[Origami] Origami sighting: Five-intersecting tetrahedra

2024-03-07 Thread A V Fernandez via Origami
Adam Savage (of MythBusters fame) and Matt Parker (Standup Mathematician/
numberphile) collaborated in their attempt to show how to build a polyhedra
model, based on an origami model (Tom Hull’s five intersecting tetrahedra) that
someone named Polly apparently folded for Matt. They discuss the maths,
symmetry, logic, and ultimate frustrations of building the model in one day.
The long YouTube video is well worth one’s time to watch, IMHO. But then again,
I enjoyed vicariously geeking out with them as they plan, with excitement, to
build their colorful non-paper model.

Hi all!

I’ve been binge watching LA Law on Hulu- season 6, episode 14 “Diet, Diet,
My Darling”:
At the beginning of the episode there is a tense pretrial meeting about the
publication of a cookbook. One of the women involved in the case is folding
a crane. The senior partner asks what she’s doing. She says “origami. It
helps me relax.”
Same, girl. Same.

Please be aware that one of the other storylines in this episode is
upsetting. The crane is in the first few minutes and there are no other
references to origami after that.

I have nothing further and the defense rests,

[Origami] Origami Sighting

2023-10-06 Thread Kevin Lee
Hello Folders,

As I'm others will have noticed, on 6th October, the British Origami Society
Magazine was the Guest Publication in the 'Missing Words' round of the
venerable UK BBC satirical program, 'Have I Got News For You' - this in
primetime on a Friday night, on BBC1.

Long running team captain, Ian Hislop (also editor of 'Private Eye' magazine)
rather disappointingly made the joke about "it's going to fold", to half
groans, half weak applause from the live audience.

2023-06-21 Thread mado...@gatheringfolds.com
I can see that being used for practice grids and prototypes, but since I completely customize (rotation, number of spacings) my grid to the pattern I plan to fold on it and I fold a different pattern every time and those patterns don't generally require precreasing after the grid is folded it's not something I'd use for my tessellations.Paradoxically, I feel like having readily available precreased grids would discourage new tessellation folders from pursuing projects that are bigger than the machined grid or learning odd divisions and rotated grids, which have proved crucial to how I plan my projects (but that might just be me being old-fashioned).I also use gridding as an excuse to watch YouTube videos, so I don't mind doing it myself and I've chosen to design patterns that (mostly) don't require precreasing after the grid is done.I agree that the device would be invaluable in mass-producing a particular pattern, especially when all the fold lines go all the way across the paper!Happy folding,Madonna YoderGathering Folds

Hello

Yesterday at a book store I saw Nicholas Taleb's book "Skin in the game" in
its Spanish version. The cover is different from the English version and
has an origami shark and an angel fish. I don't recognize the shark but the
angel fish looks similar to Peter Engel's.

You can check the cover at

If the link doesn't work, search for "jugarse la piel nicholas taleb"

Does anyone know who is the shark author and confirm authority about the

The show, Cuentos de Cuentos/Accounts of Accounting, included a section called

2020-08-21 Thread Anna
Hi,

I just stumbled upon this fabric pleating service today, where you can
order tessellated and corrugated fabrics. Here is their online portfolio:
https://www.cimentpleating.com/fancy-pleating
Don't know whether they also make custom designs, to get your favourite
Origami tesselation/corrugation patterns pleated into fabric, but I thought
this might be interesting to some of you.

Nice Greetings from Vienna, Austria

Nintendo has just released the trailer for the newest game in the Paper Mario
series: Paper Mario: The Origami King.
The Paper Mario games are action RPGs, stylized so that everything in the game
is 2D and appears to be made of and drawn on paper.  In the newest iteration,
it appears the Origami King is taking over by folding all of the 2d characters
in to 3D origami figures.  The trailer also displays other types of papercraft
as well, as some things appear to be paper maiche, and there may be other forms
I missed.

[Origami] Sighting -- Origami Cranes on Eureka

2020-03-19 Thread OrigamiX
This may be old news to everyone here, but since I'm a decade behind on
television watching, who knows?

Eureka, Episode 16, season 4, 12.5 minutes into the show.

The characters are locked in a room where they are being tested in
preparation for a trip to Titan (suspend disbelief here). Their
challenge is to fold 100 origami cranes. One of the characters explains
that this is the same test that NASA uses. The idea is to see if people
become sloppier as they progress. Anyone know if there actually is a
NASA origami challenge? Some of the "science" on Eureka has a basis in
fact.

Two Women Fell Sick From the Coronavirus. One Survived.
By Sui-Lee Wee and Vivian WangMarch 13, 2020
The young mothers didn’t tell their children they had the coronavirus. Mama was
working hard, they said, to save sick people.

Instead, Deng Danjing and Xia Sisi were fighting for their lives in the same
hospitals where they worked, weak from fever and gasping for breath. Within a
matter of weeks, they had gone from healthy medical professionals on the front
lines of the epidemic in Wuhan, China, to coronavirus patients in critical
condition.

The world is still struggling to fully understand the new virus, its symptoms,
spread and sources. For some, it can feel like a common cold. For others, it is
a deadly infection that ravages the lungs and pushes the immune system into
overdrive, destroying even healthy cells. The difference between life and death
can depend on the patient’s health, age and access to care — although not
always.

The virus has infected more than 132,000 globally. The vast majority of cases
have been mild, with limited symptoms. But the virus’s progression can be
quick, at which point the chances of survival plummet. Around 68,000 people
have recovered, while nearly 5,000 have died.

The fates of Ms. Deng and Dr. Xia reflect the unpredictable nature of a virus
that affects everyone differently, at times defying statistical averages and
scientific research.

As the new year opened in China, the women were leading remarkably similar
lives. Both were 29 years old. Both were married, each with a young child on
whom she doted.

Ms. Deng, a nurse, had worked for three years at Wuhan No. 7 Hospital, in the
city where she grew up and where the coronavirus pandemic began. Her mother was
a nurse there, too, and in their free time they watched movies or shopped
together. Ms. Deng’s favorite activity was playing with her two pet kittens,
Fat Tiger and Little White, the second of which she had rescued just three
months before falling sick.

Before the epidemic, Ms. Deng had promised to take her 5-year-old daughter to
the aquarium.
Dr. Xia, a gastroenterologist, also came from a family of medical
professionals. As a young child, she had accompanied her mother, a nurse, to
work. She joined the Union Jiangbei Hospital of Wuhan in 2015 and was the
youngest doctor in her department. Her colleagues called her “Little Sisi” or
“Little Sweetie” because she always had a smile for them. She loved Sichuan hot
pot, a dish famous for its numbingly spicy broth.

Dr. Xia loved traveling with her family. She had recently visited Wuzhizhou
Island, a resort destination off the southern coast of China.
When a mysterious new virus struck the city, the women began working long
hours, treating a seemingly endless flood of patients. They took precautions to
protect themselves. But they succumbed to the infection, the highly contagious
virus burrowing deep into their lungs, causing fever and pneumonia. In the
hospital, each took a turn for the worse.

One recovered. One did not.

Symptoms

Onset of virus & hospitalization

The symptoms came on suddenly.

Dr. Xia had ended her night shift on Jan. 14 when she was called back to attend
to a patient — a 76-year-old man with suspected coronavirus. She dropped in
frequently to check in on him.

Five days later, she started feeling unwell. Exhausted, she took a two-hour nap
at home, then checked her temperature: It was 102 degrees. Her chest felt tight.

A few weeks later, in early February, Ms. Deng, the nurse, was preparing to eat
dinner at the hospital office, when the sight of food left her nauseated. She
brushed the feeling aside, figuring she was worn out by work. She had spent the
beginning of the outbreak visiting the families of confirmed patients and
teaching them to disinfect their homes.

After forcing down some food, Ms. Deng went home to shower, and then, feeling
groggy, took a nap. When she woke up, her temperature was 100 degrees.

Fever is the most common symptom of the coronavirus, seen in nearly 90 percent
of patients. About a fifth of people experience shortness of breath, often
including a cough and congestion. Many also feel fatigued.

Both women rushed to see doctors. Chest scans showed damage to their lungs, a
tell-tale sign of the coronavirus that is present in at least 85 percent of
patients, according to one study.

In particular, Ms. Deng’s CT scan showed what the doctor called ground-glass
opacities on her lower right lung — hazy spots that indicated fluid or
inflammation around her airways.

The hospital had no space, so

In an article about the artist Haegue Yang in the NY Times Sunday Style

"One of Yang’s first big comeback pieces, and the one that launched her
career, was 2006’s “Sadong 30,” which took place in Incheon, a port city in
South Korea, inside her late grandmother’s old house, abandoned for nearly
a decade. It was a ruin, with missing windows, peeling wallpaper and holes
in the ceiling. Yang placed broken and intact mirrors, a folding laundry

within the derelict rooms."

For me the whole point of origami is the fun, challenge and satisfaction of
folding, NOT the results. When I give someone an origami model I made for
them, it is partly the charm of the model they love, but it is just as much
the fact that I folded it myself, just for them.
Cannot replace that with any machine, no matter the beautiful or precise
results!!

Totally!

It’s been an open question in generative, computational art for some time now.
Can a system make creative decisions? The current consensus (for sake of
simplicity of the argument) is that a good system can be a good design
“collaborator” but in the end humans are making the judgement. Although
evolutionary models are capable of making decisions based on criteria, humans
are still defining and coding the criteria.

Having done some work in fold automation and fabrication it’s an interesting
idea, but still kind of far-fetched that a machine could even come close to
human dexterity for origami. Sure, Devin Balkcom and some other teams have made
origami making robots, but they are *very* limited.

The real frontier is scale, below what a human could ever fold. The
self-folding Micro scale stuff is cutting edge, though mostly “kirigami” in
style.

We’ve got many years of reigning large over paper. We are “digital” origamists
after all. Pun intended :D

Best, Matthew

Ah – but even if a machine can fold, can it doing the shaping that makes a
design look alive? :-)

As I recall talking to Joseph Wu, following a diagram to fold origami is like
painting by number. Doing origami however, is about putting a bit of yourself
into the work. And I don’t think a machine can do that.

1) While on a pilgrimage to study Church Architecture, our tour group
stayed in a Hilton Hotel in

London, Ontario CN. The morning breakfast buffet included muffins wraped in

Brown (? Wax) paper origami! I'll try to send a photo soon. I'd really like
to find a

Source for that paper?

2) For an upcoming project, OCoP (Origami Club of Pittsburgh) wants to
fold a number of

Kusudama balls .several using Sonobe units (and variations). When I
Iearned the model

At a NYC Convention.we did three versions:

1) Sonobe basic unit

2) Sonobe basic (turned into a "White Ribbon") (pre-folded by rolling
the edge of the

Cupboard fold into a "white" hem (1/4" or less) .then I can't remember the
next

Steps to finish the unit (to avoid a "gap" in the middle). Does anyone
remember the

Next couple of steps?

3) Sonobe basic (turned into a "Bow tie" Block).

Thank you for your help.in advance!

We are celebrating our 31st Anniversary this year. We still meet at the Sq.

[Origami] Origami sighting

2019-05-27 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
I heard in the radio about the Spanish translation of a book ("El Señor
Origami") that was originally in French ("Monsieur Origami"), which is by
Jean-Marc Ceci. Here's the URL to the publisher's webpage of the translated
version: https://www.planetadelibros.com/libro-el-senor-origami/290030

The main character follows a woman from Japan to Italy where he becomes a
washi artisan. Looks like that's just the start of the whole plot. I wonder
how much origami is mentioned in the book.

Has anyone read Shadows by YA/fantasy writer Robin McKinley?

Origami has a prominent role in the book, first as a means for two teens to
find friendship with each other, but also because it has a magic of its own—how
it can turn paper into something else.

There are also these nice ornaments of origami models at every chapter opener.
See the example below.

Enjoy!

[Origami] NYTimes: Origami Sighting

2018-12-18 Thread Jacob Metzger

Not quite origami, but thought many list members would find this article in
the New York Times, about Donald Knuth, famous computer scientist and
author of the seminal computer science book The Art of Computer
Programming ,
interesting.
The article mentions Martin and Erik Demaine and their mathematical origami
designs for how to fold paper and linkages
 into
different shapes.

NYTimes article here:

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/17/science/donald-knuth-computers-algorithms-programming.html

or here:

https://nyti.ms/2GjaIjp

Excerpt from article:

One section of his book is titled, “Puzzles Versus the Real World.” He
emailed an excerpt to the father-son team of Martin Demaine, an artist, and
Erik Demaine, a computer scientist, both at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, because Dr. Knuth had included their “algorithmic puzzle fonts
.”

“I was thrilled,” said Erik Demaine. “It’s an honor to be in the book.” He
mentioned another Knuth quotation, which serves as the inspirational motto
for the biannual “FUN with Algorithms ”
conference: “Pleasure has probably been the main goal all along.”

But then, Dr. Demaine said, the field went and got practical. Engineers and
scientists and artists are teaming up to solve real-world problems —
protein folding, robotics, airbags — using the Demaines’s mathematical
origami designs for how to fold paper and linkages
 into different shapes.

"The Origami Robot

This tiny, biodegradable robot unfolds itself from a frozen capsule and
then scoots around in the stomach, controlled by magnets outside the body.
So far it has removed foreign objects and repaired wounds in an artificial

The Accordion Pill

Made of pleated, biodegradable, medical-grade film encased in a capsule,
the Accordion Pill unfurls when the capsule dissolves in stomach fluid. The
pleated film releases the medication, tucked into its folds, for up to 12

Parkinson’s disease treatment carbidopa/levodopa, that are best absorbed in
a slow, steady manner in the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract.

[Origami] Origami sighting: red, white, and blue crane on book jacket

2018-05-12 Thread Karen Reeds
While I was browsing Rowman & Littlefield's website, the crane on the cover
of this new book caught my eye:

Peace Works: America's Unifying Role in a Turbulent World, by Frederick D.
Barton (Rowman & Littlefield, 2018)
https://rowman.com/ISBN/9781538113011

I asked who deserved the credit for the striking design and got this
response from Sally Rinehart, the publisher's Senior Designer:

"Hi Karen! Thanks for reaching out. I made the origami crane for the cover,
though I have to admit the final image is a bit retouched due to my lack of
origami experience (and the technical limitations that come with
constructing a DIY photo studio a cubicle). Thankfully there are YouTube
tutorials for nearly everything!"

Clearly, it's time for Sally to spread her origami wings and come to the
OrigamiUSA convention next month! The diplomat author, now based in
Princeton, has an open invitation to the Princeton Public Library Origami
Group, of course.
