Does this mean I can still use those charts to look for periods of high usage,

autologout, but I don't understand the bahaviour. If I try
to connect after an ntopng restart, can't see anything until I log in. After
autologout, I can still access a lot of things in the gui. And why is there no
login button to log back in?

I submitted the bug soon after posting here, and it was reported fixed last
week. I updated ntopng this morning and the time axis now displays dates for
ranges longer than 2 days.
