here's how you do it.
The shift l marks the beginning of a file.
The shift r marks the end of a file or selection.
Ones these are marked and you hit the delete key you delete the selection.
If you want to save the selection,
look in the edit menu and save selection. also
you can go to the files menu and save selection there.

Subject: splitting files, automatic stop and screen reader sound stop

Hello, All,

Happy Thanksgiving!

A couple of weeks back someone on this list recommended that I use
Totalrecorder to split a file into separate tracks.

Looking at the manual, I see that there's automatic stop and the ability
to suppress speech from screen readers.

The manual is very confusing to me. I prefer step by step instructions as to
how to do various tasks. Information is scattered throughout and I don't
know which items I should look at in order to accomplish my requirements.

Some of the screens in the program are not labeled so I was not able to
figure out whether a box works with seconds, minutes or even megabytes.

I realize it would be a time consuming project to write out all the steps,
but perhaps someone can point the way so I can figure out how to accomplish
these things.

Audacity then I can only say that people just have time to waste.

Yeah sure! its free but all the ucking about that people seem to have to
do to get the thing working when there's stuff like Total Recorder just
sitting there waiting to be part of your software collection and again,
the software doesn't cost a Kings Ransom - even if you get the Video
Edition which I have -.

I haven't played with too many of the add-ons available though I've used
the speech add-on and its not too bad, again cheap at $32 I think it was.

The Editor in the Professional version does a pretty slick hob though
I've changed a few of the keyboard shortcuts to reflect my personal
tasts, changing shortcut keys isn't difficult either.

And finally, You're absolutely spot-on when you talk of the excellent
support from High Criteria, just go onto their web site and look at the
various tutorials and primers, not only on products from High Criteria
but on associated topics such as recording different types of audio etc.

Well I'm not so sure that this will be as straight forward as we thought it

those Apps which allow the sharing of data between iPods and computers.

As I understand it - someone will correct me if I'm wrong I'm sure

that's the case - then these sharing Apps probably won't work given the
iPhone has a different data distribution system, in effect the iPhone is
locked and I think the only way to share your iPhones data openly - say
music you've downloaded from the iTunes store or music you've aded to your
music collection through iTunes - is to jail break the iPhone.

does this allow you to pull music from the device, even without having

that work for all types of media other than music, like audio books.
Also, does installing a file manager on the phone give complete access

I'm mainly curious as one major downfall I have with storing my music

There are wyas and means to do all sorts of things though some can get
rather complex as you've said.

I'm not an iTunes user by default though I do have an iTunes library of
Favorites, that's in the Cloud and available on my iTunes match so any
IOS or device with iTuens installed can take advantage of the Match so I
may enjoy my collection at any time, so far so good.

As I'm using FLAC files more regularly I had to find a third party
solution as I detailed in my original eMail on this thread thus I got
the Skyshare Drive and started playing with other Apps to get that music
onto my iPhone or at least have access to it so I needen't bother with
iTunes.

So I think it's rather like this: If you compromise to playing music with

I for my part use the amazon cloud player which gives me enough music to

Hi!

I’ve decided to post an eMail on this subject for a variety of reasons,

the

main being that there seems to be a myth doing the rounds, the myth says
that its impossible! to play third party content such as different audio

file

formats etc on an iPhone or other IOS devices.

This is - to a major extent - true if you’re using say the iPhone’s

operating

system with its built-in features does have its limitations, you cannot -

as far
as I know - play FLAC files in Windows Media Player for example unless
you

use a third party plug-in so essentially we’re referring to the same type

of

problem but with different operating systems.

The other annoyance with IOS is that - unless you have an adapter

available

from Apple - you cannot copy your music files from say your computer over
a USB connection to a particular folder on your iPhone of your choosing

but

again, there are ways around that snag.

Okay so its best not to focus on what can’t be done and focus on what can

be

done so let’s do that with IOS.

The first App you’ll need is a Player and there are several good one’s
out
there but for the sake of simplicity let’s focus on two, oOplayer and
File

Browser, both do exactly what their names suggest.

With both you can set up remote locations such as a Dropbox account,
computer on a local or remote network, UPNP/DLNA device and so on,
when configured you can then select what files you wish to hear or view.

Now supposing you want to take your iPhone away from any network and
want your favourite music to accompany you? No problem as both the
aforementioned Apps will allow you to download your Music from a specific
point - computer, Dropbox account etc - right to a folder on your iPhone
where you can browse, play and manipulate your files to your hearts
content.

So this brings us to another possibly challenging topic, iPhones have
only

so

much storage space so what if you have thousands upon thousands of files
you wish to access at any one time or supposing your music collection is

in a

Lossless format that takes up a good deal of space?

If this is the case then its time to look at a pocket sized hard drive

with a

built-in Wi-Fi network, I mentioned my Skyshare drive towards the end of
last week and this drive has its own built-in Wi-Fi network which the

iPhone

can connect to.

Once connected the Apps I mentioned earlier - oOplayer and File Browser -
have direct access to the drive thus the content you’ve placed too the

drive.

The Skyshare drive on the surface looks like any other portable hard

drive, it

has a USB port on the back for connection to a computer with a USB 3.0

port

for the copying and

The apple products and the new hp computers do this.
You need a cable the breaks up in to an ear phone stereo jack and a mic

You'l find this at amazon in the apple accessories section.

The cable has 4 connectoion.

With most laptops having one jack, you may plug either a microphone or a

It then adjusts to your choice. If you want to use both a microphone

A reasonable analogue mixer, connected in to the line in of your

75 dollars, or fifty uk pounds will do you just fine.

Hello fellow pc-audio listers:
I'd like to download some music to put onto a thumb drive to which my
Parents can play in the car. Unlike my Dad's car, my Mom's car doesn't
have a cd player, and when we go on road trips to Canada, we often use
her car. So I was just wondering, once I have the songs I want
downloaded to the computer, do I have to do anything special to the
files in order to get them to play correctly in the car? Should I save
all the files as one long .m3u file or can I just put the files on the
drive as individual mp3s. The way the thumb drive in my Mom's car
works, is simple. All you have to do is put the thumb drive in, and the
music starts playing. Then, when you're finished listening, you simply
pull the drive out and the radio starts playing again. Cool huh? Thanks
in advance for your help.

Hi, It's because the outputs will not be the same in each
device.
If you turn both of them on and loading the output of one divice will be ok,
bacause it was made for that impedance match.

The other device might not match those phones.

Like I said one output can feed two inputs, The other way where two outputs
feeding the same load is not alwayse going to work.
That's why I sugested the earphone amp. or if you need to have two outputs
driving one earphone a small mixer is the best way.

The little sampson mixers around $50 are very nice.

I agree with Ken. Although what you need is a two in one out
mixer. A headphone amplifier most likely will have one input
and two or more outputs.

Your idea of having an adaptor with two inputs and one output
might work, but it could damage one or both pieces of equipment.

Hi, let me sugest this.
The best way is to get a head phone amplifier.
This arangment should only be used for inputs, because
loading in inputs is
way less.
Get the headphone amp, you'l be glad you did.

Hi, I can tell you about the stream.
The easiest way is to
Take the card out of the memory slot, put it in a card reader , then find
the music folder.

Then control c to copy the file or folder you want to place on your stream.
Go to the stream's music folder and do a control v to paste the the file or
folder in the vr$ music folder.

Take the card of your reader, after you close it.
Put it in your stream, and your dun.

Re: Any Olympus recorders that can rewind?

2013-09-07 Thread ken reed

You can set a bookmark with olympus recorders.

If you press the scene buttonru\\during playback or record you set a
bookmark.

This is used for deviding a file.
I don't know how you can extrace the devided portion.
As far as I know you can'tcan't insert in the midle of a file.

Nor can you append to a file.
I have a 520 and an ls7
The 520 is more immediat than the ls7 , because the 7 turns the moniter on
first and this causes you to wate before recording starding starts.

On the Olympus recorders I hav eyou set the jump back and mump forward
speed from a few seconds to minutes. You can't rewind like a cassette; each
time you press the back or forward keys the recording jumps by the increment
you've set.

I don't think you can set bookmarks with the Olyumpus recorders.

Hi.
I have been reading all the posts about the different Olympus devices.
I am an instructor, and some of my visually impaired students want a
recorder that will allow them to record my lectures, but when playing it
back, be able to rewind just like a cassette recorder to listen to some
great words of wiz dumb that I may have inadvertently said without my
notice.
I have played with some of the basic Olympus digital recorders that the
local division of blind services gives to the students, none of which can't
rewind.
Which of the Olympus recorders can rewind or jump back in a recording like a
cassette?
Do any of them allow setting of bookmarks?

Many thanks.

There is a place called www.analogx.com That has a vocal remover.
If you want to go the hardware rout, get a microverb.

I don't think there very expensive and I have one and as long as the vocal

These are songs of the 60s and late 50s with the vocals in the center.

Heard some demos from a hardware device that can do better it seems but the

I see that audacity has an option where you can do this, but the vocals seem
to still be there – very softly in the background but still there.

I’m just curious – is there a better program to do this or will there always
be some of the original vocals in the background?

Subject: Putting Cassettes on the computer

Hi All,

I purchased a little cassette player with a USB connection for putting some
casettes on my computer.

The software supplied is Audacity. It works ok except there are two
problems. The first I can deal with after a little exploring. What is
happening that that as soon as I connect the USB JAWS stops talking. Well,
I figured out that JAWS and Audacity are both fighting for my single sound
card. So, now I go to the record button and then connect the player, press
record and then press play on the player. I can then moniter the player to
hear what song is being recorded and when it turns off at the end I just get
out of Audacity and JAWS resumes talking. It's a little awkward but it
works.

The second problem is that once I have the casette transferred it is simply
one long file with no markings between songs, so you can't select just one
song at a time. Is there a way to put CD markings between songs so you can
move from one song to another? Can I do this with Audacity?

I don't want to bother to learn a new specialized music program because once
I have these tapes copied to the computer then I can put them on my Stream
or Apex or whatever so I won't need to mess with this again.

Do you have any sugestions?

Thanks much.

The only way around this is to get a trippletalk external synth.
Another way is to get the virtual cable. Don't ask me anything about

Access isn't a problem with Total Recorder. In fact, it's one of the
easiest, most fully-featured programs. It just can not record in Win 7 or 8
without getting the screen reader in the mix. Can Audacity? It seems to me,
there should be some way to do in 7 or 8 something that was so easy in XP.

Hi, I suggest you update total recorder to the latest version, then
you choose software recording and you just switch off jaws speech
buy pressing insert plus space (before recording) and the same
keystroak again to put speech back on, if you have jaws ten or older,
you would need to use insert plus v, press the end key and then
spacebar to turn speech off and then enter.

Hi there,

I'm in a situation where I'd like to record some short videos of myself for
someone else to see and give feedback. This helps for music lessons. I
know I can do this via my IPhone, but for that to happen, I'd obviously need
a sighted person here to help me do them.

What I was wondering was whether or not there's a way of doing it with my
computer, using its webcam and microphone. I do some video calling with
Skype, and for those sessions, the person on the other end lets me know if I
need to move the computer or screen a certain way so that they could get a
clear picture of me. I thought perhaps I could do something similar when it
came to recording videos. I figured once the screen and camera were
positioned, I could use some kind of program to take the video of me playing
my instrument and then I could send the video to my friend.

Skype wouldn't do it, I know, but is there one that would work well with
JAWS?

So much is done with video or pictures these days, and honestly, it's hard
for blind folks to keep up with this unless there's always sighted help
around.

Thanks for any recommendations.

The monitor function of SF should do this but it doesn't for some reason.
So, your only option is to go into the sound dialog go to the recording

select the line in, go to its properties, and to the listen tab check the
listen to this device box. Apply, and hit okay. Then hit okay again on the

Subject: audio when recording from line in?

Hi all,

am running windows 7.

I have sound coming in through my line in.

I can record using soundforge and when I listen the recording is plaid
back.

Is there a way to have the audio of my source from line in heard whenever
it

is operating instead of only after recording and stopping it?

I bought an attenuator plug from the Shack in hopes of doing just what's
described here, and results were awful! The impedances just don't match
of something.

The Plextalk/Bookport excells at this function, even having a stereo input
which the Victor does not. The mic jack on the Stream is pretty useless,
in that you dont' have to worry about motor noise on the internal mic
anyway.

Hi, I am using accessable podcatcher, but some casts it won’t play.
I’ve looked at the file type and there is no difference between the ones that

Is there a podcast player that plays anything thrown at it?.
I tried juce and couldn’t get anywhere with it.

Hi all,

I am looking for a good quality USB sound card with stereo line in,
microphone in and 2 stereo line/headphone out. I am not needing
something with lots of bells and whistles such as surround sound, just
something with high quality input and output, where the
software to control it is screen reader friendly. I realise this question
has been asked numerous times before, but I wasn't

interested at the time and didn't take note of any recommendations.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

The fast track pro is in the $250 class.
It comes with a piece of software that has it's controll pannel .
This control pannel is mostly blind friendly.

say line unplugged. In some directions I found it referred to a
mute button but I sure can't find that. Anybody have any

Assuming that you are talking about audio CDs then yes it will. In
fact, there are several choices for track gaps.

Only the VideoPro edition allows you to record either or both audio
and/or video. You can try one or the other so there is nothing to
lose. The only limitation is either a noise will be inserted into each
new recording about every sixty seconds or, if recording video, a
special logo is inserted into a frame, something like that anyway.
Otherwise it is fully functional and does not expire in any way.

I don't have either of them, but looking at them on Google, it looks
as if theymight be able to record both sound and video of my videos
on to my windows 7 computer.

What do you all think?

I would like something that would let me name each video and then,
when I have them on my computer, I would be able to browse the list
of titles and mearly click on one, to have it start playing.

I wish Windows Media center would let me do this, because I really
like the way it easly lets me record and then find the show I want to
play. However, it will only let me have one input and it expects that
to be from my cable.

Any ideas or input will be gratefully accepted!

Many thanks! Vicky.

Hi, You probably don't have los of sound.
If your mike has an audio or earphone jack, you will find that all the sound
has ben rerouted to that usb audio output.

You can hear your screen reader from that audio output.
You'll have to move hyour audio speaker input so that you can hear your

Re: Win Amp

2012-01-12 Thread ken reed

Hi colin,
Winamp is very easy to use.
Installing it is the hart part.
The relevent key strokes are this.
the alt key puts you in a menu.
Arrowing down through this will tell you what you can do.
If you want to add radio programs you first have to find the url of the
station.

You can get this from the stations web page.
If winamp is set up it will exicute and begin playing. Then alt down arrow
and you'l see a edit box . When you enter this station will be set as a
bookmark.

The last thing I'll tell you is that winamp integrates with your directory.
It will play if any mp3 file is there.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.

Hi!

My favourite subject smile, I've been down that road before.

I use Fire Field recorder though it hasn't been updated for quite some
time.

Now here's where things become a little tricky. If you're using Fire
Field
Recorder for quality recordings you'll want some external microphones
and
inputs, that's fine! as those devices exist but when all boiled down,
its
going to cost you a little money, not expensive mind but a little
money.

If I had my time over again, I would not have bothered buying the
extra
attachments for my IOS device, they're nice sure! but for nearly the
same
amount of money I could have bought a portable recorder which does far
more
than the IOS device I had was capable of doing, I'm talking of course
of the

Zoom H1 portable recorder.

No, it doesn't have talking this or talking that, no it doesn't have

Hi Joe,
Could you tell me what ripper you have, and where I can get it.

I looked at the exact site, and a lot of it was in deuch, so I wasn't sure
what to do.
Winamps free format converters are not mp3, they have a wma, and an aac.
You have to pay for the mp3. isn't that strange.

have only one input jack to the sound card. Maybe it's switchable between

What HP notebook computer do you have? I don't think I've seen a card
slot in a notebook computer in years. They used to have PCMCIA slots,
which I think were rebranded to PC Card slots at some point, but usually
I think you just see card readers and USB ports on notebook computers
now a days. PCI Express slots are usually available in PC towers, but
unless there's some mini version of PCI Express, I cn't imagine you'd
have access to anything like that in a notebook. I think your best
option will turn out to be a USB sound card. If you're worried about the
availability of USB ports, you can get a powered hub or even a docking
station.

If high quality and you can afford it and need it just for playback go with

It's $350 but well worth the money.

1. Open wineyes.ini. This can be found in %appdata%\gw
micro\window-eyes\users\default. %appdata% is something you can type
into the run dialogue box. It should open either the roaming folder if
you are using Vista or 7 or application data in xp.
2. Look for the line EnableUIA=1.
3. Change it so it looks like this: EnableUIA=0.
4. Save the file.

Forced? OK, the quick answer is no, there's only one set of analog I/O
for just about every Macintosh hardware I've ever laid hands
on--notebook, desktop, they're all the same. What you want is a
separate audio interface, like you suggested. Depending on what
program you'll be using for your audio editing, you have choices, or
limited choices. If you're going to use ProTools, Avid/Digidesign have
opened this program up to virtually anything, or if not virtually
anything, then a whole lot more than ever they used to allow, so check
with your retailer to find out what's supported this week. Just about
every major brand, like M-Audio or MOTU, is probably supported, and
within those two brands alone is a plethora of choices. Can you use
your Zoom H4N as an audio interface, if you have one, which I do not
know? Don't know, but it would surely be interesting to me if you
could, as that would make a very handy dandy external USB sound device
for me. Bottom line is, find out what software you'll be using and
what devices it supports natively or with installable drivers.

window
open. There are shortcut keys for opening and closing windows in it but
you
can also alt and down arrow to the nelsoft winamp sub menu and right
arrow
into it. Make sure jus the main window and playlist window are checked.
You

can open tracks in the playlist window. Control n wipes it clean. Also
remember if your in the main window by accident it will remove all the
other
tracks and just have that one. You can go between windows with control
tab.
Also r is for repeat and s is for shuffle. Control shift t gives the
time
remaining and control shift r randomizes the whole playlist. This should
be
good enough to get you started. Also make sure it is in classic skin or
jaws
won't read it right. This can be changed in preferences with control p
and
then down to skins tab and make sure it is on classic then hit enter.

can also alt and down arrow to the nelsoft winamp sub menu and right arrow

Control shift t gives the time
remaining and control shift r randomizes the whole playlist. This should
be
good enough to get you started. Also make sure it is in classic skin or
jaws

won't read it right. This can be changed in preferences with control p and
then down to skins tab and make sure it is on classic then hit enter. Any
other questions feel free to email me off list at mcare...@att.net.

Hi Adrian. It depends on what version of Windows you have

and what media

player you use. In XP. You can't control the jaws voice

separately, under

normal circumstances. But you can turn down your media

player volume.

Greetings,

Here is my problem.

I started recording to a file and saved it to an external hard drive, in
order to give it a name.

I then continued using the file appending to it. I then finished my
recording and tried to save the file which was just over an hour duration
but TR said the disk was not accessible. I checked via My Computer and it
was not visible, so pushed the connections firmly in, again, checking with
My Computer, the disk could now be seen and I could read from it.

So, tried again saving the file from TR and it still said disk was not
accessible.

In most other packages I've used, should this happen (as sometimes it
does)
a second attempt to save the file allows it to be saved. I even tried
save
as substituting c:\ for the original drive and it still complained the
disk

was not accessible.

Should such a thing happen again, how do I force TR to save the file?
Could
I enter on the to-start button, then mark the start with shift-l then
enter
on the to-end button then mark the end of the file using shift-r, then
save

selection as?

I tried copying the content to clipboard, only to be informed there was
insufficient memory to save the content to the clipboard, for I hoped, by
this method, to open a new file and paste in the content thence save to my
c:\ drive.

I am using WindowsXP Home and TR v8.2Pro.

Ideas would be most appreciated.

Hi, it works with windoweyes.
What I figured out is, that you have to use the select to get through the
search boxes.
Try the shift down arow and then tab to the edit box, and then enter, so
that the browser is off.

Then hit theclick on the go button.

One thing I have noticed is that some things don't stay on the catalog for
ever.

Hey all. My only complaint is that emusic doesn't let you roll over with
your payment. I am about to unsubscribe from them because I haven't been on
top of getting my allotted music per month. Since they don't roll over I
feel I'm just handing over my money. I guess it's really more of a problem
with me than them. They do provide a great service. And while the website is
not the easiest to navigate it's doable.
I have been checking out
www.mp3panda.com
I had a friend recommend them and so far the website is very straight
forward.

I've always been fond of emusic myself until they banned all non-US
citizens! Wish there was a way to still purchase from them somehow. This
before they banned me I had a major hard disk crash which resulted in me
losing much of my music. Much of this music was purchased from emusic
and

unfortunately I was not able to download much of what I lost. And I was
always prepared to pay for music from them because I felt their prices
were

more than reasonable.

It seems that music sites that will allow you to download music outside
the

US are rather scarce!

Hi Thom
I don't know what controll s is used for.
What I said is
Shift l marks the left boundary and shift r marks the right boundary
or the stream.
Once this region is marked there is a special file save that you get
to using the alt key.
arow down in through the files menue and you will se special file
save and after you have named the file keep tabing until you se
different options for mp3 atc atc.

It looks like you want to delete part of the file.
In that case , after the section is marked just tap the delete key and
that part of the file will be gone.

I think the original file will not be changed.
An 7.1 is alright. d

That may work if you really want to save a selection. However, if he
wants to save a file with a selected portion removed, then he needs
to be able to save the file after removing a selection. All he'll get
if he saves such a selection is material he doesn't want saved in
its own file, and nothing else.

Re: Total Recorder Instructions

2011-04-21 Thread KEN REED

Hi, you'll have to check the prefferennces settings.
There you'll find the driver choices for input and output.
I see three choices. I let total recorder be my primary sources for input
and output.

But total recorder will give you some clews, because some settings it will
tell you that you've done something wrong.

Where the trouble may start, is where you have u s b cards. You will have
to experiment to get around this.

Hi mat, there isn't much to understanding total recorder, that's why I
like it.

The most important thing to set up is your
Recording source and parameters, you find that in options.
It determins whether you will be recording from your sound card or your
software, like winamp or windows media players.

The controlls use the space bar to record , stop pause , and play.

Tabbing gets you to the output and input level controlls.
The alt key and arow keys gets the edit view and finally the preference
modes like the recording source and parameters.

Some day I'll do a podcast on it, but that should be enought to get you
started.

One more thing, after your finished with your recording
Besure your stoped. thehn tap the alt key and down arow to save. Then
chose how you want to save, because your given the choice to save in wav,
or save in mp3. Wel that's the basics goodluck.

Re: Turning an mp3 file into a wave file using cdex

2011-03-12 Thread KEN REED

Hi vinny, you have no choice.
Because the file is already an mp3, the audio file that the software will
create gives you a file only as good as the level of quality you had in the
mp3 spec.

If the mp3 file is 192k and 44.1 or so you'l get a perty good recording out
of it.

If it's 128 or less, the file will sound a little gritty.
You could use winamp or windows media to create your audio file disc.

Re: Blocking out screen reader when recording with total recorder?

2011-03-10 Thread KEN REED
Hi , if you are recording through software you can't block it out, because
the what you hear option is turned in your computer.
The only thing you can do is get an external synth so your screen reader
voice doesn't come through.

If your recording through the sound board this won't be a problem.
Exsept what comes through the mike. You can edit that out by steping the
time interval down to 1 second or so.
