COVID and NY pass your filter? SMH.

Hi everyone,
Gabrielle Green / Being Better has unsubscribed themself from the list. So
there's no point in trying to argue with them. Let's return to the productive
conversation that we'd been having.

Hi folks
Two of my pet peeves are on this thread:
1. I do not know who the email writer "Being Better" is , and also where
that person lives. For the purposes of most of these dialogues, this is
useful information
2. I am setting up a new organization: *BTBA* *(Ban Those
Blasted Acronyms)*

I agree.
What is the 'right' Covid policy is not known.
What Covid policy is comfortable
Hi everyone,
Please keep this about your dance's covid policy. This is not a place to
debate the effectiveness of masks, vaccines, etc.

In my group our old group had been shut down since 2020 partially because
the leadership couldn't agree about covid mitigation policies. In spring of
2022 myself and one of the other people in the group decided to reopen it
without any covid policy, just allowing people to do what they felt was
IIRC, in one of the COVID rescue bills passed, there was a specific
exemption for organizations protecting them from suits for people being
infected as part of operation.
That said, in the US, pretty much anybody can pursue a suit against anyone

Have there been dance groups sued because someone caught Covid at a dance?
Is that what a waiver prevents? How did they prove they caught it at the
dance?

The ten sets of dance organizers running regular series at the Guiding Star

dances. You can see it here:

It includes mandatory masks, proof of vaccination, signing a
Actually, I read Donald Perley's comment apolitically, not as a statement
that policies should recognize COVID's severe threat to humanity and thus
be severe themselves (that's politics), but rather that the severity of
COVID in your community at any given moment varies, and so should your

I agree that how important it is to avoid getting or spreading covid should
be a major driver of dance policies. But I don't think this list is a good
place for discussion evaluating that importance: there's no "dance
organizer" perspective on that, so there's not much reason to have the
Seconding Donald's comments.
If this were about say, dealing with harassers, or an alcohol policy, or
any other safety issue, my assumption is that we wouldn't be looking to
avoid discussion if there was a major difference on the perception of harm
or danger.
This is one of the few places online
How serious COVID is should be the driving force behind any COVID policy.

Oops, to clarify: I meant HTDS has been dancing since June 2021 (not 2020). :)

Discussion of covid policies and implementation are a good fit for this
list.
Discussion of how organizations have navigated conflicting needs and
preferences around covid in their communities is also good fit for this
list.
General "how seriously should you take covid at this point" discussion
Re COVID in general in the US, we are still seeing around 500 deaths per day.

Increasingly Covid-19 is like car accidents, cancer, and the flu. It's an
important risk that should be managed. We want to do the things that make
sense, bypass the rituals that don't, and choose how far on the spectrum we
want to go of risk-aversion versus having some fun.
As community leaders,
It varies tremendously depending on the locale. Here in Kentucky there a couple
of large dances where the policy is basically “be responsible” but our local
dance in Louisville is carding. It required masks until recently.
Like everything else in this country there is a great deal of
The US is very divided on how much covid is still seen to be a problem, and
in many dance communities this has been pretty acrimonious.

Hi all,
Is COVID still that much of a problem in the USA?
Our current policy is:
"Vaccinations and LFTs are appreciated, but not required. Please stay at home
if you have symptoms of COVID-19 or you feel unwell in any other way."
We still provide sanitisers and remind
Hi all
Thanks Lisa, for sharing this. I haven't read the whole document, but it's
interesting to see, especially some of the non-restrictive groups, since I'd
say the groups I dance with are more on the highly restrictive end.

This is terrific! Thanks Lisa!
We'll make good use of this data, since the Flying Board will be updating our
public health policy in a couple of weeks as we prepare to move our first
Friday dance series indoors for our November dance.
