Re: Replacing RTC battery?
I replaced the X-tal and against all expectations, my clock is running again. Thank god it is fixed with this EUR 1 solution. On my computer, the clock still isn't running perfectly, it is still running behind, but it's only a matter of hours, the date was still correct. I think my battery wasn't fully charged yet (or maybe overcharged; I let my MSX run for 24 hours to charge it). I can live with it the way it is now, and maybe it even corrects itself in a few days. By the way, Dos yesterday said it was Sun(day) 12-03-2000... So the MSX (or at least Dos) hasn't got a problem with Feb 29th either, because otherwise it would indicate Saturday. ~Grauw -- email me: [EMAIL PROTECTED] or ICQ: 10196372 visit the Datax homepage at http://datax.cjb.net/ MSX Mailinglist. Re: Replacing RTC battery?
Not that it is really a big problem (the screensettings were the worst) I think it IS a big problem since: 1. The MAKEFILE utility for C will not function properly unless the source files are saved with the correct date and time; I don't program C(++)... 2. Keeping track of versions of a file is difficult enough as it is, even when you do have the correct save date and time. Everytime I start Compass a batchfile copies all files from the desired directory to the subdir Backup, and renames all .ASM files in Backup to .BAK, and deleted every .BAK file. For the rest, I do not keep up multiple copies, and when I do, I add a version-number, or I can derive it from the file length. 3. Some programs use the clock as a timer (since JIFFY can change from 50 to 60 Hz and it is impractical for timing minutes or hours). The clock works correctly while running... Just not when the MSX is turned off. ~Grauw -- email me: [EMAIL PROTECTED] or ICQ: 10196372 visit the Datax homepage at http://datax.cjb.net/ MSX Mailinglist. I've got a problem which is much alike. I replaced the accu, but they didn't have one alike so I got an 1.2V accu and a 2.4V accu to replace it. Re: Replacing RTC battery?
I have replaced the backup battery in my NMS8255 last week. Originally, it was a 3.6V/46mA battery that was not available at my local electronics shop, so I put in a 3.6V/90mA type that was slightly bigger. That was not a problem since there's enough room on the PCB. Now screen settings, date and time are saved again, but the clock is not running! After installing the new battery, I have set the correct date and time. Since then, if I should believe the computer, not a second has passed. This is weird. What could be wrong? I've got a problem which is much alike. I replaced the accu, but they didn't have one alike so I got an 1.2V accu and a 2.4V accu to replace it. I did it, and now it remembers the screen settings, however, the clock is still confused... How come? (and how to solve?) Not that it is really a big problem (the screensettings were the worst), but I still would like to have it right. ~Grauw -- email me: [EMAIL PROTECTED] or ICQ: 10196372 visit the Datax homepage at http://datax.cjb.net/ MSX Mailinglist. Re: Replacing RTC battery?
(problem: real time clock in NMS8255 is not running) are u sure it's a 3.6 V battery and not a 2.4 V battery. This problem also occurs when one of the 3 cells is defective (a 3.6V battery is made of 3 X 1.2V ) I've measured 3.0 V when the computer is off and 3.5 V when power is on. Maybe the battery is not fully charged yet, but it does rememeber all settings. After disconnecting the battery and switching the power on, the clock doesn't work either so I assume this is not the problem. if that's not the problem your Xtal may be damaged. maybe you hit it when replacing the battery. Not likely, but I can give it a try. Only problem is that I can't read the part number or frequency on it. Can you tell me what it should be? BTW, is there anywhere I could find a circuit diagram of the NMS-8255? Just for testing. I'd hate to buy another one because this computer is tuned up with 7MHz and 1MB of user ram. Re: Replacing RTC battery?
I've an idea about that: I have a relais on the alarmline of the clock: Because of a bug in the bios of MSX this line is doing strange when changing time while in DOS(2) Maybe the same bug is keeping the clock from running now, so try setting time and date from Basic (set clock "xx:xx:xx") and set date "xx/xx/xx" good luck. - Original Message - From: ladroop [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, March 05, 2000 10:58 PM Subject: Re: Replacing RTC battery? Reading this I am wonderering: My MSX isn't running on time. Every time I turn it on the time is running behind. While I am working, I can't say if it is falling behind or not. Every time I use the MSX I adjust time to current. Is this also cause of a bad battery? That's a typical HTML (Hard To Miss Lad) situation... When you remove the disk-drive part, you'll probably notice a yellow cylinder in the right front of the main PCB... That should be the 'battery'.
