OPEN CALL

LAK FESTIVAL OF NORDIC SOUND ART

We are looking for sculpture and/or installation work for this year’s 
festival taking place in Copenhagen September 26-29th 2013.


TERMS AND CONDITIONS

• You are an artist from any of the Nordic countries
• You work in the field of sound-related sculpture or installation art
• You want to exhibit new work or work that hasn’t been exhibited in 
Denmark before
• We can provide a fee of €350 including transportation and travel 
expenses
• We can provide AV equipment such as microphones, speakers, mixers, 
projectors etc.
• We can provide food and housing on our humble festival grounds during 
the festival


EXHIBITION SETTINGS

The festival takes place in an old factory and you can exhibit your 
work in one of three settings:

• a large, white gallery room of 7x9.5 meters
• a large, industrial concrete room of 7x9.5 meters with a high
ceiling of 4 meters
• outside on the factory grounds

PROPOSAL

Send your proposal (or any questions) to c...@lakfestival.dk before 
August 1st and please provide links to audio, video, or photos of the 
work in question or previous work.

We don’t want to just talk about the future: we want to invent our own 
Golden Age. The MusicMakers Hacklab at CTM.13 will be an open, 
collaborative environment in which participants can learn about new 
technologies and get their hands on making their own musical inventions. 
It’s a space in which people can build a rapid prototype of anything 
they imagine, creating new ideas around music making and creation, from 
composition to performance and DJing.


We’re inviting people across media to encourage collaboration: 
musicians, developers, artists, designers, people working in skills like 
sound and music, but also code, fashion, visuals, and industrial design 
and craft.


Throughout the week, we’ll welcome artist and developer presentations 
from Keith Fullerton Whitman, Imogen Heap, Lucas Abela, Tim Exile, Ali 
Demirel, Native Instruments, Ableton, and others to be announced. 
Participants will share hands-on skill sessions on topics like physical 
computing and custom controllers, wearable technology and fashion, live 
visuals, Pure Data/libpd, Max for Live, Reaktor, OpenSoundControl, 
Quartz Composer, Processing, and more.


PARTICIPANT INFO

Selected participants who have proposed a project idea will be named 
official Hacklab Fellows and be provided with:


* A free CTM Festival Pass;
* Highlighted profile on CTM and createdigitalmusic.com websites;
* The chance to show your finished work at the live showcase at 
Berghain Kantine on 1 Feb, as part of the CTM.13 program.


In that spirit of sharing and community, the Hacklab will be open to 
walk-ins from both hackers and the general public.

To be part of the Hacklab Fellows program, please submit:

* A 150-word description of the project you’d like to execute;
* A 100-word bio;
* If you’d like, send us any images, sketches, videos, or websites 
you’d like to help us promote your participation and see what’s inside 
your head. (optional)

proposal – some Hacklab participants might want to join in your project.

What I know is that you didn't give us much information... Are you 
trying to compile this or trying to load it? What Pd version, platform, 
etc?


The external uses the Flext library, so you need it to compile. Flext is 
no longer in Pd-Extended, if that is what you are using.

Miller's phase vocoder patch in the help files could do this using FFT 
resynthesis. Also my ParticleChamber abstraction 
(http://macumbista.net/?page_id=514) or Frank's [syncgrain~] object 
would do it with granular synthesis. Each approach has it's pluses and 
minuses. I don't know how long the Ableton folks worked on their 
stretching functions, but I think a long time. And there are still 5 
different ones to choose from depending on the source material, which 
basically correspond to different grain lengths, density and overlap.

Specifically, the *only* function missing from the non-donation OSX  
version of Ardour is support for AudioUnit plugins on the Mac. I have  
no problem with the Ardour model of distribution, and AFAIK you can  
still use your package manager in almost any Linux distro to avoid  
even being asked to help support development. Ardour is one of the  
best things coming out of the world of free software for audio  
production happening right now, and is well worth any support you can  
give.

been active since 2007 so I don't know how up to date it is anymore. One 
huge problem was that its JACK support was/is crap.

Any digital filter will blow up when it becomes saturated. Clipping to 
-1 and 1 doesn't help, because then you could be sending values of -1 
and 1 almost constantly to the object. Look at the help file for 
[limiter~] and use that ahead of your freeverb perhaps. Not having a 
high value for the feedback in the reverb itself can help.


nan stands for Not A Number, and objects give this when they are 
incapable of calculating values any more.

This should scale things enough without losing too much resolution. It 
is digital after all.

*Overview*

Regenwald 2011 is a contemporary re-interpretation of David Tudor’s 
series of compositions from the 1970′s entitled “Rainforest”. It uses 
various types of sonic transducers to play live sounds through various 
resonant objects in the performance space, as well as through 
architectural features of the space itself. Additionally, an 8×8 matrix 
mixer allows the sound from any of the objects to be sent to any of the 
performers, making the whole piece an experiment in generative chaos.


Regenwald 2011 will be developed in a workshop format with up to 8 
participants over a period of several days. The resulting work should 
shift between relatively static installation-like moments and 
performative sections where the artists seek new relationships with the 
objects and each other. The audience is free to move around the 
performance space, engage in conversations and explore the resonant 
objects, thus adding new life to the rainforest.


A opening night presentation will introduce the concept of Regenwald 
2011 and the context of “Schematic as Score” as seen in the works of 
both David Tudor and John Cage.

The Regenwald 2011 workshop is open for 8 participants who will be

and New Zealand.

Danish sound artist and cultural producer Mads Bech Paluszewski (1977) 
works with circuit bending, sound installations, tactile acoustics and 
performances from his Copenhagen base. Solo and as a member of several

several workshops in circuit bending and user driven sound installations

Hi Aaron,

I remember the font and the ALSAmixer mentioned in your other thread as 
both being common n00b problems on Linux.


The font problem comes when the default Tcl/Tk font in the Linux system 
is different from that used in the help files. I don't recall the 
solution to this, but maybe that will help you search the archives better.


With the ALSAmixer, you have to make sure that it does not pass the 
sound from the microphone directly through to the speakers. IIRC, this 
is not so intuitively labeled in the ALSAmixer. But one of the onscreen 
fader-like controls (or its MUTE command) does this, and once you set it 
and save the mixer settings it will never bother you again.

abstraction, there is a section for per-grain effects. It is 
deliberately left empty, but is there for exactly this purpose.

The Buchla analog synthesizers contained filters to separate odd and 
even harmonics. They were primarily used in the synthesis of different 
types of instrument timbres rather than filtering acoustic instruments, 
but perhaps it's worth trying on your own in Pd.

This is a classic example of the ongoing (mis)communication(s) between 
artists and scientists. In this case, I think Mathieu is confusing the 
purpose of art with the purpose of a scientific paper. One's aim is to 
establish and demonstrate facts, the other to explore possibilities and 
inspire imaginative (and often non-linear) connections.


For me, far too much of this art-science stuff errs on the side of 
technical demonstration. And far too many artists lack the training to 
engage with the real media of their work and instead hire technicians to 
realize it for them. The flip side of that coin is that poetry is often 
unquantifiable (program me something sad says the media artist to 
their trusty technician) and causes segfaults in engineer-type brains ;-)

I had two very disappointed workshoppers last week trying to get 
[playlist] for windows. AFAIK it used to work pre-PDx many years ago, 
maybe that was when a windows DLL was still available.

You probably mean [grid], another of Degoyon's objects from the 
unauthorized lib. This means it could have the same potential problems 
for inclusion in PDx as PiDiP. Another problem with this lib is the lack 
of Windows binaries in PDx, I've run into this issue at workshops 
before. Obviously I am not fascist enough to ban windows from my 
workshops! ;-)

What is there exactly in PiDiP that people need so badly? The (IMHO 
ugly) video filters from EffecTV? Or the streaming part?


In either case, the solution seems simple to me. PDP itself isn't really 
being maintained AFAIK, and isn't completely cross-platform anyways, so 
why not just implement what is needed from PiDiP in GEM?


If there is a (willfully) stubborn stone in the river, just fork and 
move around it! And one less reason to put up with a certain person's 
temper-tantrums later...

Use the offset message to send the gemwin to the second screen. You 
just have to know where the second screen is in relation to the first

Motion tracking can be done easily in GEM with a combination of 
[pix-background] to create a histrogram showing only changed pixel 
values, and [pix_blob] to track the center of gravity of those changed 
values.

Hi Ronnie,

you would need a Mid/Side recorded audio file, I'm sure the trick 
doesn't work with normal stereo. But no I don't have a patch. Normal M/S 
uses M and S instead of L and R. The S track gets panned left, and then 
an identical version gets panned right and inverted in phase, in Pd this 
would be [*~ -1]. Then use a samplewise delay on the M track, which is 
panned center (i.e. [*~ 0.5] sent to both left and right after the 
[z~]). To a point, the longer the delay in samples, the higher the Mid 
track seems elevated.


There could be plugins to convert normal stereo to M/S. I recall seeing 
such a thing in my Ardour plugins, so it probably came form one LADSPA lib.

I imagine there is a big button that says Invite all your friends and 
colleagues, and when you click it, then LinkedIn imports your address 
book and starts working. Not something a warning would fix, as it only 
happens once. I would say block any emails coming from the linkedin.com 
domain. AFAIK no one uses it as an actual email service. That would fix 
the issue.


How do emails from unsubscribed addresses end up on the list anyways?

There is no such thing... It's completely relative to the amount of
detail you want to have. If you want a million points between sample 1
and sample 2 you can have them, but if you go between 100 and 101 you
already can't have that anymore. If you want to be able to use
sixteenths of samples, you can up to sample 1048576, but after that it's
only eights, until the double of that size, etc.

[tabread4~] is made to read between the samples, but there's no standard
on how many points between the samples one might want... it depends on
what you decide to do with the data, and the maximum error you can
tolerate in that situation.

I think that it's just so that you don't load something too big, for the
typical amounts of RAM that people had back when [soundfiler] was written.

If you play at normal speed with [tabread~] (not 4), you hit that
problem anyway at index 16777216, and it's not because of any
interpolation.

However, if you do use [tabread4~] with fractional floats, you hit the
problem at much lower indices, because fractions disappear gradually
first, then odd numbers disappear, etc.

Overall, it's because for a float, the numerator has to be between
8388608 and 16777215, while the denominator (or the multiplier) is a
power of two... so each time you cross a new power of two, you lose half
of the details, as the tiniest steps double in size.

Oh, and isn't it the case that [tabread~] 0.42 has an extra inlet for
the purpose of getting more precision ? The read point is now relative
to a message-rate setting.

If you have to play a very large file in RAM, you can do it by emptying
your signal-rate counter into a message-rate counter that takes care of
the big digits while the signal-rate counter keeps on taking care of the
small digits and fractions. (do you want an example ?)

When you play back the samples in the array at the same rate that they 
were recorded, then Pd doesn't have a lot of work to do since it just 
reads back the values. However, when you play them back at a different 
rate, for example by reading a 44.1K sample at 48K, then Pd often has to 
interpolate (i.e. guess the missing values in between the samples) in 
order to create the audio. That is what the 4 in [tabread4~] means: 4 
point interpolation which uses the 4 nearest values to calculate any 
value which might fall in between two samples.

I guess, you bring in two different problems here.

First problem:
You want to know the value of a signal at an exact point in time s(t),
but you only have values stored for the nearby samples s(n) and s(n+1).
Depending on the algorithm used, you can calculate a more or less
accurate value for s(t) by taking into account the nearby points and
assume a certain path for the curve going trough all points. This
problem applies also to small tables (not only big ones). If you're
playing a sample at the native rate of Pd, s(t) is always matching s(n)
and no interpolation error is introduced, as you already stated.

The second problem is:
You can't even express the exact point in time, when the t in s(t) is a
very huge number, because t is expressed as a 32-bit floating point
number. Please someone correct me, if wrong, but above a certain value
(2^24-1=16777215, I guess) you cannot even represent every integer with
the 32-bit floating point format used by Pd. So, even when playing a
sample with Pd's own samplerate, it only works nice up to a certain
table size. When you play samples 'behind' that magic number, every
second sample is played for the time of two samples.
If you play a sample at a different speed than Pd's rate, the error
starts much earlier and increases over time. This is because the higher
the number is to index a certain sample, the less values between two
sub-sequent integers are available, so the difference between the value
you meant and the value that can be represented might increase.

Check the replies. I have definitely noticed longer soundfiles having 
lower quality when designing ParticleChamber, for example. Newer 
versions of this (unreleased so far, too many bugs...) allowed pitch 
shifting, which is where I noticed the artifacts. Longer soundfiles 
started to sound more grainy than shorter ones when played back in 
whole or in part at other-than-recorded sample rates.

Did you try graphing the output of the combined [phasor~] objects? To 
me, it seems likely that the lack of a zero-crossing in the [phasor~] 
waveform would create a large amount of DC offset, and perhaps that is 
what you are hearing. [creb/blosc~], [osc~] and pretty much any other 
audio waveform generator all have mostly equal amounts of positive and 
negative energy in their waveforms. Only [phasor~] is the weird 
exception and wasn't even designed to be used as signal source anyways. 
I'm quite sure it was mainly intended for use in driving [tabread~] objects.

it turns out both of them had vanilla Pd installed. They downloaded 
extended packages and installed them and everything went fine from there.

[PD] settings on Ubuntu

Hi all,

two of my students at a workshop today had the same problem. They 
installed Pd-ext from their package manager, but they have no 
preferences file thus no externals loaded, paths or anything. I scanned 
HC's page, the puredata.info FAQ and the list and didn't find anything 
about this. Did they forget/not know to do something or is this an error 
on the package manager's part? What should I do to fix their problem?

You could use [plugin~], in which case there is the am_pitchshft in the 
SWH plugins lib. Worked well for me as a LADSPA plugin in Arodur in the 
past, haven't tried it with [plugin~] in Pd.

said, the creation arguments in the official help file may not be the 
correct ones for you!

A huge part of the old dub sound is the saturation of the delay lines, 
usually with some filters to carve up the echo as you suggest, Felix.


But one problem in Pd is that delay lines and filters tend to blow up 
instead of saturate like the old school gear. One of my biggest problem 
patches was a recirculating delay line with a high pass filter. 
Inevitably, it would die, killing the DSP chain with NaN output. Only 
way to get rid of it was to cut and paste the offending filter and delay 
line.


I suppose someone could come up with some DSP wizardry to emulate that 
analog saturation. But I have been getting a strange kick out of all 
these how do I imitate threads...


How do I imitate the sound of a very long tube? How can I waveshape the 
sound of an overdriven speaker? Where can I download a physical model of 
the sound of water? What kind of algorithms produce the sound of a 
Slinky going down stairs (alone or in pairs)?


Is it really so difficult to use the real thing itself? (Of the above 
examples, the Slinky might be the most difficult thing to locate in 
one's studio...) *Must* everything be emulated in this imaginary, 
digital world?

Keep in mind that copying between arrays at faster than audio speed may 
give the same kind of glitches you get when you use [soundfiler] to load 
audio into an array.  For this reason I wouldn't recommend it during a 
live performance.


My recommendation would be to either use several arrays which you can 
switch between, or make one long array and switch between active zones 
in the array for different loops. STEIM's LiSa live-sampling program 
takes the second approach, by the way...

problems when moving audio files around during performance. Whether that 
is justified by a theoretical explanation or not

It's not precisely the same situation, because you don't have to wait
for the hard disk. RAM-to-RAM copying is usually a thousand times faster
than that, or better. So, you won't encounter problems at the same size
of array than for [soundfiler], and the size won't even be anything
close to similar.

Suggestion: decide the agenda for the next meeting at the meetings 
themselves, and have people volunteer to present things. Maybe too North 
American or Northern European a style? ;-)


Nobody says you should volunteer yourself, but also I think people come 
when they have an idea of the program and whether it is interesting for 
them or not. No theme at all could in fact equal no interest at all. And 
if no one volunteers, perhaps curate something...

You probably want the brightest ones (usually measured in in mcd) you 
can get! Besides that, if you know anything about the camera you are 
using that would help a lot, for example which part of the spectrum in 
nanometers it is most sensitive to. Then you can match it to the 
spectrum emitted by the LEDs.


Another characteristic is the angle of the LED, in your case you 
probably want them to be pretty wide.


Some LEDs are low current or ultrabright, which mean they are better at 
making light from current. Ultrabrights, however use a ton of current at 
their brightest. This is usually only a concern if you are running from 
a battery or very weak power supply (or in something like a voltage 
controlled synthesizer when a sudden big current draw can have audible 
consequences!).


So once you understand the characteristics of the LEDs, you can choose 
the ones for your budget. You'll still have to do a lot of testing to 
get the right amount of light for the space and your camera. It's always 
of a question of whether you have more money than time, or time than money.


Somehow I seem to have neither these days, I wonder what I'm doing 
wrong! ;-)

The FLOSS Manual gets discussed on the Discuss-FM list and on the Pd 
list. I've posted several updates on what could be done to improve the 
English manual on both lists in the last few years, which don't seem to 
get much attention...


Mostly people edit it in a hit-and-run kind of fashion when they find 
something they think needs fixing while reading it. Major pushes towards 
improvements happen during book sprints, but we have none planned. My 
own life and work has taken me pretty far from the project myself at the 
moment, so I stay on mainly as admin.


Like HC said, and I echoed, don't wait around for the English manual to 
be finished. It's not likely to happen any time soon. Start 
translating, and if you find problems or places where it is incomplete, 
then fill the gaps in Portuguese or even in English if you like. If you 
add content in Portuguese, point it out to us on these two lists and 
perhaps someone will translate it into English.

place for them!

I'm totally supportive of forking whatever translation comes up. The 
reason that the Pd FLOSS Manual will never be finished is that Pd can 
do some many things, and the docs all arise out of individual people's 
research and needs. So if the PT scene has other stuff they are 
interested in, and skew their manual in that direction, good for them!

Well, if you are trying to display all the values in number boxes at the 
same time, and the digital mixer is sending them at a very fast rate, 
then yes Pd will choke on it. The numbers themselves aren't the problem, 
it's Pd's crappy graphics interface!


The attached abstraction is from the mapping library. It's used in the 
subpatch named [pd display values without pegging the cpu] in the 
arduino-help.pd patch, so I suppose it should do just that.


It works by resampling the input number stream every so many 
milliseconds. The creation argument should be the number of milliseconds 
between each sample. First inlet is the number stream to be resampled, 
the second inlet is in case you want to change the resampling rate.

between 15min and one hour in length. All sound files are mono, 16 bit,
44.1KHz WAV_PCM format.

The problem is that, after a length of time, the readanysf~ objects
output noise rather than the soundfile. It is not the result of any
single soundfile, and many or all of the readanysf~ objects can be
affected by this simultaneously.

I have attached the abstraction in question. The object is instantiated
as [readanysf~ 1], in other words the block size and and buffer size are
defaults.

Sample terminal output is as follows while the patch is running:

(which probably just rewrites the headers when converting wav to wav).

Replace the existing [plugin~] help patch with one posted by Frank
Barknecht some years ago. For the five thousandth time in several
years, can someone with CVS write access *please* just change this
friggin' thing!!!

as noted in the patch tracker: your patch crashes my Pd just as well as
the original one.

anyhow, i have committed some changes to plugin~ that will hopefully fix
most issues. (read: it doesn't crash here AND it doesn't make text-vanish)

please test (personally, i don't use LV2, ladspa, vst,...)
if it is good enough, it should probably go into the PdX-0.42 release
before it's too late.

the larger problem is that plugin~ crashes whenever a non-existent 
plugin is requested. that is an issue i have no idea how to fix. maybe 
the help patch in question should not request any plugins then, but 
simply include syntax for how it works.

whosever patch it was, it crashed here.
so could you try to confirm whether the new code works as expected?

if it does work, then no help-patch should crash anymore.

e.g. the load a plugin from a dll (e.g. [plugin~ stereo_amp amp.so])
doesn't work for me, but it seems like it doesn't work with the original
version either.

about 2 hours ago, i committed a changeset to the plugin~.c source code,
that should fix all these problems.
(read: there is a bugfix, which fixes the bug rather than trying to
avoid triggering it)

i ask you (and everybody else, who is interested in a working
[plugin~]), to get the source-code, compile the external and test
whether it works.
i'm pressing this a bit, in order to get the bugfix into PdX.

This is the exact goal of the FLOSS Manual. The site allows a PDF to be 
generated from the current status of the manual. I've been encouraging 
people not to reply solely on the images and patches, but to describe 
things in text as well in order to ensure its searchability.


One caveat, however, is that FLOSS documentation tends to follow the 
FLOSS software model of multi-authorship. Therefore, things get filled 
in as people have the drive to do so. The professional, single-author 
model seems just as uncommon in the docs as it does in the software 
itself, so be careful what kind of standards you apply. Or you could go 
out and pay for something professional... ;-)

[plugin~] can be tricky or just a plain pain the wazoo to use simply because it 
can crash when given the wrong creation arguments, such as the  name of a 
plugin that doesn't exist on your computer. Of course, a help patch which 
crashed on anybody's computer should be a high priority to fix, but maybe not 
everybody around here seems to agree with that ;-) I posted about this problem 
in 2005 and still it hasn't really been dealt with.

[plugin~] requires the path to your LADSPA directory to be set as the LADSPA_PATH in the environment. Look up 
setting environmental variables plus either bash or shell on Google to 
see how this is done if you don't know how.

If you use the terminal command listplugins, you should see a list of the LADSPA 
plugins on your system. You must use the exact name listed there, for example, if 
listplugins gives you:

/usr/local/lib/ladspa/noise.so:
White Noise Source (1050/noise_white)

then you would use [plugin~ noise_white]. (Somebody correct me if this is 
wrong, I am not on a Linux system where I can check this for the next several 
days...)

Then, you need to send the proper control parameter number, and NOT the control parameter 
name. For example, if sending the message info to the plugin lists the 
following to your Pd window via [print]:

Loaded from library /usr/lib/ladspa/mvclpf24.so.
Control input(s):
 #1 Input gain (dB)
 #2 Frequency
 #3 Exp FM gain
 #4 Resonance
 #5 Resonance gain
 #6 Filter poles
 #7 Output gain (dB)
Control output(s):
Audio input(s):
 #1 Input
 #2 Frequency
 #3 Exp FM
 #4 Resonance
Audio output(s):
 #1 Output

Then you would have to make a message 1 $1 to send a variable to control the 
input gain from a number box or slider.

would jump for joy. I just haven't had the time to do it myself. Feel free to

You can also search for plugin~ in the list archives and find much discussion on this. The two 
threads I started were called plugin~ ladspa and setting plugin~ control inputs in 
about 2005, when I was trying to figure this all out.

This is done in bash and not at all in Pd.

Sorry if it sounds a little hard, but maybe the simple solution is to  
learn to use the microphone better to avoid the environmental noise in  
the first place? It's not that difficult, and saves you a lot of  
digital work and/or processing artifacts later on.
