RE: Sirius-Xm Satellite Radio
Hi Dave and list, I've had about the same results with the Sirius XM online listening page. If you have an iOS device or a droid the only option that is anywhere close to being accessible is the Sirius XM app, and even that has to be tweked somewhat, e.g., custom labeling the tabs which Voiceover idenfifies as "button." . RE: Is XM radio blind accessible with windows XP
Good evening all, Having experienced both the SXM online listening page and the iPhone app I would definintly conclude the app is considerably more accessible than the audio streaming website. However, one has to do a bit of tweaking to make the app navigable. For one thing, the main menu buttons at the bottom are unlabeled as far as Voiceover is concerned, so one does have to create custom labels which you do with a 2-finger double tap and hold gesture. Actifating the categories button enables you to browse the channels, which is much more than can be said of the SXM listening webpage. Were it not for the iPhone app I would not have added internet radio to my subscription. RE: Goldwave/JAWS Questions
Hi Jim and Listers, When I first started learning to use GW I had trouble with GW crashing JAWS and often the only way to recover speech was to reboot, which was frustrating because it often required me to start all over again with a project. In any event I discovered that JAWS and GW interface much more cooperatively after I reset all the controls in the visual tab of the user preferences to "blank." This in effect disables all the visuals which had been causing video intercept conflicts in JAWS. I have not had a bit of trouble with losing speech during the operation of GW since then, and this has held true throughout several updates of both applications. HTH and best regards, Rob "Jayhawk" Tabor -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Jim Hunt Sent: Wednesday, September 18, 2013 5:12 PM To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Subject: Goldwave/JAWS Questions Hello All, I recently heard that Microsoft will discontinue support for Windows XP in March of next year, 2014. With that in mind, I had asked a friend here in my area to install Windows 7 32-bit on my Netbook. So he did, and for a while, all had been going beautifully. I have Jaws 14 32-bit on the netbook, using Eloquence speech. For audio editing, I used Goldwave. Here is where I have run into a problem: I can use Goldwave fine for a while with JAWS and my Logitech ClearChat USB headphones plugged into a USB port, but after a while, JAWS stops speaking. Sometimes I can get JAWS to start speaking again by disconnecting the USB headphones, and eventually JAWS stops speaking altogether. At that point, I cannot even get my portable NVDA on my flash drive to start. When that happens, I ask a sighted person to read the screen to tell me what is displayed on it. With that information, I then save what I had been working on in Goldwave, close Goldwave, power-down the Netbook, and power it back up again and wait for JAWS to start speaking. I have noticed two interesting things: JAWS and Goldwave do not behave this way on the bigger, faster Dell laptop that I have, neither do they behave strangely when using NVDA on either machine. The problem I mentioned above only happens when I use JAWS, Goldwave and the USB headphones on the Netbook. So, could this be a problem in JAWS, a USB port issue on the Netbook, or is there something I am or am not doing? If anyone has any suggestions on what I can do to solve the problem or get around it, please do feel free to let me know on or off list. RE: Program for general recording on the PC needed.
Good morning Dave and list members, An external synth is certainly a workable solution to your recording dilemma. However, if you go that route I would advise you to use your sound card to run JAWS and use the external synth for other audio for the simple reason that if you lose speech it will be much easier to rule out hardware failure as a cause. For example, if you hear Windows system warning sounds you will be able to rule out hardware failure if you have JAWS configured to run on the system's internal soundcard. Conversely, it will be much harder to rule out hardware failure if JAWS is configured to run on the plugin speech box. It's just a thought to ponder and I hope it helps. RE: Program for general recording on the PC needed.
Good afternoon, I have not tried using VAC, but I have every assurance of its accessibility with JAWS and NVDA, but I can't say for sure as to whether or how well VAC works with We. Several instructors and students of the Cisco Academy for the Visually Impaired (CAVI), are using VAC with overwhelming success. The main thing to be aware of is the learning curve that lies before you, and it will take a lot of trial and error to configure all the inputs, throughputs, and outputs to get the program to connect various components correctly, be they hardware or software. Good luck with VAC if that is how you decide to go. RE: removing vocal from music
Good morning andré and listers, The answer to your question is yes because much of that earlier rock and roll, adult pop, and even country music has been digitally remastered several years ago, and when originally recorded it was done on separate tape machines or with multi-track overdubbing technology. By the way, there are karaoke services online that have already removed the vocal solo tracks and have them available for purchase on a subscription basis. I haven't researched this myself, but let Google be your friend and help you find one if you would like to consider going that route. Have a good day and happy karaoke singing to you. Hey, Loren. Glad to see you posting on the PC Audio List. I think you'll find a lot of good info hear if you want to go ahead and subscribe. As to tutorials for Goldwave, the Blind Geek Zone by Rick Harmon has a very thorough series of audio tutorials which can be found at http://www.blind-geek-zone.net/bgz-audio-archives/#Goldwave. You can also find some very useful JAWS scripts for GW, which Harmon also demos in his podcast series. RE: an annoyance with Winamp and time markers
Good morning colleagues and especially Howard, I am inclined to agree that Winamp likely does not store time markkers within the audio file being played, but does so in a separate metadata or config file, similar to the way the VictorReader Stream does with its bookmarks which it stores in a .bkm file. Now that you have me curious, I am hot on the trail of investigating that question and will get back to you. Should someone beat me to the punch bowl I thank him or her in advance. RE: an annoyance with Winamp
Good morning Larry and Listers. You may or may not know that Winap enables you to time jump the playback cursor to a specific time point. If you type CTRL+J you will be prompted to enter a time. For example, if you want to jump the cursor to 22 minutes and 35 seconds you would type 22:35 and press Enter. IF you want to jump to the 2 hour 28 minute mark you would type 148:00. This is because Winamp appears to operate in minutes recognition mode as opposed to the hh/mm/ss format. Alternatively, Winamp also enables time markers to be defined and to move from one specified time marker to another, very analogous to setting bookmarks in a digital book audio file. To set a time kmarker you would type m, and to go to a preset time marker type alt+shift+M. I hope this helps. RE: fission
Hi Tim. I don't' know of any specific podcasts or audio presentations on fision, but mayh I suggest a Google search using the key words fision and podcast with the filetype operator. The syntax of a Google search might go "podcast ~fision filetype:mp3." I suggest use of the filetype search operator as most podcasts are made available in MP3 audio format. You might also use the synonyms operator in case there are other words being used synonymously and interchangeably with fusion. Entering a tilde (~) before the word that has or may have at least one commonly used synonym can be useful in broadening your Google search in a precision way that gets you more relevant information without adding irrelevant clutter to plow through. Make sure there is no space before the word whose synonym(s) you want to have searched as in the example I give above. Hi Evan and list. You are correct in noting Ninite includes only freeware and shareware versions of programs or it would not be able to do an unintended installation. RE: JAWS Scripts for Winamp?
Good morning, Another way to get rid of the Winamp toolbar is to uninstall Winamp then reinstall it via Ninite, an web-based unintended installer and program updater. A major advantage of using of Ninite is that it automatically says no to toolbars and other unwanted components during its installation process. Saving MP3 Files in Freemake
Good evening all, I have just downloaded and installed Freemake and appear to have downloaded a Youtube video of some Hawaiian music. Hi, Colin. Thanks for that excellent suggestion on saving GW settings before updating the program. You could, I believe, have saved yourself all the problems, by before installing the new version, saving your settings, then when the new version had been installed, importing the old settings file. This usually works for me. Far as I remember, this is achieved by the setup menu item, not usually seen in the normal GW program, least not on my system, think you need go into Gw from the start menu, programs method, it is on the GW submenu under setup. There is a command in the keyboard file but on mine, nothing has been assigned and if I set up a key, unsure exactly where it would place me. Greetings, Profanity aside, which has been dealt with by the moderator, I echo the frustration expressed here with regard not only to the lack of screen reader friendly interface with the Sirius XM online listening players, but the lack of concern on the part of its staff and management. For ease of access by its long-standing loyal customer base. I would invite anyone who is a member of NFB to participate in drafting a proposed resolution to the 2013 national convention in Orlando, Florida calling Sirius XM to task and challenging the company to re-engineer its web-based audio interface to WCAG standards. RE: Goldwave settings question
Hello Don and list. I use Goldwave version 5.67 on a Windows 7 64 bit machine and had no trouble with reverse continuous audio playback of an MP3 file from end to beginning. I ran this test immediately before I responded to your querry to ensure I was giving you accurate information. You should be able to resolve your issues with reverse playback interruption by typing CTRL+A to assure your total file is included within your edit start and finish markers. Premature reverse playback stoppage is usually due to not having the entirety of the file highlighted. Here's hoping this helps. In older versions of Gold Wave, if a file was open, the user could hit F5 and the file would begin to play in reverse completely from the end to the beginning. I found this especially useful in situations where the initial file length exceeds the actual length of the recorded material. In 5.67, however, when one presses the F5 rewind key, the file rewinds only for a few seconds and then stops. Please tell me what if anything I can do to change this behavior so that the file will play in reverse until I choose to stop it. RE: Goldwave Keyboard Reconfiguration
Good evening Collin, Thanks for suggesting modification of the GW keyboard configuration. I'm fine with F9 as the default record key but I was hoping to make the pause record and stop record functions a bit easier by turning them into a single keystroke instead of a cgrl+ function key. Obviously the GW developers make abundant use of the function keys which is a major contributing factor in giving GW such a generally mouse-free user friendly interface. The other side of the coin is there aren't many function keys left. Now if GW could just capture a stream off the web. RE: WavePad not accessible
Good morning all, I second that motion as I am a pretty devoted Goldwaver too. It is an ipressively versatile and powerful sound editor with a generally intuitive user interface and its screenreader accessibility has been consistently good in this moving target of more powerful and graphics-based OS's, and the JAWS scripts by Jim Grinsby have kept Goldwave even more screenreader friendly. All of that being said, I recently installed Wavepad for the simplicity of certain functions like recording, which has a single keystrike in contrast to the combined keystrike needed to start and stop recording a single audio track in Goldwave. The problem I am currently having with Wave Pad is the inability to locate the small test audio files I created via Windows Explorer. I was able after a fashion to change the output directory to the music folder, but I would like to find the earlier test files and delete them. When I launch the program and use CTRL+L to get a list of WAAV or mP3 files created in Wavepad, I am unable to delete them. Finally, I also note that Wavepad does not appear to have fast review and fast forward functions, so any audio content as well as special effects and changes of some technical settings will have to be done with a more robust audio editor such as Total Recorder or Goldwave. Lastly, I also notice that pre-existing audio files in the music library play at a slower speed and some artifact is also noticeable. I welcome any guidance from anyone more knowledgeable than I to set me straight if I am doing anything incorrectly. Thanks in advance. Looking For New Youtube to MP3 Converter
Greetings, Until very recently I was using youtube-mp3.org with very good success until the owners of the web page stoppd the Youtube to MP3 video conversion process under a threat of a lawsuit from Google. I have tried other online converters, but they seem to crash IE9. The Youtube video to audio converters I have tried without success include listentoyoutube.com, and videotomp3.com. I am wondering if anyone has discovered a Youtube to audio converter that is equal or near equal to Youtube-mp3.org. I discovered while researching what was behind this sudden and strange development I was curious as to why Google is playing waterboy for ASCAP. However, I have subsequently concluded that Google has its own turf to protect, and it is the ring tone revenues they are likely receiving from the Android apps markets. IN any event, I would appreciate any suggestions. TIA Rob "Jayhawk" Tabor To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org

Hi, Casey and list. I'm sure I don't have the newest model of Asus on the retail market as I bought it second hand from a PC technician. I figured that following the path of the techies as to what equipment they buy for their own uses is not a bad way to go. Mhy key system specifications are as follows: System Manufacturer ASUSTeK Computer Inc. System ModelU52F System Type x64-based PC Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 350 @ 2.27GHz, 2266 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s) As for battery life, I generally plug into the AC whenever I can as the sound card and Eloquence text to speech drivers tend to pull a lot of battery power, so I'm not the best person to answer that question. Re: Question re Zoom Series Digital Recorders
Hi, Julie. Thanks for the tip and the link to the podcast on BTC, which is a very diverse and informative web site to which I hope to become a contributor in the not very distant future which is one thing I have in mind in wanting to invest in a high quality but economically priced recorder and there appears to be a very strong consensus that H1 meets those criteria. I am surprised if there is no pause function, in which case the 2 options are either to stop the recording altogether and create multiple audio files to record the same session or event, or, in the alternative, let the recording run and remove unwanted audio clips with Goldwave after migrating the audio files to the PC. BTW, I have heard the Zoom H1 records in WAV format. Is this true? It seems WAV is easier to manipulate and reprocess because it is a lossless format. This would be advantageous as I can always convert the files to MP3 with GW. Thanks to Julie and all for your very informative guidance. Re: Question re Zoom Series Digital Recorders
Hello, Dane. Thanks for your prompt and thorough response to my inquiry. The H1's ability to function without menus, the efficiency of its battery lifeand usage, and minimal threshold noise in recording do make a strong case for the H1 as being heads above other models in the series. I have just one remaining question. Whom do you commend as the best vendor to purchase the recorder from? TIA Rob Tabor and Guide Cane Raúl Junior - Original Message - From: "Dane Trethowan" To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Saturday, March 19, 2011 12:52 AM Subject: Re: Question re Zoom Series Digital Recorders Only my opinion but the H1 is preferred by me over the Zoom H2 and H4 for convenience! For example, I press one button and the H1 starts recording. The H1 has longer battery life than the H2 and only takes 1 battery instead of 2 as the H2 does thus it costs less to run on battery. Now here's an interesting point to think about, I bought a H1 as a gift for someone a few weeks ago and I noticed that the H2 was cheaper? As this person was sighted I did consider getting the H2 though I'm told by people in the know that the H1 has some advantages over the H2 which include less noise when recording plus a lack of a menu system. The H1 does exactly what it says it does, records and records damn well, if you can operate a cassette recorder then you can easily operate a H1. Re: Wind noise question
Hi, Dave and list. What you would need to do in Goldwave is to perform its noise reducing feature which is accomplished in the following steps. 1. Use your start and finish markers to capture a half second of wind noise with no other sound and paste to clipboard with standard windows commands. 2. Goto Effects from the main menu which you can access with alt+C. 3. Type F for filter. 4. Down arrow or type R to select Noise Reduction and hit Enter. 5. in the noise reduction dialogue box check the "clipboard noise print." 6. Click OK. Hope this helps. Now this tip isn't going to be for everyone as not everyone wears hearing instruments which can be used with induction loops but if you do? Well here's a handy way to use your instruments to great effect when sorting out one of the very few functions of the Zoom H1 which isn't accessible. I'm talking about the Bit and Sample rate of the file you're recording, this is changed in "Standby" mode by using the fast forward and rewind buttons, rewind takes you back through the cycle whilst fast forward takes you forward through the cycle of bit and sample rates. When recording using Wave Broadcast format you cycle through 44.1KHZ 16 Bit, 48KHZ 24 bit and so on right the way up to 96KHZ 24 and back to 44.1KHZ 16 bit so how to tell where you are. Well turn your instruments to pick up induction loops and put the recorder near them. Now start recording, you'll be able to hear the recorder as it writes to the SD card and the slower the rate of writing then the small the sample size, 44.1KHZ 16 bit has the Zoom H1 writing to the SD card about every half second whilst 96KHZ 24 bit has the H1 writing to the SD card every sixth of a second or so. Just thought others may find this helpful as I do, still haven't worked out a way to set the date and time for date/time stamping of recordings but I have to admit to not trying too hard, after all! one can change all that when the files are copied from the H1 to your computer. To be frank I was amazed at the quality of the result I got for a first try and I'm prepared to stand by the claim I'm about to make and that is the Noise reduction functions of Goldwave rival those which are part of more expensive products such as Sound Forge. Furthermore, the sections in the manual describing how the noise reduction system in Goldwave works are incredibly well written without boring anyone to sleep so all one has to do if they want to try the noise reduction function is to read for a minute or so and the have the basic knowledge required to get started. So what's Goldwave worth these days, $59.00 or thereabouts? Damn good value for money and I'd almost be tempted to say its a "Giveaway"! when one also considers its many built-in powerful functions and the fact that the author has gone out of his way to make this product accessible. Very interesting! This new scrubbing function using the J K and L keys must be a newly added feature to GW version 5.57. I don't remember this in previous versions. Having said all that however, Sound Forge does offer some nice audio editing feedback, scrub mode isn't nearly as good as that found in Goldwave but all the cursor movement commands can be used whilst the file is playing and this can't be done it seems in Goldwave but no matter, if one got into a discussion or argument about this then one would be incredibly trivial. Re: audio queueing was Re: Noise Reduction in Goldwave, I'm probably stating the very obvious
Hi, Richard and list. We are talking about somewhat different functions here. GW and other audio packages let you set rewind and fast forward speeds, but what I refer to is the ability to hear audible feedback as you set markers. However, the drawback here is pretty minor as it is easy to confirm a selected audio clip which is done by typing F3 if you don't change the factory default key for playback 2. I refer to this as sound cuing and another gentleman called it scrubbing. In essence, this means yyou are able to hear the audio as you adjust start and/or finish markers to reprocess an audio clip. Hope this helps. best regards Rob Tabor - Original Message - From: "richard claypool" To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Thursday, August 12, 2010 9:20 PM Subject: Re: audio queueing was Re: Noise Reduction in Goldwave,I'm probably stating the very obvious Hi, well, in gw, one can listen to the selection and set how fast or how slow the rewind and fastforward plays, so one could half or quarter the speed on one and speed up the other if one wished. so, as i understand what you're saying, gw does have this ability. msn bellevue@gmail.com skype lord_of_beer last fm http://last.fm/lord_of_beer ----- Original Message - From: " Rob Tabor" To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Thursday, August 12, 2010 10:08 PM Subject: Re: audio queueing was Re: Noise Reduction in Goldwave,I'm probably stating the very obvious Good evening, Rick and list. Re: Reading current volume status in goldwave
Good morning Mario and listmembers. Mario, I truly undersstand your need for DB status info as a training tool -- I suspect for a sighted person who is accustomed to relying on sight in lieu of sound. Now it is possible that finding a DB status display could be accomplished with a few lines of code added to Mr. Grimsby's JFW scripts or the scripts of W.E. and the other screen readers. Many GW users will no doubt derive benefit not IF but WHEN this deficiency of access is solved. It will be helpful to have the numeric readings to confirm that autogain and other optimized gain options are working as they should. Have a great day on this 20th celebration of the signing of the Americans With Disabilities Act. In the autogain dialog box you will find a list of 7 preset options which include adjust to 50 percent, default, ffast gain update, maximize voice with high noise, medium gain update, peak reducer, and slow gain update. Select a preset option with the up and down arrow keys and tab 3 times to preview and listen before making your permanent choice. 6. When satisfied with your autogain preset choice, tab once and hit space on the stop preview button and tab to OK and press the space bar. It may take a few minutes to reprocess the gain level depending on your PC's overall performance and the size of the audio file. Generally, I find the default option works well at least 90 percent of the time. Re: Question About Trial Version Of Gold Wave
Good evening, Howard and listmembers. I agree with Howard that Goldwave is an excellent buy for its features and functionality in the package. There are much more expensive audio reprocessing packages, e.g., Studio Recorder by the American Printing House for The Blind http://www.aph.org/ , which allows you to hear audio as you are highlighting a sound clip to manipulate or modify. A second advantage of Studio Recorder is that it was developed for use by blind users, therefore, no script is required to make it fully accessible right out of the box. As to the audio queuing issue, it is not difficult to customize one of Goldwave's three playback functions to confirm your selection. However, making very minor adjustments to the audio range can be somewhat tricky. Goldwave has performed well on the accessibility front with the aid of very solid third party scripts by Jim Grimsby. since Version 5.57 is the most significant upgrade in quite some time, I suspect new scripts will need to be developed to access the new features of GW5.57. Hopefully, Mr. Grimsby or another developer is working on updating the scripts. Re: Problems With Switch
Hi Tom and list. I agree with Jörgen that the best way to uninstall an app is via the "add/remove programs" option in Windows CTRL panel. While even this software de-installation process may leave traces of program code in the Windows registry, the process is usually smoother and less problematic than using the program's uninstall component. Not to be cynical, but think of it this way. The software developer is not necessarily going to make it easy for a dissatisfied customer to get rid of his/her/its prized software app. Best regards Rob Tabor - Original Message - From: "Jörgen Hansson" To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Wednesday, July 14, 2010 5:32 AM Subject: Re: Problems With Switch Hello tom! well, I have been in to this before my self, so once I was tired of that kind of trial expention. but one friend of mine told me that once you have installed the Switch converter, you can also go in to the controll panel, go to add and remove programs, go to the Switch program aplication, then uninstall. when you're in that uninstall option, you have 2 choices, the first one is uninstall, and the second one is downgrade to the free version, this means that youdon't have to be worry about the trialversion anymore, and you can use it as long as you like. hope this helps. Hi, John and listmembers. Thanks John for the info on Dropbox and Sendspace. This is very helpful. Sounds like another task to add to my to do list while i'm on vacation. The only question is whether I'll get it done the week before or after NFB national conference in Dallas. One more question. A friend of mind, invited me to join her in her Dropbox account, that's how I got it! Now to answer your question about how long you can leave files on any server, with Send Space, you can specify a time limit, so I understand. With Dropbox, you can leave the file or files up until you get ready to delete them. When you download and install the software, it will put a folder in My Documents on your computer that's entitled, My Dropbox. You can upload the files from there. But you don't really need to do anything, because the software will take care of that for you. All you have to do is, email the link to the file to someone if you wish to send it to anyone. Storage space, I don't know about Send Space. But with Dropbox, you can do this 2 ways. #1. you can invite a friend to join you on your account to increase your storage space. Or #2. you can rent more storage space for a price. Other wise, you will start out with about 1 GB of storage space. Hope this helps. My best regards. Re: Minidisc File Formats
Hi, Danny and List. Danny, I'm curious as to what you think precludes you from installing a demo version of Goldwave on the laptop being lent you. It would seem immanently reasonable to ask the PC's owner for the green light to install the demo version, especially if you inform that person of your intent to remove the program via the Windows add/remove programs utility in control panel. Thanks for advising me again. No, I haven't thought of CDEX, as I've never used it and assumed that it was simply an alternative to Goldwave but with less features. One of the main issues with putting Goldwave on this computer is the lack of available space for programmes, but if CDEX is so basic I presume it takes up very little room. My stand alone CD recorder doesn't allow editing, so the lack of such a feature isn't really an issue. Can you please advise on where to find it and any tutorials, and whether it needs any additional Jaws scripts? Gary, thanks for your suggestions, but as I said I think such machines require the same discs as my stand alone recorder, so it wouldn't make any difference to me. I guess what I'm trying to find out is whether there's any machine (apart from computers, obviously) which record straight onto hard drives or SD cards, allowing you to conveniently shift files straight to a laptop without the need to record in real time or edit anything. Many thanks, Danny On 5/25/10, Kevin Minor wrote: Hi Danny. Here's how the copy protection scheme works in the MD world. If your original recording is analog, that is, you used the RCA or Walkman plug to record analog audio to the MD, you can make one level of digital copy from that MD. You won't be able to make a digital copy of these second level discs. You can, however, make as many analog copies of MDs as you like, copying from the original source in analog, copying that second copy to a third copy in analog, and so forth. As for software that will play the contents of an MD, I'm not sure of that. As I said, I hook my MD recorder to the PC using analog means, and record the result into Sound Forge. I then split the file into individual files and convert them to .mp3. It's a bit tedious, but it is doable. Hope this helps. Have a good day, and don't work too hard. GO REDS! Hi, Chris. I would enjoy having a copy of your podcast, please. I am looking forward to checking it out and will do so as soon as I get the dropbox link. If anyone wants a copy, which is in MP3 format, please let me know. I plan to upload it to Dropbox so that I can give you the link via the groups, rather than attaching it on or off the groups, as the MP3 is quite large (over 16MB in size). Re: Digital recording software
Hi, Johnny, Chris, and listers. I would also encourage purchasing at least a one year license for Goldwave, although I purchased the fully licensed copy for only $49. By the time I took that decision I was well on my way to learning most of its basic operations after working with the trial version. The only problem was that JAWS would crash after about 20 minutes of normal operation. Thanks to Rick Harmon, host and producer of the Blind Geek Zone podcasts, the JAWS Goldwave conflict is now resolved by setting all possible video attributes to blank. This is done by pressing F11 which activates the user preferences dialogues. Then press ctrl+tab to go to Video Attributes to modify settings. BTW, I downloaded Goldwave Version 5.56 last night. So far so good. As for Multiquence, I have not tried it to know since I have not yet had occasion to work with digital video. I am curious to find out what others have experienced as to its screen reader compatibility. Johnny, if playing background music on a turntable or recorder is distracting to your wife while she is reading aloud, there is an alternative way to mix the music. If you have digital music on your hard drive or a memory stick you can mix it under the vocal track. The first step to mixing is to select an audio clip and paste it into Windows clipboard. Let me know if you want specifics on how to mix pre-recorded digital music. Chris, will your podcasts be on Blind Cool Tech? Please let us know when you have produced your first one as I will be eager to give it a listen. Re: Sirius Satellite Radio with Boombox users
Hi, Petro. I also have an Audiovox Sirius boom box and tuner which is the same one I've had since 2003 I think. Since new channels load and disappear as determined by the company I can think of no reason to account for your inability to pick up streams offered in the Best Of XM channel lineup. However, I suggest undertaking a two step troubleshooting process. First, leave your receiver running for at least 2 minutes the next time you power on. When channels change in any respect, the new configuration must be downloaded by your receiver the first time you power on after Sirius XM has made changes on their main broadcast server. If this fails to enable you to pick up the new channels I advise you to contact Sirius Customer Service to inform the company about the problem you are having. If you have an outside antenna which has been in service for a few years you may be advised to purchase a replacement antenna. HTH Rob Tabor - Original Message - From: "Petro T. Good evening Marsha and list. If you have had the opportunity to examine the layout of the Live365 web site you will notice the player is launched when you choose a specific broadcast stream by pressing the Enter key on the "click to listen" hyperlink. As for shortcuts, I have not discovered any hotkeys, either documented or undocumented. However, I am pretty facile with JAWS web navigation methods such as links macros and navigation by tables and search edit boxes. A fun way to discover new stations is to search for a "station that plays." You can specify artist, title, or genre including sub genre. If you have a VIP membership which costs $71.40 annually, you can build a library of station presets of which I have 20 and counting. I'm glad you're enjoying Live365. I just wish I had the means to make it portable. HTH. Re: goldwave questions
Hi, Tom. Tlad I could help you discover that you have the lame MP3 encoder after all. Unfortunately, I will have to defer to other listers who have experience using Total Recorder to tell you how many bit rate and sampling rate options it has. BTW, one of the first things you'll want to do in Goldwave is to set your record time to "unbound." This control is found in the user control preferences which is accessed with the F11 key. Then type ctrl+ttab to get to record preferences and tab through this dialog. Another trap for the unwary with Goldwave is that the video intercept manager of JAWS may conflict with the video attributes in goldwave which control how the visual wave form presents itself on screen. I learned the hard way by having JAWS crash about every 20 minutes or so during normal record and playback. To head this off, go to the video attributes tab in your control preferences menu and set any video controls you can to "blank." These changes in video settings has completely resolved the JAWS video conflict. I don't know what screen reader you use, but it's logical to surmise that if you have this kind of problem with your screen reader the cause and the solution will probably be the same. Good luck with Goldwave and have fun! There was nothing in the "programs" menu that indicated that I had it; nor did I see anything in "Add/Remove" programs, so I was somewhat mystified! I know I have recorded and played countless MP3 files..but how could this be if I didn't have the encoder? Re: goldwave questions
Hi, Dan. When you purchased your licensed copy of Goldwave you should have received an email containing your product User ID and authorization code key. These are then entered in the user control preferences dialog box. However, I won't swear to it as I am unable to locate the authorization codes entry field in my GW interface. THis is probably because this filed may have disappeared after my copy was automaticly validated. At any rate, I have found the Goldwave on board help files very helpful in enabling me to use the Goldwave record and playback interfaces very effectively and confidently. As for your second question, I will defer to others as I am also curious as to how to capture a web audio stream with it. This may take a stream wripper to capture the streaming audio into a Goldwave supported file format. Hopefully we will both get an answer soon. Good evening. Having removed that many, I don't know which one it is, but I know if the problem reoccurs I will know to look for tool bars. Unfortunately, my office laptop is a different story as I mentioned in my original posting. In looking again there was only an Ask tool bar whichI removed but it made no difference and even holding down the control key still doesn't launch the Live365 Player, so I'm stumped on that one. Re: streaming music
Good evening, Jorgen. Thanks for the explanation of Duckstream. If I understand the concept correctly, I could use Duckstream to stream and archive my program content to a Live365 or ACBRadio or The Global Voice host server if I have a station or a gig on one of those online stations. Do I have it right? BTW, I'm sorry I didn't include the umlaut marking in your first name because that character is not in the JFW extended character script. Is there a way I can add this or import umlaut symbols? Well, duckstream is not like winamp or real player. Duckstream is just a program which helps you stream the music from winamp, WMP or realplayer to a spesific server you have set up the actual program for. For example, let's say that you have started a little radio station, then you set up Duckstream to your own server with the server name, server port, password and mp3 setting etc. this program has also an archive function which lets you do a recording of your show and if the connection should brake up, the archive function is still going, and you can even set your own compression, if you want some smoothness into the stream it self. you can also stream om an shoutcast server or icecast server, depends on how you have set up the actual server. the sound which you're streaming from, should be coming through your sound card which your player program is assosiated to. hope this helps. In Windows Explorer you hit the space bar to select the item from the list box while holding down the control key. Good evening, Dan and all. There may be a conflict between JAWS and the video attributes of the wave form in Total Recorder. When I first began working with GoldWave JAWS would cause the computer to crash after about 20 minutes or so of record or playback. Re: Copywrite Protection and Related Issues
Good evening. I shall respond to the statements below. Audiobook sales are pretty much exactly like album sales. The publishers see most of the revenue from it, whereas the authors get stuck with very little. And, indeed, there are quite a few authors now who are releasing their books online first, knowing they'll be downloaded, given away, whatever, and knowing that'll transfer over into more direct interactions with readers. That, in turn, will generate more revenue that goes directly to the author. Why do you think publishers are now getting all uppity because people are being drawn more to ebooks? They don't get as much of a kickback from it--the author gets more of the money then. That's why you see, if you actually bother to read about it, publishers pulling their selections from Amazon and companies like that. If a book is good enough, people will pay for it anyway, whether they've purchased it or not. Because, and rightly so, authors do deserve to be compensated for the work. But they're more likely to pay for it in methods that go directly to the author if that's the case, and bypass the publishers entirely. This very accurate and concisely articulated argument is exactly why the current business model is a slowly dying dinosaur. Whether we are talking about the publishing houses or the music industry as we have known it, technology is giving authors, song writers, and recording artists more options than they have ever had before. Both industries are filing law suits, slandering our names, and doing every trick to pull all the stops to protect their vested interests that grew up out of and have thrived on oligopolies which have held dictatorial control over deciding whose works are published or recorded, and the take or leave price basis for charging the public. Technology is the enemy of the big houses because authors, artists, and consumers finally have a means of fighting back. That is why this antiquated business model is doomed to fail. Hi, John. My "self appointed vigilantee" statement was not directed at you, although it appears that way, which is the reason for my earlier apology with partial retraction. I too feel Tom is accusing you wrongfully of stealing intellectual property. I think as long as you don't sell the recordings or pass them indiscriminately to others, you are doing A OK. Copying someone else's CD's is illegal. If someone gives you a CD then that is not illegal. It's my understanding that sometimes special CD's can be distributed to broadcasters with the agreement that they not be redistributed. I obviously have no idea if that's what's going on in this case. Copying something you purchased or owned for your own personal use is not illegal, although there's some grey area here, it's generally assumed that no one will challenge the fair use laws. Making analog copies of material broadcast on TV or radio has always been permitted, but again, this is for your own personal use and not to be redistributed. Obviously, this has become more problematic for publishers with digital broadcasts and copies, although it still seems to be allowed for personal use. Obviously, you're clearly crossing the line by redistributing this material. -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of DJ DOCTOR P Sent: Sunday, April 18, 2010 3:52 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: It's Still Stealing Hello James and others, I was accused by Tom of stealing because I make copies of CD's that my boss orders for his radio station. As a believer in poetic justice, I think it's only a matter of time before RIAA gets its come-upance for its bullying tactics. Maybe a class action law suit is what it will take to put it out of business. best regards Rob Tabor - Original Message - From: "James Homuth" To: "'PC Audio Discussion List'" Sent: Sunday, April 18, 2010 7:32 PM Subject: RE: It's Still Stealing The RIAA is in quite a bit of hot water right now because of its legal tactics over the last few years. Namely, sue first, intimidate second, ask questions later. They sued a 60-year-old woman who didn't even know how to download music because they claimed someone from her house was downloading music illegally. She was the only one who lived there, and didn't have any kind of network or anything for anyone not living there to gain access to. But, that didn't stop them from suing her, trying to force her to settle, and successfully bilking her out of multiple thousand dollars. That's just one example. Throw "RIAA lawsuit" into google or some other search engine and you can probably find plenty of others. So no, I wouldn't be overly concerned if someone from the RIAA showed up at my door, because at best their track record has been questionable. And if just one of the things I supposedly downloaded proves to be inaccurate, they effectively have no case. Every day now I hear of another court case that gets tossed out because the RIAA basicly had no leg to stand on but was kind of hoping their victims would crack before that could be established. And yet, every day, the RIAA keeps going on and on about how it's got an extremely high success rate at restoring the billions upon billions of dollars stolen out of the pockets of musicians by the wicked evil music downloaders. Because, you know, they're just looking out for the artists after all. Nothing to do with the fact they get pretty much all the money generated by CD sales anyway. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Tom Sent: April 18, 2010 2:38 PM To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Subject: Re: It's Still Stealing The websites that allow you to download music and other copyrighted material are illegal in the United States. Many of these sites are not in the United States and there have been situations where The the United States have put blocks on these out of country websites. The RIAA is going after people all the time and arresting them and fining them for all the material they downloaded illegally. If you do a lot of illegal downloading you could well find someone from the RIAA at your door someday. If you pay for a CD or an MP3 song you can make as many copies of it you wish as long as you and only you use it for yourself. If you give a copy of that CD or MP3 song to someone else then it becomes illegal. Books from the NLS is a completely different situation. The copyright holder of the books gives the NLS permission to reproduce their books in a special format. That's why the NLS books that are on cassette are recorded in order, track one, track three, track two and track four. The idea was that when recorded in this format the books could not be played on a standard cassette recorder. The NLS cassettes are also recorded at half normal cassette speed. This is also the reason digital books from the NLS are in a special format. The NLS had to insure the copyright holders of books that they would be used only by blind people and other handicapped people who could not read a normal print book.
