Re: [nysbirds-l] American Flamingos in New York State

2024-06-03 Thread leormand
The Long Island Advance 16 November 1978nyshistoricnewspapers.orgHere is a link to a LI Advance article regarding the Bellport flamingo, complete with a photo. On Jun 3, 2024, at 8:34 AM, Shaibal Mitra wrote:

Thanks to Zach for reminding me of this more recent report.

Please add to the list another one as well, from Long Island ornithologist Peg Hart, who found an American Flamingo at her home in Bellport as a child! That this one has managed to remain overlooked is in part a consequence of Manny Levine's overly "rigorous"
editorial approach in Bull's Birds (1998), in which even Bull's "Hypothetical" category was purged. Peg worked with me in the late 90s when I was running the field station at Fire Island Lighthouse, so this story must have come up at some point and
thus my faulty memory is probably also partly to blame.

11 Nov 1978, Bellport (Peat Hole), Suffolk County

Peg Hart, pers. comm. and The Advance (archives): “I grew up in a house next to the Peat Hole in Bellport; my mom still lives there. One day in the, I was playing in the yard and looked up to see a beautiful flamingo standing in the shallow water, near
the sluiceway to the bay. I was 11 and ran excitedly to tell my dad who came out to see for himself. Dad called Art Cooley and much excitement ensued! Our yard was very lively that week and while many photographs were taken, we would be hard pressed to locate
 one.”

The Kingbird 29: 57-58; Barbara J. Spencer

“The origin and status of an American Flamingo in good plumage, found in Bellport Nov. 11 and seen frequently in the Bellport-Brookhaven area for two weeks, is unknown. Three late fall occurrences in Canada (1969, 1973, 1977) have been thought to have been
 storm-related vagrants by some.”

It may be worth adding to these the report from October 1 of last year of a bird flying up the Hudson in northern Ulster county:
https://ebird.org/checklist/S151204238.
Many region 8 birders staked out various spots among the river, but did not relocate a flamingo.

In the excitement over the potential addition of American Flamingo to the New York State Checklist, people have been curious about prior records. As far as I am aware, there have been four prior occurrences of American Flamingo. All of these were doubted as
natural vagrants at the time, but no evidence of captive origin is cited in any of the cases (except for "faded plumage" in one case), and what is known of the dates and locations of their occurrences actually appear consistent with natural vagrancy. In particular,
the records from 1964 and 1965 occurred during a period of multiple occurrences in nearby Massachusetts and elsewhere.

[nysbirds-l] Patchogue and Bellport

2021-04-02 Thread leormand
A pair of eagles was recently seen on a nest in Patchogue village atop a
communications tower. Osprey had been harassing the eagles since their return
and today the osprey pair were tending to the nest. A similar series of events
happened last year atop a communications tower in Sayville. I would assume this
to be the same pair of eagles.

I spotted a pair of eagles (presumably the village pair) kiting above Robinsons
Pond in E Patchogue early this afternoon.

At the Bellport docks, a lone common loon was in the bay along with 5 red
breasted mergansers (1 male, 4 female).

[nysbirds-l] Mill road - Yaphank

2020-05-26 Thread leormand
I walked some town and county open space properties on either side of Mill Rd
in Yaphank today. The northern side Is a successional cedar forest and aside
from ticks didn’t seem to hold much activity other than chipping sparrows and a
surprise flyover by a glossy ibis. There was at least one indigo bunting but I
suspect many more given size of property and habitat.

The south side is typical pine oak forest and held the expected species
including a few great views of oven birds. I also stumbled upon a female turkey
and her young poults.

[nysbirds-l] Eastport Meadows, Eastport NY

2020-05-15 Thread leormand
Late this morning I made a stop along the southwest side of “Eastport Meadows”
a large Town of Brookhaven open space parcel south of Sunrise Highway, North of
Montauk Highway. The Eastport Athletic Complex is in the northeast corner for
reference.

In a section of open woods I found a black and white warbler and several
woodpeckers While bushwhacking through pine scrub forest I stumbled upon an
eastern towhee nest.

The open successional forest held an eastern meadowlark, more towhees and
singing prairie warblers.

I then walked a bit of the dirt road under the LIPA wires and had dozens of
cedar waxwings taking turns drinking from puddles, a screeching red-tailed
hawk, a hummingbird flitting around Oak trees, several blue winged warblers,
yellow warblers and American redstarts.

I’d imagine early morning under the right conditions would yield an even better
array of birds. Ironically, when I got home to my suburban yard my wife called
me over to look at a “red bird with black wings”. It’s the first scarlet
tanager I’ve ever seen after all my years looking.

Osprey. A pair of killdeer were on the western sand spit and there was a

[nysbirds-l] Banded herring gull - blue point NY

2020-01-14 Thread leormand
A photo of a banded ring-billed gull taken atop someone’s car at the Town’s
dock in Blue Point (just west of Corey Beach) was recently posted on a Facebook
group.

After entering the data on the USGS site, i received notification (remarkably
in just 12 hours) that the bird was banded in Varennes Quebec (just outside
Montreal) in 2014 and that the bird was hatched in 2011 or earlier.

[nysbirds-l] EPCAL and downtown Riverhead

2020-01-10 Thread leormand
I had a few minutes to drive through EPCAL and was disappointed to miss all
species of raptor. On my way out I had a half dozen or so bluebirds hanging in
the trees along the entrance way, just north of the lake.

Spending the afternoon in the Hyatt’s ballroom overlooking the river I watched
a pair of turkey vultures cruise back and fourth for a few hours. I also
observed a bald eagle On the south side of the river perched in a tree (this
sighting is 90% confident as the bird was at quite a distance with no
binoculars or camera).

[nysbirds-l] Where do ravens go - brookhaven

2019-04-19 Thread leormand
Yesterday (4-18-19) John Turner and I took a tour of the Brookhaven landfill
including a drive to the top. Much to our surprise we observed at least 6
ravens (they all appeared paired up).

Ravens were observed feeding and being chased by various gull species. I’m not
aware of any raven nests immediately adjacent to the landfill but know they
have been in Patchogue and Farmingville (town hall) and other surrounding areas
in recent years.

Dune road was quiet - no sign of owls or harriers. Shinnecock bay held some
oyster catchers, brant, long-tailed ducks, black scorers and common eiders and

[nysbirds-l] Swan river - great (frozen) South Bay

2018-01-10 Thread leormand
On my morning run I went down to pine neck dock at the mouth of swan river in
East Patchogue. The bay is still frozen over and the mouth of the river had one
small pocket of open water remaining. A number of mute swans were loafing on
the ice and a few dozen ducks were swimming in the opening (I believe they were
scaup). One duck stood out which I soon realized was a golden eye.
If you’re in the area may be worth a visit to take some nice photos as the
opening is close to the dock (which is free of ice and snow).

Interestingly there is quite a bit of open water on swan river south of Swezey
Avenue bridge

[nysbirds-l] dune road

2018-01-06 Thread leormand .
This afternoon I drove the length of Dune road and spent a little time at
the inlet. It was dead low tide at the inlet and there were a lot of ducks
feeding and getting out of the wind on the western side. Most appeared to
be red-breasted mergansers, but there were also surf scoters, black scoters
and the single numbers of various other winter waterfowl. No eiders
observed (though a few seals poppped up).

Dune Road yielded one extremely well hidden Snowy Owl as well as a number
of northern harriers include a grey ghost.

[nysbirds-l] Large mixed duck flock - Patchogue village

2017-12-17 Thread leormand
There was a large raft of ducks (mostly scaup and buffleheads) just east of
mascot dock in the village of Patchogue. The location is next to Lombardi’s on
the bay, just south of shore front dock. Birds often times feeding feet from
the boardwalk but also spooked easily. They were there at 10:30 AM and again at
4:00 PM

[nysbirds-l] cupsogue beach - westhampton

2017-11-25 Thread leormand .
A high noon walk down Cupsogue beach turned up a piping plover loosely
associating with a flock of Sanderlings. There was also a semi-palmated
plover with this group. Two loon flyovers between ocean and beach was the
only other thing of interest.

[nysbirds-l] Montauk - dead shearwaters

2017-06-22 Thread leormand
On a 1.5 mile walk between Essex Ave and Ditch Plains I observed at least 15
deceased shearwaters - almost all of which were entangled in seaweed.

Additionally, there was a long-tailed duck on the beach at Ditch Plains. A dog
chased it into the ocean where it swam for a bit before coming back to shore.
It allowed for extremely close approach though I did not see any clear
injuries. It's obviously healthy enough to run/walk and swim but seemed to
prefer the beach where it was preening itself.

Also observed were several colonies of bank swallows in the hoodoos.

[nysbirds-l] Eastport meadows

2017-05-17 Thread leormand
I visited Eastport Meadows around noon today. Despite it being mid-day, there
were many vocal and active birds including: prairie warbler, blue-winged
warblers, yellow warbler, catbirds and mockingbirds

This is a very large former farm field / red cedar forest on the south side of
Sunrise highway, north of montauk highway in Eastport. There's a large parking
lot at the Town ball fields for access. This property has many informal trails
from off road vehicles - also has plenty of ticks.

I Stopped at Swan River Preserve after work today around 5 - the Parks

great views of the pond even from the car. Without getting out I spotted a
few (continuing) teal and the continuing wilson's snipe. Easiest snipe
I've ever seen.

[nysbirds-l] Riverhead and EPCAL

2017-03-25 Thread leormand
A stop in riverhead at noon produced an Adult Bald Eagle over the County center
and an Osprey over the River.

I walked the southwestern portion of EPCAL and had a large flock of robins,
many eastern bluebirds, a half dozen kestrels, a few eastern meadowlarks, red
tailed Hawks and a variety of sparrow species. I did not notice any of the
previously reported rough legged Hawks.

[nysbirds-l] swan river preserve - east patchogue

2017-01-22 Thread leormand .
I spent some time at Swan River Preserve in East Patchogue this afternoon.
It was very quiet - however there were two (2) pairs of green-winged teal
duck and I was happily surprised to find and watch a Wilson's Snipe feeding
away on the south side.

Additionally, yesterday (1/21/17) I observed a merlin on Bay Avenue, near
the Great South Bay. I presume this is the neighborhood Merlin that has
hungout in this area the past few winters.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Calverton Grasslands - Developer wins bid...

2016-09-07 Thread leormand
It is my understanding that it goes in line with the recently approved
subdivision. The subdivision preserves nearly all existing grasslands though it
carves out some lots along the entrance/25A.

I seem to recall that the runways will be ripped up and planted with grasslands
- the hope is for a driving / walking trail but that would come at a much later
date.

What I don't know is how this all fits in with the "drone" manufacturer
"luminati" which of courses utilizes the eastern runway.

Anyone have more info?

[nysbirds-l] Swan river preserve - east Patchogue

2016-08-31 Thread leormand
Around 7 PM I walked around the swan River preserve in east Patchogue. Small
birds were absent aside from chirping cardinals and the always present song
birds.

A bit of pond watching turned up some mallards, the resident swan (still with a
fishing hook / line attached) and great blue heron. Somewhat unexpected was a
solitary sandpiper (though I've been seeing them there regularly) and a green
heron working the inside of the pond. Also spotted was a sizeable snapping
turtle beneath the bridge.

[nysbirds-l] Swan River Preserve - East Patchogue

2016-08-23 Thread leormand .
Around 5:30 PM I visited Swan River Preserve in East Patchogue and spent a
good amount of time sitting adjacent to the spillway that enters the river
on the south side. I observed the following birds there:

Baltime Oriole
Grey Catbird
Cardinal
Song Sparrow
Common Grackle
Black and White Warbler
Yellow Warbler
Female Common Yellowthroat Warbler

American Goldfinch were feeding on Thistle that is just going to seed
(should be increased numbers of birds over the next week) and a Spotted
Sandpiper was in the river on the east side of the property. There was a
flyover from Osprey, DC Cormorant and a variety of gulls and several
mallards were within the ponds.

[nysbirds-l] Swan River Preserve - East Patchogue

2016-08-15 Thread leormand .
Today at work I received a call from someone who, while raving about what a
great facility the Town's Swan Pond Preserve has become, complained of the
stagnant water, algal blooms and "lack of waterfowl to feed". I explained
to him how the pond system works, that it's been a very dry summer, and
that the pond now has frogs and fish in it (indicators it's a healthy
system). Despite my pleas he was still dissatisfied and convinced that the
ponds were in terrible shape, largely due to the lack of ducks.

On my way home I stopped by to see if there was something that needed
attention - but much to my delight, the ponds were in perfect order. Seen
were:

2 Spotted Sandpipers (I accidentally flushed one and when it landed in the
center island I noticed the second)
1 Eastern Kingbird hawking
1 American Goldfinch (there will likely be many more to come over the next
few weeks as there are many thistle plants blooming)
1 Great Egret feeding in the pond
1 Swan (This swan has some fishing line around it's neck - attempts to
capture have been unsuccessful)
1 Mallard
1 Osprey fly-over
numerous song-sparrows (the most common bird there, no matter what
day/season)
barn swallows, crows, cardinals and robins

Non-birds included a very close encounter with a munching muskrat before it
spooked and took off into the river, several monarch butterflies (a
wonderful sight to see), several black-swallowtail butterflies, multiple
species of damselfly/dragonfly as well as vocal green frogs (in addition to
the wide range of blooming plants/flowers.

The point is, the pond and surrounding system is absolutely thriving,
despite the lack of ducks. I think the person who called had the very best
intentions, but has forgotten what it's like to truly look for nature and
realize that just because animas don't come swimming up to you in search of
food, doesn't mean they're not around.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Any updates on EPCAL access?

Thank you. Glad we are having a group discussion so we can make sure
everyone is on the same page. It's detrimental to the cause if everyone has
different talking points.

I suggest, in writing the council persons, to also include a specific
memory from one of your visits. Seeing a new species for the first time,
watching fawns feeding, or even spending quality time with family members
and meeting new friends. Particularly so if you are a Riverhead resident
who has voting power.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Any updates on EPCAL access?

2016-08-09 Thread leormand
Michael,

Thanks for raising the issue again. I had hoped to make progress, but sadly
Sean Walters won re-election and continues his absurd (and silly) stance.

The good news is, from what I understand, Supervisor Walters and Councilwoman
Giglio are getting along well lately and Councilwoman Giglio can be an asset to
our "plight". I have spoken to her many times about EPCAL and bird watching,
she understands that people really enjoy it and she drives through there very
often.

The last communications I had were essentially "going in the runway is
trespassing, we have no official policy, it's the only way to prevent drag
racing etc etc".

Obviously, that is all BS. There are many ideas I raised that received no
response. They apparently issued a one day access to ELIAS for their CBC and
would "consider" granting special access on an extremely limited basis.

At this point, I think the best course of action is to get one (or several)
organizations to go in on a joint letter, electronically signed by everyone
from this list who is willing, and submit it to the Board at a public hearing.
We should ask for access, for clarification on the rules, for the reasons these
rules exist, etc.

I know Group for the East End is supportive of public access, as is ELIAS and I
bet many more organizations.

It's easy for the Supervisor to ignore a handful of people here and there. But
a concerted effort would be difficult to brush aside - especially if combined
with Newsday / News 12 articles and stories. They hate any bad press about
their beloved EPCAL.

On Saturday and Sunday I observed common terns and laughing gulls foraging over
Robinsons Pond on south country road in east Patchogue.

Interesting observations included adult terns feeding juveniles, laughing gulls
harassing terns and making them drop their catch, laughing gulls catching their
own fish and the variety of fish species being caught.

Additional birds included great egrets, snowy egrets, great blue heron and DC

[nysbirds-l] Ravens nest - Patchogue village

2016-05-09 Thread leormand
I have not actually confirmed this - but an 90% certain there is a Ravens nest
atop a cell tower structure in Patchogue village. The best spot to view the
nest is from the front of the Knights of Columbus building at the intersection
of Edwards St and Bailey Ave (south of Montauk highway).

I have seen Ravens several times at this location and this weekend I observed
one Raven on the tower and a second flying to the top where there appeared to
be a stick structure.

[nysbirds-l] East Patchogue and Bellport Village Birds

2016-05-01 Thread leormand .
On my morning run I noticed three (3) species of swallows hawking insects
over Robinsons pond (north side of S. Country Road) - Northern
Rough-winged, Tree and Barn. Additionally, there was a lone Glossy Ibis on
the east side of the pond mixed among several species of gulls including a
few breeding plumaged Laughing Gulls. A handful of Male Goldfinches were
observed as well.

While running down S. Howell's Lane in Bellport I watched an American Crow
snap sticks off a tree and then carry them to a nearby under-construction
nest in a large pine. Mother's Beach at the end of the road was quiet with
one osprey on a nest.

[nysbirds-l] Common Raven - farmingville

2016-04-01 Thread leormand
This afternoon I observed a common Raven being chased off by a goose at
Brookhaven Town Hall. The goose was defending its nest and I'm assuming the
Raven was trying to steal an egg. With quite a few geese nests around the
building and seeing a Raven for a second time in a month it will be interesting
to see if they are successful at predating any nests or chicks.

[nysbirds-l] raven - calverton

2016-03-18 Thread leormand .
After attending the LINH conference at BNL I headed to EPCAL to see if the
owls wanted to come out early. No sign of SEO's by 5:30 (and Riverhead PD
showed up to tell people they CAN'T walk on the concrete runway) but there
was a Raven being harassed by crows by Calverton Cemetery. Coincidentally,
there was a dead cedar waxwing on the side of the road.

Not much else to note at EPCAL aside from a red-tailed hawk, some kestrels
and TVs

[nysbirds-l] swan river preserve - east patchogue

2015-06-11 Thread leormand .
An evening visit to the Swan River Preserve in East Patchogue (just south
of Swan Lake, Montauk Highway) yielded a continuing Glossy Ibis, a noisy
flock of Cedar Waxwings (largely feeding in the center island and hanging
on adjacent trees), an osprey being harassed by red-winged black birds, a
killdeer (center island) and a family of swans and several families of
geese.

If someone has never seen a glossy ibis before (up close) or wants good
photos - this is a great spot to go. The bird is a bit skittish, but pick
a spot and wait for it to come by - the pond is so small it won't take
long. I don't know if it's there during mid-day (a stop by today at 12:30
did not yield the bird) but I've heard it's there in the morning (possibly
with others) and has been there the last few evenings.

[nysbirds-l] Glossy Ibis - east Patchogue

2015-06-09 Thread leormand
On my morning run along Roe avenue I saw a glossy ibis flying. This evening
while biking around Swan River Preserve (just south of Swan Lake - about 1.5
miles north of where I saw the glossy this morning) I observed a glossy ibis
feeding in the ponds. There were also several geese family and a large swan
family - unfortunate side effects of creating this new habitat.

[nysbirds-l] common raven - east patchogue

2015-05-27 Thread leormand .
While on my morning run, just west of the Swan River (and south of Montauk
Highway) I observed several crows and an Osprey above some trees - I then
heard the unmistakeable call of a Common Raven. The Osprey seemed to
disappear while the crows mobbed the crown of a tree. I never saw the
raven - making me wonder if that was what the crows were mobbing?

[nysbirds-l] swan river preserve

2015-04-22 Thread leormand .
The other day there were two (2) blue-winged teal on the pond. This
morning, during a cleanup, I observed two (2) killdeer feeding on the
mudflats.

On a non-bird note, there are some rainbow trout in the river adjacent to
the ponds.

[nysbirds-l] south shore bald eagles - lots of osprey

2015-04-19 Thread leormand .
Yesterday my wife and I visited the Eagle nest and observed the "adult" on
the nest with the sub-adult in a nearby tree. After awhile it took off and
went hunting and was harassed periodically by other osprey that have
established territory. We also observed a pair of osprey breeding and saw
some sky-dancing with the male offering a fresh river herring.

I would expect the eagles to be hatching very shortly... though I'm leaving
for vacation in a week so I won't be able to get in much observation for
awhile.

Does anyone know what happens if they aren't successful? Do they stay in
the same area near the nest or do they go wander? Thanks

[nysbirds-l] Letter to Riverhead Town Board RE- EPCAL

2015-04-16 Thread leormand .
All:

I have drafted and sent a letter to the Riverhead Town Board regarding
runway access to EPCAL and have included some of my favorite images. The
letter and images can be seen by viewing the link below. I encourage all
of you who have visited EPCAL over the years to contact the Board. If our
voices are strong, we cannot be ignored. Intimidating people who are
birding on public land with the threat of JAIL is absurd and preposterous.
Thank you.

http://birdsoflongisland.blogspot.com/2015/04/epcal-letter-to-riverhead-town-board.html

On a note related to actual birds, I saw a Merlin devouring a small bird
this morning while on my morning run in East Patchogue.

[nysbirds-l] Eagle and some Warblers - Snowy Owl report

2015-04-15 Thread leormand .
According to a post on facebook the Snowy Owl is still present along Dune
Road.

The Bald Eagle nest I've been frequenting was business as usual
sub-adult on the nest, adult about 1/4 mile out on the marsh. After a
while the bird took off and circled high above the bay. An Osprey also
passed by with a flounder.

Robert Cushman Park (near the BNL boundary, Manorville) had a lot of very
active Pine Warblers.

[nysbirds-l] EPCAL Kestrels - no snowy owl

2015-04-12 Thread leormand .
My wife and I looked (without much effort) along dune road for the Snowy
Owl and did not find it.

EPCAL (calverton grasslands) had a minimum of 30 Kestrel on the western
runway - with probably an equal amount on the easter (potentially a bit
less due to the operation of the skydive outfit today). The birds were
literally everywhere and there was a lot of movement. Plenty of red-tailed
hawks as well, only a few eastern meadowlarks.

2 Osprey at Woodhull dam in Riverside including one right above my head
patiently waiting for a fish to show up so it could pounce with as little
effort as possible.

Yesterday I visited one of the Long Island South Shore Bald Eagle nests.
The "adult" was way out on the marsh and sat there, refusing to move
despite osprey, crows and a few passing boats. There were at least 6
osprey in the vicinity, all posturing for territory and the nest across the
creek from the Eagle featured 2 birds with some courtship display including
"sky-dancing" and delivering a freshly caught fish.
