Re: [nysbirds-l] American Flamingos in New York State

2024-06-03 Thread leormand
The Long Island Advance 16 November 1978nyshistoricnewspapers.orgHere is a link to a LI Advance article regarding the Bellport flamingo, complete with a photo. On Jun 3, 2024, at 8:34 AM, Shaibal Mitra wrote:

Thanks to Zach for reminding me of this more recent report.

Please add to the list another one as well, from Long Island ornithologist Peg Hart, who found an American Flamingo at her home in Bellport as a child! That this one has managed to remain overlooked is in part a consequence of Manny Levine's overly "rigorous"
editorial approach in Bull's Birds (1998), in which even Bull's "Hypothetical" category was purged. Peg worked with me in the late 90s when I was running the field station at Fire Island Lighthouse, so this story must have come up at some point and
thus my faulty memory is probably also partly to blame.

11 Nov 1978, Bellport (Peat Hole), Suffolk County

Peg Hart, pers. comm. and The Advance (archives): “I grew up in a house next to the Peat Hole in Bellport; my mom still lives there. One day in the, I was playing in the yard and looked up to see a beautiful flamingo standing in the shallow water, near
the sluiceway to the bay. I was 11 and ran excitedly to tell my dad who came out to see for himself. Dad called Art Cooley and much excitement ensued! Our yard was very lively that week and while many photographs were taken, we would be hard pressed to locate
 one.”

The Kingbird 29: 57-58; Barbara J. Spencer

“The origin and status of an American Flamingo in good plumage, found in Bellport Nov. 11 and seen frequently in the Bellport-Brookhaven area for two weeks, is unknown. Three late fall occurrences in Canada (1969, 1973, 1977) have been thought to have been
 storm-related vagrants by some.”

It may be worth adding to these the report from October 1 of last year of a bird flying up the Hudson in northern Ulster county:
https://ebird.org/checklist/S151204238.
Many region 8 birders staked out various spots among the river, but did not relocate a flamingo.

In the excitement over the potential addition of American Flamingo to the New York State Checklist, people have been curious about prior records. As far as I am aware, there have been four prior occurrences of American Flamingo. All of these were doubted as
natural vagrants at the time, but no evidence of captive origin is cited in any of the cases (except for "faded plumage" in one case), and what is known of the dates and locations of their occurrences actually appear consistent with natural vagrancy. In particular,
the records from 1964 and 1965 occurred during a period of multiple occurrences in nearby Massachusetts and elsewhere.

[nysbirds-l] Where do ravens go - brookhaven

2019-04-19 Thread leormand
Yesterday (4-18-19) John Turner and I took a tour of the Brookhaven landfill
including a drive to the top. Much to our surprise we observed at least 6
ravens (they all appeared paired up).

Ravens were observed feeding and being chased by various gull species. I’m not
aware of any raven nests immediately adjacent to the landfill but know they
have been in Patchogue and Farmingville (town hall) and other surrounding areas
in recent years.

[nysbirds-l] EPCAL and downtown Riverhead

I had a few minutes to drive through EPCAL and was disappointed to miss all
species of raptor. On my way out I had a half dozen or so bluebirds hanging in
the trees along the entrance way, just north of the lake.

Spending the afternoon in the Hyatt’s ballroom overlooking the river I watched
a pair of turkey vultures cruise back and fourth for a few hours. I also
observed a bald eagle On the south side of the river perched in a tree (this
sighting is 90% confident as the bird was at quite a distance with no

[nysbirds-l] Bald Eagle: Swan river and great South Bay - Patchogue

2020-04-17 Thread leormand
This morning I ran to the Town Dock at the end of Pine Neck Ave in E Patchogue.
This is where the swan river enters the Great South Bay.

There is an osprey tower with a pair of osprey (first year for a pair). A
subadult (probably 2nd year) bald eagle flew above and was chased off by an
Osprey. A pair of killdeer were on the western sand spit and there was a
flyover by a single Glossy Ibis

[nysbirds-l] Middle island and e Patchogue

2020-05-05 Thread leormand
An afternoon walk in a small open patch of woods near Pine Lake off Church lane
yielded a number of black throated warblers, Baltimore Orioles courting and
cardinals fighting for territory. A 2nd year bald eagle was seen flying near
whiskey road roundabout where it caught the attention of a red tailed hawk.

Late afternoon at the end of Pine Neck Rd were 2 glossy ibis joined by a great
egret in a small wetland north of the marina. An osprey fed on a fish near its
nesting tower and a few willets were on the exposed flats

[nysbirds-l] Eastport Meadows, Eastport NY

2020-05-15 Thread leormand
Late this morning I made a stop along the southwest side of “Eastport Meadows”
a large Town of Brookhaven open space parcel south of Sunrise Highway, North of
Montauk Highway. The Eastport Athletic Complex is in the northeast corner for
reference.

In a section of open woods I found a black and white warbler and several
woodpeckers While bushwhacking through pine scrub forest I stumbled upon an
eastern towhee nest.

The open successional forest held an eastern meadowlark, more towhees and
singing prairie warblers.

I then walked a bit of the dirt road under the LIPA wires and had dozens of
cedar waxwings taking turns drinking from puddles, a screeching red-tailed
hawk, a hummingbird flitting around Oak trees, several blue winged warblers,
yellow warblers and American redstarts.

I’d imagine early morning under the right conditions would yield an even better
array of birds. Ironically, when I got home to my suburban yard my wife called
me over to look at a “red bird with black wings”. It’s the first scarlet
tanager I’ve ever seen after all my years looking.

[nysbirds-l] Mill road - Yaphank

2020-05-26 Thread leormand
I walked some town and county open space properties on either side of Mill Rd
in Yaphank today. The northern side Is a successional cedar forest and aside
from ticks didn’t seem to hold much activity other than chipping sparrows and a
surprise flyover by a glossy ibis. There was at least one indigo bunting but I
suspect many more given size of property and habitat.

The south side is typical pine oak forest and held the expected species
including a few great views of oven birds. I also stumbled upon a female turkey
and her young poults.

[nysbirds-l] Patchogue and Bellport

2021-04-02 Thread leormand
A pair of eagles was recently seen on a nest in Patchogue village atop a
communications tower. Osprey had been harassing the eagles since their return
and today the osprey pair were tending to the nest. A similar series of events
happened last year atop a communications tower in Sayville. I would assume this
to be the same pair of eagles.

I spotted a pair of eagles (presumably the village pair) kiting above Robinsons
Pond in E Patchogue early this afternoon.

At the Bellport docks, a lone common loon was in the bay along with 5 red
breasted mergansers (1 male, 4 female).

[nysbirds-l] swan river preserve - east patchogue

I spent some time at Swan River Preserve in East Patchogue this afternoon.
It was very quiet - however there were two (2) pairs of green-winged teal
duck and I was happily surprised to find and watch a Wilson's Snipe feeding
away on the south side.

Additionally, yesterday (1/21/17) I observed a merlin on Bay Avenue, near
the Great South Bay. I presume this is the neighborhood Merlin that has
hungout in this area the past few winters.

[nysbirds-l] Eastport meadows

2017-05-17 Thread leormand
I visited Eastport Meadows around noon today. Despite it being mid-day, there
were many vocal and active birds including: prairie warbler, blue-winged
warblers, yellow warbler, catbirds and mockingbirds

This is a very large former farm field / red cedar forest on the south side of
Sunrise highway, north of montauk highway in Eastport. There's a large parking
lot at the Town ball fields for access. This property has many informal trails
from off road vehicles - also has plenty of ticks.

[nysbirds-l] Montauk - dead shearwaters

2017-06-22 Thread leormand
On a 1.5 mile walk between Essex Ave and Ditch Plains I observed at least 15
deceased shearwaters - almost all of which were entangled in seaweed.

Additionally, there was a long-tailed duck on the beach at Ditch Plains. A dog
chased it into the ocean where it swam for a bit before coming back to shore.
It allowed for extremely close approach though I did not see any clear
injuries. It's obviously healthy enough to run/walk and swim but seemed to
prefer the beach where it was preening itself.

Also observed were several colonies of bank swallows in the hoodoos.

[nysbirds-l] cupsogue beach - westhampton

2017-11-25 Thread leormand .
A high noon walk down Cupsogue beach turned up a piping plover loosely
associating with a flock of Sanderlings. There was also a semi-palmated
plover with this group. Two loon flyovers between ocean and beach was the
only other thing of interest.

[nysbirds-l] Large mixed duck flock - Patchogue village

2017-12-17 Thread leormand
There was a large raft of ducks (mostly scaup and buffleheads) just east of
mascot dock in the village of Patchogue. The location is next to Lombardi’s on
the bay, just south of shore front dock. Birds often times feeding feet from
the boardwalk but also spooked easily. They were there at 10:30 AM and again at
4:00 PM

[nysbirds-l] dune road

2018-01-06 Thread leormand .
This afternoon I drove the length of Dune road and spent a little time at
the inlet. It was dead low tide at the inlet and there were a lot of ducks
feeding and getting out of the wind on the western side. Most appeared to
be red-breasted mergansers, but there were also surf scoters, black scoters
and the single numbers of various other winter waterfowl. No eiders
observed (though a few seals poppped up).

Dune Road yielded one extremely well hidden Snowy Owl as well as a number
of northern harriers include a grey ghost.

[nysbirds-l] Swan river - great (frozen) South Bay

2018-01-10 Thread leormand
On my morning run I went down to pine neck dock at the mouth of swan river in
East Patchogue. The bay is still frozen over and the mouth of the river had one
small pocket of open water remaining. A number of mute swans were loafing on
the ice and a few dozen ducks were swimming in the opening (I believe they were
scaup). One duck stood out which I soon realized was a golden eye.
If you’re in the area may be worth a visit to take some nice photos as the
opening is close to the dock (which is free of ice and snow).

Interestingly there is quite a bit of open water on swan river south of Swezey
Avenue bridge

A brief visit to EPCAL produced few birds. A pair of bluebirds bear the nesting
boxes, a couple red-tailed hawks and one kestrel were the only things
noteworthy.

On the way to the south shore I observed an adult bald eagle near Pleasure

Dune road was also quiet with no raptors seen. A red-breasted merganser was in
a roadside ditch providing unusually close views and large raft of common eider

[nysbirds-l] Snowy Owl - Shinnecock East

2013-12-15 Thread leormand .
This morning I drove through EPCAL - both runways and came up with nothing.
Didn't see any hawks, let alone Snowy Owls. I did see a couple
Meadowlarks but that was it, I even checked the radar station to the north.

In the mid-afternoon, I went to Dune Road and spied a Snowy Owl across the
inlet. I drove across to the other side where I found the bird and was
able to photograph it. A barking dog ended up spooking the bird away as it
flew off to a nearby island. Not sure if it's the same bird as yesterday,
though the markings look similar.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Dune Rd Snowy Owl - Yes

2014-01-12 Thread leormand .
To all of those who look (and find) Snowy Owls along Dune road, PLEASE do
not park your vehicle in the middle of the road and get out to look at the
bird with your scope. You're creating a hazard for yourself and others
(aside from it being illegal and frankly, rude). There was a red car in
particular this afternoon which made no attempt to pull to the side as it's
3-4 occupants got out with their scopes and proceeded to block the whole
road and look at the bird in the marsh.

There are ample areas to park that require little walking - if that is not
feasible at least pull your vehicle to the side of the road where there is
a sufficient shoulder.

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road / Shinnecock Inlet

2014-01-12 Thread leormand .
This afternoon I took a ride to Dune Road / Shinnecock Inlet.

The inlet held a nice raft which consisted of various scoter species and
Common Eiders as well as some fringe red-breasted mergansers. The
highlight was an immature male King Eider that I photographed
(accidentally).

The rest of Dune Road was really quiet - there was a Snowy Owl in the marsh
near the Bridge which was previously mentioned on this list. A northern
Harrier was found further west as well as a female Belted Kingfisher. I
noticed a very large number of gulls both over the ocean/on the beach where
large waves were crashing as well as perched on dredging equipment in the
bay. I'm sure some patience at either location would have produced
something good. As the sun set and I drove over the bridge, I noticed
another sizeable collection of gulls perched on the rocks of the coast
guard marina - it may be worth checking for all you gullheads out there

Photos of the birds - including the king eider can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] Smiths Point

2014-01-20 Thread leormand .
This afternoon my wife and I found a Snowy Owl @ Smith's point. No other
birds of note - though there was a large collection of gulls on the small
sandbars/islands @ the new old inlet. Gullheads would probably turn
something up.

Photos of the owl can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls in the Netherlands

2014-02-04 Thread leormand .
As has been previously reported through this listserv and a Canadian blog -
some snowy owls made it onto a freighter that left NY and hugged the coast
near Canada before heading to Europe. At least two of these birds are in
the Netherlands and are being regularly photographed - here is a link to a
photographers blog about the birds for those interested:

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road

2014-02-09 Thread leormand .
This afternoon along Dune Road I spotted 1 Snowy Owl on a duck blind
between Tiana and Dockers
Other birds seen here Black Crowned Night Herons and Great Blue Herons.
The Inlet was quiet - a raft of birds off one of the jetties but nothing
in close. A few red-breasted mergansers in the open (very calm) ocean.

Highlight was a Peregrine Falcon on the big tower at the Coast Guard
station. Photos of birds can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road - Saturday, March 22

2014-03-23 Thread leormand .
I forgot to mention this, but I did a trip down Dune Road yesterday (From
Ponquogue Bridge to the first Bridge in Westhampton) and basically saw
nothing. It was very quiet and very drab - though things should turn
around shortly, starting with Red-winged black birds.

What I did notice, however, were two ospreys occupying one nest platform,
just to the west of the Bridge in Westhampton (in the marshlands). I was
surprised to see two, assuming it's a male and a female as usually the
females come a bit after the males.

For anyone interested in seeing photos of the grey morph and red morph
screech owls from Massapequa Preserve - you can see them here:

[nysbirds-l] EPCAL - calverton

EPCAL was very quiet birdwise but there were a lot of Kestrels around on
the Western runway. I checked the old radar station on the north side of
25 and found even more Kestrels - there were probably 10 utilizing that
site. There are very few perches at the radar site due to a recent mowing
which seems to concentrate the birds.

Nothing else of note

[nysbirds-l] Patchogue

In a rather unusual sighting this afternoon, I was in the parking lot
between the YMCA and Briarcliff College (just south of Patchogue Lake) and
saw a breeding plumage Laughing Gull tempting fate by getting within a foot
of a Canada Goose that is nesting in the parking lot median.

An Osprey has been frequenting the Swan River just south of Montauk
Highway, either north or south of the LIRR tracks.

[nysbirds-l] Forge River Headwaters - Center Moriches

2014-05-06 Thread leormand .
This afternoon I spent some time at the headwaters of the Forge River -
there's a beautiful hiking trail on the south side which is accessible from
the sunrise highway service road - though there's no true place to "park"
(the opposite side of the river is private property).

The start of the river had 2 or 3 pairs of wood duck which were
particularly skittish. B&W Warblers, Blue-grey Gnatcatchers, a chipping
sparrow, black-capped chickadees, several species of woodpecker and eastern
towees.

Photos of the B&W warbler and chipping sparrow can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] bufflehead - swan river preserve - east patchogue

2014-11-29 Thread leormand .
While a bufflehead on long island in winter is not exactly notable - I'm
making this post to make birders aware of the new park in East Patchogue
called 'Swan River Preserve' which is on the southside of Montauk Highway,
next to friendlys (directly across the street from Swan Lake). The new
park has a small pond with a vegetated island in the middle making views of
any waterfowl within the pond excellent - as compared to the lake across
the street. Up until today I had only seen mallards in the pond.
Hopefully this actively feeding bufflehead is a sign of things to come.

Also the Bufflehead continues at Swan Pond Preserve. Any photographers out

really not a bad angle at that pond no matter where the bird is.

[nysbirds-l] dune road - EPCAL

2015-02-12 Thread leormand .
Dune road was very quiet today. Large portions of Tiana Bay are frozen
over with black ducks and gulls everywhere. Only saw one Northern Harrier
that we spooked from the shoulder of the road. Plenty of Scoters near the
inlet (on the west side of the jetty) but didn't spend the time to see if
anything interesting and unusual was in there.

EPCAL was very quiet (did a quick drive-thru) and security was posted at
the entrance to the runway. No sighting of the Artists' Lake/Patchogue
Lake bald eagle either. Patchogue lake did have a few Canvasback ducks
though

Also visited the mouth of the Carmans River - a few species of ducks
including coots. One Northern Harrier - but nothing else of note.

[nysbirds-l] Bald Eagles - Riverhead

2015-03-08 Thread leormand .
This morning in Riverhead I had an adult bald eagle behind the aquarium -
and apparently there was a subadult that had been there as well not too
long before I arrived. About 30 minutes later, further west along the
River were two sub-adults soaring high in the sky. I've heard there is at
least one more adult near the aquarium as well - probably 5-8 BE's in that
area on any given day.

Also in Riverhead along the Peconic River at the fishing access station
(just west of Roadhouse Pizza) were red-necked grebes on Saturday. None
were present this morning, but plenty of wood ducks and common mergansers,
among other waterfowl.

If anyone's interested in BE pictures, they can check them out on my

Yesterday at EPCAL I had several N. Harriers and a (presumably) mated pair
of Red-tailed hawks cooperatively hunting and successfully catching a

[nysbirds-l] Bald Eagle (nesting pair) Long Island

2015-03-29 Thread leormand .
All;

An Adult Bald Eagle (which is part of an actively nesting pair) spent a
good amount of time perched near the nest today along the South Shore of
Long Island (location undisclosed for now). After awhile it moved to a
perch a bit further from the nest - only for some Osprey to show which then
had to be chased off. I have some images and a short video on my blog:
http://birdsoflongisland.blogspot.com/2015/03/sit-and-wait-bald-eagle-edition.html

Swan River Preserve in East Patchogue had 1 Gadwall and a flycatcher
(species undetermined) and Bellport Docks had 1 Red-necked Grebe (winter
plumage) and some Buffleheads. A Northern Harrier was seen in Brookhaven
Hamlet over the marsh and at least 3 Osprey were seen in the river/lake
just south of Caanan Lake and just north of Sunrise Highway in Patchogue
this afternoon.

[nysbirds-l] Nest Bald Eagles - South Shore

2015-04-01 Thread leormand .
Around 11 AM this morning I checked out another reported Bald Eagle Nest
and found the "adult" in a tree near the nest (which was an old osprey nest
apparently). The other bird in the pair is not in full adult plumage -
which at the very least makes it easy to tell them apart. I watched the
"adult" bring some nesting material to the nest, as well as a nest
exchange. Both birds did some lazy chasing of nearby Osprey.

Around 6 PM I returned and the Adult was again perched on a nearby tree.
An Osprey nest across the creek (and very near me) apparently has a pair of
birds - though no eggs have been laid yet as far as I can tell and the nest
could use some more material. At one point, one Osprey went up the creek
and caught a fish (I didn't see this) which prompted to Eagle to give
chase. Not too long after, the Osprey dropped the fish and the Eagle
continued to chase the Osprey until the Osprey's partner came in and
everyone flew back to their respective nests.

Quite a few ducks around and some horned grebes as well but the Eagle
didn't seem interested.

The nest is publicly known, however the trail leading to it has been
blocked off. I viewed it from across the creek, though the access to that
point is not officially "open" yet and as such I will not disclose the
location so as to not encourage trespassing or additional stress on the
Osprey which are very near the viewing point.

Photos and some more info can be seen in this blog post:

[nysbirds-l] Nesting Bald Eagles - Great South Bay

2015-04-04 Thread leormand .
Yesterday (4/3) I went down to check on the Eagle nest. I saw 3 other
birders in the parking lot with Scopes. With one eagle on the nest I spent
a bit of time trying to find the other one, scanning trees and looking at
far off gulls soaring. After a bit I found the "adult" - it was perched on
a stick way out on the marsh. I suspect it was trying to stay low to avoid
the steady winds.

A few observations are in my blog related to interactions with the Eagle
and other species on the marsh as well as an Osprey. I have heard the
chicks are on schedule to hatch in the next 2-3 weeks, though I'm not too
confident given the lack of success at Wertheim and the fact that this is
the first nesting year for these birds (based on plumage).

Other birds seen were some Great Egrets, lots of corvids and some
mergansers.

A trip to Swan River Preserve (East Patchogue) via my run had a few Gadwall
in the pond. The Town Parks Department has also put up 4 interpretive
signs explaining the history of the site, the drainage system, the marsh
plants and other details.

Photos from yesterday's trip can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] EPCAL Kestrels - no snowy owl

2015-04-12 Thread leormand .
My wife and I looked (without much effort) along dune road for the Snowy
Owl and did not find it.

EPCAL (calverton grasslands) had a minimum of 30 Kestrel on the western
runway - with probably an equal amount on the easter (potentially a bit
less due to the operation of the skydive outfit today). The birds were
literally everywhere and there was a lot of movement. Plenty of red-tailed
hawks as well, only a few eastern meadowlarks.

2 Osprey at Woodhull dam in Riverside including one right above my head
patiently waiting for a fish to show up so it could pounce with as little
effort as possible.

Yesterday I visited one of the Long Island South Shore Bald Eagle nests.
The "adult" was way out on the marsh and sat there, refusing to move
despite osprey, crows and a few passing boats. There were at least 6
osprey in the vicinity, all posturing for territory and the nest across the
creek from the Eagle featured 2 birds with some courtship display including
"sky-dancing" and delivering a freshly caught fish.
