ( with the registered mail packaging appropriately stamped and showing its point of origin), I also have the devices used to hide and smuggle the rocks safely out of Mother Russia. They are prominently displayed ( with the piece of glass and photos Mike Farmer sent with the VERY nice specimen I purchased from him) along with my several specimens of Chelyabinsk. What a story will be waiting for family and friends when they ask why I have these obviously/disparate/, out of//place items displayed along with meteorites. Re: [meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk - Hammers for sure.
Michael, and all - How would you know beyond a CERTAIN reasonable doubt that it is a hammer by the common accepted definition as followed by most ( at least on this list)? With all of the media coverage from the Internet to cable television programming, there are so many more people that are not only aware of meteorites but also the usually misguided (as well as extremely over-inflated perception) of the cash value any given fall ( or find) will bring to the one you recovers or deals in said rocks, no? And with this being said, how would anyone, even one of our illustrious hunters such as Mike Farmer, know with 100% reasonable certainty that a recovered meteorite indeed hit a person, animal, or man-made object when many of these stones are small, low mass specimens (i.e. than a few grams ) with many only 3 or 4 grams and much less in mass (many 1 gram or less) being recovered in very open, rural areas. What's to stop those unscrupulous, greedy types from finding many of the specimens dug from the snow covered countryside and picked up from frozen lakes/ponds, taking them, posing them on or near any given object, snapping a photo, and then claiming it hit their house, car, tractor, cow, what have you? Even with a signed affidavit, and photos galore, in the end, it's still someone's word and that is all. Especially with so many smaller, lighter pieces, would they even leave any physical evidence they hit an object, any object other than the ground? I mean leave dents, holes, fragmented pieces of the stone itself embedded in the object showing it may have indeed caused the said damage from impact as the owner/recoverer may try to persuade a perspective buyer/dealer? I wouldn't necessarily think so. Sure, larger stones with mass would, as proven in the past with several well known falls, but I feel this fall with all of its WORLD WIDE notoriety would be a hard one to convince someone ( speaking here of me specifically I guess) that for sure it hit anything other than Terra firma itself. ...and taking a strangers word -- who knows ( or thinks they know) what a meteorite will fetch monetarily, and what one that hits a man made object would fetch as being even more. I would be very skeptical. I'm not dissing anyone for their love of hammers and the importance they may place on a specific stone from a fall for it hit something deemed special while another stone from the same fall just hit dirt, but to me, any meteorite fall (especially freshly witnessed falls that are soon collected after their sudden deceleration ) are all important and cherished -- doesn't have to have hit anything special -- just the fact it came from above to now become obtainable (when before it was unobtainable by anyone other than NASA) by little me on this little planet is good enough! I guess I'm trying to state the fact that now due to so much awareness by the world at large of meteorites -- through the popularity gained from so much media exposure with the advent of modern communication technology made so available to so many -- this is beginning to become a problematic issue from here on. Except for the few exceptional cases that will undoubtedly arise here and there, I would state that the true, but well worn adage, /Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence/ ( as one of my personal heroes, Carl Sagan was fond of saying) really applies when it comes to the term hammer. I'll will close with the claim I've been know to be wrong, called ignorant, and uninformed, and I will go back quietly, and peacefully to my sweet hiding place in my little corner of the world. Re: [meteorite-list] PBS NOVA Program, Meteor Strike (tonight: 3/27/13)
Hi Shawn, Robert, Martin, and all -- I may be totally wrong, but my understanding is this is a different program since it is a production of WGBH Boston producers of PBS programming such as NOVA, and since they mention they sent their NOVA crews to Russia shortly after the fall to document the event from all aspects. WGBH is PBS’s single largest producer of Web and TV content -- they produce programming such as NOVA,**Frontline, etc. so i think this is an entirely new and separate entity from the one Martin has pointed out. ...but maybe they used portions of the programing Martin is pointing out, or there was a collaboration, or PBS/ETV here in the US is in partnership with Channel 4 (UK), or whatever. It's hard keeping up with global corporate entities and their intermingling anymore. Our once seemingly large planet is getting very small very quickly in many ways these days. So many corporations have ties with each other world wide who knows what is what anymore. I tried to do a little investigating to see if there was a tie in to what Martin pointed out and see if Channel 4 and PBS (and WGBH Boston) had connections, but I couldn't determine anything one way or the other with the little time I had to investigate. Maybe one of our members can clear this up for all of us? Since 1995, I have prepared reports estimating the value of each meteorite in my collection. The results were a true snapshot of each year's market values and gave me an idea of over-all trends in price, availability and popularity. In 2005, realizing this work would benefit others, I began offering a more comprehensive report at a modest price to collectors and dealers with average retail values for 85 different meteorites. I expanded the survey to 121 meteorites in 2008. For 2011, I covered 185 species of meteorites plus the prices of their 'permutations', i.e. whether specimens were individuals, slices or fragments. This treasure is growing so exponentially year in and year out, from decade to decade, that it is actually rather breath-taking if one thinks about it for a moment -- truly synergistic. The ability to put the love of learning, discovery, and expanding not only ones boundaries, but to help instill the same passions in others is a remarkable human trait and this group of people on our list have it in bucket fulls! Thanks again for taking the time and putting in the amount of work that it took to see to fruition a project such as the one you have so carefully, and lovingly, put together for all of us space rock devotees! This goes for all of you who have taken the time, and have the talents and skills, to put together something -- no matter what the form -- that adds something which enrichens the experience for us all. I'm not particularly talented at writing, nor articulate enough to put in written, or spoken, word what I truly wish to express, but I do wholeheartedly thank everyone whom I have dealt with in our community. Whether being to add another treasure from the outer-sphere to my collection, or the chance to obtain a new book full of exciting tales of exploration, and wonderful words of wisdom -- given out from example and experience, or mined from the dust of time long ago that was once new and fresh to the then explorers of their time. Unfortunately, many of us, me included, have to do our traveling and exploring via books, or websites due to our particular circumstances and individual situations in life -- but thanks to people like you, we can all share in this grand adventure together through your efforts, and all the other good folks, that make it happen for us all! So many wonderful books have been authored thus far, but many, many more are waiting there turn to come out of the minds of so many talented people. So many great websites devoted to our particular interest have been created. So many dedicated people doing so many incredible, and not so ordinary, work just out of the pure joy, desire, love, and the fundamental desire and thrill to know why about something, and then share what they have gleamed from their eureka moments with the rest of us, the chosen who saw the light from above -- literally in many instances! Please forgive my corny, over-sentimentalized minor treatise, but I just felt like it. :-) My most heartfelt regards to all my fellow travelers of both time and space, Mal __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] Impressive Viewer Interactive HD Curiosity Camera.
Hi Count, That is most impressive ...and much fun as well to pan left, right in 360 as well as 180 up and down. Do you have a link back to JPL/NASA on the particulars of the imaging -- in other words, how it was actually pieced together, etc. I find it very interesting how you can see the shadow of the mast on the ground, but when you pan around on Curiosity itself there is no sign of the extended mast, nor even a sign of a point of origin from which the photos were taken. It is as if the point of origin for the photos were taken out away from the MSL -- a virtual point of origin I guess you could say? My simple mind would be very much interested in how this was constructed in the manner in which it was so excellently conceived and carried out. Maybe I'm really out-to-lunch, but I just see no signs of the mast, not even the base of it where it attaches to the rover. You can look straight down to where the mast should be and there is no sign of it -- just completely edited out. Something else, the crater floor is amazingly smooth, and boulder free just like you would expect from an impact result flattening the area inside (except for the central peak --rebound effect ) of an impact crater with all of the debris (large rocks, boulders, and dirt/soil that was excavated during impact ) to have been deposited out beyond the the crater floor at the crater rim and many miles beyond. Most wondrous!!! Thanks! Mal On 8/17/2012 2:23 AM, Count Deiro wrote: Hello Listees, Be able to interact with the HD image is as realistic as it gets. Hi Mendy and list at large, Hi Mendy, Yes, I know what he was probably trying to say, but he misunderstood like you said. But then again, if he doesn't know quartz from a (real) meteorite he may not know the difference from grams and milligrams, possible, yes? Re: [meteorite-list] Robert Burnham
Dear Steve, Your message to the list regarding Robert Burnham and your relationship with him (as well as yours and Robert's relationship with Harvey Nininger, and Glenn Huss ) is a TRUE treasure and was a marvel to read! It is very interesting, and exciting, to know there is someone on our list who had known Robert personally as well as having the most enviable opportunity to work with such a stellar ( pun intended ) -- though a most under appreciated -- scholar/scientist of his time. I would love to read more of your times with Robert, Harvey, Glenn, and more on you and your remarkable career if at all possible. Have you thought perhaps to pen a book or publish papers/documents of your own history (i.e., photos, personal letters, receipts of purchases, and other relevant stories you have collected over a long career and passionate hobby , etc. )? I'm not trying to be presumptuous nor invade your privacy, but I'm sure there are many on our list that would agree with my sentiments on this! Well, I for one would be most appreciative of anything you see fit and are willing to share with us on the list regarding your experiences such as the one you just so kindly shared -- with your time and good graces approving! Kind regards, Mal On 6/24/2012 1:03 PM, Steve Schoner wrote: I happened to go through my old mybluelight account, which I still see is up, even though I canceled my account with them I noticed Message 21 on June 12th 2012, which I have attached at the bottom of my rely. I worked with Robert Burnham at Lowell Observatory from 1971 to 1974. I remember him as a very shy withdrawn man small house on Lowell Observatory grounds. I spent quite a few times with him after working with him and Norm Thomas on the Proper Motion Program where we cataloged various stars that had motions as seen against more distant stars. This involved using the blink comparator, the very thing that Clyde Tombaugh used in making the historic discovery of Pluto, the no so called Dwarf Planet (I still think it a full Planet though). That aside, as a person Robert Burnham was a very intelligent man. Among one of the smartest persons I have ever known. He knew how to read Egyptian hieroglyphics, had an avid interest in Abraham Lincoln, and was a virtual walking library when it came to the stars above. One could at night point out specific stars and he could tell you everything about them. And I remember the many nights we spent observing the stars using those great refracting telescopes at Lowell. One night in particular sticks in my mind to this very day. The opposition of Mars in 1971. We used the apochromatic refractor to observe mars in absolutely clear sky virtually free of any turbulence. No winds that night, and it seemed the air extremely tranquil, as if the air was not even there. The view of Mars was extraordinary, and as Robert and I observed the planet directly it was as if it were the size of a tennis ball at arms length. And that night, it was the only night like this, we could actually see over several hours that we observed Martian clouds drifting over the surface. I took several photos of it, with my 35mm single lens reflex at prime focus, but they are no where near what we saw with our eyes that night. Robert remarked, that he had never seen Mars so clearly as that one night. And to this day I have not seen another night like it. Robert was a genius, and knew his stars, and on his own time spent over 20 years putting together his handbook. I bought one of his hand bound Celestial Handbooks from him in 1972, It came in sections, as he then did not have a publisher. I have the first very thick ring bound installment, but not the rest. His meteorite collection I remember fondly. I went over to his abode many times to see it and his big collection of ancient artifacts from Egypt, and some items from the Abe Lincoln era. (If I recall he even had some notes that were attributed to that President). But it was the meteorites that really interested me, all obtained from our mutual friend Harvey Nininger. Meteor Crater irons, stones from Kansas, falls and finds. And during that time we both were in contact with Nininger and Huss, often sharing items in our collections and buying from them at the time. And the prices then were but pennies per gram, and I remember the days when the packages would arrive at Lowell, and we would open them at get our specimens from the Nininger-Huss lab (American Meteorite Laboratory) up in Denver. Harvey Nininger was living up in Denver wit Glenn and Margaret Huss at the time. I bought several specimens from Robert Burnham's collection that he got from Nininger's original lab in Sedona (American Meteorite Museum), which closed in 1961. I will have to look through my collection I bought a pieces of Rolla, Gilgoin, Monahans (iron), Clover Springs, Covert, Pasamonte. All of these came direct from Harvey
Re: [meteorite-list] Is there any religion that invites.... (Burnham's Meteorites?)
Looks like he's holding a specimen in his hand as well, yes? I'd love to know of the disposition of his collection as well. I like you, Mike, would give a portion of my anatomy for one of Robert Burnham's meteorite samples as well. If you or anyone has a clue please keep me in the loop as well PLEASE! After Kevin whetted my appetite when announcing he was selling his set of Burnham's Celestial Handbook ( I missed out on the ones he was selling), I went directly to eBay and purchased a hardcover set in very good condition to add to my library. Don't know why I hadn't purchased a set long, long ago. As much as I love astronomy and books, it just defies me why I didn't have Robert's work in my collection till now. Re: [meteorite-list] Stefan Ralew and Martin Altman kicked out of IMCA for illegal activities
Dear Met List, IMCA, and Naveen, All I can say as of this moment in time is that I'm just completely and utterly SHOCKED and completely dismayed!!! I've dealt with Martin in the past (as so many have who read my post) and had nothing but the highest respect and regards for him as a dealer and a person! I just don't understand this at all!!! My heart actually raced as I read Anne's then Naveen's posts ...I'm still shaking as I try to type this post! Nothing more can I say, but if someone like Martin is involved in deception of this order and magnitude, it REALLY makes it hard to believe or trust in anyone involved in our passion! This has lowered my expectations in others to an even lower level than I could have expected!!! I don't want to believe any of this, but if the IMCA went to the extraodinary step of removing members in such a manner, I guess there must be irrefutable proof and extremely substantial evidence!!! With incredulous, and again, most shocked dismay, Mal On 8/1/2011 9:57 PM, Naveen Jain wrote: I just got the conformation from president of IMCA, Anne Black, that Stefan Ralew and Martin Altman are no longer member of IMCA. As you may already know, Stefan and Martin were systematically engaged in mail fraud and wire fraud. I was one of their many victims and decided to file a complaint against them with IMCA since they were both members of IMCA. Martin Altman had lured me in by lots of stuff by telling me that he was a board member of IMCA and I can return anything that I don't want or like. I have to thank IMCA board members for their diligent effort in investigating the complaint. IMCA board members unanimously concluded that Stefan and Martin needed to honor their obligations and act ethically as a member of IMCA. IMCA board laid out options for Stefan and Martin to honor their obligation. They were essentially asked to stop engaging in unethical and illegal behavior. See below is my official complaint to IMCA. As I said, IMCA thoroughly investigated the complaint and IMCA board unanimously voted to force them to honor their obligation of full refund. I strongly suspect that Stefan and Martin either sent me the either fake or low quality meteorite and were afraid to give the refunds for the garbage that they sold me under deceit and fraud of promising full refund with clear intent of not honoring the obligation. I am sending this note to warn all meteorite collectors to watch out so they don't become their next victim. I will be happy to provide more details if anyone wants it. I have consulted my legal counsel and probably will file lawsuit to avoid them from profiting from their illegal activities. I may also contact my friends at FBI to investigate their mail and wire fraud scam. - Original Message - From: I.M.C.A. I specifically asked him if I will be able to return any item that I didn't like and he said that it's their normal practice and part of the German consumer protection law (see email from him below). The return policy on their website also clearly states the same i.e. a customer can return any item within 30 days for a full refund. i contacted them within 24 hours of my receiving the items that I want to return 2 of the 9 specimens that I received. They are now refusing to return the item and refund my money. I am now being told that I am somehow a business customer and my order that was sold from their stock as shown on their website is somehow a custom order because it was packed for shipping to US. I will like to refund everything to them if they have problem returning 2 out of 9 orders. I have a new, unread copy of 'Field Guide to Meteors and Meteorites' by O. Richard Norton and Lawrence A. Chitwood on eBay. [meteorite-list] *** AD *** Large, Gorgeous Campo del Cielo Iron with coin, display case and more
A month ago I offered up for sell a 10,820g Campo del Cielo iron to the list. Although I had a few bites, in the end nothing gelled; therefore, I'll try one more time. Again, it's a 10.82kg ( approximately 24 pounds) Campo of AAA quality with deep pits, nice regmaglypts overall, and just a nicely sculpted piece. It is a very exquisite example of Campo and very, very stable! Campos this nice seem to lean more to the rare side of the scale, and those that know me and have purchased from me in the past know I don't lightly suggest something is nice, or exquisite unless it were so. I will include along with the Campo del Cielo meteorite a Campo commemorative coin/medallion (numbered), a handsome display case with a wood/acrylic base and acrylic cover, an iron meteorite element set showing examples of the 5 main elements which make up a typical iron meteorite, and 2 limited edition Campo del Cielo 3-D stamps (including 3-D glasses) printed/ issued in Buenos Aires, Argentina in their unopened shrink wrapped packaging . ... and of course, I'll also include the meteorite display info card and the 8.5 x 11 inch COA (certificate of authenticity) issued by the dealer I purchased it from a couple of years ago. BTW, the COA is gorgeous as well and very suitable for framing! I was asking $1800 for all of the items listed above which did not include the cost of shipping or insurance. However, I'm lowering the asking price to $1700, and I'm offering to pay the postage and insurance within the United States -- if someone internationally wants it, we'll have to discuss the shipping costs and come to some mutual agreement since shipping overseas costs much more than if shipping within the USA. I initially paid $2100 for the rock alone . The case and coin together were around another $150, the element set another $40 ...so all told this is basically a deal that cost me over $2300 when all totaled with shipping costs, etc. which someone can now have for $1700 total and complete (I believe in full disclosure -- not trying to make a profit, just pay bills) ! This is a steal of a deal -- I don't understand why really nice Campos don't seem to get the respect and admiration I feel they deserve! I'll send photos to anyone SERIOUSLY interested in talking deal. I can easily say this is one of my more favorite irons I've had in my collection since I started collecting in 1994. I wouldn't even be considering the selling of it (and now I'm basically letting it go for a song and dance especially with all of the extra goodies I'm offering with it) if it weren't for being out of work and mounting debt, etc.! Believe me, whosoever is the new owner of this piece will be more than highly satisfied and I think very proud to call it their own as they proudly put it up for display!!! Regards to all, Mal P.S. [meteorite-list] AD: METEORITE and VOYAGE! Magazines -- OUT OF PRINT ISSUES
I was going through some stuff and found 18 meteorite related magazines I had stashed away and basically forgot about -- 3 issues of VOYAGE! magazine which were published by John Walters and staffed by Michael Blood, Fred Hall, Hal Povenmire, and Ken Regelman, and 15 issues of METEORITE magazine of which 5 are still in their shipping bags unopened. Also, one of the VOYAGE! magazines is still in its mailing envelope and also has never been opened. The remaining 13 issues are in almost PRISTINE condition -- I mean no marks, no tears, no bends, no dog-eared corners -- as nearly perfect as the day they were printed and mailed out! All are in exceptional condition except for the issue of Meteorite! Feb. 1999, Vol. 5, No. 1 which has a very slight (and hardly noticeable) water stain at the very bottom on a few of the pages. It also has a few indentation marks on the front cover and a small ink mark or two on the front cover as well However, other than a couple of superficial flaws as I mentioned, it is like brand new otherwise. You'll have to trust me on this. I think everyone who has dealt with me in the past knows I'm as good as my word, and you can trust me when I say these magazines are exquisite! For those that are relatively new to the list, you can go to the Meteorite mag's website:http://meteoritemag.uark.edu/515.htm to look at the descriptions of the back issues I have listed here. If you wish for me to send scanned images of the ones I am personally offering, I'll do so, but it will take a little time to get back. I wish to sell all 18 magazines to someone and get this over with ( I don't want to go through what I did a few weeks ago when I was selling some of my rocks. I inadvertently ticked off a couple of people, and visa-a-versa) so I'll try and make this tempting to someone. I've seen these OUT OF PRINT issues go anywhere from $25 per issue to over $40 or more on eBay and elsewhere. I'll let all 18 issues go for $300 plus priority mailing ( which will be in a flat rate priority mail box and be $10.35 -- plus delivery confirmation for another $0.65 -- in the US of A). The cost per issue for all 18 is like $16.66 if all are purchased at once by someone like this. I'd like to sell them all to the first hard offer of $300, but if no one wants them all for $300 then I'll sell them for $20 per issue. I'll hold out for a while to give someone a chance to purchase all 18 before breaking it down to individual issues. Come on, someone give me $300 and then take them, mark them up, and sell them on eBay or whatever, and make a profit if you don't want to keep them for yourself! :-) The issues are as follows: Meteorite! Feb. 1999, Vol. 5, No. 1 Meteorite! May 1999, Vol. 5, No. 2 Meteorite! Aug. 1999, Vol. 5, No. 3 Meteorite! Nov. 1999, Vol. 5, No. 4 Meteorite! Feb. 2000, Vol. 6, No. 1 Meteorite! Re: [meteorite-list] Items for sale
To everyone interested, This is my second AD in as many days, but since I haven't posted an ad in a year or more, I figured I had some good behavior merits built up. :-) Anyway, I'm making everything I want to sell available for all to see (whether you want to or not :-) ) -- what I paid, what I would like to get, and who I purchased each item from. I'm only doing this because of my rather dire circumstances! I realize I'm not the only in this boat (quickly becoming cruise liner size it appears), and I truly wish each one of you well in all of your endeavors and daily lives!!! I recently lost my job (not the only one in that boat I know) and I'm a single parent raising my 10 year old son, Gabriel ( we lost his mother to a traffic accident 3.5 years ago), so since I was the only bread winner I had to make a hard decision and start selling these gifts from above that Gabriel and I both cherish so much! Hopefully you will see something you would like to add to your collection. I am still willing to negotiate a little on prices within reason, but as you can see, I've come down an incredible amount from what I initially paid for the stuff! I also have several meteorite related things to offer such as coins, an iron meteorite element set, and a few books left I will part with. The list of books and such will be ready shortly for those interested. As usual, and customary, I will send photos of any item(s) you may wish to see. [meteorite-list] *** AD *** Many Top-Notch Specimens (and books) For Offer
Folks, *** Sorry if this email made it to the list once already, but I wasn't sure if my 1st attempt to send this email got through or not *** Many of you who have been on this list for a long time know that I very rarely have a sale. Since my interest in meteorites is being slowly, but surely, over-shadowed by other and much more important matters I've decided to sell of part of my collection. I need to liquidate a good portion of my collection -- so I'm offering the following specimens and books all priced to go hopefully very quickly. I'm not interested in making a profit off of anything listed; in fact, I'm offering EVERYTHING for substantially less than what I paid for them. All specimens are of the highest quality and I'm most certain everyone who collects meteorites would agree with my statement upon examining them. I purchased all of my specimens from the top name dealers in our hobby. A majority of these meteorites come with a beautiful COA that one dealer in particular prides himself on and I will attest these COAs are almost as impressive as the specimen itself! I pride myself on how I care for my collection over the years and all specimens have been kept in display cases with desiccant dehumidifiers and VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) corrosion inhibitors. I have photos of many of these specimens taken by one well known dealer ( when I purchased them from him ) who is highly praised for his photography among many other things. I will email his photo ( plus if anyone wants a current photo of the specimen I've taken ) of any specimen anyone may be interested in. As per custom, I will of course supply the accompanying dealer ID card with each specimen, and if anyone wishes, a copy of the invoice showing what I paid for any given piece to further evidence how I've priced to quickly sell. As far as the books go, they are all either in mint condition to very good, and also priced to go fast! I even have a couple of catalogs, one from 1992 and the other from 1997, published by the modern-era king of meteorites himself, Bob Haag ( I say this to differentiate Bob from the all time king, Harvey Nininger). If Harvey was the Father of American Meteoritics, then certainly Bob is the son! I even have a collector's limited edition catalog from the notorious Michael Casper published in 2000. The catalog has a published price of $25, of course that stays in step with Michael's somewhat inflated ego as most would agree. This compared to the very humble and unassuming Bob whose catalogs had no price published on them, but did have a price listed in his literature of the time of something like $12 if memory serves. Anyway, the Casper catalog is mint while Bob's are very good as far as covers are concerned showing some minor wear with age, but the interiors are in emaculate condition. I even have a couple of Bob's price lists from the day (pre-Internet when people actually sent such things via postal service :-) ). The price on these catalogs and price lists are somewhat negotiable, but due to their rarity and condition, I'm not letting them go for free. Following is a partial list of what I'm offering: METEORITES: Ghubara, full slice, 374.4g Belle Plaine, full slice, 378.4g -- from Monnig collection Sikhote-Alin, individual, 1,844g Campo del Cielo (silicated), full slice, 45.0g Campo del Cielo, etched full slice, 390g Seymchan (siderite), full slice, 230.7g Canyon Diablo, individual, 2,713g Dimmitt, full slice, 38.0g -- from Monnig Collection Brenham, part slice, 175.5g Sayh al Uhaymir 001 (SAU 001), oriented individual, 362.2g -- plus 10 or so other specimens BOOKS: Disturbing The Solar System -- Alan E. Rubin Meteorites and Their Parent Planets -- Harry Y. McSween, Jr. The Robert Haag Collection of Meteorites (Private Collection Edition) Rocks from Space (2nd edition) -- O. Richard Norton -- plus 6 or more titles Like I said, this is only a partial list of meteorites and books I'm willing to sell. If anyone is interested, email for photos, prices, details, etc. I'm willing to haggle a little over price, but not much for I'm already willing to let MOST everything go for less than what I paid by a fare margin! I'll get back to any inquires as soon as I can, but I'll be tied up doing some other things besides sitting at the computer all weekend, so just please bare with me. [meteorite-list] AD: BASSIKOUNOU Fragments For Sale @ $2.50/gram!
Dear list members, As I mentioned last week in an email to the group, I said I planned to have 10 Bassikounou fragments up for sale. Well, I have 9 pieces up for sale currently. I'm only asking $2.50 per gram for all 9 pieces! The gram weights are as follows: 14.2, 16.8, 29.0, 43.7, 50.0, 50.2, 50.8, 85.9, 167.2 The crust on all pieces is pristine with metal flakes very obvious as they shine from the crust. The interior shows to be fresh with a very slight oxidation on maybe 2 or 3 pieces, but overall, very nice looking examples of this wonderful meteorite. For only $2.50 per gram for these pieces, please act quickly if interested -- they may sell fairly quickly! I received a good deal on these pieces and since I'm doing this as part of my small business venture/startup, I am willing to sell them for some less than is normally expected or found around! [meteorite-list] AD: Announcement and Meteorites for sale ( Warning: LONG)
Dear list members, I would like to take this opportunity to make you all aware of a few specimens I have currently up for sale. I currently have listed a 147.4g oriented Gao individual, a nice little 98%+ crusted Zag individual, a 348.4g Canyon Diablo. Prices and some information on each piece can be found on the sales page. http://meteoritedreams.com/meteoritesales This is still a work in progress with some rough edges no doubt. Please let me know if you experience any problems ( I tested the page using Firefox and Explorer), or if anyone cares to comment/critique. Thank you in advance! I also have for sale a nice, relatively fresh 90 - 95% crusted unclassified 209.9g NWA individual which I haven't had time to add to my sale page as of yet. If anyone is interested, upon request, I will email photos. I'm asking $190 for it. As a heads up, I will have some fresh, fairly nicely crusted Bassikounou fragments from 10 grams up to 490 grams listed sometime next week. Nine or ten pieces in all. If interested you can either email me at the email address on the sales page or use this address. I can accept PayPal, checks, or money orders. Warning: Please forgive the wanderings of a middle aged man that follow - Thank you for indulging me monetarily as I ramble a bit. I know many of you are aware of me by name if nothing else ( for good or bad :) ). I've been collecting meteorites off and on since I purchased my first humble pieces from the defacto king of our passion/hobby/vocation, namely, Bob Haag, back in 1997-- like some many of you. I was smitten with these unearthly visitors since I was a child (actually, I have always been intrigued and in awe with all things having to do with space and all fields of science in general), but it was many, many years later before I actually became aware that a mere mortal human being could even dare hold such a wonder in his own hand, let alone own such a treasure! If memory serves me correctly (BTW, its service is becoming harder to trust more and more), it was in the back of an issue of Astronomy magazine that I first came upon a small unimposing ad declaring to anyone who cared - yes, you could own a piece of cosmic treasure for a mere few dollars. That ad of course was placed by someone I never heard of ( I even wondered for a while if it wasn't just a scam, and how did I know what I received - if I received anything at all - even came from space), but today, I'm very aware of, as are many, many people the world round, of the name, Bob Haag! Boy, looking at the hobby today, it is hard to even recall how insular, and small it was just a mere 10 years ago! I've felt very privileged to be a member of this list, correspond with so many members, as well as buy, sell, and occasionally trade with a number of members and dealers that frequent this list. Everyone I've personally dealt with in buying and selling over the years have all been first class, professional, mature and just a real pleasure getting to know and deal with! I could name so many I owe gratitude to for bringing such excitement and joy into one man's life. Starting with of course, Bob Haag, then Jim, Paul, and Michael Blood for this list, some of the first dealers I ever had the pleasure of working with; Rob Elliott, Geoff Notkin, Cathy Casper, Walter Branch, Michael Farmer, Eric Twelker, Geoff Cintron, Eric Olsen, John Gwilliam, Eugene Sharon Cisneros, Ron Hartman, Dean Bessey, Jeff Kuyken, Mark Bostick, Roman Jirasek, Anne Black, Andi Gren, Jim Strope, Carsten Giessler, Mike Bandli, Moritz Karl, Aziz Alhyane, Matt Morgan, Marcin Cimala, and others I can not recall at this time. I've also enjoyed just corresponding with the kind, sweet Maria Haas, the wonderful, kind gentleman, Bernd Pauli, Dirk , our man in Tokyo, and so many others I can't possibly recall at this time. I've been in and out of this hobby a time or two, mainly for two reasons, one was money, the other was my dear late wife. The former, we all can relate to, the latter, I sincerely hope and pray, none of you will know prematurely -- not until many, many happy, joyful, loving years together are shared into old age. Yes, I've always loved these crazy rocks that came from another time and place so alien to me as to be almost unimaginable -- well, to a child's mind anyway. Time would dictate the meandering of my passion versus the realities and circumstances of life here on Earth. I would buy, sell, trade, stop, then do it all over again -- time and time again as reality inevitably would make its stern presence known. However, with some personal issues I been wrestling with over the past few years, along with the loss of my wonderful bride 2 years ago, I have a wonderful 8 year old son who looks up to me and, much to my pleasure and pride, shares many of my passions in life! Therefore, due to him and in honor of him, I've decided to try and delve a little deeper into
Re: [meteorite-list] Walter's Bills and his Ebay Auctions
Dear list, I wholly agree with Bernd's sentiments and plea for all of us to commit an act of selflessness in a very noble effort to help, not only another human being in serious need, but in a very true sense of the definition, a family member. So want everyone, who can, hold back a few dollars you maybe were planning on using to make your latest acquisition and donate them out of compassion and concern to Walter and his family. As Bernd eloquently said, one never knows when it may be one of us, that may desperately need such reaching out by our fellow friends, colleagues... human beings with a soul. We all walk this path together, no man's an island, what goes around comes around... enough cliches for everyone. I firmly believe in Passing It Forward! When it comes down to it, that's really all you can count on in life... the like-mindedness of good, caring, and compassionate people... us! I'm leaving the pulpit now. I thoroughly agree with Alex. A big THANK YOU to Art and Michael for starting something that will most likely endure for as long as things drop from the skies above. Also, a big, kind thank you to Paul, Jim -- for that matter, to everyone, past and present, who have made this list as memorable (and dare I say, addicting) as it is. Even with all of its ups and downs, and myriad of personalities and characters, it is one of the better examples of both education and entertainment converging into one entity. However, Art's real passion was Web design and he thought it would be cool to have a weekly Meteorite Forum and asked me to host it. This format later became Known as chat rooms - but Art envisioned it more as a radio Show with me as the host. I was confident even before the first Send off that once people started talking a host would not be Relevant, but I certainly felt honored and wanted to support Art in this endeavor and bolster his confidence in initiating this Forum, so, happily agreed. Our first Meteorite Forum was held just days after the ALH 84001 announcement on August 6, 1996. As I recall, there Were only 5 or 6 of us on the first chat which included Paul Harris And Jim Tobin of Meteorite Exchange and current editors of METEORITE TIMES, Rick Kujawa, me and a few others who escape My memory for now. Please do forgive me for my feeble memory - and do feel free to chime in and announce your having been there. Of course, that first session was filled with the excitement of Martian life revealed in a meteorite - it wasn't until later the Findings came under question. In any event, within weeks or a few months at most Art decided a Live list would be a better forum and I agreed (not that I had a real Say in it, though he did bounce ideas off of me when it came to meteorites). So, that was the birth of the list. My guess would be October (perhaps November) of 1996 saw the launching of the list as it is known today. Other than increased numbers of participants, the list has remained the same since day one. Over the years there have been periodic complaints about the Lack of use of suspensions and expulsions from the list on the part Of Art. In fact, Art has been very consistent in being slow to suspend Participants and slow in allowing them back on. Various list members Have been barred and most have eventually been allowed to return. I won't go into names as some of them are still on the list. However, Even this limited control has been sabotaged by Matteo who, when Ejected, created false identities and blatantly taunted list members and Art about his clever manipulations of the internet and thumbed His nose at everyone. The point is, Art has done a spectacular job in monitoring the List and has ejected a good number of people - mostly when their Language became obscene and they were blatantly and relentlessly attacking other List members or ripping people off. With the exception of Matteo, Art's patient guidance has served the list well. Thanks to Art, we have this magnificent forum with which we Can keep abreast of meteoritic events such as the adventures of Mike, Bob Robert in recovering the Cali Meteorite, etc. We get THE strait poop AS IT IS HAPPENING. Re: [meteorite-list] unclean gao givaway
My simple question is: where is the moderator, or why is there no moderator! I remember way back, some 4 years and more, when a certain then list member named Joel Warren, I believe, kept showing his rudeness, contempt, and unwillingness to get along and obey the house rules he was shown the door. Also, there was a certain other individual named Michael Casper whom was shown the same door. Looks like that is no longer an option. Why not a little tighter reign here. Who's suppose to be pulling in the reins a little from time to time? I don't see anything. I just wanted to fit in, contribute, and learn, but with all of the children on board it is nearly, if not completely, impossible! I make no bones that there are those on this list that are childish, inconsiderate, some rude, some just plain dense without a clue. I'm sick and tired of the childish and very silly responses given to responses, and some of the ridiculous posts that pop up in the first place. I don't know why this list is so out of control sometimes -- this list definitely proves people do love watching a good train wreck. Other forums, and lists I am, or have been, a member of are so much more controlled and regulated -- they just don't allow or tolerate such crap! All of this childish, baby, school yard bickering, etc. ...it's like a school of sharks or piranha after smelling blood. I know why I left this list 4 years ago, and certainly don't know why I came back and tried to join in. I see perfectly that this list is for the hotshots, the in-crowd -- sort of like high school was. I know I sound like a whiner, and my skins too thin -- sorry, forgive me, I'm the one who has to live with it, but I swear this list really puts a damper on the thrill and joy of an otherwise very exciting hobby. In all fairness, there are those that are well above the fray who cohabit this list -- well beyond reproach, but then again, too many on the opposite end of the spectrum as well! I look up with respect to the good natured, well healed listees; however, the other sort of breed, plain and simply, are just a drag, The anonymity of the Internet and the associated forums, and email lists have really contributed to the overall lack of decorum, respect, dignity, and self control that I dare the vast majority of people would not show if communicating face-to-face with one another. It also seems to me this list is a microcosm for the endemic plague that is infested most all of cultured and civilized peoples the world over, not just here in the US. There I have spoke my mind -- let's see who the grown-ups are on the list versus the children. We were warned several times to leave the area by the locals. After doing some interviews and photo ops hunting and talking with people, we got into two taxis and left to meet at a place for lunch. I was with two of the Colombian astronomy club members and as we tried to drive through a barrio just near where one of the stones was found, a man ran at the taxi with a large gun scraming at us to stop. I saw the people in the front of the taxi duck down and then saw the gunman running at us. The driver hit the gas and we swerved around him, but the gun was about 1 meter from my head. He did not fire thank god, but what a scare, we quickly tried to get out of the neigborhood and told police who ran to the place but we have no idea what happened later. We just fled. We are done here, it is clearly not safe enough to stay, Robert and I both have collection pieces, and having a gun near your head is enough to know when to call it even and go home. I immediately downloaded it, printed it, and I'm presently in the process, with excitement, digesting it all! Both your descriptive catalog and your account of the fall presented on your website will hopefully give impetus to those in the future to present such similar detail when researching and documenting subsequent falls and even finds for that matter when possible! I've printed out both works and placed them in a binder to sit along side my other reference materials. The catalog lists 108 single masses of a combined weight of 62.186kg (including the 6.120kg main mass) individually and another 31.665kg in lots. More than 80 individual masses are pictured. The final TKW of the Bassikounou meteorite fall is 93.851kg. In the latest phase of this undertaking we have often been approached by collectors explaining that regarding to their observations the TKW should be much higher. To prove their point they showed us images of single Bassikounou meteorites or complete lots they were offered recently. In 99% of these cases we had cataloged the particular masses before either individually or under a certain lot. In this context it might be interesting for some of you, that many meteorites change hands already before they get distributed. Moroccan sellers equip their colleagues with commission material to visit Europe, or they simply exchange certain batches of material between one another. This is the reason why one and the same meteorite can be offered to you from different sellers from the same NWA country successively. During our research we were able to follow an exemplary Bassikounou mass on its journey from the local finder, to a distributor in Morroco, to a meteorite fair in France, to a European mineral dealer and finally to a collector in Canada. During the stations of the journey this particular meteorite was offered no less than 12 times under different circumstances and with different photos. This in mind it is no wonder that people think there is much more material circulating than actually is. Our experience lead us to the conclusion that many recent meteorite falls that produced showers are largely overestimated in their total weight. We hope that our investigation may aid the understanding and recovery of future meteorite falls in isolated areas. And we are positive, that our undertaking helps to sensitize finders as well as distributors in Mauritania and Morocco to preserve the information that is connected to the meteorites they trade. [meteorite-list] Ignorant question -- need clarification
Dear List, I have an admittedly ignorant and potentially embarrassing question: is the person calling himself, Aziz (aka Alhyane Abdelaziz ) the same person as Aziz Habibi. I'm sorry, but I'm not familiar with how people from the near east (as well as the middle east) such as northern Africa (i.e., Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, etc.) represent themselves by name. I just want to be sure I'm dealing with the same Aziz. It seems confusing especially with different email addresses, and different physical locations involved like France in one instance, Morocco then next. Since I'm green to the goings on and movements of people in this area of the world, I just want to be absolutely sure I'm dealing with, first, the same person or persons, then secondly, no potential scamming, but reputable wholesalers/dealers. It isn't a cause for a sale-abration for many of us. It is a day for many of us to actually turn our thoughts in reflection into the lives of the men and women of our Armed Forces and those of some Allies that have given their lives so that others may live in liberty and lead otherwise oblivious lives in their own pursuits of happiness. Perhaps you should stop apologizing for all the transgressions you make--unless you make them so you can post another message to apologize whist plugging your sale yet again. Perhaps you should not post either way. And for all the scumbag listees that prostitute yourselves to grovel over sSteve's bribes/discards-- feeding into his morbid games: Get some back bone. Very, Very Well Done, Geoff! The virtual tour portion is especially nice, not to mention extremely educational for the initiated as well as uninitiated. Definitely something for everyone -- children of all ages, myself included! I highly recommend everyone who loves this hobby/passion (and who doesn't :-) ) check out UNM's Institute of Meteoritics website! Again, Geoff, Kudos to you, and high praises for a superb job!!! I've been somewhat quiet on the List these past few months, but I have a good excuse: It is with great pleasure that I can today announce the completion of a major new website for the Meteorite Museum at the University of New Mexico's Institute of Meteoritics. The University maintains an excellent small museum on campus, and I know some of you have visited it. Plans for a new physical museum have been drawn up, and the first step towards achieving that goal was the creation of a modern, interactive website. The site includes the following: - A comprehensive animated Virtual Tour of the educational material which the new museum will feature. This is a wonderful resource and includes detailed information on the Solar System, comets, asteroids, chondrites, differentiated meteorites, impact craters, the Moon, Mars and a great deal more - Architect's plans for the new museum - An extensive gallery of new, original meteorite photographs from the IOM collection - A gallery of thin section photographs - A guide to New Mexico meteorites - Features on meteorite identification, teacher activities, and microscopes I had the privilege of working closely with Dr. Rhian Jones and Dr. Barbara Cohen at UNM during the concept, design, and construction of this site. Many of the best ideas came from them, and they contributed to the genesis of the site in all areas. In particular, Rhian devised the text and content for the Virtual Tour and Barbara designed many of the banners and provided photos, graphics, as well as concepts for the site structure. My senior design assistant Karl Covington executed the animation, as well as image rendering, design, and typesetting, and the final product benefited greatly from all their efforts. I'd like thank Dr. Jones, Dr. Cohen and their colleagues for the opportunity to serve as art director for this fascinating project and I hope you will all enjoy the new site. Re: [meteorite-list] Where have all the meteorites gone?
Since Paul mentioned this about material drying up on eBay, I've been wondering a little about this eBay seller called, 'jlacroix1' ( I've also followed/watched one or two others for the past month or so who seem to be following sort of the same pattern). Here's an example of what I'm referring to (which I'm sure many of you already know about): http://cgi.ebay.com/64-27-KGS-NEW-CAMPO-DEL-CIELO-METEORITE-142-pounds_W0QQitemZ120117201192QQihZ002QQcategoryZ3239QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem He seems to peddle a lot of Campo in the 100+ (40 kg and up) lbs. range for what I consider unbelievably low prices for their sizes. Even if they're not high grade or sculpted specimens, I don't understand how he can offer the amount of material he seems to be always offering at, to me anyway, such low and unreal prices! For all I know, he may be well know by many of you, and even a member of this list in excellent standing. His has a stellar feedback rating of an unbelievable 100% out of nearly 3000 transactions ( I mean not one slightly disgruntled buyer/ seller for any reason at all, ever). Can someone just shed some light on my skepticism with these too good to believe offerings. Maybe I'm just too jaded for my own good. I'm sorry if I'm challenging someone who is completely beyond reproach in any manner or degree whatsoever. I really don't mean to, I just don't understand this phenomenon in this day and age, especially when it comes to eBay. I know the dealers in our community and their reputable ways, but this just makes me wonder. I mean when I purchase a sculpted, and top rated AAA Campo, I pay nearly that much for a specimen in the 20 to 30 lbs. (10kg to 12Kg or so) range forget nearly 150 lbs.! Appreciate any clarification on this from those out there that know. [meteorite-list] Helping the People of Greensburg
Hello Everyone, First of all, my son and I would like to offer our deep, sincere regret and sorrow to all of those that may have been impacted by the horrific tragedy in Greensburg, Kansas and surrounding area! The most important issue at hand for the people who lived through the devastation is shelter, food, drink, and the seemingly daunting task of putting their lives back together which admittedly is, I feel, not a priority as just making one day to the next their overwhelming challenge at present. I spoke with my 8 year old son, Gabriel, regarding the destruction, and he came up with the idea of writing a letter to his school principal, teachers, and classmates regarding this tragedy and asking if they wouldn't mind donating whatever they can to help the good people in the Greensburg area. I'm also planning on emailing family and friends to ask them if they would do the same. My question is; how should I ask people to donate, or where to send donations? Could someone set up a special PayPal account to collect funds for the relief, or should we just send donations to one of the list members such as Maria, Mark, Steve, Geoff, or someone else? I know they could send their donations to the Red Cross of course, but does anyone have a more direct ( i.e., more personal and maybe more efficient) way of sending funds to hopefully/possibly be of more immediate help to those in greatest need? [meteorite-list] Publishing a book of photographs on meteorite thin sections
Tom, Jeff, and list, Since I've been out of touch for a while, I have question regarding micro photography. Specially, art house type publication involving micro photography. After seeing Tom Phillips' stunning images of the meticulously prepared slides by Jeff Hodges it hit me, has anyone every published a book of photographs on meteorite thin sections -- sort of a coffee table art book (i.e. a pictorial essay)? If not, I would think Tom, Jeff, and others involved in this discipline, in one form or another, might possible be persuaded to think along these lines. Maybe, we as a community could even offer to contribute financially towards such a project to see that such a beautiful, rare sub discipline of art and science be made available to all. I know I would! It would also be kind of neat to see the meteorite community here, and the IMCA as well, be recognized publicly for our involvement to promote science, and meteoritics! We could be a catalyst in stirring the fertile ground of imagination of the young (and older of us as well). Except for the few in the scientific community, and a few other devotees, most of us who enjoy meteorites really never get a chance to really see such awe-inspiring, high quality, detailed images of one aspect of our hobby. It would even perhaps help to stir more interest in science, and meteoritics in particular, to the public at large -- especially school age children. I know some of you have published in the past in one form or another, and know of possible publishing houses that may wish to help in such an endeavor -- for a fee of course. :-) Just a thought. [meteorite-list] Just to say, Hi once again!
Hello everyone once again! After almost a four year absence, I had an irresistible urge to again stroll back to the old neighborhood and see how much or how little it may have changed. It is rather refreshing to see many of the same old names I remember from the past, as well as some new ones, posting, along with some of the same in-family bickering going on that I so vividly remember from the past. Reminds me of one big family sitting around the dinner table with everyone fighting over the last piece of pie! :-) It is really nice to see everyone, or should I say read everyone, once again -- sort of like coming home after a long sojourn in the wilderness with all of its uncertainties and possible dangers, to be back in safer, and more familiar surroundings, albeit maybe a bit tumultuous, and testy at times, but never the less, still a feeling of kinship! I've been absent for the past couple of years from the meteorite list due to several reasons, but principally since my wife, Ava, passed away suddenly and most untimely in an auto accident two years ago this coming Monday, April 2nd. Personally, things were somewhat tough before her death, but at least she was there then to help smooth over the rough terrain, but after her death our one an only child, Gabriel (now eight) was my one and only true concern. Although my heart has always remained true to our wondrous, cosmic friends from above, I had to take a break from collecting, participating on the list, and even subdue to a major degree, my once burning desire and interest in reading and educating myself further on a once most passionate joy in my life. My son came first above all else, and a very unwanted adjustment period ensued with the loss of Gabriel's mother, and my best friend while trying to be both father and mother to Gabriel, and at the same time trying to cope with my own sense of loss and bewilderment. Anyway, I also wanted to mention how shocked I was when I rejoined the list a couple of days ago to hear about Walter Branch being involved in some sort of auto accident of his own! From the little information I've gathered thus far, it sounds as if Walter's daughter was involved in the accident as well, but that she may have faired much better than he had? I was just somewhat shocked and dismayed to read of this for I dealt with Walter on several occasions and found him extremely friendly as well as professional! He was top drawer as was everyone I've dealt with over the years on this list! I just offer up my best wishes and prayers for Walter, his wife, and daughter during this very tragic time in their lives! If anyone has an email address that is current for either Walter or his wife, I would like to directly email them my sympathy, and concern. Also, if anyone would care to do so, I would also like to hear how Walter is progressing! Well, in closing, I'm back to collecting ( already made several purchases from several dealers on our list and from my past), and on top of that, I have a very inquisitive eight year old who just purchased his own VERY FIRST meteorite (actually several :-) ). Hope all of you are doing well personally, and meteoritically! {smile} Best regards to all, Mal __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] The Search for the Missing Amazon Meteor
Hi Folks, I thought some of you might be interested in reading this article at Space.com: http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/planetearth/crater_expedition_020924-1.html Very interesting excerpt, On Sept. 26, the expedition team will hold their third and last live webcast, accessible through their web site (http://www.blueiceonline.org). The researchers involved think this may be the youngest impact crater on Earth (the site is located in Bolivia); Scientists are not certain how or when Iturralde Crater formed (despite its name that alludes to an impact). General speculation and circumstantial evidence point to the collision of a meteor either an asteroid or comet -- about 5,000 to 30,000 years ago. This would make it one of the youngest impact craters known, although some scientists argue it is much older. I know this missing Amazon meteor story has been around for sometime and is rather controversial, but at the same time, have any of you heard of the theory related to a meteor impact that may have shaped the coastline of North and South Carolina! There is a geophysicist (I can't remember his name or where I read the story at this time, but I will find it again soon) who claims that this just may have happened. Although most if not all of his fellow peers strongly doubt it, he is still undeterred and says he will prove it one way or another! Both topics are extremely interesting... Re: [meteorite-list] Lawrencite-like oozing from an H6 Impact Melt Breccia
Thanks to all that have responded so far, Ron H., Mike F., David C., Guy S., David H., Matteo C., Tracey L., and Christian A. -- hope I didn't miss anyone! Sorry, if I did! I guess I've just been pretty fortunate with the vast majority of my H stony meteorites as far as Lawrencite goes, but rust is another story! I've had some problems with rust like on El Hammami (due to camel sweat as the story goes, but I'm pretty sure atmospheric conditions of just being on Earth had very much to do with that as well). As far as Kunya-Urgench goes, basically all brown from rust, but holding up well otherwise, no oozing so far at least, and I've had it for over 3 years (although I understand that a good portion of the single meteorite sat for some period of time in water or at least in a marshy like environment until it could be removed -- am I correct on this?). I've also had a problem or two with Pallasites like Brahin (rust), but never any Lawrencite (ferrous chloride) type oozing. But again, as I've said many times already, I'm no expert and my experience level I still consider intermediate even after 10 years of enjoying the hobby. As Ron has mentioned, I do realize H's do have a lot of iron (i.e. free metal (nickel/iron) not chemically bound in mineral form -- did I put that fairly close to correct, Ron?) and would have a high tendency to rust, but like I said, I just haven't read or remember hearing anyone complain about this condition before with stony's -- just irons. However, senility does begin early in my family. :-) Finally, from what I understand, when it comes to Dhofar 010 only several pieces totaling around 3.5 kg were found in Oman, and being pretty badly weathered (W3), the epoxy was used to hold the cut pieces together during finishing as they were rather cracked and had a strong potential to break during the polishing process! However, I doubt seriously that the epoxy has anything to do with this, for one thing, my particular piece has hardly if any at all, and secondly, the oozing on my piece is no were around any of the fractured areas! Believe it, or not, I'm through -- Mal At 11:31 PM 5/21/2002 -0700, you wrote: Hi Mal, Yes, believe it or not stones can and do have the Lawrencite disease. The same greenish-ooze! There is considerable iron in stones too, and it does happen. I have an El Hammami that is terrible in this regard, and some Saharan H chondrites as well. I'd treat it the same way as you have, in anhydrous alcohol (not even 99%). Blot the ooze at once, don't let it get started, and change the alcohol often until it stops. It will give up eventfully. I've been on and off of the list for 3 or 4 years, but lately (last year or so) mostly a lurker. Back in the earlier days there were some on this list more interested in stirring up the mix so-to-speak than carry on any meaningful dialogue, transfer of knowledge, or just plain enrich the passion of others on the list that really wanted to talk meteorites! After a few unpleasant run-ins and realizing that it appeared the list was really nothing much more than an on-line market for dealers and collectors wishing to trade/sell meteorites, and most of the remaining threads involved the aforementioned malarkey, I just kind of slipped into the background and hung around waiting for that relatively rare and interesting tidbit of info actually concerning meteorites! There were a handful of regular contributors, and experts that came through back then just as they still do today, and I think most of you know the individuals I'm referring to! The reason for the above statement is to my great pleasure and enjoyment, this list has changed for the better and is getting better all of the time. I think there were many members, in fact I know there were some members for they emailed me privately with the same concerns, whom would not join in out of fear of being ridiculed and harassed. Well, it seems as if it is all water under the bridge now! Now to my question... I recently purchased a beautifully prepared part slice of Dhofar 010 which is an H6 impact melt breccia. It shows a very dark black melt (the matrix material) surrounding the lighter brown unmelted clasts sparkling with tiny bits of metal. I've had it now for almost a month. The past week, week and a half, I noticed that it has dark, brown, greenish looking droplets of moisture oozing out on the back unpolished side and a couple of droplets on the front highly polished

[meteorite-list] ***AD*** DISPLAY CASES FOR SALE ******
Hello fellow meteorite enthusiast, I have two very nice display cases I would like to sell. They were custom hand built to specifications I wanted at the time ( ~ 5 years ago). I've out grown them for my purposes and would like to find a nice home for them. They are both virtually identical except in physical size. They are constructed of light colored oak for the base/trim with red felt lining the inside bottom display area. The top covers are made of acrylic plastic and look as NEW and MINT as the day I bought them! The dimensions for the smaller of the two cases is as follows: O.D.: 19.5 W x 8.5 D x 4.75 H I.D. (actual display area): 18 W x 7 D x 4 H As for the larger case, it is: O.D.: 20 W x 11 D x 6.75 H I.D. (actual display area): 18 W x 9 D x 6 H I paid over a $135 for these two cases (custom built) roughly 5 years ago NOT including the shipping/handling cost, nor insurance! They are beautiful cases and I'm somewhat reluctant to let them go, but if someone really has a nice individual specimen to show off or even several, they will look very nice in these cases! I'm willing to let both go as one lot for $75 + S/H and insurance to cover the acrylic covers as well as the bases, or I'll sell them individually, the larger for $50 and the smaller $40. I'll be more than happy to email jpg photos to anyone interested. The shipping, and insurance will have to be determined according to destination and carrier used! Thanks for your kind attention! Sincerely, Mal IMCA member #6819
