Single LeConte's Sparrow, Mille Lacs Wildlife Area, southern entrance road,
first field on west side, north side of that field. Have had them along the
southern side of this road in past years, initially posted by Herb Dingmann.

Birded Kathio (Mille Lacs County) this morning - 10 warbler species (14-15
nest) - Golden-winged everywhere - surprised by Lawrence's backcross male in
one group - also found a little north of normal Blue-gray Gnatcatcher.
Gorgeous day for birding, bugs insignificant.

Yesterday afternoon, according to various sources, both a Ross' Snow Goose
were present on the ponds, along with numerous Cackling.
This morning the ponds were relatively empty, but a city truck and worker were
present.
An American Pipit called briefly.

The recent rash of Midwestern rarities drives the question, what percentage of
rarities are seen by birders? Does the presence of a Vermillion Flycatcher
mean that ten are in the Midwest? How would one answer such a question?

At the Wealthwood boat access, scoped a gull that appeared somewhat larger than
area Boni's, dark underwing (not as dark as top of wing), white front edge (not

Ruffed Grouse, Common Ravens on an otherwise quiet morning on Milaca Hiking
Trails. Most water frozen.
I mention the ravens due to the fact that they are rarely seen in between
Sherburne Refuge Kathio State Park (45-50 mile gap) both common areas for
them.

was not definitive - and a female pheasant is much more likely - but

Glaucous-winged Gull present among seven species at Canal Park.
Pine Grosbeaks, possible Hoary Redpoll in woods next to Two Harbors lighthouse.
Would have loved a longer look, certainly lighter, less barring.
On to Aitkin County, ninth try for Snowy this winter, bit snake bitten there.

Believe I've learned to enjoy birding 11 of 12 months here in my adopted home
of Minnesota.

Sax-Zim Aitkin County are my usual solutions to this rather slow month.

Checked Mille Lacs Lake (west side), Lake Onamia environs this morning. 52
species, 13 ducks, only bird of note was a week early Bonaparte's at the
Garrison pull off (north median date 4/13). Only a few loons, no grebes to
speak of.

Park in afternoon.
15 warbler species - no waves - nice looks at Bay-breasted - enjoyed sleeping
nighthawk - only 91 species total - beautiful day to be out.

At 24 warblers 22 shorebirds for year, both could be enhanced. Or regional
specialties/one day wonders (eg, Whimbrel) also of interest.

16-17 warblers at Kathio State Park, including singing Connecticut in open
meadow on right side of main road, past trail center.

Before torrential rains, Common Gallinule, LeConte's Sparrow, YB Cuckoo at
Sherburne Refuge, Auto Tour Blue Hill Trail. Famous birding couple sighting,
on the gallinules (my thanks).

Just a reminder that Sherburne Refuge's Nesters Tour is Saturday, June 2nd,
8:00 AM, beginning at Mahnomen Trail.
The refuge would appreciate a call, letting them know you can come; but come,

10 of our 87 counties hit 200 species reported this spring season - including,
of course, Sherburne:) - few more are very close, like Ramsey and Morrison -
how many will make this magic number?

in this area, even during non-migration.
In Madison, WI this weekend for a wedding, enjoyed first Yellow-throated
Warbler in ten years (still need confirmed one in MN, brief look on one
occasion could have been Audubon's).

All six swallows present at Milaca Hiking Trails/Sewage Ponds this morning.
Toughest find in area tends to be Northern Rough-winged.
10 warblers in area yesterday.
