comparison of the size of all three species!!
(Neither crow vocalized but one was so much larger than the other that I’m
assuming American & Fish; the raven was croaking).

Can’t believe I forgot to add this to my earlier post of Blue Grosbeak this
afternoon.
Pretty sure there was a singing Prothonotary Warbler in the same general area,
couldn’t get my glasses on it from the car, it sounded fairly high up.

An early male Prairie Warbler at the Sands Point Preserve (Nassau) this morning
was unexpected; it was near the “waterfall” that feeds the pond. Many Palm (23)
and Yellow-rumped (26) Warblers.
Other migrants included Turkey Vulture (overhead), 3 Wood Duck, 4 Ruby-crowned
Kinglets, Blue-gray Gnat
This afternoon, I was looking out the window at my mother’s home on Manhasset
Bay around 3PM and I spotted an adult Northern Gannet. I went down on the dock
with binoculars and was treated to very close views of 2 adult birds
plunge-diving together into the relatively shallow bay waters. (It was
No Sandhill Crane between 12:45 and 1:30 today at Suffolk Farms; but at least
15 Savannah Sparrows in the hedgerow separating the two larger fields. Also an
American Kestrel.

Strange location for an active Osprey nest. It’s located in some kind of empty
paved construction lot next to a small VFW building on the west end of Victory
Ave in Brookhaven (Suffolk), just east of Horseblock Road.

morning, I watched 3 American Kestrels hunting for 45 minutes over the field NE
of the main parking lot.

Seeing these reports of Purple Gallinule prompted me to search eBird to see if
the one I saw MANY years ago was there. It wasn’t, so I added it.
This was a bird that Barbara Spencer (who else?) found on her way to work the
morning of June 13, 1980 at Scudders Pond in Sea Cliff (Nassau County). I
This morning, on my way in to the Sands Point Preserve, I stopped at Bar Beach
(Port Washington, Nassau County). All of Hempstead Harbor was completely
frozen. A Bald Eagle was sitting on the ice in the middle of the harbor,
devouring what appeared to be a duck or gull.

Never sure how vague to be with owls; this afternoon at 2:30, I found a Snowy
Owl at Heckscher SP (Suffolk), sitting on top of one of those wooden poles with
all the sticks on top of it.
It left the location at 2:45.
Also, 2 Northern Harriers and 30 Snow Buntings were in the park.

The Northern Nassau Christmas Count was held Saturday, December 16. The results
were a disappointing 94 species and equally disappointing 19,855 individuals.
There were highlights, however, including a count first 2 Tree Swallows, 3
Cackling Geese, 7 Bald Eagles, Virginia Rail, 20 Greater Yellow

soccer practice this morning at the Northport Soccer Park. It was being mobbed
continuously by a half dozen crows.

berserk. I assumed that a hawk had made a run and as I crept around the corner

I went to Heckscher SP (Suffolk) from 11:30 AM to about 1PM today. It rained
steadily but it was 64 degrees. There was a nice variety of shorebirds
providing very close views.
The highlights were 3 American Golden Plovers and a very nondescript
Long-billed Dowitcher that I initially could not pi

big influx of fall sparrows to speak of.
There were many Ruby-crowned Kinglets (25+), Eastern Phoebes (20+), and

from 11AM-2PM. I periodically scanned the ocean, binoculars only, during that

I found the Barrow’s Goldeneye this morning off Prospect Point (Sands Point)
around 11AM comfortably associating with a loose flock of Common Goldeneye. I
was able to pick it out fairly easily with binoculars but a scope would have
yielded much better views.

The Northern Nassau Christmas Count, held yesterday, Saturday the 17th, failed
to reach the 100 species mark for only the 11th time since 1970.
