[NTG-context] new to ConTeXt
Hi there, after more than five years using LaTeX (Lambda and XeLaTeX, this one for the last months), I have decided to give ConTeXt a try. LaTeX is fine for me: I have typeset my own dissertation in Philosophy (with ancient Greek and Unicode) and a couple of books. But the modular design makes things tricky at the end, and I would like to give ConTeXt (with XeTeX and LuaTeX when it comes) a try. At the same time, I would like to switch from TeX to XML. TeX is fine, but XML is better for other than typographical purposes. Coming from the humanities, I guess the right choice is TEI (P5 is expected to be released before middle of the following year). I had some experience with XML and Docbook some years ago, but that was before I switched to Linux and Docbook aims to technical documentation (and I'm not a technical guy). I guess I can mix ConTeXt and XML with the eXaMpLe framework (I have just read about it at wiki.contextgarden.net). In order to understand TEI and ConTeXt, I would like to be able to create the files that will be able to compile an TEI XML document with ConTeXt without having to convert it to ConTeXt. I would like to avoid XSL and XSL-FO. I guess it should be something similar DocbookInConTeXt, but I don't know whether it uses the eXaMplE framework (I don't even know whether . Could anyone comment on this topic? I mean, whether the described task could be achieved with ConTeXt, which issues may arise, whether this is the best approach to the issue, whether I miss something, and so on. Sorry for not answering before (these days I find myself installing a new computer and moving data into it). It seems that the task is more difficult than I thought (although x-contm.tex seems a very interesting example to begin with). But my problem right now is ConTeXt itself. My PhD thesis (that was typeset with LaTeX [for the examination board], Lambda [for the electronic publication] and XeLaTeX [just for fun ;-)]) contains quotes and some fragments in ancient Greek. And I would like to be able to do similar things (in a fancier way, of course ;-)) with ConTeXt. For those ones who were newbies not so long ago or that come from a humanities background, which are the best documents to start learning ConTeXt? Maybe the issue here is that I want to learn how to do things in ConTeXt that I was able to do with LaTeX. But this may be the wrong approach to ConTeXt (because this might not be a good way to learn ConTeXt using LaTeX as the background example). I want ConTeXt to produce mainly articles and textbooks (after learning that it will be easy to figure out presentations). I know some references, but I don't know which are the best ones. With this particular topic, I'm not sure whether I fully understand what you mean. For me, input and output must be Unicode (it is the best way to avoid problems) and this can be done with XeTeX. I don't know how good the integration with ConTeXt is, but for me and before LuaTeX is released in an stable version, XeTeX is the only way of dealing with fonts in TeX. Is there something in your Greek module that cannot be done with XeTeX? > Don't hesitate to ask here when you have specific questions, but > maybe that can get you started. Some time ago, I read somewhere (on the web) that you switched to ConTeXt, after having to edit a book with Word. And then I discovered that you teach Classics at Bonn. Then, if the question is not too personal (it hope not, but sorry if it is): how did you learn ConTeXt? Only tinkering with already existing modules? Did you read any manuals? (Again, if this is not too personal, I assume that our interests in ConTeXt are similar, although I'm not a classicist and I don't belong to the academia) Thanks for your help, Pablo ___ ntg-context mailing list ntg-context@ntg.nl http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context

I know that XML can be converted to TeX/LaTeX/ConTeXt using XSL, but my XML is TEI (http://www.tei-c.org/) and not DocBook. If I would use XSL transformation, I guess it would be easier (at least for me) to adapt the already existing TEI-XML->LaTeX XSL files and adapt them to ConTeXt. [NTG-context] XeTeX, ConTeXt and PDF
Hi there, I'm using xdvipdfmx 0.3 and ConTeXt ver: 2006.11.06 09:10 MK II fmt: 2006.11.11 int: english/english. Papersize doesn't seem to work in \setuppapersize[A4,landscape]. Even if I use \pdfpageheight=21cm and \pdfpagewidth=29.7cm, I get a 29.7×29.7cm square as papersize. I think that the issues with XeTeX and papersize have been already solved. When producing bookmarks with XeConTeXt, for some strange reason destinations change the page view to /Fit. Is there any way to avoid this? Bookmarks are generated fine in UTF-8, but surprisingly (at least for me) the file info is wrong generated. Here you have an example: \enableregime[utf] \definetypeface[myfont][rm][Xserif][Junicode] \setupbodyfont[myfont,12pt] \setupinteraction[state=start,title={χαλεπὰ τὰ καλά}] \setupinteractionscreen[option=bookmark] \placebookmarks[chapter,section,subsection] \starttext \chapter{χαλεπὰ τὰ καλά} \stoptext By the way, could not "texmfstart texexec --xtx" invoke xdvipdfmx with the -E option enabled by default? [NTG-context] relative scaling for fonts
Hi there, I'm using XeTeX one of the features that I miss at most from XeLaTeX (from fontspec), is the possibility to set automatically the scaling of fonts so that they match the lowercase or uppercase letters of the roman font. I wonder whether there is something similar for ConTeXt. By the way, the ConTeXt uses in my view, the wrong XeTeX way to set the interlinear space, since it seems that \XeTeXuseglyphmetrics is set to 0. Probably I should be missing something, but if \XeTeXuseglyphmetrics is not set to 1, ConTeXt will set the interlinear space not by itself, but following the glyph metrics and in some fonts the font height. I guess it would be better to use \XeTeXuseglyphmetrics=1. Best, Pablo ___ ntg-context mailing list ntg-context@ntg.nl http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context

In XeTeX you can set your fonts in these way: \definetypeface[myfont][rm][Xserif][Junicode] \definetypeface[myfont][tt][Xmono][Epigrafica][][rscale=1] \setupbodyfont[myfont,13pt] But the problem there is that one should know which is the value of rscale is. If \lowercase and \uppercase variables were defined, it would be possible that ConTeXt calculates by itself which is the required scaling factor to match the roman font (lowercase or uppercase, respectively). This is explained (for LaTeX I'm afraid) at page 45 (section 8.7.3) of the fontspec documentation (http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/xetex/latex/fontspec/fontspec.pdf). In this way, it would be possible to autoscale to the rm font all fonts used in a document. My most common scenario for font scaling is not roman with sansserif or typewritter, but roman Latin with roman Greek characters and setting the same x-height for both. And I thought there were fine with the same x-height for both. My typographical ability wouldn't let my set other relative scaling factor other than 1 or the same x-height for both fonts. [NTG-context] bug in compressed linenotes (and two ideas about them)
Hi Hans, I'm afraid I found another bug in linenotes (http://www.ousia.tk/compressed-linenotes.pdf and http://www.ousia.tk/compressed-linenotes.tex). When a compressed linenote is located at the beginning of the line, the inbetween distance from \setupnote is suppressed, but the distance from \setupnotation isn't. This happens either linenotes are in paragraph form or not. I have also three suggestions on the linenote spacing. I'd be highly pleased that Thomas and Idris could comment on them, since they are the experts on the topic. The first one is more a question, because I'm not sure whether this is already possible. Could I set a variable length in inbetween from \setupnote and distance from \setupnotation? This would help better spacing in linenotes. Sorry for asking, but I tried in the past and I wasn't able to do it. The other two suggestions are about enabling different spacing options for compressed linenotes than the standard spacing for linenotes. The sample shows that without separator, compressed linenotes have more blank space than standard linenotes, since compressed linenotes without separator have two added spaces without interruption. How about a compresseddistance option that assumes there is no separator and sets a single space? In the sample, compressed linenotes are preceeded by a 2em space, where standard linenotes are preceeded by a 1.5em space. Having more space for compressed linenotes than for standard ones may be misleading in some cases. And even using a separator, being able to specify different distances would be also extremely helpful, because it is not always the case where separators need more space before than after (as line reference numbers need). How about implementing two options such as compressedbefore and compressedafter that would achieve this? BTW, I tried to enclose the sample within a TEXpage, but it didn't contain the linenotes. Is this intended or am I missing something? [NTG-context] two questions on paragraphed linenotes
Dear Hans, I'd like to introduce a friend into composing critical editions using ConTeXt. I have made some tests myself, and I'd like to know a couple of issues about paragraphed linenotes before start explaining. The first issue is about note split. When I started using ConTeXt, I realized that footnotes might be placed in the next page (unless split=verystrict is set). Fearing the same results in linenotes, I set this, but this lead to wrong separation between body and notes (at least on my examples). My question is: does the default split value for paragraphed linenotes keep all notes in the same page? The second question is on the space before linenotes that separates from text body. With your fix from last week, things have improved a lot. You told me is tricky. If you allow me a (naive) question: wouldn't it be possible that ConTeXt would check whether body lines respect the before distance of the first paragraphed linenotes and move as many lines that don't respect this distance to the next page? There are another issues. I'd love to use ConTeXt for critical editions. But I need to know both issues first. Hi Rudolf, using UnifrakturMaguntia (from http://unifraktur.sf.net), here is a small sample: \mainlanguage[deo] \definefontfeature[default][default]% [script=latn,ss06=yes,cv01=yes,ss01=yes,ss03=yes] \usemodule[simplefonts] \setmainfont[UnifrakturMaguntia] \starttext \startlines Habe nun, ach! Da steh’ ich nun, ich armer Thor! \stoplines \stoptext I think that it's easier to use the simplefonts module than the standard ConTeXt method. I guess one of the advantages of simplefonts is to invoke font by OS name. I must admit I'm biased here: I don't actually know how to use the standard ConTeXt font system :-). Just in case they were needed (sorry if they aren't), two tips: \setmainfont sets the font for the whole document. If you want only to use it in a passage or from a given point \definesimplefonttypeface[UnifratkturMaguncia] or \definesimplefont[UnifrakturMaguncia]. OpenType features are enabled for the whole document with \definefontfeature and they are enabled or disabled using the four-character tag equals to yes or no. I hope is clear. Dear Hans, I'm afraid that there is a bug in compressed linenotes that prevents to have the line ranges to be properly numbered. Here you have a sample: \setupnotation[linenote][compress=yes] \starttext \startlinenumbering \linenote{Without this note, line numbering from ranges is right}\startlinenote[one]{This should have lines 1 to 3.}line one\\ line two\\ line three\stoplinenote[one] \stoplinenumbering \stoptext It happens when compressed linenotes are enabled and there is a linenote before the \startlinenote. In that case, only the first line is numbered, not the last. Could you fix that? [NTG-context] wrong space when compressseparator is empty
Dear Hans, I have the following sample: \showstruts \setupnote[linenote][paragraph=yes, inbetween=\hskip1.5em] \setupnotation[linenote][alternative=serried, compress=yes, compressseparator=, distance=1em] \starttext \startlinenumbering \dorecurse{500}{text\linenote{variant} } \stoplinenumbering \stoptext that shows the following issue: when compressseparator is set to none, ConTeXt doesn’t suppress the distance that comes after the separator at the beginning of the line. As a general rule, I think it would make sense to always suppress distance after separator when the separator isn’t set (not only at the beginning of the line). This wouldn’t only fix the issue described above, but it would avoid that compressed linenotes have more separation space than uncompressed ones. Could you fix this? [NTG-context] keeping headings with following texts
Dear list, writing an article on ConTeXt, I have found what I think is a surprising feature (at least, a surprising default): headings don’t always keep with next paragraph, so they can end up in being widowed (heading + page break + first paragraph on next page). Sorry, but I’m afraid that I don’t understand this default. I have never seen a printed book that displays this behavior (unless the heading was alone on its page). Don‘t get me wrong, I‘m more than happy with ConTeXt. But would anyone be so kind to explain the reason of the described default? (I’m trying to understand, so I can explain to others.) I have found on the list (http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2007/023357.html) the way to avoid this: \setuphead[section][before={\page[bigpreference]}] How can I know which is the exact default value in any given command? [NTG-context] still a bug with compressed linenotes and no compressseparator
Dear Hans, many thanks for the latest beta, that fixes the line range numbering. I’m afraid there are still two issues with compressed linenotes when the compressseparator is missing. Having linenotes from the same line separated with only blank space is a standard practice in critical editions. I’m not a philologist and I don’t have access to a library on a regular basis. If samples from http://context.aanhet.net/epen2007/share/idris/cr-apparatus.pdf are allowed, from three possible examples, figures 4.2 and 4.4 only include blank space as separator for “compressed” linenotes and figure 4.6 includes a separator (||). Here a sample (I know there is no hyphenation on body text) that shows the two issues I’m having problems with: \setuppapersize[A6] \setuppagenumbering[location=,] \definelinenote[Critico] \setupnote[Critico][paragraph=yes] \setupnotation[Critico][alternative=serried, compress=yes, compressseparator=, width=broad] \newcounter\Contadorvar \def\apcritico#1#2{\increment\Contadorvar% \startCritico[Varia:\Contadorvar]{#2}#1% \stopCritico[Varia:\Contadorvar]} \starttext \startlinenumbering \dorecurse{22}{\apcritico{origin}{variant} \apcritico{not original,}{variant} } \stoplinenumbering \stoptext If compressseparator is suppressed (such as in the sample), the space before the missing separator is removed, but the space after the separator remains. This default is buggy when the compressed linenote starts at the beginning of the line (as it is the case on lines 4-9 in the apparatus). But even with linenotes starting at other places in the critical apparatus, there is another issue: compressed linenotes have more blank space before than uncompressed ones. I think this might be visually misleading in some cases. I think there is a simple way to solve both issues: if compressseparator is set to none, the space after should be removed in all cases. Would it be possible to implement this? Hans, I’m afraid that your patch fixes Wolfgang’s sample, but not mine. Now I understand what was required here and what \prewordbreak does (modifying strc-ref.mkvi was Greek to me). This fixes the issue with my command. [NTG-context] revert to an older install not working?
Dear list, after the missing file in the latest beta, I wanted to revert the installation back to previous beta (2013.07.14). I tried it with the following command: ./first-setup.sh --context=2013.07.14 But it gives the following error: rsync: change_dir "/current/context/2013.07.14" (in minimals) failed: No such file or directory (2) Am I missing something or revert to an older install is disabled?
