Re: Output v DSP Plug-In for Compression
all I gotta say is, wow. I was so impressed with this thing from the start, I bought it. I love the compression--better in my oppinion than audio stocker or rocksteady, or even the thomas limiter. i think at it's defaults, it sounds perfect. The compression's definitely there, but it's very subtle. I've found that with the other compressers mentioned above, that they choak the sound somewhat. This volume logic plug-in is beautiful, and definitely worth the 20 bucks. Shane - Original Message - From: Steve Matzura [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. Like I said, zero accessibility, darn darn darn! I think Sound Solution, which is also a multiband processor and free, is more accessible. The fields are not automatically spoken, but at least you can tab between them in Sound Solution, and label them. It's also a DSP plug-in, which has its advantages. Agreed. Regarding Stream Solo, this is an intriguing plug-in but I suspect it will not be suitable for the way most Shoutcasters broadcast. This isn't a substitute for your current encoder of choice, such as Shoutcast or the SAM Encoders. Instead, it's a processor that feeds processed audio to your encoder. There are plenty of custom controls in this application to set the parameters of the processing, but at least you can tab between them so I suspect they could be recustomised and labeled. Were you able to find the one to change the audio processing preset? What happens with this application is that once you turn the processor on, audio is taken from the input of your sound card and fed back, slightly delayed through the output of your sound card, complete with processing. This means that if you are disconcerted by the delay between when you talk and when something is echoed back, you wouldn't want to use this on the one sound card. You'd instead want one sound card dedicated to taking the output of another sound card and sending it to your encoder like Sam or Shoutcast. That said, I know Ots DJ also has this slight delay, and some Shoutcasters don't mind it. A two-card system would probably be optimal, yes. Very interesting stuff, and it would be awesome if we could convince these guys to make Volume Logic more accessible by giving good keyboard access. It's very CPU efficient for what it does, which is a really impressive thing. I note though that the last version was in January, so hope it is still under active development. Perhaps it's just stable and they don't need to keep releasing updates. That would be nice. I tried emailing them at several different addresses found in several different read-me files from the VL and Octimax_ plug-in documentations, and so far, nothing. ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This list is a service of MosenExplosion.com. What I like about it just as much as its subtle hand on the compression knob is the volume-raising effect it has on soft intros without the pump sound you hear when the loud parts come in. Also, if my subway- and datacenter-ruined ears do not deceive me, I detect a bit of sonic expansion. Listen to something with a lot of stereo reverb on the center channel. For example, Gordon Lighbtfoot's The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald is a perfect example. The voice reverb on the sides seems louder to me than without VL turned on. I'm just crazy about the thing. I just wish now we could get it through their heads at either Octiv or Plantronics to give us a slightly better interface for all the sliders and knobs and whatever else it's got that we can't get to. ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This list is a service of MosenExplosion.com. I'll say what it is if that's allowed, Mr. Lister, maybe you'll let me know if it's OK to name names. I'd love to use it for broadcasting. I use it now in the house/office for general playback purposes and it's just an amazing sound. The problem is, it's an output plug-in, not a DSP, so I'm not exactly sure how to use it in conjunction with either a DSP streamer like Shoutcast or stand-alone like Duckstream. In fact, I'm not even a hundred percent sure it *can* be used in a broadcast environment. Further, would it modify other non-Winamp audio such as what comes through the sound card's inputs (microphone or line-in)? I've been testing with it and it seems like the answer is no. This is really too bad because the audio out of this thing is just so superior to anything else I've heard to date for Winamp. ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This list is a service of MosenExplosion.com. Well, you have been really helpful with the questions I've asked on this list, so I thought I'd see how you all with your collective wisdom could help me with this one. I'm looking for something, preferrably under $500, that I can use to digitally record things other than music, such as conversations, lectures, outdoor sounds, etc. My husband and I had a mini-disk recorder that I didn't find particularly user friendly for me as a blind user. I've heard mixed reviews about the archose device, and I've also heard that the audio recorder might not be easy to find. Any ideas? Thanks! Re: External U S B sound card - help?
Hi, shashi. I feel, as I'm sure everyone on this list does, that we're all supposed to help each other when audio problems arrise. as blind people, we need the audio on our computers much more than the average person, so we all share a common bond, therefore, we have to help each other out. hi there Shashi. Here's my previous reply to your message about the external u s b sound card. Hope it's of good use for you. My e-mail address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] hi, shashi. yes, these 2 cards can co-exist on one machine. I have the same setup on my own machine, and they work wonderfully together. I use my original audigy card for jaws, and my new nx audigy 2 for the rest of my audio, and everything works great. Just make sure you install the software, hook up the unit to a usb port on your machine, and then go into sounds under settings and control pannel. Look for the audio tab, and make sure your new card is set as the default playback device, hit apply then ok, and all should be well. If you want jaws to use your other sound card and your audio to come through the new audigy 2, I can give further instructions on that a little later. This should get you going for now though. It seems that in some cases it is acting like a multichannel card because I can play an audio CD in Winamp, and hear Jaws speak, and music playing at the same time. However, when playing an MP3 file in Winamp, Jaws will NOT speak. Also, when I try to enter the chat rooms in Audio-tips, I get the message can not access your output device, another program is using it.
