Hey everyone, just figured I would share my recent findings regarding
an air leak so hopefully it will help someone else resolve the problem
faster.
My bike is an 83 NH650. It's been losing power at higher speeds,
especially when it's windy/gusty out. It pretty much forces me to
draft a truck

I've got an inline filter on mine that's great. I'll see if I can fingure out
who made it. It's plastic with a gold metal filter that's cone shaped. It
barely fits in behind the carbs but it works fine.

Javier is correct - KN's are washable and can be re-coated with their
'Filter Fluid' - they also provide more flow without losing filtration than
a stock filter (usually a good thing but not for lean jetted Hondas!) I run
one on my car and got about two more miles to the gallon because it uncorked

I think there is a lot of name building up the price. I have seen KN oil
filters for about $17, while a generic brand may cost $5. That is more than
twice the price. Can you really tell if the KN is filtering twice as better
as the generic brand?

what's their filter fluid? Something like whatt we have in the
garage like WD40 or 30W engine oil? Graham

Graham,
It more resembles Marvel Mystery Oil - its red in color - a very
light oil - it is lighter than transmission fluid but a similar color.
As to 'how can you tell its better' - I don't know - I assume you

Usually they come pre-oiled - but they recommend that you wash and

the one i just got was not preoiled. it took 5 minutes to install and now my
bike runs much better. more hp and its low idle was mitigated as well. i
think a dirty filter was the cause of a number of my issues. the oem one was

It is something like transmission fluid or Marvel Mystery oil. Because it
allows more air to pass through you experience an increase in air flow; and
because it can be cleaned and re - oiled, it saves money; however, I don't
consider that it's as through as Amsoil's counterpart, which is made

For that matter, you could just buy the foam filter and add a
little MarvelMystery Oil at two or three bucks a can and have oil left over to
clean repeatedly and use for other applications, like lubrication of squeaky
doors, lawn mower wheels, etc. Or add the can to the crankcase to clean

making a shot in the dark: why not add some extra fuel line at the petcock and
insert a filter?

I'll chime in on this one.
One of the main things that KN and [presumably] Amsoil is the *way* they
filter the air.* While it might seem counter-productive, the holes that
allow air to pass through the element are actually *larger* than the holes
in cheap paper air filters. Because the element is
Good pics, Allen.
Did your installation require the use of spacers on all 4 mounting
points and longer bolts on the shock mount? I'm thinking longer bolts
won't be a problem and maybe we can use multiple washers as spacers.

Paul,
From past discussions here, the consensus is that KN is too efficient
for Nighthawks, allowing more air volume to flow, therefore upsetting
the already too lean OEM fuel-to-air ratio.
That would require fiddly adjustment/modification of the carbs to
richen the mixture. More air = need for
That would be me. It was a spin on the dixie cup idea from Dennis H. In the
end I went with new jets.
