Dumb question I'm sure but why do you want to convert from MP3 to M4A or AAC?
Mp3 should play just as well and you're certainly not gaining anything in audio
quality doing this as you're converting from 1 lossee format to another thus
losing quality in the conversion anyway.
If it helps I use
Hi,
I disagree. M4A sounds better than MP3 at the equivalent bit rate. So a
128KB M4A sounds more like a 192 MP3. MP3 is the worst kind of compression
out there.

There's no doubt that M4A/AAC does sound better than MP3 if converting from a
lossless format first.
If the subject line is a true reflection of the discussion then the conversion
will actually end up in quality loss thus the resulting M4A/AAC files produced
will sound a little worse than
Well, the answer to your question is that I cannot detect any difference in
audio quality, and m4a files take up close to half the space of an
equivalent sounding mp3 file. This is important for storage conservation on

Yup, this is true. I've converted thousands of 256- and 320-kbps mp3 files

smaller, which was my original reason for converting them.

it has been my experience that when you download something from
ITunes you can't play it on any other player on your system unless
you burn it onto a cd and then rip it back on there. The licensing
is very proprietary. As for m4a format yes, winamp does play that type.

Easy CD-DA Extractor will do it. But why would you want to do it? M4A sounds
so much better than MP3. If you are trying to burn your m4a file to a CD,
Easy CD-DA Extractor will also do that, without your having to convert the
format (and lose sound quality), first.

Dana
that's
MP3 CD player won't play M4a files.

Well, then, I'd still recommend easy CD-DA Extractor. At $29.95, it's less
expensive than Goldwave. There may be less expensive programs that will do
the conversion, and nothing else. But these two are the programs I know.
How many m4a files do you need to convert? If there are not too many
the format.

Ann,
You're right; I'd forgotten; you can't open an m4a in Goldwave.
Okay, here's another idea:
Use Winamp's disc-writer output plug-in to write the m4a file to disc, as a
wav file. Open the wav file in Goldwave, and do a save as, selecting mp3 as
the format. That should work.

RCZ,
I don't know. But, again, why would you want to convert an mp3 to MP4. As I
understand it, mp4 is only a container file extension, not its own format.
But, even if I'm wrong

If you don't have access to the original sources from which the mp3s were
made (CDs, etc.), DON'T BOTHER CONVETING THEM! As I explained below, you'll
just be converting from one (not very y good) lossy format to another (if
better) lossy format
what is m4a?

Hi,
OH,I do appreciate the offer, but I'm on dial up,and just one of these files
is over 20 MB. I have
A relatively new compressed audio format, like mp3, but with better sound
quality and a smaller file size. I gather it was first developed for the
IPod. But it isn't limited to that platform. My brother has over 5gigs of
music in the m4a format, which he ripped from CD to his Ipod, and synched
