[nysbirds-l] Ruff, Shorebird Locations - Niagara County

2022-05-03 Thread Willie D'Anna
The spectacular breeding plumaged RUFF, found by Joel Strong on Saturday,
continues today. The location is on Townline Rd, between Hosmer and Hartland
Rds, in the Town of Somerset. There are lots of other shorebirds here as
well. Mostly yellowlegs (things have just switched with Lesser now more
numerous than Greater) and some Solitary Sandpipers and Dunlin. Today, I had
a Pectoral Sandpiper and a Spotted Sandpiper.

There are a few other places in the county to look for shorebird
enthusiasts:

-North side of Drake Settlement Rd, between Fuller and Hess Rds,
Town of Newfane. Today, there were both yellowlegs, Solitarys, and Dunlin.

-West side of Quaker Rd (State Route 148), between Rt 104 and
Chapman Rd. Today, there were both yellowlegs, Solitarys, Green-winged and
Blue-winged Teal, Pintail, and Mallard.

-East side of Niagara-Orleans Countyline Rd (S.R. 269), ¼ mile south
of Yates Center Rd, Town of Yates, Orleans Co. Today, this spot held the
most individuals, with 94 Lesser Yellowlegs and 9 Greaters. There were also
Solitarys, Dunlin, and Spotted. A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE (another of
Joel’s finds) continues with the Canada Geese here.

Shorebird locations are worth checking often, with changeover evident almost
every day.

Good birding!

Willie

Hi Larry,
I think your sentiment of deescalating tensions is great, but comparing feuds
between birders and photographers with police brutality of black Americans is
off base. I'll stop there to not distract from the point of the listserv.
Anyone can email me personally to talk more.

Photographers definitely can be incredibly inconsiderate and chase away rare
(or not rare) birds (and then deny it).  Indeed, I remember the Gyrfalcon (like
Ruff a bird
I have never seen) spooked by a photographer at Blue Chip Farms who
sacrilegiously uses the moniker “LarryBird.”  However, I am not sure calling
the police is really the way to go.   So whether it’s birders v. photographers
(redux), or anything of far more
import in this world, not likely to change anytime soon.  In the words of

Why is the solution always to punish the good birders who only want to enjoy
looking at these rare birds?

Why not punishing the misbehaving birders/photographers?

If you see someone breaking the law by harassing a migratory bird or stepping
on restricted area to get closer to it, call the police and photograph them
being arrested. Then
post their photo on social media and let it be a lesson to all the misbehaving
birders.

This collective punishment doesn’t help any bird or birder.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Ruff at Heckscher Park - NO (Suffolk Co.)

2018-05-24 Thread Larry Trachtenberg

Photographers definitely can be incredibly inconsiderate and chase away rare
(or not rare) birds (and then deny it). Indeed, I remember the Gyrfalcon (like
Ruff a bird I have never seen) spooked by a photographer at Blue Chip Farms who
sacrilegiously uses the moniker “LarryBird.” However, I am not sure calling
the police is really the way to go. So whether it’s birders v. photographers
(redux), or anything of far more import in this world, not likely to change
anytime soon. In the words of Rodney King, c. 1992 -- who suffered a far
greater indignity than missing a ruff or a gyrfalcon:

“People, I just want to say, you know, can we all get along? Can we get along?
… I mean, we’re all stuck here for a while. Let’s try to work it out . . .”
(Yeah, sure.)

Go Celts.

While, that is a viable punishment, safety of the bird is paramount and birders
will have to be birders and do their own due diligence. In other words, find
your own dam birds instead of chasing a list.
Just my opinion, YMMV.

Why is the solution always to punish the good birders who only want to enjoy

Why not punishing the misbehaving birders/photographers?
If you see someone breaking the law by harassing a migratory bird or stepping
on restricted area to get closer to it, call the police and photograph them
being arrested. Then post their photo on social media and let it be a lesson to
all the misbehaving birders.
This collective punishment doesn’t help any bird or birder.

2018-05-24 Thread Gus Keri

Why is the solution always to punish the good birders who only want
to enjoy looking at these rare birds? Why not punishing the misbehaving
birders/photographers?If you see someone breaking the law by harassing a
migratory bird or stepping on restricted area to get closer to it, call the
police and photograph them being arrested. Then post their photo on social
media and let it be a lesson to all the misbehaving birders. This collective
punishment doesn’t help any bird or birder.GusSent using Zoho Mail On Thu,

[nysbirds-l] Ruff at Heckscher SP Suffolk

2018-05-23 Thread Steve Walter
For those who might be interested, I've posted a picture of the Ruff at my
web site http://stevewalternature.com/ . Pictures taken from my old ride.
And from what I saw, that's the way to do it. Trying to walk toward it is
not advisable. And staking it out at the field 7 pools seems like the best
approach to seeing it.

Too bad. As I noted before, that Ruff is extremely jumpy and once you see that

[nysbirds-l] Ruff - looks like the same bird

2016-06-30 Thread Andrew Baksh
I have posted two videos (poor quality ones at that) on my blog (
http://birdingdude.blogspot.com/2016/06/jamaica-bay-wildlife-refuge-tale-of-two.html)
showing what I am convinced is the same Ruff from the 25th and then
re-found this AM by Robert Proniewych. I am fascinated because this is
exactly a repeat of 2012 by what I am presuming is the same bird. I have
mused about "reverse migration" or another site nearby that is hosting
these birds when they disappear for a few days.

Other shorebirds on the East Pond this morning included, Greater
Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs, Spotted Sandpiper, Killdeer, Eastern Willet,
Least Sandpiper and American Oystercatcher.

For those interested, last night I published an updated map of the East
Pond which you could also access on my blog.

Cheers,

[nysbirds-l] Ruff - East Pond Intel and suggestion on working this bird...

2016-06-26 Thread Andrew Baksh
For anyone thinking of checking the North End. Yesterday, I cleared the north
west trail so it is open. Please note, that knee high boots is a MUST, if
attempting to enter the pond at that end.

The water is still draining and is higher there than on the south with many
soft spots. Please be VERY careful if you venture there.

Yesterday, while a few of us observed the bird when it was first found on the
south end. It was noticeably jumpy and kept its distance. I would suggest
giving this bird ample room, as it may leave the pond if pushed. It did leave
the pond in the afternoon although this was more as a result of the tide having
turned so that is also the other variable to consider.

Here's to an awesome shorebirding season!

[nysbirds-l] Ruff @ JBWR 3:00

2016-06-25 Thread Tim Healy
The Ruff was still visible from the Big John's overlook, well south of the
Raunt on the east side 10 mins ago. It was moving south at a very fast pace
initially, but it has slowed to forage on a mudflat just before the cove bends
out of view. I imagine the south end would supply good views as well, but one
should take care not to step out and disturb the bird from the southern
shoreline. In the process of sending this email, the bird took off and looked
to be headed north, somewhat towards the bay. Not currently in view.

Really handsome individual! Rufous with a somewhat darker neck ruff. Thanks to
all who update on the whereabouts and comings and goings of the bird.

Cheers!

Re: [nysbirds-l] Ruff - Timber Point East Marina (Suffolk)

2016-04-26 Thread Tim Healy
To any curious birders who just got off work: the Ruff apparently took off and
flew west around 2:30, high and far. A bit disappointing, but you never know
what tomorrow will bring. Tonight's winds don't look favorable for landbird
migration, so I will probably check Timber Point tomorrow morning to see if the
bird returns. I'd advise birders in the area to keep an eye out.

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Ruff at Lincoln Park

2015-05-16 Thread Glenn Wilson
I'm from Binghamton NY but happened to be near the Ruff sighting in Hempsted so
I just tried for it. I dipped. Curious where in the park the Riff was. Thanks
all.

[nysbirds-l] Ruff/Reeve: No (still), Kings County

2014-05-30 Thread Sean Sime
Rob Jett and I were handed the baton from Shane Blodgett and stayed at
Plumb Beach till 2pm along with Bobbi Manion, the original finder. No luck
with the target species, but a flyover Red-throated loon in serious molt
proved exciting!
For those wondering, no marsh sparrows were seen or heard during our time
there and none were reported by birders there since first light.

Also, earlier at Marine Park a late Cliff Swallow was seen flying south and
away along the channel.

Good birding,

Sean Sime

[nysbirds-l] Ruff/Reeve No as of 12:30.

2014-05-30 Thread Sean Sime
Plumb beach, brooklyn.

Birders have been present since first light and the bird in question has not
been seen. Shorebird numbers are down substantially.
Rob Jett and I checked Marine park at high tide. No luck.

[nysbirds-l] Ruff/Reeve Plum Beach Brooklyn NO

2014-05-30 Thread Shane Blodgett
No sign of yesterday's Ruff on the incoming tide. Very few shorebirds period.
High tide is 9:47 a.m.
Was initially found roosting on slack/falling tide yesterday about 1.5 hours
after high so worth checking again though last night's SW winds could have
moved some birds out.
Congratulations to Roberta Manian on an awesome Kings County find!
