applying patches-after-patches ... We've lost count of the number of TARs

From my experience there is no way that you can use a parameter to connect
as SYSDBA. I was reading that you are to connect as INTERNAL if you want to
connect as SYSDBA. But we all know that is a bad idea and impossible in 9i
anyway.

If you export using the 7.3.3 database using the 7.3.3 export utility you
should be able to import it into your 8.1.7 database using the 8.1.7 import
utility. It's backward compatible.
You just can't go the other way (import an 8.1.7 export to 7.3.3).

Is this surprising? I still remember an Oracle presentation when 8i was
first coming out and the Oracle rep answered a question about hints by
saying that no one should use hints any more because the optimizer always
used the best path.

If on version 8.1.7.0, you should upgrade to 8.1.7.2 before creating any
databases. 8.1.7.3 is available, but rife
database
hangs. You should install statspack, or if that's not done, run
utlbstat/utlestat every hour or so and analyze the statistics. I think that
database must be waiting on resources before it completely hangs. Look for
wait events, system statistics and latch statistics.
