You've either got a full disk, the write protect tab on the disk has
gotten moved to the right when it should be to the left, or you might
have a low battery.

Re: ALLOFMP3 EXPLORER

Hi, Andre. What I do in regard to all of mp3, is I use the actual web

when I'm ready to have them downloaded. That's the best way for us as
blind people.

like the way it adds tags to the files for user info like album titles etc.
Don't know if there is really an y other way to do this from the site.

Re: Output v DSP Plug-In for Compression

2005-11-11 Thread Shane Christenson
all I gotta say is, wow. I was so impressed with this thing from the start,
I bought it. I love the compression--better in my oppinion than audio
stocker or rocksteady, or even the thomas limiter. i think at it's defaults,
it sounds perfect. The compression's definitely there, but it's very subtle.
I've found that with the other compressers mentioned above, that they choak
the sound somewhat. This volume logic plug-in is beautiful, and definitely
worth the 20 bucks.

Like I said, zero accessibility, darn darn darn!

I think Sound Solution, which is also a
multiband processor and free, is more accessible. The fields are not
automatically spoken, but at least you can tab between them in Sound
Solution, and label them. It's also a DSP plug-in, which has its
advantages.

 Agreed.

Regarding Stream Solo, this is an intriguing plug-in but I suspect it will
not be suitable for the way most Shoutcasters broadcast. This isn't a
substitute for your current encoder of choice, such as Shoutcast or the
SAM
Encoders. Instead, it's a processor that feeds processed audio to your
encoder. There are plenty of custom controls in this application to set
the
parameters of the processing, but at least you can tab between them so I
suspect they could be recustomised and labeled.

Were you able to find the one to change the audio processing preset?

What happens with this application is that once you turn the processor on,
audio is taken from the input of your sound card and fed back, slightly
delayed through the output of your sound card, complete with processing.
This means that if you are disconcerted by the delay between when you talk
and when something is echoed back, you wouldn't want to use this on the
one
sound card. You'd instead want one sound card dedicated to taking the
output
of another sound card and sending it to your encoder like Sam or
Shoutcast.
That said, I know Ots DJ also has this slight delay, and some Shoutcasters
don't mind it.

A two-card system would probably be optimal, yes.

Very interesting stuff, and it would be awesome if we could convince these
guys to make Volume Logic more accessible by giving good keyboard access.
It's very CPU efficient for what it does, which is a really impressive
thing. I note though that the last version was in January, so hope it is
still under active development. Perhaps it's just stable and they don't
need
to keep releasing updates.

That would be nice. I tried emailing them at several different
addresses found in several different read-me files from the VL and
Octimax_ plug-in documentations, and so far, nothing.

Wow Shane, that's a rave if ever I heard one, andI couldn't agree
more. What I like about it just as much as its subtle hand on the
compression knob is the volume-raising effect it has on soft intros
without the pump sound you hear when the loud parts come in. Also, if
my subway- and datacenter-ruined ears do not deceive me, I detect a
bit of sonic expansion. Listen to something with a lot of stereo
reverb on the center channel. For example, Gordon Lighbtfoot's The
Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald is a perfect example. The voice
reverb on the sides seems louder to me than without VL turned on.

I'm just crazy about the thing. I just wish now we could get it
through their heads at either Octiv or Plantronics to give us a
slightly better interface for all the sliders and knobs and whatever
else it's got that we can't get to.

I wasn't looking for this, really I wasn't, but I found a volumizer
 (for lack of a better term)--you know, AGC + multi-band compresser +
eq--whose sound I absolutely have fallen in love with since I
installed it. I'll say what it is if that's allowed, Mr. Lister,
 maybe
you'll let me know if it's OK to name names. I'd love to use it for
broadcasting. I use it now in the house/office for general playback
purposes and it's just an amazing sound. The problem is, it's an
output plug-in, not a DSP, so I'm not exactly sure how to use it in
conjunction with either a DSP streamer like Shoutcast or stand-alone
like Duckstream. In fact, I'm not even a hundred percent sure it
*can* be used in a broadcast environment. Further, would it modify
other non-Winamp audio such as what comes through the sound card's
inputs (microphone or line-in)? I've been testing with it and it
seems like the answer is no. This is really too bad because the audio
out of this thing is just so superior to anything else I've heard to
 date for Winamp.

OK, I've not heard from the list moderator one way or the other, so
I'm gonna go out on a limb and tell you that the plug-in is called
Volume Logic. There's another one they have, called Octimax_ (note
the underscore at the end of the name--odd, yes). Both are available
from http://www.octiv.com, and that company appears to be a wholly
owned subsidiary of Plantronics, the people who make all those neat
headsets for telephones of all kinds.

Subject: using shoutcast behind a router

Has anyone had any success with this, using a router with the shoutcast
server to broadcast? Jonathan Mosen says it can be done, but that ports
8000 and 8001 must be opened, but I need some clarification on some
things. Do I open, for example port 8000 and make it the starting and
ending port, and do the same with 8001, or do I just open, and use 8000
as starting and 8001 as ending? I have a cable connection and a net
gear router, and am using dns to go on a trial basis as my domaine
server. Thanks in advance for any help.

Firstly! ensure that your on-board sound device is enabled in the computers
CMOS, and its best if you're using Windows XP as it supports multiple sound
devices, when the computer is booted both sound devices should be detected
automatically by windows.
You can then select through the Sounds option in the Control Panel which
device your system will use for playback, recording and voice. Most
applications such as Sound Forge, Winamp etc will let you select which
devices they input from or output to.

Digital audio recording devicesHi, all! Well, you have been really
helpful with the questions I've asked on this list, so I thought I'd see how
you all with your collective wisdom could help me with this one. I'm
looking for something, preferrably under $500, that I can use to digitally
record things other than music, such as conversations, lectures, outdoor
sounds, etc. My husband and I had a mini-disk recorder that I didn't find
particularly user friendly for me as a blind user. I've heard mixed reviews
about the archose device, and I've also heard that the audio recorder might
not be easy to find. Any ideas? Thanks!

hi, shashi.

yes, these 2 cards can co-exist on one machine. I have the same setup on my
own machine, and they work wonderfully together. I use my original audigy
card for jaws, and my new nx audigy 2 for the rest of my audio, and
everything works great. Just make sure you install the software, hook up
the unit to a usb port on your machine, and then go into sounds under
settings and control pannel. Look for the audio tab, and make sure your new
card is set as the default playback device, hit apply then ok, and all
should be well. If you want jaws to use your other sound card and your
audio to come through the new audigy 2, I can give further instructions on
that a little later. This should get you going for now though.

Unfortunately you do not have a multi-channel card. Single channel

   It
seems that in some cases it is acting like a multichannel card
because
 I
   can
play an audio CD in Winamp, and hear Jaws speak, and music playing

NOT
speak. Also, when I try to enter the chat rooms in Audio-tips, I
get

But, I can have speech and music playing at the same time using
 Windows
Media Player.
My soundcard is a Maestro and I am running a Dell Inspiron5000

computer with Win98 S. E. and Jaws 4.51.
Is there a setting in control pannel that I need to change that

This has been BUGing me for a long time so ANY help or
