Thank you, Joaquin, for this wonderfully systematic bit of work. I wish I had 
had this three or four years ago.

There has been a bit of a discussion here about whether ConTeXt manuals should 
start from the assumption that the reader already is familiar with LaTeX or 
not. If I may cast a vote here: I recommend that authors *SHOULD NOT* assume 
such familiarity, because

(1) Knowledge of LaTeX is not just irrelevant, but can actually confuse.

(2) ConTeXt is a complete system in itself that is built up in a more 
consistent way than LaTeX. It does not depend on LaTeX in any way, and authors 
should not risk creating the impression that it does.

Of course there’s nothing wrong if someone were to write parallel materials for 
LaTeX users (‘ConTeXt for LaTeX Users’, or something of the sort). But 
basically LaTeX ought to be ignored completely. I, for one, do not want to have 
anything to do with LaTeX any more, now that ConTeXt is there.

Now that this new manual exists, I can more confidently recommend ConTeXt to 
colleagues.

I submitted the PDF to the publisher already last August. At the time I was not 
yet aware of this happy development in MkIV, and so the book was made with MkII 
using XeTeX as the backend. But in view of the various advances that were made 
with MkIV, I hope to make the next book using that one.

For the recent book I had no great need for Indic hyphenation patterns, because 
all the Kannada text fragments were quite short and hyphenation could be done 
manually. But for longer texts (as I have in mind in an upcoming book), the

[NTG-context] a new book has been published, made with the help of ConTeXt

Dear readers,

With great joy and a sense of relief I can now announce that my latest book, _A 
Manual of Modern Kannada_ by Robert Zydenbos (Heidelberg / Berlin: CrossAsia 
E-Publishing, 2020), a teaching manual of the Kannada language (Kannada belongs 
to the Dravidian family of languages, mainly spoken in southern India; also in 
the city of Bangalore, the 'Silicon Valley of India') has been published. It is 
an Open Access publication, which means it is available as a gratis download in 
PDF format from 
https://crossasia-books.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/xasia/catalog/book/736 (the 
clickable button “Buch herunterladen” means “Download book”; “Buch kaufen” 
means “Buy book”, for those who want a real book on paper).

I was working on this book for the past few years and decided that the only 
affordably sensible way to achieve presentable results would be to use TeX, but 
plain TeX was too cumbersome, and in LaTeX the tables were difficult (and the 
book has many, many tables in various shapes and sizes). ConTeXt was The 
Solution (and has been duly mentioned in the technical note at the end of the 
book, with special thanks to Hans, Wolfgang and Pablo for valuable suggestions).

For those who are curious how I used ConTeXt MkII with the XeTeX backend, a

I tried Wolfgang's amendment (see his posting) just now using MacTeX 2020, and 
the plain LuaTeX without Harfbuzz worked well too.

[NTG-context] Indic fonts with MkIV and

Dear all,

Recently I read about the use of Harfbuzz-enhanced LuaTeX with LaTeX for 
writing Arabic. Following that example, I wrote a minimal test text that worked 
excellently for Kannada script as well:

I want to do this in ConTeXt too! Can anyone tell me how to translate 
“\setmainfont{Kedage}[RawFeature={mode=harf;script=knda;}]” into ConTeXt? This 
could be the key to using MkIV with Indic scripts.

That helps!

But in any case, it looks like the problems are actually several (also the one 
of the precise order of the words in the index), and I think the 'fastest' 
solution for now is that I just compile the index (only 4 pages), make a 
separate component file and rearrange the contents by copy-and-paste. Not the 
most elegant of solutions, but it works. :-)

[NTG-context] formatting index entries: alphabetical order in Unicode

I seem to have a problem with Unicode in the indexing function for my book: a 
word like āyitu (beginning with an 'a' with a macron over it) is considered a 
word that starts with a 'y'; the word īga (beginning with an i with a macron) 
is placed as if it is 'ga'.

Is there any way to tell the indexing function how to deal with such special 
characters?

Strange, in MkIV I get an error message which I do not understand, because by 
the look of it, your code (I called the file 'indexpablo.tex') seems in order – 
but in MkII (which I need) it works.

[NTG-context] formatting index entries

Dear list members,

In my book I am creating an index. I know that there are commands for 
formatting index entries, like:

\index{sl::īga}

if I want the word 'īga' to be printed in slanted type. I also know that we can 
create sub-entries, like

\index{īga+emphasized}

But now I want the word 'īga' to be slanted, but not the word 'emphasized'. I 
have tried things like \index{sl::īga+rm::emphasized}, but I can't figure this 
out.

Any suggestions?

Still nicer would be the following, but I do not know whether this is 
technically possible –

I have the following text:

% start of example: in chapter 4, pp. 38, I have
\subject [wild-stuff]{Wild stuff}
Now comes a lot of weird stuff which I want to refer to later.
…
% end of stuff in one chapter

% in another chapter:
As we already saw in \in{chapter}[wild-stuff], on p.~\at[wild-stuff]
% that was in the other chapter
% end of example

and the result would be: “As we already saw in chapter 4, on p.~38”…

Can such a thing be done?

Hmm… although I got your example to work after some tweaking (changing 
\samplefile to {input and placing knuth.tex and zapf.tex in the same folder as 
the test file), I could not reproduce this with my book. I want to get "chapter 
4" but keep getting "chapter 4.0".

Is this because I am using MkII with XeTeX?

automatize cross references to chapters. I’ve already figured out how to refer 
to pages (using “\at[REFERENCE]”), but how is this done with chapters? I’m 
apparently too simple-minded to understand the manual (and I don’t understand 
the differences between \reference, \textreference, \in, \about).

Aha. I didn’t find that in contextref.pdf (2013 edition). But it works!

What does disturb me, however, is that I have this one chapter where the wrong 
note number is indicated (note 19 is referred to as note '18'), and I do not 
know why. Could it be that this is because earlier in the chapter I have also 
used

\setupnote [localnote] [location=none]
…
\startlocalfootnotes[conversion=characters,n=0]
…
\placenotes [localnote]
\stoplocalfootnotes

and that this somehow interferes with the referencing of other footnotes? That 
is the only difference I see between this chapter and the others.

[NTG-context] referencing a footnote

Another footnote question for the experts. I want to refer to a note from 
within another, later note. I thought I could do this in the following way:

…
\footnote[uvu-avu]{These two suffixes […]
…
\footnote{See n.~\note[uvu-avu].}
…

But I get this result:



There are two things wrong:

(1) I want to get a result that looks like “See n. 18.”, with a number that is 
not superscript. (This happens when I try such referencing in other notes as 
well as in the main text.)
(2) The number is wrong: it is footnote #19, not 18.

I *could* work around this problem by totally different means – but I would 
much prefer to reference notes more or less in the manner I tried above. What 
could I improve in my code?

can comment out line 12 in manual-environment-xasia.tex and de-comment line 13 
to turn the font into Times (or you can change the name of the font to anything 
you have on your computer). 

Right now I am using an iMac with the latest OS installed.

The 'footnotes' will be placed at the end of the chapters (i.e., they will be 
endnotes).

If you run sample.tex through ConTeXt and XeTeX (i.e., MkII) and look at the 
final page, you will see that the footnote / endnote marker has not been reset.

Not really. My requirements are rather dull and limited. I was attracted to 
ConTeXt for its simplicity in changing paper formats, in changing the formats 
of headings (section, subsection etc.), the ease with which index entries can 
be formatted, and above all for its beautiful table possibilities. The book I 
am working on is full of tables in various formats and lengths.

That (and the footnotes :-) ) covers just about all my typesetting needs. I had 
already prepared numerous smaller documents as practice before I started to 
process the book with ConTeXt, was delighted with the results, and so I thought 
that I could manage the book too (before the end of this month…).

Pablo's example works well on my machine. So there must be a disturbance at a 
different level in my complex text – perhaps in my settings:

\setupnotedefinition [footnote] [location=serried, distance=1em, hang=1em]

or

\setupfootnotes[bodyfont={Mainfont,8pt}, width=\textwidth, frameoffset=1em, 
location=none, way=bychapter]

which in all other respects work fine? ('Mainfont' is my own definition, from a 
typescript; I also added 'way=bychapter', to no effect.) The only thing that 
does not happen is the resetting of the note counter.

If I had a command that simply says "the counter named X (=footnote counter) is 
now 0 again", which I could insert at the beginning of every chapter, the 
problem would be solved. (Not so elegant, but it would be a solution.)

Sorry, neither of these work (MkII with XeTeX). I get no error messages with 
Pablo's suggestion, but not the desired result either.

Perhaps I need a very primitive command that I can insert at the beginning of

Thank you! I didn’t know I already had this updated version of a document I’ve 
already been using. But however useful this document already is, it does

Surely this is fine for those who have been working on ConTeXt for years at a 
very low coding level. But I see this and ask myself: “indicator of what? 
distance to what?” etc. (Sometimes, when confronted with such information, I 
just play around a bit with changing parameters and see what happens: sometimes 
I discover the meanings, sometimes I don’t.)

‘\setupnote’ inherits from ‘\setupframed’. There one finds

…
profile = NAME
empty = yes no
…

and similar questions arise: “what kind of profile?”, “what is empty or not?” 
etc.

Unfortunately the source browser on the Wiki is out of order, otherwise that 
might have helped.

Suggestion / request: all the ConTeXt source files are, of course, read and 
processed in a particular order. It would surely be useful if someone could 
indicate where this chain begins. Anybody who would be interested in sorting 
out the workings of ConTeXt and writing a manual (no, I am not making any 
promises yet :-) ) could then trace how one command leads to another, another, 
another… and how the entire system is built up.

ConTeXt is great. Let me make that clear right way. I think it's the future of 
TeX. I'm already doing things in ConTeXt that I dread trying to do in LaTeX or 
any other system. But (yes, of course there was a 'but' coming) the one thing 
that is missing, the one obstacle which I think exists for ConTeXt gaining 
wider currency, is really good documentation.

Take this last question of mine which Pablo solved: I had to put a certain 
parameter in  \setupnotedefinition  [footnote]. First I did it wrongly, putting 
it in \setupnote [footnote] (why? because the names of the values, like 
'location', look so much alike). So what goes into \setupnotedefinition and 
what goes into \setupnote? How do I know? (How does Pablo know this? Maybe he 
can tell me off-list. :-) ) Many of the commands are not, or badly, documented 
in the otherwise useful Wiki. What are all the parameters that are recognized 
by the various commands, and just what do they mean? What are the default 
settings? ConTeXt looks like an object oriented programming language with 
inheritances, but it is unclear just what is inherited from where, and why.

I appreciate all the effort made by various people to provide documentation and 
demos. But I think the cause of ConTeXt would be greatly served if someone 
would bring out a hierarchic list of the ConTeXt commands with a brief 
description of what the commands and the parameters do and why they exist at 
all, so that the reader gets an idea of the structure of the whole system and 
the philosophy behind it (i.e., explaining why it is thus structured and why it 
works).

Once again: I think ConTeXt is great, and so is this forum, which is a huge 
help. I also realize ConTeXt is complex and that the great people behind it 
also have other things to do in life. But still: maybe the kind of 
documentation I propose would help to make things still a bit greater?

Thank you for your sample, Pablo – because you left out something that I had 
wrongly included, and that evidently is what caused the trouble.

I had \footnote everywhere in my text and wanted not to change all of them to 
\endnote but, instead, I had put a \setupfootnotes[location=text] at the top of 
the file and a \placenotes [footnote] at the bottom, where I wanted the notes 
to appear. (Why? Because I could not figure out how to keep the proper font 
formatting if I used \endnote without adding an explicit font command at the 
beginning of each endnote.)

That apparently was a mistake. It was solved by \setupfootnotes[location=none].

frame runs off the last page.

That was useful! But now I would like to go another step further: in the 
following, slightly altered example, I use a footnote and endnotes. I know that 
with "\setupfootnotes [conversion=characters]" the footnote markers are changed 
to letters instead of numbers. Is there any way of doing this also for 
endnotes? (N.B.: I am using MkII.)

[NTG-context] two questions about endnotes

First question: I am considering using endnotes in my book instead of 
footnotes. There is a command \endnote, but I do not see the notes appear 
anywhere in my text. What am I doing wrong?

Perhaps it is useful that I mention that this is a MkIV problem on my iMac with 
TeXLive (2018 version). Using MkII, also with XeTeX, everything ran right out 
of the box. For MkIV, I had to run a program to let LuaTeX find all the fonts, 
and then it worked.

[NTG-context] reading ConTeXt source code

of commands, the dependencies, inheritances and the defaults are. Is there any 
file where I can see the order in which all the .mkii / .mkiv files are read?

[NTG-context] keeping together \subject and a table without a page break

I am looking for a way to keep a subject header and a following table together 
on one page, without a page break. Something like:

would also need this for \startTABLE.)

On the wiki I found a command \blank[samepage], but this does not seem to work 
(at least not in MkII), because the parameter 'samepage' is not recognized.

I would be very grateful for suggestions.

A question for the hardcore members. On http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Manuals I 
read:

ConTeXt Sources (MkII)

Apart from the manuals, the source files (especially, some of the old ones) 
contain excellent documentation and examples. If you want a pretty printed pdf 
of a source file, say core-rul.tex, you can type
 texmfstart texexec --module kpse:core-rul.tex

But this apparently doesn’t work any more (i.e., I simply entered that line in 
the Mac terminal and nothing happened). Am I doing something wrong?

just curious: what do you mis in mkiv / luatex


Support for Indic scripts / fonts. (I think we had a little bit of 
correspondence on this mailing list three or four years ago about this, 
and we were not able to convert and use the TrueType fonts I required.)

Kannada. This is one of the world's larger languages, belonging to the 
Dravidian language family, spoken in the southern Indian state of 
Karnataka (its capital city Bangalore / Bengaluru is known outside India 
mainly as the centre of India's IT industry).


I am about to finish writing the first comprehensive modern teaching 
manual of the language for non-Indian learners, and this is the kind of 
book that one can hardly leave to typesetters. First I was thinking of 
producing the ready-to-print PDF in XeLaTeX, but… oh, well, we're among 
ourselves here, so I think I need not go into the details of why I 
prefer to do it in ConTeXt. :-)

It works! Thank you for the solution.

One thing that puzzles me, however, is that you (Wolfgang) are able to 
produce solutions using (so it seems) undocumented commands and 
parameters. How did you hit upon the idea to use 'rulecolor' here? I 
rely on the ConTeXt manual (2013 version), and there is nothing there to 
suggest that 'rulecolor' determines the colour of the text of footnotes. 
Neither did the Wiki help me.


Is there some hidden documentation I do not know about?

Today I wanted to print an entire document not in standard black, but in 
blue. I added (Mk II) –


\setupcolors [state=start]
\define\kleur{blue} % so I can change the colour uniformly everywhere 
through this variable

\startcolor [\kleur]
\setupnote[footnote][before={\color[\kleur]}]
\setupfooter [color=\kleur]

– and everything becomes blue, but NOT the footnote number before the 
footnote itself at the bottom of the page (the marker in the main text 
is coloured the way I want).


Can anyone tell me how to change the colour of the footnote number in 
the note?

I would like to, but I need to use TrueType fonts for Indian scripts in
my work that are supported in XeTeX but not (yet) in LuaTeX.

As an experiment, I tried to use the so-called 'long s' in a Fraktur
font, which comes out well in XeTeX with LaTeX, but I must be doing
something wrong in ConTeXt.

[NTG-context] ConTeXt is looking for a non-existent .bbl file (Mac problem?)

Yesterday I tried to create a fresh PDF from a revised text using MkII and 
XeTeX (I have been using this combination for several months, because I need to 
use Indic fonts, which are not  -- yet? -- supported in MkIV). As a trick I 
defined an Indic font as a mono font (\tt), so that automatically the size 
would be adjusted correctly in footnotes etc.

To my horror, it no longer works. I stripped down my input file to one called 
kannada-test.tex, and still I got the bizarre error message file 
kannada-test.bbl not found, waiting for bibtex, and texexec (or a process it 
invokes) freezes. I have never used bibtex input in these documents.

Below I am including the error log. I have changed nothing in the input files 
besides alterations in the text to be printed (not in any commands). The only 
thing that has changed is that in the meantime I installed the new version of 
MacTeX (2014; previously I was using 2013). I removed the entire MacTeX 2014 
version and installed it afresh, but this did not help either.

It seems to be a Mac problem. Ubuntu (14.04) also looks for a bbl file, but 
simply passes over it if none is found (see attachment).

I would be very grateful for suggested solutions. I was using this to prepare 
materials for classes (fortunately we have a recess until April right now).

How do I create hyperlinks within a PDF to another spot in the text of that 
same PDF? I had expected I could do something like:

Sorry, Hans, but I need to use odd fonts for Indian languages that are not 
(yet?) supported by mkiv. But the combination ConTeXt mkii+XeTeX gives me 
beautiful results, so for the time being I'm trying to solve my few remaining 
problems and to produce my book that way.

This is a topic that is of great interest to me. I have been trying to make 
tables in mkii (because I need XeTeX for my Indic fonts) that span across pages 
and in which cells are more than one line (so I use the 'p' parameter).

[NTG-context] ConTeXt, XeTeX, special effects in Indic font for Kannada

On my Mac (Mountain Lion) I would like to use ConTeXt with a complex OpenType 
font named Kedage for the Indian language Kannada, and I thought that I could 
do this using XeTeX (because LuaTeX seems unable to handle Indic fonts at 
present).

This freely available font (found on Linux systems, for instance) comes in four 
files: Kedage-n.TTF, Kedage-b.TTF, Kedage-i.TTF, Kedage-t.TTF (normal, bold, 
italic and bolditalic, respectively).

I have been partly successful with the simple command

\definefontsynonym[kan][name:Kedage]

and then using

\definedfont[kan]

where I want to have the font in the text. Also \font\kannada=Kedage (and 
\kannada later in the text) seems to work well without any further indications 
of language, script etc.

However, I would also like to use the bold, italic and bolditalic forms of the 
font. Simply using \bold and \em does not work.

Here I see two possibilities:

(1) use the XeTeX parameters FakeSlant and FakeBold, which I have done in 
LaTeX. But I do not know how this is done in ConTeXt.

(2) use the other font files (Kedage-b.TTF etc.), and again I do not know how 
to do this.

Can anybody help me out, either way? (I have attached a sample.)

The slanting and stretched effects come out nicely -- but the complex 
combinations of the signs are not supported as they are in XeTeX. XeTeX 
supports the combinations, but not the effects (see attachments 
hagen-kan-luatex.pdf and hagen-kan-xetex.pdf).

 (2) use the other font files (Kedage-b.TTF etc.), and again I do not know 
 how to do this.

No, unfortunately that one doesn't work so well (see attachment 
hagen-kan1-luatex.pdf).

 in context, there is experimental support for devanagari
 \definedfont[file:kedage-n*devanagari-one]
 
 but it all depends on what the font provides

Is there any way to find out the font's possibilities, if one doesn't have any 
technical documentation about it?

[NTG-context] how to avoid hyphenation

Greetings all,

Is there a simple way in ConTeXt to temporarily switch off hyphenation for a 
single word? I am thinking of something like the trick which works in (La)TeX: 
\hbox{thisisaverylongword}. I tried this in ConTeXt (MacTeX TeXLive 2010-64), 
but without success.
