[NTG-context] Quotation mark in drop caps
Hi list! I have a three-part question. First, when using \placeinitial, how would you detect whether the first character is a quotation mark, and, if so, override the setupinitial to use m=2? Second, when using m=2 to capture a quotation mark, how would you change the font size of only the quotation mark, leaving the font size for the remaining characters the same? Third, can this be accomplished using setupinitial alone? Such as: \setupinitial[ quotefont=\SmallerFont, quotecolour=\QuoteColour, ] A few typographic examples of what I'd like to accomplish: Re: https://i.ibb.co/7rJYBS6/initial-Matching-Quotes.gif Re: https://i.ibb.co/Hz8v5w4/atlantips-drop-caps-and-quotation-marks-10.png My understanding of what exists in ConTeXt: \starttext \startchapter % This detaches the quotation mark from the paragraph, which looks strange. \placeinitial "We held ConTeXt in high esteem." \stopchapter \startchapter % This looks great. \placeinitial \input knuth \stopchapter \startchapter % I'd like to eliminate this next line. \setupinitial[m=2] % The quotation mark is a drop cap, albeit too big. \placeinitial "We held ConTeXt in high esteem." \stopchapter \startchapter % I'd like to eliminate this next line. \setupinitial[m=1] % The setups are reinitialized, which in theory should not be needed. \placeinitial \input knuth \stopchapter \stoptext Here's how I'd like to typeset the document (using setupinitial alone): \setupinitial[ % When a quotation mark is detected, the given font is applied to it. quotefont=\SmallerFont, % Not necessary, but could be useful to other people? quotecolour=\QuoteColour, ] \starttext \startchapter % The quotation mark gets attached and applies the smaller font size. \placeinitial "We held ConTeXt in high esteem." \stopchapter \startchapter % Only captures the first letter, because no quotation mark is present. \placeinitial \input knuth \stopchapter \stoptext Is this possible? If so, how? My current book contains a lot of quotations with their sources marked as footnotes, e.g. \definedelimitedtext[Zitat][ %setups=Zitat, % doesn’t work!? left=», right=«, leftmargin=2em, rightmargin=1.5em, ] \startZitat A rose is a rose is a rose.\footnote{Marx brothers} \stopZitat Now, since the quotations are whole sentences or paragraphs, the footnote marker needs to be placed _after_ the closing quotation mark. (German typography, I learned it’s different at least in US English.) I tried several approaches e.g. with my own single start/stop macros that call \start/stopnarrower or \start/stopZitat – that always lead to unclosed environments. * Only the delimitedtext approach gives a hanging opening quotation mark (which looks nice and I’d like to have). * \stopnarrower within a macro doesn’t seem to work (all following text stays narrower). * I can’t get rid of that space introduced by the CR before \stop – didn’t find a place where \gobblespacetokens works, maybe that’s the wrong command. Most preferred would be a solution that checked if there’s a footnote in front of \stopZitat and would put the closing quotation mark in front instead of after. Without a footnote it would just place the mark. Something like \stopZitat\footnote{...} would also be nice, but I guess that’s too far outside of TeX’s logic. In the worst case I’d need to typeset the closing mark manually. Some hints please? [NTG-context] Quotation dash issues with semantic markup
Any of you able to help me get my quotation dashes into line when automatically inserted by the semantic commands? I'm sure a number of you look at this style and cringe, but A. I'm not looking for grammatical input, and B. I'm intending this for a non-English language where the quotation dash (though still not most common) isn't as out of place. See attachment for actual examples, but I'm looking for a dash at each side of the quotation, /except/ at the very end of a paragraph. I additionally want dialogue tags (via \aside, and located within quotations) to not print their surrounding decoration if they're directly next to the larger dash of the quotation. Unfortunately, the only way I can think of doing the first is by checking if the next token's \par, and that gets thrown off by the internal logic of \quotation; I'm not at all sure how to start going about the asides. It would also be nice if a quote ending in a period carried the 'broad' spacing to the other side of the (ending) quote dash -- the dash before 'Also' in the examples would be packed on the left and broad on the right. I know this might be a lot trickier to code, and only consider it a bonus. An additional issue with \removeunwantedspaces only seems to affect the command forms. When inserted directly, the spacing acts as desired in the PDF (as expected, the XML doesn't understand the order). Also, the right |>| doesn't require either of the explicit spacing instructions (beyond being non-breaking) while the others do. The quotation dash itself only /looks/ as I want it; when I highlight and copy the text or export it to the XML backend, it's still two dashes next to each other. [NTG-context] quotation/blockquote bug
Dear syndicate, There is a bug in \quotation and/or \blockquote (pdf attached): there is a spurious dbl-quote mark at the end of the par that only occurs when \quotation is invoked. Please advise, workarounds welcome :-) Best wishes Idris % engine=luatex \starttext \startblockquote The now also must be indivisible: that is, the now in the essential and primary sense in which the now is inherent in all time; not, indeed, the now in the derived sense of a period of time…This now, which functions as the border between both past and future, must, indeed, be identical….If the now were separate limits [of both the past and the future], there would be a time between them, since every [real] continuum must have something of the same kind between its limits; and the time between them would be divisible, since we have proved that all time is divisible. Accordingly, the now would be divisible [and it would not, then, be the now we are talking about]….Thus, it is clear that time includes something indivisible, which we call a \quotation{now.} Obviously, too, nothing can be moving during a now. \stopblockquote \stoptext -- Professor Idris Samawi Hamid, Editor-in-Chief International Journal of Shi`i Studies Department of Philosophy Colorado State University Fort Collins, CO 80523 -- Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/ qabas-test.pdf Description: Adobe PDF document ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : https://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

[NTG-context] quotation
Hi, I need guillemots instead of lowerleftdouble- and upperrightdoublequotes in the German environment. On my minimal installation (Linux) I managed to change that by editing the cont-sys.tex file in texmf-local/tex/context/user. At work, on a Mac with gwTeX, nothing I tried had any effect: editing the cont-sys.tex file (in texmf.pkgs/tex/context/user) copying cont-sys.tex to texmf.texlive/tex/context/user editing the lang-ger.tex files (in texmf.pkgs or texmf.texlive) Thanks for the help, Jörg PS 1: I didn't forget texhash PS 2: It's the first time I have to use the German environment. Are lowerleftquotes and quotations really still used? To me they look strange -- at least in a scientific text. And my publisher doesn't want them either (ok, he is Swiss). ___ ntg-context mailing list ntg-context@ntg.nl http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context
